Saint Petersburg is the 2nd largest city in Russia. Founded by Tsar Peter the Great in 1703 it now boasts a population of over 5 million people. St. Petersburg is also graced by a community of 1,000 ISKCON devotees from all walks of life. Over the last 3 days myself, Bada Haridas and Chaturatma celebrated a wonderful yatra festival with all of them. After Krishna’s incarnation as a boar, Varahadeva, killed the demon Hiranyaksha, the demon’s younger brother, Hiranyakashipu, was determined to get revenge and conquer the universe. He performed severe austerities to get the attention of Brahma, and asked to be granted immortality. Brahma, the engineer of the universe, was himself a mortal being and so could not grant him immortality. But he did give Hiranyakashipu the boons that he could not be killed by any man or animal, by anything living or dead, during the day or night, inside or outside, on the land or in the sea or sky. By killing Hiranyakashipu in the form of a half-man and half-lion, with his fingernails, at dusk, in the threshold of the palace and on his lap, Nrisimhadeva simultaneously respected the boons given by Brahma and saved His dear devotee Prahlada Maharaja.

Gokula lila devi dasi: The devotees from the Wellington community in New Zealand were traveling through the country for the mid-year Marathon, and on their last day, they met this German traveler in a small town 2hours away from a big city. Indradyumna Swami: Just outside Baku, Azerbaijan on the Caspian Sea is an ancient site the local people call Atashgah, or “the home of fire.” From time immemorial yogis, ascetics and rishis from India would come here to worship Agni, in the form of fire. The site is situated on a natural gas field. Before the oil reserves were depleted by mining in the late 1800’s burning gas would come up through slits in the ground. Yogis built a temple compound here and lived in small rooms where they would perform severe penance and austerities. Several travelers from Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries mentioned this place in their writings. Eichwald, a geologist from Germany, wrote that Lord Krsna, Ganesh and Siva were worshipped at this place. It is now a protected heritage site and well maintained by the government. It was my fourth visit to Atashgah and Bada Hari’s prabhu’s first. Read more ›

Barnaul is a city and the administrative center of Altai Krai, Russia, located on the Ob River. The Krishna consciousness movement has started performing sankirtana-yajna in different places, and it has been experienced that wherever sankirtana-yajna is performed, many thousands of people gather and take part in it. Imperceptible auspiciousness achieved in this connection should be continued all over the world. The members of the Krishna consciousness movement should perform sankirtana-yajnas one after another, so much that all the people of the world will either jokingly or seriously chant Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare, and thus they will derive the benefit of cleansing the heart. The holy name of the Lord (harer nama [Adi 17.21]) is so powerful that whether it is chanted jokingly or seriously the effect of vibrating this transcendental sound will be equally distributed. It is not possible at the present moment to perform repeated yajnas as Maharaja Barhishat performed, but it is within our means to perform sankirtana-yajna, which does not cost anything. One can sit down anywhere and chant Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.
