Mahaprabhu was a beautiful child, and the ladies of the town came to see Him with presents. His mother’s father, Pandita Nilambara Cakravarti, a renowned astrologer, foretold that the child would be a great personage in time; and he, therefore, gave him the name Visvambhara. The ladies of the neighbourhood styled him Gaurahari on account of His golden complexion, and His mother called Him Nimai on account of the ‘nimba’ tree near which He was born. Beautiful as the lad was, everyone heartily loved to see Him every day. As He grew up He became a whimsical and frolicsome lad. After His fifth year, He was admitted into a pathasala where He picked up Bengali in a very short time. Read more ›

The small Sri Sri Radha Madhava deities (uttsava-murti) are brought in a procession amidst kirtana to the lake at Srila Prabhupada’s Pushpa Samadhi Mandir. Their Lordships are placed on a boat and taken on a boat ride during a boat festival evening. The festivities intend to engage everyone in Krishna’s service, thereby giving us a chance to perfect our lives.
The pujaris apply sandalwood to Their sacred bodies. After the boat ride, Their Lordships are seated on a swing decorated with colorful and fragrant flowers and fruits. Devotees then have the wonderful opportunity to swing Them while singing bhajanas for Their pleasure. They also grab the opportunity to cook and offer bhoga to Their Lordships and distribute them to other devotees! Read more ›

Gopal and Sally Agarwal, an elderly couple who played a significant role in ISKCON’s origins. They are forever etched in the devotees’ collective memory as two of the Western world’s earliest recipients of Srila Prabhupada’s mercy. It was the Agarwals who hosted him in the fall of 1965, before ISKCON was even nominally born, giving him shelter, hospitality, friendship, and love. Indeed, for one month their home served as Prabhupada’s earliest refuge outside India. Read more ›
In our temples we have no capacity to give shelter to all the people. House holder devotees have so many possessions, like their old father, mother, young children, land, cows and bulls. They cannot join the temple with all of these things. If they stay in their homes and do business or whatever, householder devotees can follow the rules and regulations, chanting Hare Krishna and a couple of times in a week gather together for a Nama-hatta program. Every day they will do their activities in their own house and in the evening they join together and do evening program where they can do aroti, Bhagavad-gita class, chanting harinama and prasada distribution. This is called maha milan. Read more ›

It was powerful to be singing about Lord Caitanya with eight other devotees who were performing the austerity of taking a 33-hour train ride from Mumbai to Howrah, enroute to His glorious birthplace. I was happy that the Lord had brought us all together to sing for Him, and also to benefit everyone else in the carriage with the transcendental sound. Read more ›
Rtadhvaja Swami: When I was dealing with the AT&T customer service representative, after answering my initial question my phone, she asked if I had any more questions. I said, “I do have a question that is troubling me. Now I have a 61 year old body, but I remember when I had a 6 year old body. I guess that means I am the consciousness that has experienced different bodies. There must be a supreme consciousness beyond this, and I am wondering how to connect with that.” She replied that is the most amazing thing that she had ever heard, but she agreed about the point of changing bodies, saying that it was also her experience. Indradyumna Swami: Pictured here is the Temple of the Vedic Planatarium, under construction. Before entering Sridham Mayapura we visited the sacred home of Srila Bhaktivinode Thakur, from where he had a vision of a magnificent temple appearing one day in the future just across the Jalangi river. By Srila Prabhupada’s strong desire that temple is now beginning to manifest as the Temple of the Vedic Planetarium. We also visited Nrsimha-pali, where Lord Nrsimha took bath on His way back to Vaikuntha, after killing the demon Hiranyakasipu. Purified of heart and in a mood of humility we finally arrived in ISKCON’s Mayapura Candrodaya Mandir. Good to be home again! Read more ›

This was our first hall festival of the year and was very successful!
We planned for 150 people to come, but around 230+ guests came!
There were a few hiccups such as audio issues and the dancer being late from stuck in traffic!
The feast at the end was very delicious!
We apologise to those who could get seating but next time we will try to book the hall next door with 300 seats. Read more ›

Harinama is the congregational chanting of the holy names of the Lord as shown to us by Srila Prabhupada. Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu introduced the sankirtan movement 500 years ago and it is the spiritual process recommended in the Vedas for the age of Kali, the age we now find ourselves in. From the beginning of the Krishna consciousness movement in the West, Srila Prabhupada directed the devotees to chant congregationally in the temple as well as in the parks and streets of the towns and cities. Like the Vatican and its shepherding of a disparate flock of many-hued sheep, we may end up with several dozen ‘orders’ within the Hare Krishna movement, but at least they will be working under the same name and style. Theologies have a tendency of variation according to the very genuine physical needs and faith-levels of their proponents. As such, they won’t always mesh together, and practices may not always conform to strict orthopraxis, but splintering might be prevented, and we may all be spared the debilitation of any further reduction in size and influence. Splintering diminishes the strength of collegiate effort and repeated division is a scourge that ultimately ends in a loss of power and increased apathy. If people can be united to do good in the world it is helpful for everyone concerned. Read more ›

“Why,” somebody asked me recently “do you want to build something new when there are already so many buildings in Vrindavan?” Of course, ISKCON has a wonderful temple in Vrindavan, with convenient living arrangements at the MVT and the surrounding area. But the town of Vrindavan has become a metropolis, and it has become difficult to find the peace required to enter one’s sacred space. Thus, we recognized the need for a retreat center, which would offer an ideal setting where students could go deep into their spiritual practice. This place would be used exclusively for group and individual retreats. Read more ›

Indradyumna Swami: The Laddu Mar festival takes place a day before the famous Holi festival at Varsana. The residents of Varsana have great fun throwing laddu sweets at each other from balconies, rooftops and inside the temples. Thus while attending the Laddu Mar festival we unexpectedly met face to face with a variety of blue, green, yellow and red powders! Read more ›
