Over the past 50 years, approximately 75,000 ISKCON devotees have received initiation. There are 2,000 home study (Bhakti Vriksa) groups meet regularly (consisting some 30,000 devotees). There are 7 million worshippers attend ISKCON centers annually. Since its establishment ISKCON has published and distributed 516 million books, and gave out 3 billion plates of sanctified vegetarian meals (prasadam) worldwide. Today, there are 1,000 public harinama chanting parties going out on the streets worldwide every week, and 6,000 Vaishnava festivals held every year globally in ISKCON Centers annually.

Hare Krishna! ISKCON Birmingham host 8hr Kirtan festival in honour of 50th anniversary celebrations
Taking place just days after the formal inauguration of ISKCON’s 50th anniversary celebrations in Kolkata, the eight hour kirtan event brought together top kirtaneers from all over country, which really embodied the spirit of a whole UK yatra. HH Prabodhananda Saraswati Goswami Maharaj from Sri Vrindavan Dham also participated in the programme as a special guest. Organised by Birmingham Pandava Sena, hundreds of devotees from all over the UK attended the event. ISKCON Birmingham is renowned for its annual 24 hour kirtan event, which is attended by thousands of devotees.

Hare Krishna! Srila Prabhupada’s journey to US via Nagpur
On the 24th of July 1965 His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada embarked on his epic journey to New york by boarding the Calcutta mail via Nagpur in Mumbai. Srila Prabhupad wrote in his diary, ”To start for Calcutta by the Calcutta Mail via Nagpur. Starting from Bori-Banrer at 19 hours in the evening. Vide Ticket Dt 24/7/65. Luggage booked. Receipt No. A116695 paid Rs. 12/20. ISKCON devotees in Nagpur are very proud of the fact that Srila Prabhupad travelled to “New York via Nagpur”. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of this day 25/7/15, the ISKCON Nagpur devotees went back in time to recieve His Divine Grace traveling on the same train station at platform no.3 in the same train arriving at the same time around 10.30 in the morning.

I went to see him as a visitor. I did not know that he was born in our family. But I had heard from my father a long time back that that man, Abhay Charan, (we used to call him ‘Abhay Kaka’) had went abroad. We knew that very well. But Prabhupada never informed us that he came back with all the foreign disciples. So, I went there, and Prabhupada asked my name. I told him my name, and he said, “Oh, you’re coming from Taliganj?” My name then was Gauri Shankar. My calling name is Shankar. So when I told him my name, immediately he was very pleased. He said “very nice, very nice. I saw you when you were a child.” Maybe when I was 1.5 years old, he used to visit Taliganj and he saw me at that time. I don’t know, but he told me. He named all of my family members, and asked how they are and he said, do you know that I was born and brought up there? I said, No, but I have heard it from some of your brothers and other members.

Srila Prabhupada came to our house in 1971,in March. He came with young people. All westerners. My parents were both Vaishnavas but I was a Mayavadi. Srila Prabhupada, he pointed out to one of his disciples. This young man was looking bright and Srila Prabhupada said to my father, “This boy wants to become Indian, please help him get an Indian citizenship”. My father was a member of Parliament back then. And then Srila Prabhupada said, “He is a personal associate of Lord Chaitanya, he will learn Bengali and preach to ten thousand of people in Bengali”. Why would he do that I thought? I knew Maharprabhu, how could this young boy be an associate of Mahaprabhu? And then I argued with Srila Prabhupada about that for four years. Until one day I agreed. Now we see that same gentleman who was twenty back then is now in front of us, that gentleman is none other than Jayapataka Swami. He learnt Bengali and has thousands of Bengali Disciples.

After 30 glorious years of performance, including almost 20 international tours, UK’s Bhaktivedanta Players marked their outstanding contribution to devotional art with a gala performance of The Mahabharata. This was a brand new production conceived and directed by Jaya Krishna das, and acted by a cast of more than 20. With the soundtrack arranged by actor and musician, Kishor Murti das, and new props and costumes, the stage was set for a riveting experience. A 730 strong audience flocked to the Kadwa Patidar Centre in Kenton, UK, for the premier. For over two hours the audience were led by Lord Krishna Himself, in the role of narrator, into an ancient world of warriors and mystic saints.

“ISKCON will unveil an intricately carved sculpture of Shrila Prabhupada measuring 2.05 metres made of brass with a granite pedestal at Kidderpor Dock, Kolkata from where he began his Journey to West 50 years ago. Since Bengal was the place from where he left, the main programme will be happening there.” The journey that gave the world International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISCKON) will be completing 50 years on Thursday. Celebrations will take place in all the major ISKCON temples in the city and 400 temples across the world.
