Hare Krishna! WSN May 2015 – World Sankirtan Newsletter – astounding results for Mayapur!
May was Mayapur’s month: an astounding 163,624 book points and a 340% increase. I think this is how the Mayapur book distributors are showing their feelings for Jayapataka Swami during his illness. They know that he’s into book distribution and that he’ll be encouraged if he hears great results. It’s not only his disciples who want him to get well, there are thousands of devotees praying for him, because he is such a great inspiration in the movement of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Please stay with us, Jayapataka Swami. Among the large temples Russia’s Moscow-Jagannath temple also did quite well, with 12,469 book points — another increase over 300% (326%).

Hare Krishna! My request is that everyone offer a prayer to Gopal for this selfless servant
BB Govinda Swami: “No !! If you do recover stay here and serve your cows with more and more love and affection. But I order you, never, never, never leave Vrindavan. Never leave … Until that blessed moment arrives when Gopal comes to take you from this Vrindavan to the other Vrindavan, welcomes you with tears, embraces you with love, swears to you that you that He will never allow you to leave again, and then, introduces you to Sudama, Subala, Madhumangala, and you both walk, arm in arm, in the mist of 900,000 cows. He said, “I accept your instruction as an order. I will never leave Vrindavan.” The next day Kurma Rupa returned to Care For Cows. He told me that he wanted to go back there as soon as he could. he said he wanted to hear the cows, smell the cows, breathe the dust of the cows. He looked at me seriously and said; “Maharaja, If you ever have a problem in life .. serve a cow with love .. then, all your problems will dissipate by the grace of Gopal and you’ll be blessed with bhakti.”

Purusottama month being sincerely observed!
Since 17th June, devotees at ISKCON Mayapur are sincerely observing the Purusottama month. Daily ghee lamps are being distributed for free in the Temple hall. Devotees offer these lamps to all the Deities singing melodious Hare Krishna kirtan and bhajans like ‘Jay Radhe Jay Krishna Jay Vrindavan’. Some devotees take daily bath in the Ganges, chant more rounds of Hare Krishna mantra and keep eating simple. There is daily recitation of the mantras: govardhana dharam vande, gopalam gopa rupinam / gokulutsava me isanam, govindam gopika priyam “I worship the lifter of Govardhana Hill, Who has the beautiful form of a cowherd boy, and who continually plays with the gopas. He is the Lord of Gokula wherein everyday is a festival.” vande navaghana-syam dvibhujam murlidharam pitambardharam devam saradham purusottamam “I offer my obeisances to Navaganasyam (Krsna, who has the color of a fresh rain cloud), who is holding the flute with His two hands. I worship Purusottama who is so beautiful in His yellow dress (pitambhara).” A large number of devotees from around the world are sponsoring offerings of ghee lamps, lotuses, fruits and Tulasi to Their Lordships.

All glories to Sri Krishna Sankirtana. All glories to Srila Prabhupada
As I walked passed a security guard greeted me “ Hare Krishna!”, it was special. I wasn’t in an ISKCON temple by the way, I was at Delhi’s largest Liver Hospital. This is what happens to every devotee who walks in through this multi storied speciality hospital , and the magic being created by His Holiness Jayapataka Swami.
His holiness Jayapataka Swami has visited this hospital a number of times for receiving protein supplements and had been admitted here twice as well. His charming personality has made many staff of the hospital take advantage of the Holy Names and be favourable to Krishna’s devotees. The nurses, the doctors , the guards they are all concerned for Maharaj and are literally delighted to be of service to him. Read on for some experiences of the hospital staff had with Maharaj.
Rajesh an experienced nurse who nursed Maharaj at the Intensive Care Unit had to say this about his Holiness. “Immediately after removing the ventilator tubes ,he asked me my name , I said “Rajesh”. He was still partially sedated and had been on the Ventillator for so many days. Patients in that state will hardly speak or remember. I left and got to see him after two days. When I entered he said “Rajesh”! I was stunned. I tell a patient my name so many times and they never remember. And I don’t expect anyone to remember if I told them who I was when they are sedated. He is different , he is not an ordinary person.“ Rajesh went on to tell me that patients treat the doctors with lot of respect, but Jayapataka Swami treats all of them on par with the doctors. He said,” Swamiji respects everyone.“
I was waiting in the corridor to see Dr.Rakhi, the head of the Intensive Care Unit, to ask her about her experiences with Maharaj.I had never met her before, when she saw me waiting she was sure happy and said “Oh it’s you, are you with Swamiji? I’ve been wanting to see him from the time he left ICU, I feel like seeing him everyday, now you reminded me , come lets go and see him”. As we took the stairs she told me what a challenge it was to treat Maharaj because he was such a VIP “every move was so well thought and we were extremely cautious , we knew there are perhaps a lakh of people eagerly waiting for him”, she said. She went on to tell me that it was a pleasure to treat Maharaj as he was very positive and very cooperative. “Patients don’t give us direction, but Swamiji gave us, and that was amazing, especially when it came to important decisions he was with us”. She told me that she was not a very religious person but certainly believed that Maharaj had an aura that was very attractive. “Seeing him gives me some unknown satisfaction and makes me happy” , she added.
I happened to interview doctor Lalitha, she was from the Intensive Care Unit as well. She told me that Maharaj’s motivation was highly commendable. “His inner strength that kept him going, his determination and sheer will power helped us treat him” she said. She was overwhelmed with Maharaj’s sense of humour and said that in such a critical state patients would be rather dull and passive, but Maharaj was always keeping everyone around him happy with his funny jokes. “It was surprising for me to see someone in a critical condition like his, so active and positive”.
It’s quite remarkable to see how Maharaj has captured everyone’s heart. Justin another nurse told me that treating patients wasn’t that easy but nursing Jayaptaka Swami was easy because he was a person with no complaints whatsoever. When he was asked what he feel about Maharaj he said, “I don’t know how to explain this feeling in words. When he came into the ICU I didn’t know he was such a big person. But now I know.” He also added that seeing Maharaj made him happy, and the more he saw him the more he wanted to see him again. Tarun who now nurses Maharaj in the day shift told me that for him, serving Maharaj was not just his duty but his good fortune. “The kind of internal happiness when I serve Swamiji I haven’t got till date with anyone else, it is my privilege to serve him”, he added.
There are more people at the hospital who’s life has been touched forever by this very dear servant of Srila Prabhupada. All glories to Sri Krishna Sankirtana. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.
Your servant,
Nandapriya Nivedita Devi Dasi, Chennai

The ‘JAKARNAVAL -2015’ or the annual Jakarta Carnival on June 7, 2015, celebrating the 488th anniversary of Jakarta was the venue for this year’s Sri Jagannatha Ratha Yatra Festival at Jakarta, Indonesia. The theme of the carnival was ‘Colorful Jakarta’ and the chariot of Lord Jagannatha pulled by so many devotees not only added a special color to the carnival but also gave a distinct flavor and taste to the celebration. By the blessings of Lord Jagannatha and Srila Prabhupada, the 4th Jagannatha Ratha Yatra in Jakarta was wonderfully performed leaving fond memories in the hearts and minds of the devotees.

By ISKCON 50 Global Office
Gauri Das who is a member of the 50th Anniversary International Committee said, “Leaders and the management of many temples may be busy with regular preaching programmes and day-to-day management. Hence to ensure that they can celebrate the 50th anniversary in the most befitting manner, we suggest creating a Committee made up of congregation devotees who can step forward with their time and talent to work with temple management. This will help the 50th anniversary celebrations get broader ownership and make a big impact at your local level.”

Jayapataka Swami visits Delhi temple after his recovery (Album with photos)
Today, 23rd of June, H.H. Jayapataka Swami, ISKCON Congregational Development Minister has finally been discharged after been hospitalized in Delhi for month and a half. He will stay some more days in the Delhi area for routine checkups, and then it will be decided where he would travel. Jayapataka Maharaja was very grateful for all the support and prayers he received from devotees around the world. He personally thanked the medical staff who attended him for all this time.
During these weeks, from his hospital bed, Maharaja has encouraged many to take up the chanting of the Hare Krishna and distributed several books to patients, relatives, doctors, nurses and other hospital staff.
The most regular and positive “parameter”, apart from his breathing, blood pressure, temperature and other physical signs monitored during this crisis, was his constant emphasis on devotees all over ISKCON celebrating the most auspicious Purusottama Month. Currently by the thousands, devotees are reporting a drastic increase in their preaching by encouraging newcomers to perform devotional service. Now many temples at night are celebrating -as in Kartika- the offering of ghee lamps to Krishna and singing authorized bhajans. This is added to the increase of devotional practices (attending aratiks, chanting, reading, offerings, preaching, etc) that devotees are performing.
Just as Srila Prabhupada said, “preaching gives me life”, Jayapataka Swami is practically a medical miracle of determination and endurance for the sake of continuing his preaching mission on behalf of Srila Prabhupada and Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
His personal staff, office and servants convey their gratitude for all the support received during these difficult times. Finally, we all know that is Krishna who is determining that this exemplary preacher remains in this world to continue his service of taking Krishna Consciousness to every possible place.

Hare Krishna! Remembering Lila Shakti Devi Dasi
Bhakti Madhurya Govinda Goswami: Another great soul has left this world to join Srila Prabhupada in nitya lila, that is my God sister, Lila Shakti Devi Dasi. In “modern ISKCON” she is known hardly at all by “newer devotees”. However, there was a time in the history of ISKCON decades ago when she was world famous as one of the world’s top distributors of Srila Prabhupada’s books. I knew her very well in her “hey-days”, or “golden years” of fame as a book distributor, for we were both living in Los Angeles, California, USA in those days. She was a Los Angeles book distributor, helping to make world history when Srila Prabhupada was so pleased by the hundreds of thousands or more books being sold, especially by the Los Angeles temple.

The Competition is Not Between One Religion and another!
Question: Nowadays different religions, especially those with extreme values, are aggressively penetrating into different parts of the world. Do you feel threatened? Do you consider them your competitors?
Radhanath Swami: I don’t see that it is religion that is causing the hatred, discrimination, and terrorism. It is just a very infatuated ego working in the name of religion, in the name of nationalism, etc.
Hitler and his people, they were like terrorists murdering millions and millions of innocent people, which wasn’t in the name of religion. That was in the name of a political agenda, and look at how much harm they did. And people have done the same kind of harm in the name of religion too. It is just that we superimpose our own arrogance, insecurity, envy and greed in the name of nationalism, politics, religion, or whatever it may be.
So the competition is not between one religion and another religion. The competition is between the good dog and the bad dog that is barking in our hearts, and in their hearts. For some people it is the barking of bad dog that is ruling over and controlling their decisions in life, and causing them to influence others. So the real competition is between light and dark, good and evil, truth and ignorance, in whatever form it takes.

Hare Krishna! Back to School: Three New Lessons for the New Goloka Community
While NCGS certainly provides students with the academic instruction and subjects they need to progress and become functional adults, our main mission is to teach them about Krishna and to love kirtan! This is what any devotee school should do, first and foremost. It really does take a village to raise a child (especially Vaishnava children). It became evident during the school year that although we have many well-wishers and supporters, a larger hands-on collective is needed. The vision of this community school is that it is the community’s school. Everyone is welcome to participate, and their input is valuable.

Hare Krishna! Brahmananda Katha
In the early days of ISKCON back at 26 2nd Avenue, Brahmananda Prabhu was all-pervasive. Whenever I would stop in at the Matchless Gifts, he was always parked Buddha-like on the rug chanting on his big red beads. He spoke rarely: he controlled the atmosphere simply by his glance which could be intimidating. Once when a guest inquired, he happily explained his name, “One who only likes only transcendental bliss.” I never forgot his presence and later when I wrote to Shrila Prabhupada from New Mexico that I wanted to re-join the NY devotees, His Divine Grace wrote back, “Yes, go to New York. Brahmananda will take care of you.”

Can You be Spiritual Without Being Religious?
Question: Is it necessary to equate spirituality with religion? Do you think people can be spiritual, having values, but not be religious at all?
Radhanath Swami: It depends on our definition of spirituality and religion. Values are required to be genuine in any spiritual or religious path. In the yoga system there are yamas and niyamas which are based on our values, on our ethics, on our morality, because we can’t truly build our spiritual experience unless we have those values. When we see a religion or spiritual path without those values in it, we often turn away from that religion or spirituality – whatever we may call it. So those values are necessary.
