Life and pastimes of Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.
“Most of His contemporary biographers have mentioned certain anecdotes regarding Caitanya which are simple records of His early miracles. It is said that when He was an infant in His mother’s arms He wept continually, and when the neighbouring ladies cried ‘Haribol’ He used to stop. Thus there was a continuation of utterance of ‘Haribol’ in the house, foreshewing the future mission of the hero. It has also been stated that when His mother gave Him sweetmeats to eat, He ate clay instead of the food. His mother, asking for the reason, He stated that as every sweetmeat was nothing but clay transformed, He could eat clay as well. His mother, who was also the consort of a ‘pandita’, explained that every article in a special state was adapted to a special use. Earth, while in the state of a jug, could be used as a water pot, but in the state of a brick such a use was not possible. Clay, therefore in the form of sweetmeats was usable as food, but clay in its other states was not. The lad was convinced and admitted His stupidity in eating clay and agreed to avoid the mistake in the future. Another miraculous act has been related.

March 20. ISKCON 50 – S.Prabhupada Daily Meditations.
Satsvarupa dasa Goswami: Prabhupada is Praiseworthy.
The concept of guru-disciple is not foreign anywhere in the world. Credit is given to teachers and spiritual directors, but not with the emphasis found in the Vaisnava sampradāya. People think that too much dependence or praise of the guru is cultish, a kind of deification of an ordinary man. They look for feet of clay in all heroes, and signs of exaggerated and sentimental dependency in the followers. So we strive to exemplify the real relationship. The spiritual master is praiseworthy, and although we may be foolish, he’s still able to lead us out of the material world, to shelter in eternality, bliss and knowledge. If the world leaders are not praising Srila Prabhupada in the authorized parampara, then “stand-ins” such as this writer will have to do it until the world discovers that this is the real responsibility of everyone.
Dear Srila Prahbupada,
You are a reservoir of Krishna consciousness. You pump fresh water into the parched population. You replenish your own resources in the cloudbank of Krishna’s mercy. His blessings flow down to us from the mountains of the previous acaryas. The reign of Krishna’s mercy runs down the mountainsides and deposits the rich loam of the acarya’s realization directly into your own reservoir.

A Hip New Way to Preach – The Artwork of Adidev das.
Adideva das is known for his artistic contributions in the Krishna conscious community. Some of his sculptures include the dioramas in the Los Angeles and Detroit temples and the 3=D dioramas at the Festival of India. At New Raman Reti, our japa walk features his sculptures depicting the philosophy of the Bhagavad Gita.
Srila Prabhupada encouraged him to work as an artist. Adideva prabhu describes his introduction to Krishna consciousness as making art. During his first meeting with Srila Prabhupada, he was asked to sculpt Panca Tattva. Srila Prabhupada took the sculpting work quite seriously and said that he wanted dioramas all over the world. Due to circumstances, funds for this project were frozen but Adideva prabhu’s preaching through art prevailed.

March 19. ISKCON 50 – S.Prabhupada Daily Meditations.
Satsvarupa dasa Goswami: On Love of Guru and Krishna.
I recently had a conversation with a friend who claimed that theoreticians estimate that the average person accomplishes only 10% of his promises, is open to only 10% of his emotions, and his heart is only 10% alive with love. If there is any truth in that, it isfrightening to consider that I will miss out on so much in life. I have the greatest fortune to be linked to the Supreme Lord and to his best devotees, but if I give only 10% of my love, that is the greatest misfortune.
Krishna consciousness is about love. It is the art and science of love, not just ordinary love, but Supreme love – love of God. Krishna loves us and He wants us to serve Him. “Offer me with devotion, a leaf, a flower, a fruit …” But I am not immersed in love. Therefore my relationship with Krishna takes place through my connection with my spiritual master. I need to learn how to love Srila Prabhupada. I still haven’t learned this lesson, but it is meant to help me learn the secrets of loving exchange with Srila Prabhupada and Lord Krishna.
Prabhupada acknowledged self-esteem as an important element of this relationship. We cannot become a surrendered servant by pounding ourselves into the ground like a wooden peg. And neither can another person pound us into loving surrender. I have to meet my needs. I need to serve my spiritual master. And I need to do it with self-knowledge. When I know how to love him, then he will teach me how to love Krishna. I am groping toward this end.

This island represents sravanam (hearing). Places covered in Simantadvip tour are Yoga pitha, Srivas angan, Advaita bhavan, Caitanya math, Chand Kazi samadhi and Sri Jagannath mandir.
Yoga pitha: Yoga Pitha is the appearance place of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. It is the home of His father Jagannatha Mishra. Here you can have darsan of several Deities including Sri Panca Tattva, Sri Lakshmi Nrsimhadev and Mahaprabhu with His wives Lakshmipriya and Visnupriya.
Srivas Angan: It is the birthplace of Harinama sankirtan. Sri Caitanya and His associates used to have all night long kirtan here.
Advaita Bhavan: Advaita Acharya lived in Santipur but kept this Bhavan for His Mayapur visits. Deities of Lord Chaitanya (standing) and Advaita Acarya (sitting and offering) are worshiped here.
Chaitanya Math: This temple and the matha were established by Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura in 1918 and it was his headquarters for his preaching throughout India. He called this place Vraja-pattana, the place where Vraja is manifest. By his spiritual potency, Syama-kunda, Radha-kunda and Giri Govardhana of Vrindavana are all manifest here.
Chand Kazi samadhi: Chand Kazi was the Chief Magistrate of Navadvipa. He was a devout & strict Muslim and he oppressed Hindus in their religious practices. Later Kazi took shelter of Mahaprabhu’s lotus feet and he became a devotee. His samadhi was built at this place after his disappearance from this world.
Sri Jagannath mandir: The holy dhama of Sri Kshetra or Jagannatha Puri is eternally manifest in this holy place and one can attain all the benefits of visiting Jagannatha Puri by visiting the Jagannatha Mandir at Simantadvipa.

Back to Godhead magazine. I like to scan the titles of Srila Prabhupada’s Back to Godhead essays written during the War: “Mr. Bernard Shaw’s Wishful Desire” (referring to Shaw’s desire that Gandhi’s 76th birthday could actually be his 35th birthday). Srila Prabhupada wrote, “We heartily join with Mr. Shaw in his attempt to subtract forty-one years from the present age of Mahatma Gandhi. But death does not respect our wishful desire.” He called another essay, “Churchill’s Humane World.” (Churchill wanted to get rid of the “National Frenzy of Hate.” Srila Prabhupada writes, “The frenzy of hatred is another side of the frenzy of love … This position of equilibrium free from love and hatred is attained only when men are sufficiently educated.”
He called other articles, “No Time, a Chronic Disease of the Common Man,” “A Scholar’s Deluded,” and so on. The Srila Prabhupada-lilamrta describes them: “His articles were shorter, this time displaying the flair of a news columnist as with philosophical criticism, verve and a touch of ironic humor. He commented on world leaders and crises.” (Vol. 1, page 116)

Realizations from a pilgrimage in Mayapur.
Aniruddha Dasa: Flew into Melbourne this morning after an odd night on the flight from Singapore to Melbourne. I don’t think it possible to be comfortable in an airplane even if you are in First Class. We were in Business. We used up frequent flyer points, just for the record.
Here’s the rub. The material world is meant for suffering. First class, second class and third class passengers are all suffering in the material world. Whichever class you are in you can’t avoid the jet lag of material life.
Otherwise we had a very productive and enthusing time in the holy dhāmas. By Kṛṣṇa and the devotees’ grace I managed to participate in full morning programs and focused japa sessions, especially in Mayapur. What a wonderful place to chant. It is immensely powerful. Now the challenge is to duplicate the same here at home. Visiting the dhāma and taking advantage of the valuable association there is meant to enthuse us to do the same, wherever we are. That way all the temples of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness are places of pilgrimage where one can associate with and learn from those who know the science of Kṛṣṇa. Those sincere persons looking for spiritual life will naturally be attracted, like iron filings to a magnet. The atmosphere should be so surcharged with knowledge and renunciation; focused on service to the Lord, that it is irresistible. And it is!
That comes from chanting good rounds, hearing attentively, remembering who we are and why we are here, serving with the goal of pleasing Kṛṣṇa whether it be the upkeep of His temple, or the distribution of Prabhupāda’s books, distributing prasādam, or whatever.
If we, all of us, keep Kṛṣṇa in the centre then we will be happy and so will those who associate with us.
The picture is from the ISKCON Disciple Course I taught on the weekend in ISKCON Dwarka (Delhi).

Why do you immediately jump to Krishna’s pastimes from the Tenth Canto?
Hari Sauri das: When we were in Bhuvaneshwar, in late January and early February of 1977, two or three moviemakers came. They told Srila Prabhupada that they were making a movie and that they wanted to popularize Krishna’s pastimes. They said,
“Hare Krishna is becoming popular, and we want everybody to know about Krishna. We want to show Krishna’s Vrindavan pastimes. Since you are the guru of the Hare Krishna movement, we would like to get your blessings for making this movie, and in the movie we’d also like to offer you our humble thanks for popularizing Krishna’s pastimes.”
Prabhupada immediately told them, “No.” Prabhupada said, “Why do you immediately jump to Krishna’s pastimes from the Tenth Canto? Nobody will understand. They will take it as mythology when Krishna kills the Trinavarta whirlwind demon or whatever other pastimes.”
They said, “But, Swamiji, everybody in India is a Krishna bhakta.” As it happens, the evening before, Prabhupada had had a conversation with an educated Indian man who asked, “Who is Krishna?”
Prabhupada had been shocked and chastised that man, saying, “You are born in India and you do not know who Krishna is?”
Prabhupada mentioned this conversation in his evening lecture also by saying, “Here we are in Bharatabhumi, but now people are so degraded that they’re asking, ‘Who is Krishna?’”
So when these filmmakers said, “Oh but, Swamiji, in India everybody’s a Krishna bhakta,” Prabhupada said, “You say that they’re Krishna bhaktas, but last night a guest asked me, ‘Who is Krishna?’”
Then Prabhupada said, “Why don’t you first make a movie of the First Canto and then go progressively through the Bhagavatam and do the Tenth Canto at the end?”
But, of course, they wanted the Tenth Canto, Krishna with the gopis, and they were simply trying to capitalize on Prabhupada’s popularity by advertising, “Oh, this movie is approved by Bhaktivedanta Swami.”
But they could not get an endorsement from Srila Prabhupada. Prabhupada would not budge an inch even after they brought up various arguments for about a half an hour. Prabhupada said, “If you make one movie of the First Canto, then we’ll see.”

Satsvarupa dasa Goswami: Disappointment from India.
On February 8, Srila Prabhupada had written to India’s new Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, requesting her to sanction the release of money from India. A reply, dated Feb. 25, New Delhi, came from the Prime Minister’s official secretary, Mr. L. K. Gha:
Dear Swamiji,
The Prime Minister has seen your letter of February 8, 1966. She appreciates the spirit which prompted you to carry the spiritual message of Srimad Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam to other countries. Owing to the critical foreign exchange situation which the country is facing, it is greatly regretted that it will not be possible to assist you from here in your plan to set up a Radha-Krishna temple.
But Prabhupada had other hopes. After writing to the Prime Minister, he had written again to Tirtha Maharaja asking him to request Dr. Radha Krishnan to persuade the government to sanction the release of funds. He waited for one month.
No answer.

March 16. ISKCON 50 – S.Prabhupada Daily Meditations.
Satsvarupa dasa Goswami: The Perfect Disciple.
Srila Prabhupada told us many things about his relationship with his spiritual master. One time, Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura reprimanded him when it appeared that Srila Prabhupada had diverted his attention from his Guru Maharaja’s lecture. When they first met, Srila Prabhupada debated with Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati about India’s independence. Prabhupada told us, “I liked being defeated by my spiritual master.” He dreamt of his spiritual master, too, mostly the same serious dream, in which Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati told Srila Prabhupada to take sannyāsa.
His spiritual master praised him highly on a number of occasions for his attentive hearing, and for his poetry and prose writings. He said, “Whatever he writes, publish it.” When Srila Prabhupada’s godbrothers asked Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati to make Srila Prabhupada the president of the Bombay Temple, Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura said, “It is better that he lives outside your company. He will do everything himself. You do not have to recommend him.”
After their first meeting, Srila Prabhupada had to travel away on business, but he often thought fondly of his spiritual master. Of course, they had some personal meetings in which important things were conveyed to our Srila Prabhupada, especially his Guru Maharaja’s order, “If you ever get money, print books.” Then, near the end of his Guru Maharaja’s life, they exchanged letters. Srila Prabhupada asked, “How may I serve you?” And his spiritual master replied, “You can explain in English our thoughts and arguments. This will do much good to yourself as well as to your audience. I have every hope that you can turn yourself into a very good English preacher if you serve the mission.”

Srila Prabhupada: If death takes place, let it take here. There is nothing to be said new. Whatever I have to speak, I have spoken in my books. Now you try to understand it and continue your endeavor. Whether I am present or not, it doesn’t matter. As Krishna is living eternally, similarly, living being also lives eternally. But “One who has done service to the Lord lives forever.” So you have been taught to serve Krishna, and with Krishna we’ll live eternally. Our life is eternal. Wealth is not a source of pleasure but a source of entanglement and anxiety.
One of the King Louis’s of France, was so completely disgusted with the falsity of palace life, he and some of his intimate friends would sometimes leave the palace and dress themselves as cow herds, and milk the cows and sport in the fields.
There is one song where Bhaktivinoda Thakura prays he would rather take birth as an insect in the house of a devotee than Lord Brahma. Why? If you take birth as an insect in the home of a devotee, that devotee will give you protection. He will not call the exterminator.
Lord Caitanya describes world of birth and death to be like an ocean because if you are drowning in a ocean, you have to be pulled out by someone. Similarly, we need Krishna to pull us out of samsara [the ocean of birth and death].
Srila Prabhupada said the love of a mother for her child is the closest thing to the unconditional love of the pure soul for God.
Srila Prabhupada said we should call out when we chant like a baby calling out for its mother.
