Balarama Jayanti – August 25, 2018
→ The Toronto Hare Krishna Temple!

On Saturday, August 25th we will be celebrating Balarama Jayanti, the auspicious appearance day of Lord Balarama. Lord Balarama appeared as the elder brother of Lord Krishna when He descended five thousand years ago. While Lord Krishna has a dark bluish cloud complexion, Lord Balarama’s complexion is like a white autumn cloud. He possesses boundless strength which is represented by the plough He carries. Lord Balarama is considered the adi-guru, the original spiritual master for everyone. No one can approach Lord Krishna without first getting the mercy of Lord Balarama.

This year we are grateful to have Vaisesika prabhu and Nirakula mataji join us for the festivities.

They will attend the Monthly Sankirtan Festival (MSF) outing earlier during the day between 1pm and 5pm at Old City Hall (corner of Bay St and Queen St W). This is a wonderful opportunity to greet passersby with some chanting and dancing as well as to share transcendantal books with them on this special day.

Our visiting guests will also attend the evening celebrations at the temple starting at 6pm. Join us as we celebrate the auspicious appearance of Lord Balarama with kirtan, a special class given by Vaisesika prabhu, arati and sumptuous prasadam!

Srila Prabhupada – Our Founder Acarya Seminar
→ The Toronto Hare Krishna Temple!

For millennia the teachings and the rich culture of bhakti-yoga, or Krishna Consciousness, had been hidden within the borders of India. Today, millions around the globe express their gratitude to Srila Prabhupada for revealing the timeless wisdom of bhakti to the world.

Śrīla Prabhupāda did not simply carry the message of Lord Caitanya and Lord Krishna to us. While that in itself is a glorious task, Śrīla Prabhupāda, as the Founder-Ācārya, created the very foundation, function and vision of ISKCON as a global community aiming for the “respiritualization of the entire human society.” Śrīla Prabhupāda’s role, is ongoing. His presence is to be felt in the life of every ISKCON devotee today, and in the lives of devotees many centuries into the future. Understanding how Śrīla Prabhupāda is in the center of our lives and our society, and knowing how to keep him in that essential role, is the purpose of this course.

Please join in to participate in this series of Seminars – Founder Acarya, facilitated by HG Suresvara Dasa conveniently located all over the GTA to understand and celebrate the preeminent position of Srila Prabhupada in ISKCON as well as every follower’s foundational relationship with him.

To RSVP and for more questions, please contact us at : education@torontokrishna.com

About the Speaker:

Suresvara dasa Vanacari joined the Hare Krishna movement in 1970
and received 1 st and 2 nd initiations from Srila Prabhupada in 1971 &
1972. Over the years Suresvara’s service has centered around Prabhupada’s
books—studying them, distributing them, helping to produce them,
writing articles based on them, and now, teaching from them.
In 2011, while teaching at the Mayapur Institute for Higher Education, his
concern over the lack of connection many younger devotees were
feeling for our founder-acarya reached a tipping point, so that year he
began researching and presenting the seminar, “Srila Prabhupada, Our
Founder-Acarya.”
With the encouragement of the Mayapur Institute and the GBC
committee, “Srila Prabhupada’s Position,” Suresvara has been traveling
the ISKCON world with the founder-acarya series since 2011, helping
devotees deepen their relationship with, commitment to, and love for our
beloved founder-acarya, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami
Prabhupada.

Snana-Yatra Festival – July 1, 2018
→ The Toronto Hare Krishna Temple!

A sure sign that the annual Ratha-Yatra (Festival of India) is just around the corner (July 13-15, 2018) is the annual Jagannatha Snana-Yatra festival!

Snana-Yatra is a wonderful festival, wherein Deities of Lord Jagannatha, Lord Balarama and Lady Subhadra will be bathed amidst amazing kirtan and chanting!

After the bathing ceremony (Snana-Yatra), Lord Jagannātha becomes “sick”. He is therefore removed to His private quarters, where no one can see Him.

During the Ratha-Yatra Festival on July 14th, Lord Jagannātha will once again come before the public. Thus for thirteen days after the bathing ceremony, Lord Jagannātha is not visible to any visitors! Don’t miss out this last opportunity to see Lord Jagannatha before his grand Ratha-Yatra festival!

Ratha-Yatra Festival is Coming! July 14-15, 2018
→ The Toronto Hare Krishna Temple!

Srila Prabhupada’s mercy continues to bless and nourish our international movement in a myriad of ways, and the global Ratha-Yatras are indeed a prime example of but one such benediction. Srila Prabhupada’s grace has transformed the once-rare opportunity to pull the ropes of the beautiful chariots of Lord Jagannatha, Lord Baladeva, and Lady Subhadra into an international phenomenon for devotees the world over.

We in Toronto’s Hare Krishna community are exceedingly fortunate to have had the opportunity to present this Ratha-Yatra festival for the past four decades where thousands enjoy the festival amidst the association of great Vaisnavas and ecstatic kirtans.

We would like to humbly invite everyone to join us this year, on July 14th-15th, 2018 for our 46th Annual Ratha-Yatra here in Toronto.

Festivities will kick off on Friday, July 13th as we celebrate the Festival of the Golden Moon, a 12-Hour Kirtan, featuring many kirtaneers from around the world! We will be blowing the roof off New Remuna Dhama (ISKCON Toronto) with this 12-hour kirtan marathon. Once again, the special event is planned for Friday, July 13th from 10:00am to 10:00pm. This kirtan event is not to be missed!

Of course, this precedes the big weekend! Toronto’s Ratha-Yatra has the unique distinction of being accredited by Madhuha das, the organizer of the traveling Festival of India tour, as being the largest Ratha-Yatra in North America with close to 40,000 people in attendance and a veritable plethora of Srila Prabhupada’s books sold each year!

Some of the unique features of Toronto’s Ratha-Yatra include:

A Parade Right Through Downtown Toronto
A “Bhajan Kutir” with Non-Stop Kirtan
“Yoga Meltdown” – A Mini Yoga Festival
Live Cooking Demonstrations
Internationally-Acclaimed Arts & Entertainment and much more!

Most significantly, Toronto’s Ratha-Yatra presents a unique and wonderful outreach opportunity. Thousands of Torontonians observe the parade as it proceeds down Yonge Street and dance with us when the kirtan reaches its climax in the famous “Toronto Tunnel”.

Immediately following the parade, festival-goers enjoy a kirtan-filled ferry ride over to Centre Island, where celebrations continue for the rest of the weekend. While on Centre Island devotees will be able to enjoy the association of a number of distinguished personalities! The Centre Island festival-pavilion will also host a children’s area featuring fun and wholesome, Vedic-themed activities and events. All in all, Toronto’s Ratha-Yatra will offer everyone a chance to experience a unique festival promoting simple-living and high-thinking, with kirtan on the streets, underground, and on the water!

We hope to see you at the big event! Hare Krishna!!!

Lord Krishna will accept service through that form. The Lord is omnipotent, all-powerful; therefore, by His incarnation as arcā-vigraha, He can accept the services of the devotee. March MSF – Breaking Language Barriers
→ The Toronto Hare Krishna Temple!

We would like to present a summary report of our last Monthly Sankirtan Festival (MSF). This article has been written by one of our younger members of the community, Krishna Rajesh. We will be featuring more of these reports so you can follow along with all of the exciting developments and learn how to get involved!

On Saturday, March 31st 2018, Toronto Sankirtan Team (TST) celebrated its 106th consecutive Monthly Sankirtan Festival (MSF) – a monthly outing on the last Saturday of each month, where devotees take with them the beautiful message of Krishna Consciousness to the public in the form of Srila Prabhupada’s books, Krishna Prasad and the Hare Krishna Mahamantra! Started in June 2009, MSFs are now organized across the GTA by TST regional teams: TST East, TST Brampton, TST West, TST Etobicoke, TST Markham, and TST Central.

Fig 1: Jennifer (left) and Zara (right) from China get Srila Prabhupada’s mercy. The mother, Jennifer, borrowed money from her daughter Zara to get the books so she received the blessings of 3 books!

The March MSF was a lot of fun as 6 teams went out for door-to-door Sankirtan spending 3-5 hours knocking doors, and sharing transcendental knowledge and smiles to those who opened their doors! With the introduction of Language Cards, the TST Warriors distributed Srila Prabhupad’s books in cumulative effort to people of various ethnicities, gender, and age.

From devotees as young as pre-schoolers, to seasoned warriors, everyone got together and united under one goal: the goal of distributing Srila Prabhupad’s books. TST West knocked approximately 110 apartments, visited one grocery store, and distributed 84 transcendental literatures, collected lots of Bhoga and Laxmi.

TST Central visited two apartment buildings, knocked almost 270 doors and distributed 87 transcendental books, collected $90 of Laxmi and Bhoga.

TST Brampton distributed 28 books. And TST Etobicoke knocked almost 75 doors and distributed 15 transcendental books for Bhoga and Laxmi. In total, there were 24 devotees involved. Jai Srila Prabhupad! It couldn’t have been done without the blessings of the Vaishnavas, and the hard work and dedication of all the devotees who participated at the front and back end.

Fig 2: Mahabhagavat Prabhu’s (right) new Spanish speaking friend (left) who was touched by Srila Prabhupada’s book and “paid” in whatever best he could find in his house—water bottles.

Nrsimha Caturdasi – Saturday, April 28, 2018
→ The Toronto Hare Krishna Temple!

Saturday, April 28 we will be celebrating Nrsimha Caturdasi, the appearance day of Nrsimhadeva, the half-man half-lion incarnation of Lord Krishna.
Nrsimhadeva appeared to protect a saintly five-year-old boy Prahlada, the son of Hiranyakasipu, a demoniac king. Hiranyakasipu constantly tortured Prahlada for worshipping his worst enemy, Lord Krishna. He despised the Lord and obtained several benedictions from Brahma in order to make himself as close to being immortal as possible. Nevertheless, Hiranyakasipu was killed without breaking any of these benedictions by Narsimhadeva who appeared from a pillar in the demon’s palace. As He had stated in the Bhagavad Gita, He appeared when there was a need for Him to protect His devotees and annihilate the demons.
Let us pray for the protection of Nrsimhadeva to help annihilate all obstacles in our spiritual path. Join us for the festivities Saturday evening starting at 4pm!

Screening of "Hare Krishna" Film – January 22, 2018
→ The Toronto Hare Krishna Temple!

The Toronto Hare Krishna Temple is very excited to announce that the hit film “Hare Krishna! The Mantra, the Movement and the Swami who started it all” is having another screening in Toronto on Monday, January 22 at 7:00pm at the Cineplex Theatres at Yonge and Dundas.

TO BOOK TICKETS PLEASE CLICK HERE! 50 tickets must be booked before the screening is confirmed so please book as soon as possible!

The following is a synopsis about the film, from the official website:

1965: America is in turmoil. Unprecedented introspection and questioning of societal norms roil the country. Prabhupada, an unassuming 70-year-old Swami from India, arrives in New York City alone and without support or money. He carries only the ancient scriptures he has translated, and the firm faith in his teacher’s request: “offer spiritual wisdom to the people of the world!”

Suddenly thrust into the raging counterculture movement, Prabhupada speaks of the world’s real need, which is not necessarily satisfied by political or social revolutions, but by a revolution of consciousness. This divergence from the status quo successfully captures the attention of a generation of youth seeking answers to life’s existential questions. From a tiny storefront on 26th 2nd Avenue, Prabhupada shares with them the idea that the way to find real happiness, love and freedom is to search within and connect to your true self. All this, the Swami says, begins by simply chanting a rhythmic, meditative 16-word mantra – Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.

This universal message resonates with more and more people, including musician George Harrison whose hit song ‘My Sweet Lord’, features the Hare Krishna chant. From there, Prabhupada’s movement explodes, and his followers – now known as the Hare Krishnas – become infamous for chanting and dancing in the streets.

Not everyone is enamored by the enthusiastic, and at times overzealous, fervor of Prabhupada’s young followers. As more people join the movement, parents and community leaders begin to view it as a dangerous cult. Devotees are charged with brainwashing and are taken to court in a controversial case that threatens to undermine everything that Prabhupada has worked for…

Hare Krishna! is the true story of an unexpected, prolific, and controversial revolutionary. Using never-before-seen archival verite, Prabhupada’s own recorded words, and interviews with his early followers, the film takes the audience behind-the-scenes of a cultural movement born in the artistic and intellectual scene of New York’s Bowery, the hippie mecca of Haight Ashbury, and the Beatle mania of London, to meet the Swami who started it all.

Season of Giving – Sastra Dana!
→ The Toronto Hare Krishna Temple!

The world today is undergoing a major crisis; people are experiencing an all-time high level of stress, with insecurity and temporariness of life plaguing all walks of life. Spiritual books like Bhagavad-Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam (the Bhagavat Purana) help alleviate these issues by bringing superior knowledge and happiness into people’s lives.

In the Bhagavad-Gita, Sri Krishna states, “For one who explains this supreme secret to the devotees, pure devotional service is guaranteed, and at the end he will come back to Me. There is no servant in this world more dear to Me than he, nor will there ever be one more dear.” (BG 18.68 & 69).

Thus, we are asking for your help with “Sastra Dana” or sharing of knowledge, by sponsoring Bhagavad-Gitas or other Vedic texts. For example, sponsoring 108 hard-bound Bhagavad-Gitas is $1,080, 108 soft-bound Gitas is only $540, and 108 other smaller Vedic books is $216. You can give as much as your heart desires. There is no minimum, and no maximum, the whole world is in dire need of this literature. Please note that your kind donations towards Sastra Dana will be tax deductible.

This year we have been successful in placing Bhagavad Gitas in over fifty prisons across Canada, over a hundred hotels and motels including the Park Inn by Radisson, Four Points by Sheraton, Homewood Suites by Hilton, and Courtyard by Marriott as well as replenishments for Hospitals. Yoga Centres and Libraries continue to be a focus.

The success of this program is further evident by the requests that we get from organizations asking for more books or replenishments. We began this Sastra Dana program just a few short years ago in Toronto and in these years, we have placed over 60,000 books thanks to your support and blessings.

To learn more about where we’ve placed these books please click here.

Please support the Sastra Dana Program wholeheartedly to bring these books to newer avenues.
