Princeton, Illinois

Down the 6 and the 26

Well, the Midwest is what I thought it would be-- fields of corn with intermittent crops of soya beans.  It has a relatively optimistic feel here.  Homes and barns are people’s pride and joy.  Towns are quaint.  Cities are small, to the exclusion of Chicago.

As for this morning, somebody out there is letting others know about the walk.  In a shady-treed area, along Route 26, a fellow pulled over his vehicle ahead of me.  Parking was tight and I imagine he was in a hurry.  He walked across the road some distance, held a bottle of water in the air indicating, “This is for you,” and proceeded to place it on a road guard for me to see.  He then crossed the road back to his car and went on his merry way.

Nice!

While trekking with Gopal, we passed by a home at the precinct of Princeton.  An elderly couple, enjoying the lawn-chair mood in their front yard on this fine summer afternoon, waved to us passers-by.  The woman said something that was inaudible.  I wished them a happy, upcoming July the 4th.  To this she responded, “And today is Canada Day!”

The two nations, the U.S. and Canada, have enjoyed a long-standing, congenial relationship.  Let it be known that their birthdays are only three days apart.  Perhaps there’s some kind of soul connection.

May the Source be with you!

ISKCON 50
→ Servant of the Servant

Today marks a half century for ISKCON. It is predicted to progress for 100 centuries. From that perspective, ISKCON is pretty much in its infancy. But from where we are standing, 50 years seems a long journey since its official inception July 13 1966.

I have been privileged to be a part of this esteemed institution. I have had the opportunity to meet many like minded souls and very pure souls. I cannot say I can find any other place in this entire planet earth where brilliant minds and pure souls gather in all in one place. I have made many friends in part due to this institution. For that, I am very grateful.

Initially, the incorporated ISKCON was simply a band of lose devotees in one building under an effulgent leader. Who knew, after 50 years, it would truly become a global organization that it is today. This also means global challenges. When we have devotees from diverse backgrounds gathering in one place, there is bound to be difference of opinion perhaps not in ideology but in execution of ideology. Therefore, it is necessary to have leaders who have sound management skills who can manage resources and people efficiently. As for ideological differences if any, we must go back to the books and tapes of Srila Prabhupada.

As long as ISKCON puts its Founder Acharya always in the center by following his instructions’ strictly, then I believe nothing can stop ISKCON for the next 100 centuries. I want to thank all the devotees’ who tirelessly work as a cohesive unit, despite differences, to serve the different instructions’ of Srila Prabhupada, a beacon of light for this dark age of quarrel and hypocrisy.

My humble obeisances and heartfelt gratitude to the Founder Acharya of ISKCON His Divine Grace AC Bhaktivedanta Swami to have the vision to establish a spiritual movement that is a receptacle for genuine seekers of truth!

“Relishing Shikshashtakam” – Course in New Raman Reti, Alachua, Florida
→ The Spiritual Scientist

September 3 – 5 (10 am – 12:30 pm and 3 – 5:30 pm each day)

The Siksastakam is one of the most important works of Gaudiya Vaisnavism, being the composition of Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu Himself. It spans the entire gamut of the devotional journey from a seeker’s level to a seer’s level. In sweet and profound verses, it gives us guidelines for deepening our relationship with Krishna and His eminently accessible manifestation as the holy name.

Bhaktivinoda ThakuraBhaktivinoda Thakura considered the Siksastakam to be of such sublime importance that he wrote a full commentary on it. Drawing from his commentary, as well as the wisdom given by his preceding and succeeding acaryas, including and especially our Srila Prabhupada, this seminar will illumine the breadth and the depth of bhakti-yoga centered on the chanting of the holy names:
Breadth of bhakti in terms of how it encompasses our whole life and our attitudes towards life’s ups and downs, empowering us to go through and grow through them with humility and tolerance.
Depth of bhakti in terms of how it unleashes the strongest emotions hidden in the deepest recesses of the soul and elevates them to the loftiest level of selfless love, as manifested by Lord Caitanya while embodying the paragon of all devotion, Srimati Radharani.
Replete with practical insights, illustrated through PowerPoint slides and complemented with abundant time for discussion, this Siksastakam seminar will help devotees connect at a deeper and stronger level with Krishna and His holy names by following this natural sequence of topics:
1. The six-pronged flame of the supreme sacrifice of the holy name.
(Siksastakam text 1)
2. The mysterious non-difference of Krishna and His holy names.
(Siksastakam text 2)
3. Humility is not self-pity; tolerance is not passivity — channeling the power of humility and tolerance.
(Siksastakam text 3)
4. Rise beyond attachment and detachment to commitment.
(Siksastakam text 4)
5. We are unqualified, but we are never disqualified.
(Siksastakam text 5)
6. The transcendental is beyond the sentimental and the judgmental.
(Siksastakam text 6)
7. Love in separation is the sweetness of fullness in emptiness.
(Siksastakam text 7)
8. Selfless devotion is not less for the self, but is infinitely more
(Siksastakam text 8)

Srila Prabhupada: Our centers are like the oasis in a vast desert. In the desert there is no water, but occasionally if one is fortunate he may come in contact with an oasis and he is saved. Similarly in this material world we are drying up due to a lack of spiritual knowledge. Our ISKCON centers are meant to give relief to the dried up conditioned souls who are searching after the nectar of joyful life. Letter to Bhagavan, December 18, 1970.

Srila Prabhupada’s Divine Lotus Feet (Album with photos) by Padmapani Das.
“The dust of the feet of a devotee, the water that has washed the feet of a devotee, and the remnants of food left by a devotee are three very powerful substances. By rendering service to these three, one attains the supreme goal of ecstatic love for Krishna. In all the revealed scriptures this is loudly declared again and again. Therefore, my dear devotees, please hear from me, for I insist again and again: please keep faith in these three and render service to them without hesitation. From these three one achieves the highest goal of life – ecstatic love of Krishna. This is the greatest mercy of Lord Krishna.” (Caitanya-caritamrita, Antya-lila 16.60-63)

Hare KrishnaBy Damodara Dasa

ISKCON turns 50 today. And I would like to acknowledge that significant milestone by expressing my gratitude towards this "framework" established by Srila Prabhupada, without which, I and millions of others would not have had access to Krsna consciousness. That ISKCON, an organisation operating within the material world (but, according to Srila Prabhupada, not exclusively - there is a Goloka/Navadvip branch) to have faults should not be a surprise, nor a legitimate basis for withdrawing one's support, participation or appreciation. Just as a material body - even one inhabited by a sincere devotee - is not immune to pathogens or disease, an organisational vehicle operating within the material world, is susceptible to all of the issues that can plague any organisation. For us to become disillusioned or cynical because of these very real challenges suggests a naive idealism or perhaps a "consumer/enjoying mentality." ISKCON is a gift bequeathed to us by Srila Prabhupada - a framework for associating and cooperating with other devotees in pursuance of offering Lord Caitanya's benediction to the masses. Should we be surprised or dismayed that there are some very real challenges in operating such a Society at this current time (Kali Yuga) and in dealing with the exponential growth which continues to typify ISKCON throughout the world, dealing with matters for which we have had precious little training or historical precedents? Netherlands Introduces ‘Bhagavad-gita’ To 5th Graders.
Schools are arguably the most effective means of enacting the aims of integration. Texts/passages from scriptures such as the 'Bhagavad Gita’ and 'Upanishads’ have caught the imagination of primary education system in the Netherlands. Many 'sayings and teachings’ from such spiritual Hindu scriptures are incorporated now in the Netherlands Schools system with the aim of making world education compulsory starting from 5th grade onwards.

The Russian church is appalled by this new law. Russian President Vladimir Putin signed into law last week a measure punishing any kind of religious evangelization outside of churches, which some observers have called one of the most restrictive move in "post-Soviet history." "This new situation resembles the Soviet Union in 1929. At that time confession of faith was permitted only in church," Hannu Haukka, president of Great Commission Media Ministries, told National Religious Broadcasters, according to Breitbart News. "Practically speaking, we are back in the same situation. These anti-terrorist laws are some of the most restrictive laws in post-Soviet history." 50 Years Of Krishna CONSCIOUSNESS

Hare KrishnaBy Reena Singh

Turning fifty this year, the International Society for Krishna consciousness (Iskcon) started by the then 70-year-old Swami Prabhupada has lost none of its youthful vim and vigour. Swamiji made his way to the US from West Bengal to spread the message of Sri Krishna in the western world. He reached there in 1965 and a year later, established the first temple of Iskcon at New York. Soon after, he sent off three couples to the UK who, like wandering minstrels, would sing the Hare Krishna mantra, in their famous kirtana style. They were walking down Soho when they bumped into Beatles George Harrison and John Lennon. Harrison accosted them: “Hare Krishna, where have you been? I have been waiting to meet you.” Continue reading "50 Years Of Krishna CONSCIOUSNESS

50 years of ISKCON – the joy of devotion

Hare KrishnaBy Romapada Das

Over fifty years ago in September 1965, an elderly Indian monk stepped off the piers of New York harbour wearing orange Indian robes and sporting a dignified vaishnava tilak mark on his forehead. He was carrying just seven dollars, a few sets of clothes and two trunk-loads of books. The aristocratic looking monk was A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, who had been sent by his spiritual master from India to preach the message of the Bhagavad-gita to the western world. In just ten short years, Srila Prabhupada, who came to America almost penniless, established a worldwide community of devotees practising India’s ancient science of bhakti-yoga, wrote 75 books, and established over 108 centres across five continents, that made ‘Hare Krishna’ a household name all over the globe. July 13. ISKCON 50 – S.Prabhupada Daily Meditations.
Satsvarupa dasa Goswami: Don Drifting Away.
Don was a test of Swamiji’s tolerance. He had lived in the storefront for months, working little and not trying to change his habits. He had a remarkable speech affectation: instead of talking, he enunciated his words, as if he were reciting from a book. And he never used contractions. It wasn’t that he was intellectual, just that he had somehow developed a plan to abolish his natural dialect. Don’s speech struck people as bizarre, like it might be the result of too many drugs. It gave him the air of not being an ordinary being. And he continually took marijuana, even after Swamiji had asked those who lived with him not to. Sometimes during the day his girlfriend would join him in the storefront, and they would sit together talking intimately and sometimes kissing. But he liked the Swami. He even gave him money once. He liked living in the storefront, and Swamiji didn’t complain.
But others did. One day an interested newcomer dropped by the storefront and found Don alone, surrounded by the sharp aroma of marijuana. “You been smoking pot? But the Swami doesn’t want anyone smoking here.” Don denied it: “I have not been smoking. You are not speaking the truth.” The boy then reached in Don’s shirt pocket and pulled out a joint, and Don hit him in the face. Several of the boys found out. They weren’t sure what was right: What would the Swami do? What do you do if someone smokes pot? Even though a devotee was not supposed to, could it be allowed sometimes? They put the matter before Swamiji.
Prabhupada took it very seriously, and he was upset, especially about the violence. “He hit you?” he asked the boy. “I will go down myself and kick him in the head.” But then Prabhupada thought about it and said that Don should be asked to leave. But Don had already left.
The next morning during Swamiji’s class, Don appeared at the front door. From his dais, Swamiji looked out at Don with great concern. But his first concern was for ISKCON: “Ask him,” Prabhupada requested Roy, who sat nearby. “If he has marijuana – then he cannot come in. Our society …” Prabhupada was like an anxious father, afraid for the life of his infant ISKCON. Roy went to the door and told Don he would have to give up his drugs if he entered. And Don walked away.

Lip service!
→ KKSBlog

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, 03 April 2016, Durban, South Africa, Sunday Lecture at NJP)
Lord_Caitanya
Caitanya Caritamrta Madhya Lila chapter 19 is a chapter dedicated to the biography of Rupa Goswami and how he receives instructions from Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. What it begins with and which is interesting, is ‘lip service’. The term ‘lip service’ is found there. It is said that 500 years ago, most devotees, upon hearing transcendental instruction, were rendering only lip service. I kind of like that! I thought it was really something because that was 500 years ago and we thought that things were still very pure and had not become watered down as it is now. But even then, it was mainly lip service.
So what are we doing now and how do we make the change? How do we rise above the weakness of the heart? The last purport of the 15th chapter deals with weakness of the heart. First of all, it is said that weakness of the heart consists of philosophical misconceptions. When there is philosophical misconception, then there must be weakness of the heart.
Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur gives us a more elaborate explanation. He explains that another cause of lethargy is ignorance. So we must hear somehow or other. But we must make the effort, we have to push the button to listen to the recording, or drag the body to a lecture, or open the book to read. That much we have to do. We have to take some initiative even when it feels difficult because then we can overcome the weakness of the heart.
Another cause of weakness of heart is simply aparadha, making offenses. We are careless – we are disrespectful to the Lord, to the devotees and to the holy name. Various anarthas (impurities) are in our hearts, anarthas such as desiring to be worshiped or hankering for name, fame and glory; pretending to be better than we are; pretending to be greater than we are. But this is a business mentality. It means we are trying to get more profit than we should therefore we misrepresent things for gain. Lying has become the standard because generally speaking, it looks better when we colour it with a lie. Thus we lie even when we do not have to because it is just a habit. All these things have now become part of our nature.

Farewell to the I & M

Our last day on the ‘I and M Canal State Trail’ had its own power.  There were images and impressions worth remembering.  The canal itself appeared and disappeared, that is, filled with still water or none at all.  Giant reeds were invasive, yet they provided shade.  A magnificent rock wall cut through like a gorge to our sight.

Uttamananda and I viewed the intensely cardinal-red colour of one bird.  During a chanting session we had, a song, in honour of the guru, I spotted two stellar blue birds that went in a flit and a flirt.  Solitary deer came out of thickets to feel the freedom enjoyed on the trail, but upon seeing us they would dash away timidly.

A plaque informed us that Wild Bill Hickok began his nefarious ways along the canal when he was a teen.

Beginning from the city of Ottawa, the trail seems unfrequented by pedestrians.  Of course that might be because we started trekking early.  By the time we got to where the trail cuts through Utica and La Salle, the presence of people picked up.

“Hey, that was you on TV wasn’t it?” asked one elderly man who stopped and dismounted his bike.

Fishermen and fisherwomen began to dot the edge of the canal, some successfully reeling in fish, mostly bass.

Kamlesh, a 59 year old, successful Gujarati businessman in the area decided to join us and even arranged rooms for our night-time stay at the Tow-Rest Motel.  But, before sleep, I was invited to the proprietors’ home for kirtan and a message from the Gita, chapter 8, verse 6, about preparation for positive thoughts at the moment of death.  This is what we dwelt on.

It was a glorious day, but I’m sad to see the trail leave us.

May the Source be with you!

The Persons on Either Side

My days of duty are done.  This means the visitations to two devotional communities in British Columbia, to provide encouragement, are now terminated and I’m going back to the road in America.  The flight to Chicago was the dream-time for the return to the Illinois and Michigan Canal State Trail.  I had a person on either side of me on the plane, reminding me of my duty and place.

First of all a young Austrailian chap did a browse on his iPhone.  I caught a glance of a picture of himself with soccer teamsters.  From this glance I knew he was an athlete-of-sorts so, when it came time for him to excuse himself to use the facilities, I suggested, “You’re a sportsman. Why not climb over me?”  I witnessed this act, performed by another athlete, a tri-marathoner from New Zealand.  At that time he was in the window seat when he leapt over me with ease.

Of course, Pat, the middle-aged, sweet lady had to step out into the aisle-- with grace.  Our soccer player could in no way leap over two of us.

Pat is from Davenport, Iowa, as she introduced herself.  The place of her residence struck a chord when she mentioned it.

“Davenport!  Oh yes!  That’s where I’ll be walking.  I’m doing this trek to San Francisco.”

A conversation ensued.  And when our soccer friend returned, he too was drawn to the details of the walking mission.

“20 miles.  Slowing down.  Getting more in touch with ourselves.  It’s a work-out, and a work-in!”

I felt like I had two more people rooting for me at the end of the conversation, as the plane descended and landed.

And then there was something I reminded myself of.

“Return the favour and root for the other person(s) as a reciprocation.”

All need encouragement!

May the Source be with you!

The inside job!
Sutapa das: The ungrateful, inappropriate and irrational ways in which people act can infuriate us to no end. We deal with our anger by letting it loose (passionate and vengeful outbursts) or locking it up (emotionally disconnecting). Both expressions, however, are indicative of our own shortcomings. Allowing someone else’s negativity to displace our own consciousness, means there is still work to do. We seek emotional deposits from others because we haven’t become full in ourselves. But isn’t that natural? Aren’t relationships based on mutual emotional dependency? Surely it’s reasonable and legitimate to expect some human decency in our social intercourse. Well, in one sense yes, but if you understand the nature of this world, the power of material psychology and the inherent weakness of each individual, then you won’t be surprised when people aren’t so forthcoming. Only when we are internally nourished and solidly connected to the original spiritual source, can we wholeheartedly give ourselves and remain unaffected by the reciprocation (or lack of) that we receive.

Is God a Person or Energy?
→ Dandavats

Hare KrishnaBy Sri Krishna

I know that Supreme Personality of Godhead who is transcendental to all material conceptions of darkness. Only he who knows Him can transcend the bonds of birth and death. There is no way for liberation other than this knowledge of that Supreme Person.“There is no truth superior to that Supreme Person because He is the supermost. He is smaller than the smallest, and He is greater than the greatest. He is situated as a silent tree, and He illumines the transcendental sky, and as a tree spreads its roots, He spreads His extensive energies.”From these verses one concludes that the Supreme Absolute Truth is the Supreme Personality of Godhead who is all-pervading by His multi-energies, both material and spiritual.
