Jaya Radha Madhava.
i was blessed to be with Srila Prabhupad when He went to Hanuman Prasad Poddar’s ashram in Gorakhpur… that was the place where Jaya Radha Madhava was first introduced… one morning Srila Prabhupad asked me to bring him Srila Bhaktivinode Thakur’s songbook… He looked through it and said “Oh this is a nice prayer” and sang it before Srimad Bhagavatam class… the rest is history… He sang it before every class afterwards… i sent the words to Jayatirtha Prabhu in LA, but not knowing how to write music, was unable to convey the correct tune… some of the old recordings have a made up tune that Srila Prabhupad corrected when He got back to the west… He was very adamant about chanting the tunes He had taught us and not making anything up… just like the philosophy - Nanda Kumar dasa ACBSP

His Holiness Prahladananda Swami Speaks About the TOVP
- TOVP.org

His Holiness Prahladananda Swami explains Srila Prabhupada’s vision of spreading Krishna consciousness all over the world through a cultural conquest. The TOVP represents this conquest through an architectural angle, amongst others, and the TOVP is a fitting monument for that purpose.

Huge Harinama during the Kingsday Festival 2015 in Holland. (Well written descrption and album with 291 photos)
As the harinam was approaching the bridge, Maharaj’s kirtan was going full pelt; the drumming, the mrdanga, the harmonium and the electric guitar, everything was to the max! But as soon we went under the bridge… oh my Lord Krsna, it was all over – social conventions obliterated, inhibitions laid to waste and caution was well and truly thrown to the wind. The acoustics underneath this bridge were on a whole new level and the place was absolutely heaving with people and every single one of them completely lost it, completely immersed in the intensity of the kirtan that Maharaj was delivering with some divinely ordained raw, spiritual power. Devotees or locals, it didn’t matter, everyone was in it together, dancing in unison, faces with looks of complete ecstasy. One moment everyone was going to and fro like a shoal of fish in the water, the next moment, everyone had grouped into human chains and arches and going in and out of each other; and the next moment everyone was going round and round in a whirlpool of sheer joy.

Transcendent Godhead
→ The Enquirer

The Guardians of the Directions said, “You see everything in the world, but our worldly senses cannot see you. They see only our own delusions. You can be seen, but only when we observe you directly, soul to soul, without interference from external senses. When we look at you with our deluded senses you seem to be among the five material elements, but in fact you are the sixth – beyond the five elements, the true possessor of them all.”

The Yoga Masters said, “Prabhu, no one is more beloved to you than a person who sees no differences between all the creatures in the world. And even more, tender Lord, your affection increases without limit for those who hearts run to you.

“Creatures seem to be different because their infatuation with your external qualities causes them to identify with all the different circumstances they are put into by destiny’s creations, manifestations, and destructions. We pay our respects to the rare soul who relinquishes infatuation with your external qualities, ceases to identify with external situations, and becomes situated in self-realization.”

The Veda said, “We pay respect to you, the origin of reality and source of all its fundamental qualities. Neither I nor anyone else truly comprehends your indescribable extents.”

Agni, Sacred Fire, said, “My ability to burn ignites from your ability to shine. In a proper sacrifice, I can accept five kinds of offerings with ghee, and five mantras. But you are the true recipient of the offering, and true objective of the sacrifice. I offer my respect to you.”

Reflection Of The Holy Name
→ Japa Group

If one can come to the platform of chanting namabhasa, the reflection of the holy name, strong eagerness to chant purely gradually awakens. It is an important aspect of chanting japa to cultivate this desire to some day attain suddha-nama.

This desire comes by sadhu-sanga, by hearing realized devotees glorifying the holy name and by chanting in itself. There is nothing more glorious in the whole existence than the holy name of Krsna, the glories of the Holy name are like an unlimited, ever expanding ocean.

A Sadhu Tolerates Despite Opposition, May 3, New Dwaraka, Los Angeles
Giriraj Swami

2015-05-03-LA“During the kirtan my mind was preoccupied—I was disappointed after a long day in Bombay without success. Then Srila Prabhupada  looked at me and said. ‘You should dance in the kirtan even if we don’t get the no-objection.’ So, these things go on—and what to do? We have to tolerate. And not just tolerate but—shanta—we should be peaceful. We have to be able to think of Krishna—not be so disturbed by these problems that we forget Krishna. We shouldn’t fail to be absorbed in hearing and chanting about Krishna which is our core practice.”

Harinama in Moscow, Russia
Srila Prabhupada: By chanting Hare Krishna one fixes his mind always on the Supreme Lord. One example often given is that of the caterpillar that thinks of becoming a butterfly and so is transformed into a butterfly in the same life. Similarly, if we constantly think of Krishna, it is certain that at the end of our lives we shall have the same bodily constitution as Krishna. (Bhagavad-gita, 8.8 Purport)

Spreading the mercy

By most accounts, Belgium is a pretty unassuming country in terms of vibrancy, history or scenic beauty; it would not rank highly with its more glamorous European neighbours such as France, Italy or Germany! And yet, this flat country has something rather special, there is the beautiful Ardennes Valley and nestled in this valley is the transcendental, holy abode of their Lordships Sri Sri Radha Gopinath who are living very nicely in an exquisite 19th century chateau known as Radhadesh.

Every year at this time, something incredible happens in Radhadesh – Kadamba Kanana Swami celebrates his birthday. Each year, it seems that these transcendental parties just seem to be getting bigger and better! Around 300 devotees from far flung corners and not so far corners of the world, converge on this chateau to glorify, appreciate, learn from and simply enjoy Maharaj’s wonderful association.

It was a jam packed four days that Maharaj’s well-wishers and disciples spent in Radhadesh but the piece de resistance of the celebrations did not even take place in Radhadesh but in neighbouring Holland, the land of windmills, dykes and of course Maharaj’s birth place. One is of course speaking of the famous maha harinam of Amsterdam.

kingsday 2015 (2) 2015 (22)

The event took place on a beautiful, sunny Sunday on the 26th of April. Previously, until 2012, it coincided with the national Queensday public holiday (29 April) but now that the Netherlands has a King in power, the public holiday is now Kingsday. It is not a name change that Maharaj has readily welcomed but what to do!? Maharaj remarked, “We have been doing harinam for years on Queensday and suddenly, it is now Kingsday! It doesn’t quite roll off the tongue so easily!”

Nonetheless, what a harinam it was! Even if one used the most expressive adjectives and superlatives to describe this harinam, still it would not do justice to what is arguably one of the most entertaining, wildest, craziest annual harinams in Iskcon. But more of that later…

Maharaj and the 300 devotees who were part of the group, set off from Radhadesh at 5am. The air was crisp but fresh and the sense of eagerness was high. Instinctively and psychologically, the devotees were gearing up for what they knew was going to be a spiritually ecstatic extravaganza in the heart of one of the most decadent and worldly cities on the planet. Maharaj and a few devotees traveled by car, kindly driven by Bhakta Michael from England, whilst the rest of the party went in two double-decker coaches. Even the early morning coach ride had a lively, warm energy about it, as devotees were engaged in various conversations, exchanging realizations, sharing cheesy jokes and talking about the day ahead. Nice prasadam snacks were provided including some peculiar looking, red colored crisps from the Czech Republic!!

As the journey progressed, the terrain was getting flatter, wetter and the local dialect started changing from the Belgian-French drawl to the drier, guttural Dutch. Soon enough, the typically European cityscape of Amsterdam unfolded upon us and before we knew it, we were in the city center, in front of the Amsterdam temple. The 2015 Kingsday Harinam was about to commence!

As devotees poured out of the coaches, Maharaj was gearing up in the temple. Food for Life impresario, Parashuram Prabhu from England, met us in Amsterdam with his dedicated band of fired up men accompanied by electric guitar, ukulele, bike cart and full on drum kit, all in tow!  Now the anticipation was palpable…

DSC_0081 2015 (14)

After a few moments, a senior devotee from Czech, Vidyavachaspati Prabhu, kicked off the harinam. There was no messing about so to speak, as he got straight into it with a full sized harmonium strapped across his shoulder which he was playing like Duke Ellington on the piano and a rasping, jazz voice to boot. The effect was stunning. Vidyavachaspati Prabhu sang classic Western style Iskcon melodies that were fired up from the start, perfect for the harinam. And the kirtans had an incredible energy from the word go, he started in 5th gear and was just going higher and higher. At the end of each maha mantra, he would finish off with a deep, resonant, groan that simply added to the jazziness and the passion which he bought to the kirtan. The devotees really got into the mood as well, spontaneously breaking into synchronized dance sequences and jumping up and down like excited jack rabbits. Whilst this was going on, the harinam procession proceeded from the local temple, going further into the city center crisscrossing  the famous ‘plaats’ and ‘straats’ as well as the ubiquitous canals of this famous city.

kingsday 2015 (19) 2015 (10)

After some time, the moment we were all waiting for arrived! Kadamba Kanana Swami took over the microphone and started to led the kirtan. Although Maharaj is often perceived as an ‘explosive’ kirtaneer (somewhat to Maharaj’s chagrin), this time he took a different approach, going for the chilled, mellow vibe. The dancing also took on a less manic and more rhythmic mood, with the devotees bopping along gracefully, almost relaxingly to the lilting kirtan. By Krsna’s will, the sweet kirtan corresponded nicely with the canals and picturesque buildings that we were walking past. But, let us remember that this is a maha harinam with Kadamba Kanana Swami at the helm and a public Kadamba Kanana Swami kirtan can only stay sweet and chilled for so long! Gradually Maharaj started building, upping the tempo and upping the energy! Sparks started flying and the fire was building, like Mount Vesuvius getting ready to erupt. The electric guitar riffs were becoming more prominent, the drumming was becoming more powerful, more stylized and the bass was getting really heavy and deep. Maharaj also segued the groove into a more intense, funky tempo three to four times in the space of fifteen minutes, rapidly upping the ante. The dancing got wilder, the singing intense and some truly intricate dance sequences and patterns started coming out, complete with jack rabbit style jumping going on!

kingsday 2015 (43) kingsday 2015 (37)

The 2015 Kingsday harinam had well and truly arrived. But the peak of this particular kirtan had not even come yet. The procession soon came into a park, there the devotees let everything go, all inhibitions out of the window, no more holding back – full freedom, full shelter of the kirtan and as a result the local people also started getting into the kirtan with full on gusto. Never mind that a lot of them were drunk or high on something or other, now they were experiencing the real high – the transcendental high of a crazy Krsna conscious kirtan. Then came the crescendo. Just after the park was the huge, grand arch of the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum. Suffice to say, the acoustics underneath the arch were ‘off the hook’ and it had one heck of an echo! So while Maharaj was carrying the kirtan to ever greater heights, it seemed as if the climax was timed perfectly for when the procession went under the arch. As mentioned before, words cannot describe the effect of the kirtan under the arch. It is said that when the Pandavas blew their conches in the Kurukshetra war, due to a past benediction, Hanuman also gave his roar to the power of the conches blown. It seemed as if Hanuman was also contributing his roar and power to our kirtan at that point, along with the vocal contributions of a whole host of angels, gandharvas, etc. The effect was like being in the spiritual world. One could imagine looking up to the ceiling of the arch, whilst Maharaj’s rich voice was booming, seeing Krsna’s face looking and smiling down lovingly upon us. Absolute euphoria!

The kirtan continued through the city with various devotees taking over at different points. At one point, there were a group of African drummers rocking it in the city square. Naturally, our kirtan party had to do a little jamming session with them. The effect was brilliant; a beautiful fusion of transcendental sound vibrations with earthy, tribal beats. As the day progressed, the weather was getting hotter, the streets were getting more crowded and the harinam seemed to be gathering more and more potency, momentum and more and more of the locals weren’t just joining in our kirtan but were literally diving in! They were literally possessed by the maha mantra and going crazy to the amazingly harmonized dance sequences that were being created.

2015 (2) 2015 (3)

Around 3pm, a delicious lunch of pasta in sweetcorn and cream sauce, crispy pakoras and a delightfully buttery halva was kindly provided by devotees and then the harinam resumed. Thereafter, Maharaj took over again, it was beautiful. And then we got to the bridge, yes, the famous bridge in Vondelpark! Veterans of Queensday harinams will be aware of this special bridge that they go under every year. Just when one thought nothing could have topped the effect of going under the Rijksmuseum arch, along comes this bridge, arguably the apex moment of the entire harinam. This whole seething mass of humanity was completely in line with the sounds of the kirtan and as the kirtan was gathering momentum, the crowd was too. In those moments, time had ceased to have any meaning, everyone was just completely in the moment. It didn’t matter who you were and what you did, all that mattered was the moment, being in the moment, being in the kirtan. Magnifique!

DSC_0173 DSC_0191

By the time the kirtan had come out of the park, the sky had become a deep, vibrant orange color signifying the setting of the sun. Srila Prabhupada disciple, Gaura Prabhu, finished off the day with a sweet, mellow kirtan. No doubt, at the end of the day there were blisters and aching feet but no one cared because everyone just had a taste of the spiritual world. On this fateful day, Maharaj and his disciples set some of the city of Amsterdam alight with some real Harinam Ruci and everyone went back to Radhadesh enlivened and fully confident that next year’s Kingsday harinam will be even bigger, better, more impactful and more transformative.

ECO-V Seeks Ox Care and Garden Managers in New Vrindaban
→ New Vrindaban Brijabasi Spirit

ECO-Vrindaban Logo

By Madhava Smullen

Two unique opportunities have arisen in New Vrindaban, West Virginia, USA.

ECO-Vrindaban, a non-profit organization that promotes Prabhupada’s ideals of simple living, cow protection, engaging oxen, local agriculture, and above all, loving Krishna, is searching for managers for its ox care and garden programs.

ECO-Vrindaban ISKCON New Vrindaban Cow Protection Oxen Bull

Young bull calf – Summer 2014.

Protection of cows and bulls, Prabhupada said, “should be the main business of New Vrindaban.” He taught early residents to respect the cow, who could provide milk for nourishment, as their mother; and the ox, who could pull a plow to till the land, as their father.

There has been a cow protection program at New Vrindaban since 1969. But as with most ISKCON rural communities, the ox training program has not been maintained consistently.

Two years ago, however, ECO-V made a concerted effort to revitalize it. Last year, a dilapidated barn in the Bahulaban area was completely rebuilt, and became a home for oxen.

Three teams of young Brown Swiss oxen – Ishan and Balarama, Priya Darshan and Harichand, and Nandi and Manu are currently at different stages of training with Richard and Chaitanya Bhagavata Das. The oldest now work with yokes, follow commands, and pull logs. The ultimate goal is for them to pull plows in the community’s vegetable gardens, as well as carts of pilgrims, all to demonstrate a simple lifestyle.

To help lead this program, ECO-V seeks an individual passionate about cow protection; physically able to work with oxen; and willing to live in New Vrindaban for this full-time salaried position.

Duties include handling logistics and budgets; being an educational resource for local cowherds; and coordinating ox training volunteer activities. The ideal candidate will be a great team builder and have management or leadership experience, preferably with a non-profit.

“This person will make an important contribution by overseeing the revival of one of Prabhupada’s key instructions for New Vrindaban,” says ECO-V board member Chaitanya Mangala Das.

ECO-V is also looking for a garden manager to develop local agriculture, another key part of Srila Prabhupada’s vision. “These duties are there in New Vrindaban, and we shall have to live there self independently, simply by raising cows, grains, fruits, and flowers,” he wrote in 1969.

There are currently two main community garden spaces in New Vrindaban. One is called the Teaching Garden, a half-acre plot where herbs and flowers for the Deities are grown; the other is the fenced in seven-acre Garden of Seven Gates. In previous years that space has grown sweet potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, green beans, snap peas, quinoa and much, much more.

The new garden manager can look forward to taking on a well-organized program – previous manager Kacey Orr, an experienced local farmer, cleaned up the grounds and facilities, erected hothouses, and established a system for planting perennial and annual vegetables and flowers. The gardens also have an irrigation system and all the tools and equipment required.

ISKCON New Vrindaban ECO-Vrindaban Teaching Garden

ISKCON New Vrindaban Teaching Garden – Summer 2014.

The new manager will be working closely with ISKCON New Vrindaban’s Deity, Devotee and Govinda’s Restaurant kitchen managers to supply them with fresh vegetables.

ECO-V is seeking someone experienced and knowledgeable in gardening, passionate about environmental and food production issues, and able to handle the physical work. Once again leadership experience is ideal, as is an ability to maintain positive relationships with community members and guests.

Also a full-time salaried position, duties include handling logistics and budgets, being an educational resource for local gardeners and coordinating volunteer activities.

“It’s a good time to be a part of the New Vrindaban community, because lately there’s been a lot of focus and energy given to revitalize the core instructions Prabhupada gave us,” says Chaitanya Mangala. “And this is a great opportunity to be part of a dynamic team.”

For those interested in either position, please send cover letter, resume and any other inquires to Mukunda Das: coachmarc108@gmail.com

Questions about Prabhupāda and ISKCON
→ The Enquirer

I recently answered a questionaire for a study about how modern people deal with some of the more socially challenging aspects of Prabhupāda’s books and, especially, how they are represented in ISKCON. I thought I might as well share my answers.

1. How and when did you encounter Vaishnavism for the first time?
Dad was carrying me on his shoulders, we were returning to our car. We were on a vacation to s.california, and went to laguna beach. On the way back to the  car we walked past the Hare Krishna temple, it was Sunday, late afternoon. It was the late 1970s maybe early 1980s. Chanting was pouring out of the temple and i was facinated. My mom said something like, “They are some weird cult.”
.
Later I got exposed to it again by learning (via Thrasher Magazine) that the Cro-Mags were into it. A little later Raghunath (Youth of Today) explained a few things to me about it.

.

2. What was your religious background and outlook toward religion/spirituality before encountering GV?
Catholic by culture but not a particularly theistic family, actually a very secular upbringing.
.
Were you seeking something spiritual?
Yes, my entire life, but not always in a typical way. I was attracted to outer space, dinosaurs, elves and middle earth, dungeons and dragons, etc all because I was not satisfied with having my mind in the here-and-now since the here-and-now seemed so shallow.

.

3. What was it that made you decide to be a devotee?
It was the introduction and opening verse of Prabhupāda’s Śrī Isopanishad translation. I was absolutely floored that spirituality could be logical, precise, and systematic.
.
4. What was your attitude toward sexism, racism, and homophobia prior to encountering Vaishnavism?
The same as my attitude after encountering Vaishnavism… I feel that these things are divisive, and therefore a parcel of hatred, which is an effect of ignorance.

.

5. When did you first encounter the disparaging ideas about women, people of African descent, and lesbians/gays?
I firs encountered racism when I was about 18 years old and our neighbor got furious with my dad for selling our house to a black family. I couldn’t believe my ears, the level of ignorance was mind-blowing.
.
I never really experienced hatred towards women and homosexuals. My aunt is homosexual, it wasn’t a big issue.
.
Did you find them in Prabhupada’s books, in conversations happening in and around the movement, or both?
The role that women played in ISKCON didn’t sit right with me. I thought there were statements in Prabhupada’s books that might be used to justify such a role, but it seemed clear to me that it was really the westerners actively usings those statements as excuses for their preconceptions or flaws.
.
I didn’t really ever feel any sense of racism in ISKCON. Homophobia? Maybe a little. I didn’t really encounter it.
.
What was your reaction upon encountering these ideas?
I mean, what do you expect? It’s only shocking so long as you are gullible enough to hope that anything existing in the world of ignorance can be absolutely perfect. We are a whole bunch of ignorant jerks. Our saving grace is that we are trying to improve. Nonethless we are still basically ignorant jerks. So what do you expect from us?
.
I was a little more shocked not to see the sexism, but to see the resistance even to any open discussion of it. That part makes you wonder if we are really trying to improve or what?
.
6. What was your view on the connection between the shastra and Prabhupada’s statements/purports?
Prabhupāda’s purports are his explanations of the śāstras, most of the time he relies very heavily on previous explanations by Śrī Jīva and Śrī Viśvanātha, which I think is very proper and admirable.
.
7. How did you deal with the tension, if any, between Prabhupada’s teachings on these issues and your own previously held beliefs? Did you actively try to explain it/reconcile it/justify it/etc, or did you just not address it?
I actively took a combative role against it. I even published a small pamphlet calling the sexism an anartha and calling for specific changes in the temple policies. I distributed it around the temples in the NE America.
.
Was your navigation of this tension, if any, solely internal, or did you try to take part in any actions in the community to address these issues?
See above. I also tried to support others who were trying to do something about it.
.
8. What eventually caused you to leave the Vaishnava world?
I didn’t.
.
I gave up my contact with ISKCON and so on, but that should hardly be deemed “leaving the Vaishnava world.” When a real relationship is established with Krishna, it is permanent and internal. I even gave up my sādhana for a while, but I don’t think even that should be considered “leaving the Vaishnava world.”
.

I think it was around 2001 that I gave up on sādhana for a while.

.

9. What led you back into Vaishnavism?
I became active in bhakti sādhana again because my friends Rasaraja and Trivikrama (from our band, 108) inspired me. They were great people without any of the things I disliked about ISKCON, and they were engaged in bhakti-sādhana, so this gave me a taste for it again. This was 2005.
.
10. How do you view women’s, racial, and sexual issues now? How do you view the relationship between your views and those in Prabhupada’s books/statements?
I’m not a part of the ISKCON social group anymore, at least not nearly in the same way as before. So I kind of feel like its not my problem.
.
My views and Prabhupāda’s statements are fine together, I don’t feel any unresolvable tension. But the way some people use Prabhupadas statement to justify their attitudes is just something I like to keep a healthy distance from.
.
11. If there is a tension in that relationship, how are you dealing with it?
I keep my distance from people who can’t or won’t engage in a logical, rational discussion about it.
.
I understand Prabhupada’s teaching in context. I think thats the key to having a sane, good understanding. “In context” means in context of who he was and what he was doing, and also in context of what he is trying to express, and how the same points were expressed by his own teachers. And most of all, in context to the direct Sanskrit scriptures themselves.
.
Prabhupāda gave us great access to the Sanskrit directly, and I think people who don’t get down to that level of reading his books are really only reading about half of what he has given. Everything starts to make a whole lot of sense when you take what Prabhupāda opened up to us and follow it all the way back through Śrī Viśvanātha, Śrī Jīva. Śrī Rūpa. Śrī Krishna dāsa, and into the ultimate origin, the original Bhāgavatam itself, and the rest of the Vedic body.
.
12. How do you now view the connection between Prabhupada’s statements and the content of the shastras?
He’s a guru, so he explains the shastra in terms of how its relevant to the people he is talking to, and also in terms of his specific individual personality a frames of reference.

→ Japa Group

Some time ago it was very hard for me to chant my Japa and I didn't know why. Then I realized that I was very critical with the devotees and with other people in general.
I realized I needed a minimum of humility to keep chanting or just to even chant. Then I thought how can I be humble? For me it's very difficult, so I came to the conclusion that the first step towards being humble is to accept that I am not humble, and I think this is giving me a little humility.

Your servant,

Krishna Vijay Das
