Let this album of Gurukula In Mayapura transport you to Satya-yuga! (Album 139 photos)
Indradyumna Swami Before leaving Sridham Mayapura I visited the Bhaktivedanta Academy, one of several schools in our ISKCON community there. It functions as a traditional Vedic gurukula with education for both boys and girls. The day I visited the boy’s school they were receiving one of their teacher’s, Bhaktividya Purna Maharaja, who was returning from a trip way. The boys cooked a feast, received Maharaja, held a fire yajna and had a big kirtan. The jungle setting, the traditional architecture and the well trained students all provided a unique experience.

Hare Krishna! Suvarna Vihara Temple At “Sri Godrumadvipa“ Island Of Navadvipa-mayapur Dhama
Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura established this Temple. One day, while taking his disciples on pilgrimage from Svananda Sukhada Kunj (Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura’s house) to Nrsimhapalli, Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura saw this tract of land and told his disciples to locate the owner as he wanted it. The owner was a little perplexed. He told the devotees, “Please inform Maharaj that I am more than happy to give this land to him, but it is wild jungle with tigers and jackals and no one dares to go there. I would prefer to give him some other cultivated land”. Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura insisted he wanted that land only and after securing it, sent his disciples to search the place. They came back and reported they had seen carved stones and raised areas where high walls had once stood. They also saw a huge celestial cobra with shining jewel on its head. It was protecting the ruins of a huge building. Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura then revealed that this place was the palace of King Survarna Sena, from the time of Satya-yuga”.

Hare Krishna! The Power of Chastity
Garuda Purana 1.142.19-29 tells the story of a Brahmin named Kaushik who lived in the city Pratishthanpur: Kaushik was afflicted with leprosy, but still his wife, Sandili, worshiped him like a god. She was very chaste and faithful to her husband. Even when he rebuked her, she never ceased to consider him her worshipable deity. One evening, Kaushik instructed his wife to take him to the house of a prostitute. Obeying his order, Sandili brought a quantity of money with her, and carrying her husband on her shoulders, set off.

Hare Krishna! The Story of Mandavya Muni
There was a celebrated brahmin named Mandavya who was determined on the spiritual path. Steady in truthfulness and austerity, he knew all the religious law. Mandavya was a mighty yogi capable of great asceticism. Beneath a tree at the entrance to his āśrama, he stood unmoving with upraised arms and observed a religious vow of silence. Much time passed, until one day, as the sage dutifully performed his penances, a band of thieves rushed into his āśrama carrying stolen valuables. Being followed closely by a large group of police, the frightened thieves quickly concealed their booty in the sage’s cottage and then hid themselves in the same spot, just as the heavily-armed policemen arrived there.

Not A Material Sound
→ Japa Group

[The maha-mantra] is not a material sound like the sounds we hear on a radio. It is a spiritual sound that comes from the spiritual world. Even in the material world we can release the sound from one place, and it can be heard thousands of miles away. A spiritual sound can be released from many trillions of miles away, and it can be heard, provided that one has a machine to capture it. That machine is bhagavat prema. Those who have developed love of Godhead can hear it.

Humility
→ KKSBlog

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, October 2014, Mayapur, India, Siksastakam Seminar: Verses 3&4, Part 2)

SP_seatedHumility is our main topic of the day. I was thinking that humility also includes other qualities. For example, humility includes forgiveness because if you cannot forgive then there is no question of being humble. Forgiveness comes because we do not consider ourselves so important. When we are very important, then we cannot forgive, “How could you do this to me! YOU did this to ME! I will never forgive you for this!” There is a false concept of the self in lack of forgiveness. So, I see forgiveness as a quality of humility.

I see generosity and being magnanimous, these kind of qualities, also in humility because again, one has to be able to put one’s own concerns in the second place, then you can be magnanimous otherwise one is all the time thinking about ME, and MY condition and MY needs… As long as we are concerned with our own comforts, then humility is very difficult!

Srila Prabhupada: The tapasya of chanting and glorifying the name, fame and attributes of the Lord is a very easy purifying process by which everyone can be happy. Therefore everyone who desires the ultimate cleansing of his heart must adopt this process. Other processes, such as karma, jnana and yoga, cannot cleanse the heart absolutely. Coming Back Soon
→ Tattva - See inside out

After a month in India, my spiritual vacation is coming to a close. Vrindavana is beautiful, endearing, and we wish we could stay longer and longer. Living here for even a few weeks makes the rest of the world seem like a distant reality. It’s a place where spirituality is naturally woven into the fabric of daily life. Admittedly, however, there were times when I didn’t feel so holy in these sacred surroundings. I wished every day to be a magical experience and amazing revelation, but some days just weren’t. Yet the soul-searching, introspection and awareness of my spiritual deficiencies on those days was rewarding in its own way. As with every spiritual trip, I’m sure I’ll only fully appreciate the extent of these divine gifts once I leave and reflect back on the experience. I hope these sacred impressions will remain etched within the heart, nourishing my enthusiasm for many years to come.

Srila Prabhupada called Vrindavana his home. He lived here for many years in a humble temple which he identified as the “hub of the wheel of the spiritual world”. It’s hard to imagine how, from a remote village so seemingly disconnected from the urban matrix, he singlehandedly masterminded a spiritual revolution which continues to impact mainstream society today. In 1965, he left India as an ambassador of Vrindavana, intent on inviting the whole world back to this most special place. He wanted everyone to experience the magic of Krishna. His unforgettable sacrifice is an unending source of inspiration, and thus we can only hope to do something to assist the realisation of his dream.

This time has been humbling, but simultaneously encouraging. I’m feeling fallen but hopeful. I am becoming more aware of my obstacles, but the ultimate goal is slowly capturing my imagination. I’ve spoken to, observed and heard about the saints, now I’m challenged to renounce my pride, develop that spotless character and follow in their footsteps. I’ve heard hours of insightful lectures and read pages of profound philosophy, now I’m challenged to develop the simplicity and unpretentiousness required to realise that transcendental information. Gratitude for my elders, who performed unthinkable austerities to give us access to such spiritual treasures, has risen to new heights. Now I’m challenged to ‘up the game’ and sacrifice my own easy life to reciprocate with them.

I hope I’ll be granted entrance here again. I hope I’ll come back with a better character. I hope I’ll have some useful report for Srila Prabhupada next time, who may well ask – “what did you do to remind the world about Vrindavana, the eternal home of Krishna?”

By Goloka-ranjana Dasa
Among scholars, the position of women in the Vedic culture is a cause for controversy and debate because of different, sometimes contradictory statements found in Vedic literature. Sages have their own opinions and often contradict other sages. Thus the only path to the truth is the path traversed by great authorities. That is why we would like to analyze through the teachings of Srila Prabhupada and our previous acaryas some of the different quotes and arguments presented in the paper “Some Evidence Regarding Education and Guruship for Vaishnavis,”

Srila Prabhupada: Svalpam apy asya dharmasya trayate mahato bhayat: even a little devotional service can save one from the greatest danger. Devotional service, which begins with chanting of the holy name of the Lord, is so powerful that even if one falls down, he can be saved from all calamities if he somehow or other chants the holy name of the Lord. This is the extraordinary power of the Lord’s holy name. (Srimad-Bhagavatam, 6.1.63 Purport).

Is God Sadistic?
→ The Enquirer

Is Krishna sadistic and narcissistic?

Sadistic means “to enjoy causing pain.” It may seem that God is sadistic:

a) God is all-powerful, nothing can exist against his will.

b) Pain exists

c) Therefore God must want pain to exist. He is sadistic.

Statement A, however, is flawed.

Being all-powerful doesn’t mean you are the only one with any power. It doesn’t mean you won’t respect the power of others. “All-powerful” does not mean “absolute-maniacal-dictator.” “All-powerful” means śaktimān: all energies are rooted in him. All freewill and all power comes from him. It is not that only God is free and conscious, but everyone and everything else is an insentient puppet. Many, many entities exist with freewill and power (tat tvam asi). From the One Complete Will, many complete wills emanate (pūrnaṁ adaḥ pūrṇaṁ idam).

Therefore not everything that exists is a direct result of God’s will, some things are a result of my will, your will, his will, her will, etc. Pain is not directly manifest from God. It exists as a result of other willpowers.

Narcissistic: Complaints About God’s Ingenuity

We could complain, “why did he create a situation in which pain is even possible?”

Basically it is because there is no meaning to pleasure unless there is also a possibility of pain.

Here comes the complaint of narcissism: “So for the sake of pleasure, he allows pain to exist? How narcissistic!”

It’s not narcissistic (self-serving, self-engrossed). His intention is to share pleasure, not to horde it.

The One Being expands into many beings for the sake of expanding ānanda (so’kāmayta bahu syāt). That ānanda is the ultimate purpose of existence itself (ānanda-mayābhyāsāt) Ānanda is perceived as love, just as spatial dimensions are perceived as sound, wind is perceived as movement, and light is perceived as vision. Bhakti (love) is the tan-matra(perceivable essence) of ānanda (bliss).

So, the purpose of existence, the reason why the one becomes many, is to share and amplify the bliss of love. If we understand what love is, we will understand why freewill and pain exist.

The core of love is is anukūlyatā – an emotion of being “favorably inclined” towards the beloved. An angle cannot be measured with only two points, there must be three. One point, at the center, is the will of the individual existence (you or I). Another point – to the right of center, let’s say – is the self integrated in the Original Being. The third point – to the left of the center – is a the self separate from the Original Being. With these three points we can measure an angle of inclination, with the ray of will emanating from the center of the line.

Love-is-Will

Thus there must be an option for the will to divorce itself from the Original Being rather than integrate with it. If there is no such option, the anykūlyatā that is the core of love, cannot express itself. So we have the option to separate from the Original Being and exist on our own.

If we want to take this option, however, we run into a problem, engrained in the fundamentals of geometry itself.

Infinite existence is a circle (an infinite shape without sides or corners or beginning/end points). The root of the circle is the center-point. Circles have only one center point. So, if we want to exist without centering on that point, how will it be possible at all?

God has a powerful śakti called māyā which allows reality to be perceived subjectively, according to preferences of the individual will. Those inclined to separate from the Origin come under the wing of Māyā, and experience existence as if there were more than one center, or as if they themselves were the center.

A problem still exists. Again its in the fundamental architecture of geometry. Points within a center that subjectively imagine themselves central will inevitably come into conflict with one another. This conflict is experienced as “pain.”

We could file a complaint to God: “Change geometry!” But why should he? Geometry is working wondrously well for infinite zillions of individual wills experiencing ever-amplifying bliss by inclining themselves towards the real center. How would it be fair for him to change this situation?

“Change it just for us!” To an extent, he already did. That’s what māyā is. It permits geometry to be circumvented. But the side-effect of this circumvention plays an important role in bringing the divorced will eventually into a situation of true joy. More about this in a moment.

We could modify our complaint: “Change us! Stop us from conflicting.” He tries. He helps by establishing ethics and moral principles, and by his avatāra demonstrating the actual joy available in an existence centered correctly on the Original Being. But to actually stop us from generating pain would require him to force us into certain positions, defeating the purpose of creating individual wills, and horribly disrespecting our essence. This is the one thing that you must do. This is the “rock God created, to heavy to lift.” You must willingly embrace the concept of self integrated with his center. He cannot force it upon you.

Individual wills are inherently free to change their position, their vantage point, their center. Those not centered on the original being often come into conflict with one another, trying to occupy the same space, or control the same perimeter simultaneously. This causes the experience of pain.

Pain is a waste-product of love. But excrement and evacuation is also crucial to health. It is not that pain is without purpose. As the individual wills experience first-hand the pain incurred by conflicting with other centers, they began to want an answer, a solution. They start to avail of ethics and morality (dharma), and eventually seek their original root (mokṣa) and attain the perfect bliss within the Original Circle (prema).

Thus pain eventually leads us to incline away from a divorced conception of self, towards a conception of self fully integrated with the Original Whole.

I believe this demonstrates that God is neither sadistic nor narcissistic.

Remember Namacharya Thakura Haridasa and pray for his mercy. Pray to the holy name to help you chant with full attention, purely, and free from offenses.

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, October 2014, Vrindavan, India, Lecture at Ter Kadamba)

sp initiationThere was Hans Keilman. He was travelling in India and somehow he came to the Bombay Temple. While the devotees were talking to him, they found out that he was an architect. They brought him before Prabhupada, and said, “Prabhupada, this is Hans from Holland and he is an architect.”

Prabhupada asked, “Can you draw a temple?”

He described what he wanted – it was the Krsna Balaram Temple in Vrindavan. Hans started working on it. Prabhupada liked it and then said, “Tomorrow there will be initiations. I want to invite you.”

Hans asked, “Who will be initiated?”

Prabhupada said, “You!”

It happened that way. He just got kidnapped! So that was amazing!

Srila Prabhupada would endear himself to people, overpower them and bring them close, and once they were close, he would challenge them in so many ways!

Back in 1973, George Harrison of the famous popular music group, The Beatles, purchased a large house in the Hertfordshire countryside, and gave it to a small group of devotees of Krishna.

45 years later it has become a well known centre for learning, worship and celebration – a sanctuary for the soul.

Here is a new film, told mainly by visitors and friends of the Manor:
