Taking shelter
→ Servant of the Servant

When we have difficulties in life, severe or mild, we are trained by our predecessor teachers or acharyas or saintly people to take shelter of Krishna in humility. Because when we experience anxiety, depression or other negative emotions like anger, self-pity etc, it is very difficult to control the mind on our own. Therefore taking shelter of Krishna in humility during these difficult times, as devotees, will help us solve our problem and take us closer to Krishna.

Shelter in humility means to give up our attachment to the result of our negative experience and simply accept the result of the negative event as an award from Krishna. We may not like the result given to us, we may feel unfairly treated, we may harbor anger and or hate but still if somehow we  tolerate the outcome and accept all of it as the hand of God and take shelter of Him in humility, then the same bad experience will act as an incident in our life in cleaning our dirty heart and because of the cleaning we will actually feel relief followed by a sense of happiness followed by stronger faith upon Krishna. This is how we get closer to God.

So what is the heart actually cleansed of or what is really dirty in our heart?- It is our attachment as the cause (or doer) of activities in this world and our identity with this reality.  As a result of this attachment we either rejoice or revel in sadness.

As this false sense of identity and doer of activity is cleaned, we will experience more and more joy ultimately bringing us to the platform of Brahman or pure consciousness. From this anti-material platform...one can never forget God Krishna or service to God. Unconditional and uninterrupted service and bhakti begins from here.

So let us try our best in moments of despair to take shelter of Krishna with whatever humility is at our disposal and pray that the Lord protects us from the external problems and also our internal negative mind. Krishna says in the Gita 6.7 for one who has conquered the mind, the supersoul is already reached.

New Vrindaban’s 3rd Festival of Colors Draws Media and 5,000 People
→ New Vrindaban

Thousands of people chanting, dancing and, of course, throwing colors - for peace, love and unity!

New Vrindaban’s third annualFestival of Colors brought out 5,000 participants to “color their lives and throw their worries to the wind!” This was the message that hit home with most all of the festival goers that day.   Everyone had the time of their lives.

“As you can see, the Festival of Colors in Moundsville today was a complete success!”  This was the declaration made by Sarafina Brooks, a reporter from the local TV Channel, WTOV 9 who appeared on TV Sat. Sept. 13, 2014 covered from head to toe in green powdered chalk.  It’s clear that the local image of New Vrindaban is changing to one of peace, love and unity.

One young man who was there for his very first Festival of Colors was excited to say, “When we threw the colors up in the air, it was just like standing in the middle of a rainbow!”  Every half hour there was a wild color throw, accompanied by live music from one of five bands who played continuously throughout the day. The bands enthusiastically engaged thousands of people present in chanting the Holy Name, dancing, and throwing colors.   People also got to enjoy delectable vegetarian food known as “prasadam”, including New Vrindaban home grown, home cooked sweet potato fries and other delights.  Over 100 Krsna conscious books were sold to eager buyers.

This Festival of Colors was featured on the front page of a prominent local newspaper.  There was huge media coverage, with WTRF Channel 7, WTOV Channel 9, WV Public Radio, and three other newspapers.  Two of the TV channels even came before the Festival to do previews.  This type of coverage was unprecedented in all of New Vrindaban’s Festivals of Color to date.  Channel 7 announced, “ There might have been mostly gray skies over most of the Ohio Valley Saturday, but  there were rainbows over the Palace of Gold in Marshall County.“

Many of the guests also took tours of Prabhupada’s Palace of Gold and the Rose Gardens, wanting to know more about the beautiful and transcendental tourist attraction surrounding them.  Some bikers attended for their first time and one of them said, “This really isn’t a biker thing, but it’s a blast!  It’s all about love.  It’s a good time. Just hanging out with the people and nobody being mad.  You couldn’t do this with a bunch of bikers!”

Vrindavana das, organizer of the Festival commented, “This year it was more than just a good time.  This Ohio Valley has so many good people and they are feeling like this is becoming their festival.  People from all backgrounds are promoting love, friendship and unity.  They’re celebrating life together!  What could be better?”

One should not artificially try to see the form of the Lord while chanting Hare Krishna, but when the chanting is performed offenselessly the Lord will automatically reveal Himself to the view of the chanter. The chanter, therefore, has to concentrate on hearing the vibration, and without extra endeavor on his part, the Lord will automatically appear. (Srimad Bhagavatam, 4.8.53 Purport) Read more ›

ECO-Vrindaban Board Meeting Minutes 08/31/2014

Mission Statement: ECO-Vrindaban promotes a simple, sustainable lifestyle centered on the care and protection of cows, local food production and the loving service of Lord Krishna, as envisioned by Srila Prabhupada, the Founder-Acharya of ISKCON New Vrindaban.

Participating Members of the ECOV Board of Directors: Anuttama (partial attendance), Bhima, Chaitanya Mangala, Navin Shyam and Ranaka.

Recording secretary: Jordanna Rock-Garden

1. Follow up on Bahulaban Barn/Ox Program Project

Currently the rubble from the site is being cleaned up and Vyasasana will serve as the project manager for Bahulaban barn renovations. This is an ongoing project that will require monthly reporting.

2. Follow Up on ECOV Documentary

In June, ECOV allocated $600 to Sabrina Jones, a college student majoring in cinematography at West Liberty University, to help her purchase a camera. In exchange, she agreed to shoot some footage of the garden for an ECOV film project being overseen by Kripamaya. She reported to Kripamaya that she is not able to complete the project and will return the funds.

3.  Proposal to designate Sankirtan Prabhu as New Vrindaban Folklorist

Chaitanya Mangala has proposed that ISKCON New Vrindaban (and ECO-Vrindaban) needs to develop an overall story that brings together key elements of the past – told in a cohesive way – that is relevant to our present and will help guide us towards a future we want manifest.

Sankirtan has expressed an interest in filling this position and others have recommended him for this role. He is a professional storyteller and has trained many people, including the students of the gurukula, devotee adults, non-devotee adults, and students in schools outside NV in storytelling and the importance of story both on a personal level and a community level. He also has a website or blog with a lot of NV’s history through stories.

Navin Shyam will speak with Sankirtan about this.

4. ECOV logo, brochure & posters

WHEREAS: The ECOV Board wishes to update its logo to better reflect its connection with ISKCON New Vrindaban, the New Vrindaban Community in general, its name change and the recent refinement of its mission statement.

RESOLVED: The Board authorizes up to $500 for Raghu Consbruck to design a new logo and other related graphics.

Room Without A Roof
→ Seed of Devotion

Images from yesterday's wedding play through my mind in snippets of magic.

The mysticism of the ceremony,
the tears of those present,
Jai's sober expression as he vowed to protect Syama,
the grins of pure joy of everyone (yes, everyone) dancing in kirtan,
Syama's effulgent smile and flaring skirt as she twirled,
the rooftop bedecked with white tents
and white globes
and golden lights,
the undulating skyscape of New York City glittering below us,
toasts,
laughing so hard I can't breathe,
the couple's first dance,
everyone dancing slow,
then fast, to "Ain't No Mountain High Enough,"
the delicious lemon poppyseed and chocolate cakes,
helping clean up,
dancing to "Happy."

Although it's popular, I heard the song "Happy" by Pharrell Williams for the first time last night. The lyrics sent chills down my spine.

Because I'm happy
Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof
Because I'm happy
Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth

It was a reminder that the soul's nature is to be happy. There's no hard work to it. It's just about being alive, feeling like a "room without a roof." All day, I felt as though that day was about being happy. Let the couple be happy, let the guests be happy, let God be happy.

Let go.

Let happiness in.

It's so easy.

Just BE.

That's the truth.

When I danced to the song "Happy" at the end of the night, the part of the song that kept coming, "Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof," was so perfect, as I and everyone else was on the rooftop of the Bhakti Center and only a thin tent separated us from a limitless sky.

We Are Committed To This Prayer
→ Japa Group

"We are committed to this prayer on a daily basis. We refuse to go without it. May Krishna always bless us with taste and determination to chant our japa faithfully, day in and day out, and may He give us the attentiveness to make a decent performance.
May we not cheat ourselves with inattentive chanting but do our part according to the free will given us to hear the holy names with attention."

Say a couple of mantras for me, okay?
→ Dandavats.com

It was Robin Williams, a leading American actor and comedian. To get his attention creatively, I fanned out the books I had in my hand and waved them near his face as he walked toward me. Startled, he smiled at me. “Quickly,” I said, “tell me what you see.” “Books—but that’s not what you’re going to say, right?” “True. What I am showing you is the key to the past, present, and future. And with this key, you can dissolve all anxiety.” “You have good improvisational skills. You should be an evangelist.” Read more ›
