"O Lord Gauranga! The fifth namaparadha is to think that the glories of the holy name are exaggerated, as for example when one thinks, 'The scriptural presentation of the glories of the Lord's holy name is not entirely true, because hyperbole has been employed to increase the readers' faith in the chanting of the name.'" New Vrindaban’s Ongoing Community Dialogs Show Increased Interest

A Progressive Community Dialogue

On Wed. July 30, 2014 Jaya Krsna Prabhu invited all the residents of the New Vrindaban Community to come together for a dialog.

He opened the evening by asking the devotees for their concerns, input or feedback on topics of their choice.

A discussion ensued on the topic of the need to reduce waste at the temple, and to recycle materials. Sukhavaha dasi and Bhakta Michael agreed to build a sub-committee to come up with proposals.

Community Dialog under the Lodge Aug. 2014

Then, Jaya Krsna presented Srila Prabhupada’s five-fold vision for New Vrindaban, including cow protection, self-sufficiency, a holy place of pilgrimage, spiritual education, and above all developing our love for Krsna.

Jaya Krsna concluded that New Vrindaban is currently in phase number four of the six phases of the transformation of a spiritual community. He feels that the painful transition phase is over; the current phase is the process of stabilization.

Different community members arriving since the last Community Dialog were officially introduced to everyone present. We very gratefully welcome Lakshmana Isvara das (Lakshman Poddar’s initiated name), Brihat Kirtan das, Mangala Carana dasi, Vrindavanesvari dasi, Daivata das (one of the very early Brijbasis), Premarani dasi, Rajesvari dasi, Pundarika Vidyanidhi das, his wife Janaki dasi, and their daughter Harina. We are glad to have Bhakta Trevor back from Denver, as well as two new bhaktas: Bhakta Michael and Bhakta Andre.

Six additional devotees have been helping out for the summer, doing a lot of nice service, namely Bhaktin Autumn, Bhaktin Rose, Madhava Kanti dasi, Madhavanta das, Premarani dasi and Sri Nama das.

Jaya Krsna has observed that many of our annual festivals have become even deeper this year than ever before, such as the Snana Yatra, Ratha Yatra and Puspha Abhishek, to name a few. New Vrindaban’s number of visitors is increasing year over year. He has also noticed that the cooperation amongst the devotees is increasing, as people are making more endeavors to work out their differences. The department heads are moving in the direction of solving challenges more on their own, supported by the devotee relations dept.

New Vrindaban Jaya Krsna Community Dialog

Jaya Krsna das speaks at Community Dialog

He went on to share some of New Vrindaban’s many successes. The monthly Palace sangams have been going on steadily. There is an official new department for devotee relations. And, interestingly, since the arrival of our new temple commander, it seems as though Krsna has reciprocated by sending some new bhaktas.

Overall, Jaya Krsna feels that the challenges this year have been minor, compared to some previous years.

To give an overview, we can start with reporting one very nice improvement at the Palace. The beautiful and unique Palace Rose Garden is entering an exciting new phase.   Great progress is already being made on its way to going “green” and sustainable.

Meanwhile, down at the temple area, fresh, organic vegetables have been delivered regularly throughout the summer to Krsna’s kitchen from our organic gardens. Fresh home-grown flowers can be seen in all the Deities’ garlands and vases as well.

The devotees who attended a recent workshop at the Lodge, on healthy diet have become encouraged by the move to decrease the use of sugar and oil in the devotee kitchen, and to increase the overall use of healthy produce.

ISKCON NV is about to acquire the land at Govardhan from Varsana Maharaj, with the aim of supporting its ongoing development, under the inspiration of Maharaj.

Renovations and improvements are taking place all around town. There is the elephant’s new facelift, the temple guest wing renovations, the upgrading of cabin two, and an extension on the small cow barn. You have probably also noticed all sorts of new signage around the community to help guide the guests. You may have also detected the quantities of mint sprouting up around the temple and lodge buildings.

In response to the requests of many residents, there are various new projects in the works. There will be an ox barn at Bahulaban, sponsored by ECOV. The basketball court down by the apartments will be fixed. Renovations on the swan boat house have already begun. There will be one or two apts. reserved as assisted living quarters for future hospice patients, to be overseen by Yasoda dasi.

The many projects to be financed by the Uttica lease bonus were presented during the meeting.

Jaya Krsna then spoke about some of the preaching in ISKCON from which New Vrindaban can take inspiration. He explained that throughout ISKCON, some of the Western preaching is being adjusted to appeal to the current new age scene. This is, of course, in line with Krsna consciousness and Srila Prabhupada’s vision. He is referring to such topics as expanding to deal with animal rights, not just cow protection; and focusing on the ECO movement, which considers four main necessities for success: water, energy, food and waste.

Jaya Krsna reminded everyone of a deep understanding offered in a workshop recently given in NV by Gauranga Prasad das from Mumbai. He warned us of the three “cancers” to be avoided in relationships in Kali Yuga.

They are:

  • Comparing
  • Blaming &
  • Criticizing.

In the mood of avoiding these three “cancers”, Jaya Krsna is urging devotees who have any concerns, input or feedback to consider several options. They may feel free to approach the New Vrindaban Advocacy Sanga, which is not a management group, but rather a group of concerned residents available as potential advocates for any other residents. Its members are Caitanya Bhagavat dasa, Gaura Shakti dasa, Jesse, Lilasuka dasi, Lokadrsti dasi, Nityodita dasa, Pritha dasi, and Vyasasan dasa. Sukhavaha in the devotee relations department is also available, as is Jaya Krsna himself.

On the subject of gas drilling, Jaya Krsna informed the community members that Chesapeake is planning to drill at Bilvaban (dump field) in December 2014. Fossil informed the community informally that they do not plan to drill on our land due to the many limitations of the Uttica contract.

Some devotees who attended the community dialogue gave some feedback.

One devotee commented that New Vrindaban is “not just another Hare Krsna farm”. They wanted people to remember that in addition to a farm’s duties of protecting cows and practicing self-sufficiency, Srila Prabhupada made it clear that he very much wanted the NV devotees to keep NV a holy place of pilgrimage.

Sankirtan expressed his concerns about the imminent coal mine shaft that the coal company intends to put up on the Rose property right behind the temple

One devotee visiting from another temple asked for a copy of the overview of this community dialog. She exclaimed, “We never have such nice gatherings like this at our temple, so I’d like them to see what you are doing here at NV, to encourage them to also have such conversations.”

Vasana cannot be annihilated, but it can be redirected
→ The Spiritual Scientist

“You cannot kill the human propensities, but they can be changed for higher purposes. You said of annihilation of desire or vasana. But you can think on it very wisely if vasana can be stopped at all. No. Vasana can never be stopped. The vasana is an eternal function of the soul and as the soul is eternal or sanatana so also is the vasana. Therefore vasana can be changed only from one object to another. The mind is always a thinking and feeling organ. It does not matter what does it think but it is a fact that it thinks. I am sure that you cannot probably put the mind completely at rest without thinking something. So the quality of thinking, feeling, and willing has to be changed but we may not attempt to kill the mind altogether. That is an impossible fact because the mind acts even after the so-called death or after the annihilation of the material body” (SP Letter to Ved Prakashji,).

Keep it real!
→ KKSBlog

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, September 2013, Cape Town, South Africa, Bhagavad-gita 9.9)

krsna in vrindavanKrsna is full of love and full of kindness. We are too focused on the reality of the body, on this life we are going through… Whereas Krsna is not illusioned by the material forms, Krsna is seeing the soul. He is interested in the service the soul has rendered because that is actually blissful activity. Anything else is never blissful. Any material activity is never ever blissful! Sometimes we are hoping that it is going to be. We hope that the material energy will be fulfilling our desires and as soon as there is a little enjoyment we say, “Yes, yes, yes! Now I am happy. Now I am so happy!”

But how happy are you really? Are you really happy? Who are you trying to convince? Material happiness is not going to be possible.

This verse (BG 9.9), takes us to this aspect of the material world, that Krsna has nothing to do with the material world. He is not interested in the material world; he did not want the material world. He does not particularly want to do anything with the material world. It is not his design, his plan. It is all the plan of the living beings. Krsna’s plan is something totally different – it is the spiritual world, and Krsna makes endless efforts to bring all living beings back to the spiritual world, in someway or other but to become a resident of spiritual world requires a certain quality, so Krsna does make many arrangements for us to learn.

“My father was always very loving to all of us. He was always our well-wisher. Whatever we did, he was there to support us. Whenever we came he would want to have a kirtan. It didn’t matter if it was just for five minutes. He would just do it real quick. It didn’t matter what was going on in our lives. Even if we were broken down on the side of the road, he would say, ‘Let’s have a kirtan. It’s alright, let’s have a kirtan right now.’ I think I will hold that the strongest in my heart—because of him I will never stop chanting.”

On July 26, as part of their annual International night, we took our Festival of Vedic India program into Melbourne High School. We had a henna and Gopi dots stall as well as a space for people to try on Indian traditional wear. The traditional wear included saris, lehengas, jewellery for the women, and kurta, pants, shawl, and turbans for the men. In the photos you can see that even the principal, Mr Jeremy Ludowyke, was excited to participate by getting dres6sed up. Read more ›

Why does Krishna emphasise consciousness at death which is much more uncontrollable than consciousness while living?
→ The Spiritual Scientist

From Pandurang Charan P

Why does Krishna put emphasis on consciousness while leaving the body to determine one next destination. While we are in the healthy state it is kind of easier to remember Krishna, though that is also difficult than while leaving the body there would be so many problems with one struggling to leave the body.
Why would Krishna not request remembering him while the body is healthy vs putting so much emphasis on remembering him while leaving the body.

Reincarnation and Karma: How It All Works?
→ Dandavats.com

Do we only live once? It all depends on one's perspective. If you think we're nothing but chemicals with no soul, then yes, it is the end. If you believe in only one life and then it's heaven or hell, then no. It's especially not the end if you happen to believe in reincarnation. Reincarnation suggests this is not our first life on Earth and it's most likely not our last. Read more ›

Lord Krsna and His holy name are identical. They are an omnipotent spiritual sun that destroys the darkness of nescience. To stream mercy upon the conditioned souls the sun of the holy name has arisen on the horizon of this material world. The mist of ignorance and the clouds of anartha spread a blanket over the jiva's vision so that he is unable to see the sunlike holy name. The sun is too big for any cloud or mist to cover, but if the jiva's vision is obscured, then the sun is hidden from him. Read more ›

Srila Prabhupada’s “Only Prayer” is that New Vrindaban will be “More and More Successful” – November 1975

Prabhupada Palace of Gold New Vrindaban

The Palace is to Srila Prabhupada what a precious setting is to a diamond.

Srila Prabhupada’s “Only Prayer” is that New Vrindaban will be “More and More Successful” – November 1975.

An excerpt from a letter written by Srila Prabhupada outlining his vision for New Vrindaban.

—————————————————————————–

I am always praying to Krsna that the New Vrindaban attempt will be more and more successful and ideal for your country. That is my only prayer. I am glad to note that Indians are coming and that you are constructing a large kirtan and prasadam hall and also guest rooms. Yes, so you should do it and it will actually be a New Vrindaban in America. According to our program we will have to construct seven temples, Govindaji, Gopinatha, Madana-Mohana, Syamasundara, Damodara, Gokulananda and Radha-Ramana. And later on if possible, Rangunatha also. These guests rooms, it is very good you are constructing because they were needed.

I am glad also that you have a new gosala. Let other farms see what is our behavior for the cows and how we derive benefit from them and that will be the living example to persons who are using cow flesh rather than cow milk.

Regarding the palace, when will you expect to finish it so I may go there?”

The Lord is not responsible for our bondage – we are
→ The Spiritual Scientist

“Because he is a living soul, he has the capacity to desire by his free will. Such desire is fulfilled only by the omnipotent Lord. And so, when the living entity is bewildered in his desires, the Lord allows him to fulfill those desires, but the Lord is never responsible for the actions and reactions of the particular situation which may be desired. Being in a bewildered condition, therefore, the embodied soul identifies himself with the circumstantial material body and becomes subjected to the temporary misery and happiness of life” (Bhagavad-gita 5.15 purport).

Three Workers

I heard some talking going on from across the street and slightly above.  I turned my head as a natural response.  Three guys in hardhats at a construction site were looking right at me.  One was brown bodied, one was white, and the third was oriental.

The brown guy offered pranams (palms together).  The oriental guy looked at the brown guy doing pranams and engaged in a smile, while the white dude who was standing in the middle did a little head toss.  I reciprocated with their responses which were triggered by my being there.  Whatever dialogue went on between the three of the workers, I was not privy to.  I know that the initial reaction from them was favourable and respectable.

I went on my way towards my destination to a gathering of vintage Krishna folks, where we would enjoy each other’s bonding.  To the program, I, as usual, tend to take note of reactions from people.  Indeed, cyclists and pedestrians responded rather positively, apart from the three workers.  I see that greeting someone is a kind of service that people are obliged to indulge in.  There is that social need in extending neighbourly gestures.  Let’s face it, life can be extremely grim if it wasn’t for small traces of lightness that’s inserted within.

A “Good morning! “ “Hello!  How are you?”  Or just delivering a smile.  Maybe a “Namaste”, a “Hare Krishna”, go a long way to leading people towards improving the quality of life.  Of course, it really helps when you have a unique set of duds on that puts the thought of spirituality in the mind.  It makes the greeting that much more interesting.

Madrid, Spain

Fast In and Fast Out

It’s a first for me in Madrid, we had a few hours to kill, so to speak.  No better place could be found, but any place where there’s devotion, right?  Arrival time to Madrid was early and a nice person, temple commander of this ISKCON Centre came for the pickup of a monk and his travelling assistant, Mohit, to that place of devotion.

It’s Europe, you know, so everything is tight in the developed part of the city.  Whether it be kitchen, bedroom, toilet, eating space, it’s tight, but smartly tight.  European architecture?  Beautiful!

I gave a talk, had no time for a walk.  Temple is quaint, devotees sweet, time to depart.  Our car smashed into the door of a truck.  Quickly, Mohit and I had to switch to a cab.

In fast forward, over the Atlantic, came the arrival into Canada.  We were greeted by a smiling Maha Bhagavat, a member of our Toronto community.  At his home, we munched on wraps.  Instead of a nap at his home, I vied for a stroll via Finch Avenue down on Leslie Street and then Eglinton Avenue.

When I walk, I take it all in, I observe, I smell, I experience, I nod (to people), I notice the concrete, the grass, the apple and plum trees, the Rivers.  I see cracks in the sidewalk, and I see solid spots.  I see below me and above me and the front of me, especially when crossing the road.  I have no radio, no box in which to be crammed as in automobile.  I am free and I watch prisoners of cars go by me.  I’m free up to a point until I get picked up to get brought back home.  Then, it’s a different kind of freedom, because I’m with spiritual people.

May the Source be with you!

Last Day

The last day’s visit to this extraordinary place in the Canary Islands was crowned with a ceremony.  Cuban born, Janardan, accepted his 2nd initiation this morning.  He’s a smart young guy and has won a scholarship for mathematics at the University at Madrid, he’s studying and teaching.  His accepting the brahminical initiation allows him some privileges in our community.  In Cuba and in Spain, people love when he gives a class in bhakti yoga.

Both Yadunanda Swami and I spoke on the importance of brahminical input into human society.  Some of the points made are as follows:

1)      A brahmin aspires to understand both energies of matter and spirit.
2)      A brahmin is a visionary and shares his/her vision, working towards an improved world.
3)      A brahmin is a guru for the community and acts as teacher, trainer, guide, coach, mentor (cheerleader, even) in the spiritual sciences.
4)      A brahmin always endeavours to be clean, honest and see through the eyes of wisdom (shastra).
5)      A brahmin may be cold with himself, as in being austere, but is warm with everyone else.

While I took personal time with Janardan before and after the fire ceremony to honour his achievement, there were other people who wanted personal dialogue, this I obliged.  It did consume the day.  Also a final stop at a gorgeous plot of land that is the future site of a temple and cultural centre.  Before the ride to the airport, a small assembly of devotees had last goodbyes while we were reading quotations and memories about our guru, Srila Prabhupada.  In a sense the day was not complete because I found no  minutes to put on some walking shoes and blaze a trail.  My feet felt antsy going on the plane.
