In Vrinda?vana the effulgent ground is fashioned with many very wonderful colorful cinta?an jewels, the trees and vines are full of blissful spiritual fruits and flowers, the birds make a great tumult by reciting the hymns of the Sa?ma Veda, and the lakes and streams are filled with transcendental nectar. May my heart meditate on Vrinda?vana in this way.

“I’ll carry what you lack”
→ KKSBlog

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, 08 March 2014, Sydney, Australia, Bhagavad-gita 13.3)

Arjuna Acarya was a pundit who was writing a commentary on the Bhagavad-gita, and as he was writing he came along this verse, which basically says:

“I’ll carry what you lack and I’ll preserve what you have.”

KB_23 March 2014When Arjuna Acarya was reading this verse, he was thinking, “Well, of course Krsna doesn’t personally do that. He will make arrangements for that.” And he changed the Sanskrit wording in the manuscript.

After his editing and commentary, he went about purchasing some supplies from the market so that his wife could cook lunch. He didn’t return, but some boys came carrying a big bag. His wife opened the door and they said, “Your husband sent us with the supplies.”

She said, “Oh, come in! That is very nice – such nice boys like yourselves are bringing these things. Come in, I’ll give you something.”

The boys said, “Oh no! We cannot come in.”

She said, “No, it’s okay, you can come in.”

The boys said, “No, we cannot come in – your husband may come.”

She said, “Don’t worry. You don’t have to be afraid of my husband. He is very nice. He won’t beat you.”

“Oh no?” one of the boys said, and he showed his back, revealing beating marks.

“No! Did my husband do that?” And then the boys left.

Some time later, Arjuna Acarya came home and something extraordinary had happened. His wife had cooked and she had already eaten before him. That was unheard of in those days. He was shocked.  And when he asked her what was going on, she wouldn’t reply. Arjuna Acharya wanted to know what he did wrong and asked for forgiveness.

Finally, she told him, “You brute! How could you beat those boys?”

“Beat those boys! Which boys?”

“You know! One had a light complexion, one had a dark complexion – you know very well!”

“What boys?”

“You know very well! The dark boy had beating marks on his back!”

Then Arjuna Acharya suddenly understood. He walked to his manuscript and he saw that the words that he had altered were changed back to yoga-ksemam vahamy aham  ”I carry, I personally carry what you lack, and  I’ll preserve what you have.”

So then Arjuna Acharya could see that Krsna personally comes. He personally came, he personally adjusted things. So it is like that. Krsna will make us successful. As simple as that! As long as we are sincerely trying to serve him.

We Change During Japa
→ Japa Group

Chanting attentive Japa opens one's heart to higher and higher stages of loving God, just as natural forces make a lotus unfold or the moon seem to wax.

We Japa chanters often begin a japa session dull, anxious, or bewildered. We leave it strong and focused. Why? Not because our breath becomes regulated or our minds numb; we change during Japa because, however awkwardly, we are associating with Krsna by chanting His name.

I Went To Prison

My dear friend, Akhilananda, from Salem, Ohio, took me to the Trumbull Correctional Center to see Arjuna, a prisoner (aren’t we all?), and who will serve time for another 8 years.  Because of his great conduct, officers and inmates at the institution love him.  He has been put in charge of the art department for the whole place.  Arjuna isn’t anyone I can walk with until he is discharged, but I can certainly visit him annually.  He gave the good news that he’s soon to be engaged which will last until marriage, and which also won’t happen until the sentence is terminated.  Both Akhila and I are thrilled about this new development and are impressed with Arjuna’s patience.

To Columbus I went.  There, I had the pleasure to trek with our sole monk from Krishna House located in the Ohio State University District.  Nitai Gauranga is the name of the monk who accompanied me along the Olentangy River, a stream of constant water that flows to the Mississippi.  The city here has put incredible energy into revitalizing and beautifying the river banks and protecting it from erosion.  I’m told the trail along the way goes a good 22 miles.

To be explored at a later date.

Finally, evening came along and the usual Thursday gathering showed up.  From the Bhagavad Gita we spoke on 11.54 regarding unbroken service which repairs the broken heart.

In hindsight, at the prison, a janitor asked, “What order do you belong to?”

I had to repeat myself more than once, “Hare Krishna.”

He obviously never heard the term before, and asked, “What kind of Christians?”

I repeated, “Hare Krishna.”

Thinking he got it right this time, he said what he thought I said, “Oh, Happy Christians.”

“Alright, whatever,” I thought, and he went back to sweeping.

Cleveland, Ohio

In Cleveland

I arrived at the bus depot in downtown Cleveland, and while I enjoyed this new space, so did some meadowlarks that happened to get inside.  They flew from light fixture to light fixture, pooping around and sometimes they came in for a landing pickingup a snack scrap or two left on the floor.  They appeared to be trapped though, and they weren’t sure how to get out.

This dynamic nearly reminded me of a famous episode in the epic, The Mahabharat, where Abhimanyu, the young warrior, so expertly was able to penetrate through the military barrier.  Once in, he was unable to exit as the barrier closed in on him. It is actually a sad moment in the story, and it meant Abhimanyu’s end

Dayal Nitai, my host in Cleveland, had come to fetch me while I had eyes on birds, and mind on the battlefield.  Once we arrived at his home at Hillsdale Road, he treated me to some of his raw food preparations.  He tells me he’s writing a book which includes those recipes of his, “Masterpiece Recipies”.

Now to work off the calories of that fine food, I ventured off, but only for an hour, taking in good air and moving my limbs.  I satisfy myself in breathing in what is one of the greatest gifts, and I appreciate that my legs  are the most outstanding mobilizers that a human can savour in.

A Wednesday group met at Dayal’s in the evening, and after a kirtan, our discussion based on the Bhagavad Gita 11.53/54, was all about the aspiration to see God.  Our conclusion was that as you pursue devotion, the eagerness to have a vision of someone calms down, and that energy transforms to “doing”, at which time, God sees you.

May the Source be with you!

How time flies

Social media is a an interesting thing indeed and has the ability to send some surprises probably one of the most sobering is an old long forgotten school picture.
Sobering given how much time has passed since it’s being taken and so many hopes and aspirations that are still to be realised makes me wonder how the others in the picture are doing did they achieve the dreams all primary school children have for their future.
Dreams and hopes give way to the reality of life but still hope one day.
Time and the age of Kali take it’s toll on the entrapped spirit soul but still a great belief that some how things will work out just as we planned it, I will be the pilot flying around the world with a beautiful wife and even more beautiful children.
But I feel more fortunate even though this child hood aspirations have never been realised
Some how I came across the devotees, read Srila Prabhupada’s books and been able to do some seva for Sri Sri RadhaGokulananda.
Is this the greatest achievement making life successful when the mind is focused not on material gain but spiritual gain’s that are hard to measure without spiritual knowledge, I wonder how many of these young individuals achieved their goal in life or look back a little frustrated or with regrets.
Society measures success indeed we measure our own success on a false image of reality but even if externally to others we appear to have everything their is still internal strife for more, an eternal endeavour.
Even in spiritual life I find the same drive a need for more, the amazing exception is their is no regrets or maybe just one why did I not have this opportunity earlier, but with each small progressive step bliss and relief from material suffering.
Indeed for me peoples wealth and social status means less and less even my own progress materially seems pointless compared to spiritual progress and watching the amazing development of those who’s spiritual vision is progressing nicely.
But still sobering seeing the old school photo and how quickly time has passed, reminding me that their is no time to loose in striving for more spiritual rather than material progress

Indradyumna Swami: Yesterday we visited the ancestreal home of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu in Jajpur, Orissa. Mahaprabhu's parents, Jagannatha Mirsa and Saci Mata lived there before migrating to Bengal. Their home no longer exists, but there is a temple on the grounds that has deities of Gaura Nitai that have been worshipped since the time of Lord Caitanya. While traveling to Jagannatha Puri after taking sanyasa, Lord Caitanya passed through Jajpur. Because He was a sannyasi He did not enter His ancestrael home, but instead sat on a stone outside the complex for sometime. That stone still exists and is worshipped daily in the temple by a 93 year old brahmacari who had a dream of Mahaprabhu when he was 12. Read more ›

My Dear Kirtanananda and Hayagriva,

Please accept my blessings. I am in due receipt of your letter dated August 20, 1968, and was so much pleased to read the contents carefully. Now I can understand clearly the mining position; anyway, as it is clear to everyone of us, now we can work with great enthusiasm for constructing a New Vrindaban in the United States of America. People who came from Europe to this part of the world, they named so many new provinces, and countries, just like New England, New Amsterdam, New York, so I also came in this part of the world to preach Krishna Consciousness and by His Grace and by your endeavor, New Vrindaban is being constructed. That is my great happiness. Our sincere endeavor in the service of the Lord, and the Lord’s assistants, to make our progressive march successful, are two important things to be followed in spiritual advancement of life. I think it was Krishna’s desire that this New Vrindaban scheme should be taken up by us, and now He has given us a great opportunity to serve Him in this scheme. So let us do it sincerely and all other help will come automatically. I am very glad to notice in Kirtanananda’s letter that he has realized more and more that the function of New Vrindaban is nothing physical or bodily, but purely spiritual and for the glorification of the Lord, Sri Hari. If we actually keep this view in our front, certainly we shall be successful in our progressive march.

I am very glad to learn, Kirtanananda, you are feeling so much happy in serving a beautiful Jagannatha Murtis which you have taken from Montreal. The aratrik ceremony can be performed as follows: The first aratrik ceremony is performed as you have seen in Vrindaban, at Radha Damodara Temple, early in the morning, before sunrise, at least one and a half hour before sunrise. The second aratrik is performed at about 8:00 in the morning, after dressing and decorating the Deity with flowers. The third aratrik is performed after offering the luncheon to the Deity. And then the fourth aratrik is performed in the evening. And the fifth aratrik is performed when the Lord goes to bed. So you have got practical experience, you have seen how they are doing in Radha Damodara Temple, and gradually, as far as possible, you can introduce them. Jagannatha Swami is very kind to the fallen souls, because He is the Lord of the Universe, and all the living creatures are His subjects, therefore, Jagannatha Swami will bless you with all the required intelligence, how to satisfy Him. On the bathing ghats in India, generally, they install Lord Siva’s Murti, but that is not possible here, neither we want to divert attention in so many performances. Concentrate in one temple, and then we shall extend one after another. Immediately the scheme should be to have a temple in the center as you have already taken the plan, and residential quarter for the Brahmacaris, or Grhasthas, and let us go ahead with that plan at first.

Our next attempt should be to establish a New Vrindaban post office at our door, and if you can arrange for this. I think to establish a post office nearby it will be required that you get some letters from all centers. So this will not be difficult if that is the rule. First of all you know from authorities what is the paraphernalia, rules, to get a post office, then we shall advise all our centers to send you letters, at least 6 or one dozen from each center, and this will be sufficient to give proof that we are getting letters plenty.

The scheme regarding the will of Hayagriva Brahmacari, as well as the lease agreement between the society and Hayagriva Brahmacari, the tax payment, all this scheme are very nicely made, and I have got all my approval and so far the trustees are concerned, this is also required, and I can suggest that amongst the trustees, your two names, Kirtanananda and Hayagriva, and then Brahmananda, and from San Francisco Jayananda, and Mukunda, and Satsvarupa, Dayananda, Syamasundara., etc. and such sincere boys, who are working with their life and soul for the society, may be the trustees, and I think you should immediately make correspondence with Brahmananda, and I have already advised him that we should make a central committee. for management of all the centers. Or, if especially for New Vrindaban, different trustees required, that I cannot say. In my idea, there should be one central body of trustees for directing all the different centers as well as New Vrindaban, but there must be a local governing body for each center, that is my idea. Now you are consulting with some lawyers, you can take their suggestion also, but do everything very nicely so that we can serve Krishna without any difficulty.

Regarding Bhagavat edition: I have already decided that we must have a press. But it is understood that starting of press in New Vrindaban may not be very feasible, because if there is something wrong in the press, it will be difficult to repair it. Advaita, he is now working in some press for becoming our future press expert in running on the press. Advaita, Uddhava, both of them are working. And I have already advised that as soon as they assure that they can manage a press working, we shall immediately start the press.

Regarding editing of Bhagavatam: Certainly it will be entrusted to you, because Rayarama is engaged in the Back to Godhead. Hardly he will get some time. So I have decided to print Srimad-Bhagavatam in 12 volumes, naming them differently. I have decided in this way; 1st vol., Creation; 2nd vol., Cosmic Manifestation; 3rd vol., Status quo; 4th vol., Mercy of God; 5th vol., Creative Energy; 6th vol., The Rulers of the Universe; 7th vol., Activities of God; 8th vol., Dissolution; 9th vol., Liberation; 10th vol., Ultimate Goal; 11th vol., General History; 12th vol., The Age of Deterioration.

You told me that you will arrange for the electricity immediately, so as soon as electricity connection is there, I shall go and stay in New Vrindaban for some time. Maybe, Krishna desiring, I may make my headquarters there. Your suggestion that Pondicherry was made famous on account of press work, it is good suggestion and my Guru Maharaja’s opinion is that press is the brihat mrdanga, or the biggest, or the greater mrdanga. The sound of press goes long long distance, long distant places, so the organization of press and literature and public sales, should be our main business.

The San Francisco devotees are in New York, and so you may not send the Caitanya lila just now, better you finish it nicely. Then we shall see what to do.

Yes, Rayarama is trying his heart and soul to improve the quality of Back To Godhead, so this department should be exclusively managed by him, he has devoted his everything for this Back To Godhead department. I have asked also Janardana to join the editorial department of publication, and he will do translation work in French, of all our literatures, and similarly Syamasundara. may help in translating all the literatures in Germany, and I am arranging to take the mimeograph machine from New York, into Montreal, so that Janardana and other boy, Dayala Nitai, who is French Canadian, they can immediately issue, a French edition of Back To Godhead.

I am so pleased to learn that Kirtanananda, you have already attracted neighboring devotees by your presentation of Prasadam. I am sure this Prasadam attraction will make our neighbors friendly and surely they will come in number in future so that New Vrindaban will be ideal place for visiting from the neighboring provinces, counties, I think so and it will be done nicely. I am so glad to learn that you are feeling too much engagement in New Vrindaban, and this a spiritual inspiration. Our society should never be a devil’s workshop, but it should be certainly the most magnificent platform for spiritual activities.

You will be pleased also to know that I am trying for religious minister’s immigration visa in USA, and it is almost finished, and I am hopeful of becoming successful. Hope this will meet you all in good health, and complete Krishna Consciousness,

Your ever well-wisher,

A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami

P.S. The goat can be named Revachhagai, and the cow can be named as Surabhigai. Also you will be pleased to note that I’ve asked Gaurasundara to make a layout of the whole land and I shall place 7 different temples in different situation, as prototype of Vrindaban. There will be seven principle temples, namely, Govinda, Gopinatha, Madana Mohana, Syamasundara., Radha Ramana, Radha Damodara, and Gokulananda. Of course in Vrindaban, there are about more or less, big and small, about 5,000 temples; that is a far distant scheme. But immediately, we shall take up constructing at least 7 temples in different situations, meadows and buildings. So I am trying to make a plan out of the description of the plot of our leased land. And the hilly portions may be name as Govardhana. Govardhana-side, the pasturing grounds for the cows may be allotted.

N.B. Hamsaduta is performing kirtana in the park, and yesterday he collected 24 dollars. There is some picture in the paper and I am sending one herewith.

"While we are impressed with your qualifications, after careful consideration we have decided not to advance your application in the hiring process at this time."

Two nights ago I read these words and heaved a sigh. My shoulders slumped. I had put so much effort into my application for this teacher apprenticeship program - cover letters, resumes, even an interview. It had been my ideal program. I had been applying to many other programs as well, but with this one especially I had dared let my spirits rise. Now...

Nothing.

Back to square one.

I've been searching for the right place to teach and learn for a full year now. But my career progress has kept slamming into a brick wall.  At this point, nothing is consoling me.

Today I went to a basketball tournament to watch a friend's 11-year-old son play. For the first game, each player seemed to make each shot as if by magic. They worked together seamlessly. We all cheered when they won.

The second game, both teams played with ferocity. But our team lagged; towards the second half, they were 24 points behind. Catching up seemed impossible.

The second half, our team exploded with momentum. 20 points behind. 14 points behind. 10. 7. The other team's score was at a standstill. I couldn't help but feel this crazy hope rise in my chest.

Would we make it?

59 seconds left.

36.

20.

5... 4... 3... 2... 1...

Our team lost.

Families cheered for our team, telling them they had done well. I overheard the coach tell some parents, "How they played in that second half was better than a win,"

I agreed. What a spectacular game. If you lost, so what, learn and move on, right? What matters is the effort.

I was leaving the gymnasium when I saw one of the young boys from our team - his mother was helping him put on his coat. The boy's face looked grim.

"Hey," I called out, "You played an amazing game out there, great job,"

The boy barely looked at me, his face turning even darker.

"That's what I told him," his mother said, "but he won't listen,"

I insisted, "How you played in that second half was just amazing,"

The boy turned away from me, shrugging on his coat.

I walked away, pensive. The expression on that boy's face resonated deeply with me. As the hours go on, I can't help but feel such a kinship with that boy. A relief that someone else in this world can feel the way I do, a human being who feels disheartened, discouraged, and plain old sad.

When I've done my best, and my best isn't enough, maybe for awhile it's okay to hang my head.

I'm sure the little boy would agree, too.

Traveling Prasadam Distribution

Krsnagana das, who formerly lived near Cairns in North Queensland, became a devotee seven or eight years ago and joined the asrama at New Govardhana. After a while he began traveling with Braja Gauranga das all over Australia doing prasadam catering at different festivals.

In those days the set-up  was quite simple – traveling with a light truck that carried a tent, the pots, burners, bhoga, tables etc.
However, over the last few years the various City Councils required the devotees to upgrade to something more solid that meets the ever expanding health code system.
The devotees asked a local company in Murwillumbah to make a “fifth wheeler” kitchen with ovens, steamers and proper washing facilities. They attached it to a truck and set off around the country for more prasadam distribution.

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, 03 October 2013, Melbourne, Australia, Srimad Bhagavatam 2.3.8)

gold_giftSrila Prabhupada tells a story of the Kali worshiper, who goes to Kali (goddess) for some benediction to solve some material problem and promised to offer a goat. When the material problem got solved, no goat was offered. So when the worshiper went to the temple, Kali asked, “Where is my goat?”

“Oh Kali, what can I do? The prices are so high these days. The economy and everything is really bad. I just cannot afford a goat.”

(Kali) “All right, offer me a fly.” The next day, still no fly.

(Kali) “You did not even offer me a fly?”

“Oh, you know Kali, it is so difficult to catch a fly but you have many hands so for you it might be much easier. So why don’t you catch the fly for yourself.”

All right, this is a gross comparison – a comparison of worshiping of Kali which is ghastly where we are offering goats and flies. But the point of mentality is what we are interested in. We can recognize these mentalities in our selves – laziness!
