Humanity In Two Days

At the day’s end, I took that stroll down Yonge Street through a light drizzle—a winding-down of sorts. The day was long and the extension to it, the day prior, made it impactful.

Godbrothers and Godsisters came together to remember Rsi, aka Rick Hobson, who recently passed away. His sister, Sandra, came, as well as his stepson, Kailash. What we recalled of Rsi was this soft-spoken, but humerous side of him. Those of us from the Toronto community credit him for being a pioneer of book sales of the Bhagavad-gita, distributing prasadam in Govinda’s, in addition to being a receptionist.

Dear Rsi, you won’t be forgotten.

Within these last two days, I have been approached by varying individuals to pray for them concerning illness, relationship issues, exams, and for someone perishing. Lots of prayers. This activity, of course, is a component of devotional life.

An “Evening of Bhakti” held in the temple room drew a crowd of kirtan lovers. I also had dinner with Ritesh, a tabla master, along with partner, Melissa. And one outstanding event to write home about was the grand opening of a new centre for ISKCON Brampton, located near Dixie and Derry Roads.  Wow! What a turnout! Great food! Congratulations to all the hard-working devotees including Radha Gopinatha, Aindra, Nimai Nitai, and families. They now have a spacious facility with two levels, plenty of parking and plenty of potential to make it a centre for education, science and culture.

Worship is a small fraction of the building’s purpose. It is here to help people cultivate their spiritual consciousness.

In Toronto, I introduced to the crowd, Baladeva, aka Barry Brown, with his new book, Humanity: The World Before Religion, War and Inequality.

A Vandalistic Act

I made a police report on an act of vandalism today. It started off like this: “At approximately 10:40 a.m. today, Saturday, 20th of January, 2018, a man known to us, of medium build, about 6’1” in height, entered the temple room while I was sitting in the southwest corner area. He is white and has wavy/curly hair of brown-to-reddish colour. He wore brown pants and a sleeveless see-through top of purplish colour…”

After he entered the temple room today, he did a prostration before a statue of our guru and then wandered briefly about, making odd grunting sounds like those of a caveman. I got up and addressed him saying that he had to leave the premises...

“After he stepped outside, he picked up a rock (sometimes used to hold doors open) and tossed it into the arched, double-panelled window in the door, leaving the glass severely cracked and damaged. Looking out, I saw him going eastbound on Roxborough Street. I contacted another temple resident who called the police. They arrived about twenty minutes later. When asked by an officer, I indicated that we would like  to press charges for this act of vandalism. I would say that this individual is mentally unstable and unpredictable in action…”

In hindsight, the incident could have been worse. A rock could have been hurdled at one of our members and there could have been bloodshed; possible death, God forbid. This was my reflection as I returned from my night walk with Jaya. I peered at the glass, all cracked and fragmented.

May all prospects of illusion be shattered like that.

Air Weather

Radha from Argentina is a fairly recent arrival to Canada, and like all of us, since New Year’s, has gone through an interesting deep freeze.  She was sitting at the bottom of the stairs in our ashram, when I happened to make one of my rounds through the building.

“Oh, how are you?”

“I’m fine,” she said.

“You’re surviving the extremes?”

“Yes, but now it’s good.”

“It’s now in the plus-Celsius.”

“I like it,” she remarked, vouching for the conditions of the previous two days.

“Weather here in Canada is very dramatic. You never know.” I thought of the famous line from “Forrest Gump: “…life [is]…like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.’”

It surely is a merry-go-round, or maybe even a roller coaster. Remembering the weather I braved outdoors with Jaya, on a slow walk in the neighbourhood, I found the air, with the movement of wind, to possess such great prana, or life force. It reminded me of the Spring in Radha’s country, in Buenos Aires which means “clear air.”

Clear air has just got to be one of the greatest gifts of all. It’s taken for granted so much. Mentioned in the Gita as a major purifier, it is life giving, by nature. It is to be appreciated. It is something which we should be most grateful for.

Got A Call

Uber picked me up for a fast drive to Brampton, to a lawyer’s office, to sign papers for securing a new location for an ISKCON Centre.  It will be ours—a unit in a plaza on Steeles Avenue—and much larger than our current rental place on George Street.  The papers were signed and a grand opening happens on Sunday.

On my way to the lawyers, I received a call on my cell.  “Nevada” showed up on my screen.  Oh, that must be someone I met on last summer’s walk, I thought.

“Hello!”

“Yes, hello! I met you at the Shanti Ashram near Silver City and I need some advice.  I’ve been a Kali follower for three decades.  I was given a mantra by a guru.  Would you suggest I stick to that mantra to respect the Goddess?”

“Yes, I think I remember you.  It’s great that you have a mantra and you just might stick to it, but I’ll tell you, frankly, that I derive a lot of pleasure from the maha mantra.  You might add this mantra: Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.

“Here’s a definition of this mantra: ‘O awesome Creator, please allow me to be of blissful service to You and Your creation.’”

I don’t know that my caller, a woman, would take to heart my suggestion, but at least I had the privilege to give some advice to the powerful combination of the sounds in the great mantra of deliverance.

“It’s a mantra that expresses ‘giving’ as opposed to ‘taking’.”

She appreciated the talk.

“Call me anytime!” I said.

May the Source be with you!

Giriraj Swami

Giriraj Swami read and spoke from Srimad-Bhagavatam 2.8.6.

“The progress of culturing knowledge by the jnanis or the bodily gymnastics by the yogis are ultimately given up by the respective performers, but a devotee of the Lord cannot give up the service of the Lord, for he is ordered by his spiritual master. Pure devotees like Narada and Nityananda Prabhu take up the order of the spiritual master as the sustenance of life. They do not mind what becomes of the future of their lives. They take the matter very seriously, as the order comes from the higher authority, from the representative of the Lord, or from the Lord Himself.” SB 2.8.6 purport.

H.H. Jayapataka Swami Official Health Update
January 22, 2018
This message is to report the reason why Jayapataka Swami in the last few weeks has been in-and-out of hospitals. Several devotees from around the world have expressed their valid concerns so we hope to clarify the current situation and emphasize that all efforts are being made for ensuring that Maharaja’s health is maintained to its best possible capacity.
A brief recount of the latest happenings around Maharaja’s health condition: After he attended health check-ups in late last year (November), it was noticed a gradual decline in Maharaja’s condition (liver, kidneys, etc.). Specialist doctors recommended that he postponed his visit to South America due to the high risks involved in such a long journey given Maharaja’s already delicate health condition.

After a short visit to Bangladesh, Maharaja flew to Delhi to be assessed at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Science (ILBS) in Delhi. After discharge, he went to Chennai to continue evaluating different health treatments there. Meantime, Maharaja decided to attend the 40th anniversary of ISKCON Mumbai inauguration. In Mumbai, some complications presented and he was admitted at the Bhaktivedanta Hospital.

Presently Maharaja is considering the best options to improve his health and participate in the upcoming ISKCON Leadership Sanga (ILS) and Gaura Purnima festival this year. He is –as usual- alert, jovial and making decisions regarding his health and traveling. However, he has also expressed great discomfort and pain in public communication broadcasted in the last few days where he indicated that the best way to help him, with these serious health problems, is by strictly following the regulative principles and helping him to “make more devotees”. With his known heroic attitude, he wants to actively continue his preaching and performing his services for Srila Prabhupada and Lord Caitanya. Thus, we request everyone’s prayers for him to fulfill his purpose.

On behalf Maharaja’s Health Team,

Mahavaraha das (H.H. Jayapataka Swami traveling secretary)

The devotees of Govardhan Eco village (two hours outside of Mumbai) have re-created the original Vrindavan with duplicates of the seven principal temples. Along with Krishna’s pastimes in the forest and Fields. They are currently constructing a full size 75 foot high duplicate of the Madan Mohan Temple. It is made of solid red sandstone just like the original. Each block weighing over a ton. They also have a large modern crane to help lift the blocks. The blocks were all carved in Rajasthan.

The First Day Of Spring In Sri Vrindavan Dhama

Hare KrishnaBy Indradyumna Swami

Yesterday was the first day of spring in Vrindavan. Traditionally the deities in all the temples are dressed in yellow. Many Vraja-vasis alsowear yellow. Throughout the day I took a small group of devotees to all the main temples for darshan. There was a wonderful festive atmosphere everywhere we went. At one point a blissful parade passed by us, winding it's way through Vrindavan's small streets and lanes. Because it was also the appearance day of Srila Raghunath das Goswami we visited his samadhi at Radha Kunda and prayed for the spiritual strength to continue our preaching when we return to the west after Gaura Purnima. New Book release: ‘Bhaktivedanta Manor With Photography’
Sally Hedges Greenwood has visually captured the life and soul of Bhaktivedanta Manor in the UK and those that worshipped, celebrated, worked and lived there in 2004. Thirteen years later, in 2017, a collaboration with Radha Mohan das adds a further dynamic to the previously unpublished photographs, which succeeds in being both intimate and informative.
Sally was a mature student from Amersham College and was assigned to the Manor for her end of year project. Sally was previously the Managing Director of an exhibition company, so taking photographs was natural to her.
“Photographing at Bhaktivedanta Manor was an extraordinary experience for me in many ways”, explained Sally. “There was always a lot going on and I was accepted by the community right from the very beginning. I considered myself an ideal person to capture their moments”.

“The book may also be regarded as a souvenir for guests as well as devotees of Bhaktivedanta Manor. Put together in one volume, the photographs become a private, spiritual and personal photograph album”.

Bhaktivedanta Manor is many things: a temple, a home and a farm; it is unusual and interesting but above all it is a community whose contribution to their own and the wider community is extensive and inclusive.

Is Your Hut on Fire?
The only survivor of a shipwreck was washed up on a small, uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly for Krsna to rescue him, and every day he scanned the horizon for help, but none seemed forthcoming. Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of driftwood to protect himself from the elements, and to store his few possessions. One day, after scavenging for food, he arrived home to find his little hut in flames, the smoke rolling up to the sky. The worst had happened –everything was lost. He was stunned with grief and anger. “Krsna, how could you do this to me?“ he cried. Early the next day, however, he was awakened by the sound of a ship that was approaching the island. It had come to rescue him.
"How did you know I was here?” asked the weary man of his rescuers.
“We saw your smoke signal,” they replied.
It is easy to get discouraged when things are going bad. But we shouldn’t lose heart, because Krsna is at work in our lives, even in the midst of pain and suffering. Remember, next time your little hut is burning to the ground, it just may be a smoke signal that summons the grace of Krsna.
Bg 9.22 — But those who always worship Me with exclusive devotion, meditating on My transcendental form – to them I carry what they lack, and I preserve what they have.

Peace is not possible in a sectarian world
→ Servant of the Servant

I was never optimistic of inter-faith conferences. To me, personally speaking, it does not yield any significant outcomes. Leaders from various faiths’ convene but we do not see anything tangible transpire from these meetings. No doubt, it is a good thing in that we can appreciate differences and have a conversation. However, mere tolerance and acknowledgement of differences will not solve serious systemic problems in the religious world. Religion today believed by many is the number one reason for sectarian violence. Certainly, the leaders of that religion have to take responsibility for such sectarianism. Despite, social media and globalization, we are divided than ever.

On the corporate front, technology has enabled us to put our differences aside and work together across different cultures and platforms. This is a big win at least from an external perspective. However, this is possible only if one is ready to work in a secular environment. Secularism, however, does not promote personal beliefs in the workplace. Therefore, in that sense we have not solved sectarianism but only created one more - a sect of people apathetic or introvertive to their personal beliefs. Sectarianism can be really solved only if we allow, express and embrace external differences but adhere to universal deeper spiritual values. If inter-faith conferences can help with that idea, then I think it is successful.

One such value is to accept that God (regardless of His name) is the Supreme creator and owner of all things, people and land. Therefore, every individual should give up their false sense of ownership and offer their resources/bounty/money to God. If the leaders of the respective religions can go back to their respective congregations and preach this one idea – to give up ownership and dedicate the ownership and results of work to God – I think there will certainly be progress in the form of global peace.

Real inter-faith begins and ends by putting God (regardless of name) in the center and giving God all credit and offering all fruits to God and in this way co-exist peacefully (without sectarianism) in God consciousness.

Krsna-prasadam!?
→ KKSBlog

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, 16 December 2013, Sandton, South Africa, Srimad Bhagavatam 1.17.38)

Krsna is like the sun, maya is like darkness; wherever there is Krsna, maya’s influence cannot be there. So in this way, we do not have to fear. We do not have to think, “How will I conquer this illusory energy? I feel weak”. We should engage in more hearing and chanting, have more devotee association and take only Krsna-prasadam; no potato chips, nothing; just Krsna-prasadam.

You may say, “I offer my potato chips!”

Alright, but actually, they have already been offered to the factory workers. Actually to tell you the truth, if you’re cooking for Krsna and someone walks into the kitchen and just puts his hand straight into the pot and starts eating from it, will you still offer it to Krsna?

Well, there was a devotee, near Ermelo (in South Africa) who had a big chips factory and one time, they wanted me to go there to bless the factory. You know, “Swamiji, please come and bless our factory?” So, I went and blessed the factory and checked it out and I saw trucks of potatoes coming in and then being washed and chopped up by machines, and then the slices are dried and they go on the conveyor belt, and then there is a dip and they go through the hot oil and they come out brown and crispy. Then on the other side, as they come out, there is some machine that blows on hot spices onto the chips which stick on. The chips are still hot and spicy and there are the workers, “Chomp! Chomp! Chomp!” eating the chips! I was like, okay… so much for the chips! But if we take shelter of Krsna-prasadam, then everything is there, we are protected. There is no doubt of that…

Religion is often viewed as a force that sows divisions between people. But the world’s most prominent religious leaders have come together to present a different vision of how faith can work in the world. Byron Bay is hippie central through and through and so of course the Krishna Village Eco-Yoga Community would be based nearby. About an hour’s drive away, you’ll go from the breezy beaches or Byron to being nestled in rolling hills and lush greenery, with thick grass and fresh water creeks. This is Eungella, a town in New South Wales with a peaceful, back-to-nature vibe that’ll transform even the most plugged-in of urbanites, given enough time. Since one of my mantras is #lovelife, I thought, why not pay a visit to Krishna Village to get a taste of their joyous and mindful approach to life? Rich in Vaisnava Culture - The Town of Bharatpur (Album of photos)
Indradyumna Swami: Today we visited the town of Bharatpur in Rajasthan, just on the outskirts of Vrindavan. There we toured the Lohagarh fort built in the 18th century. Inside the fort are many beautiful old sandstone temples of Radha and Krsna, Ganga devi, Laxman ( the brother of Lord Ramacandra ) and numerous other temples with many ancient deities. The Lohagarh fort was built by a staunch Vaisnava King named Suraj Mal in the early 18th century. It is one of the strongest forts ever built in Indian history. Protected by deep moats on all sides, the fort was built to endure the repetitive invasions of the Mughal and British forces in the mid-1700’s in the region.
King Suraj Mal was a powerful king who ruled over the whole of Vraja and a greater part of North India in the 18th century. He was respected and loved by his subjects and was greatly feared by the Mughals. He was undefeated in battle. Songs and ballads of his chivalry and nobility, as well as his devotion to Radha and Krsna, are sung in different villages in North India. It was he who constructed the beautiful palace at Kusum Sarovara at the foot of Govardhana Hill. His samadhi is there.

As we walked around the town exploring the different temples, palaces and museums we were warmly greeted by many pious Vaisnavas. Everywhere people would call out, “Jaya Sri Radhe!” just like in Vrindavan. The whole day was a great adventure. As we left, I was in awe of the town and wondering how it was that in all these years I have never visited Bharatpur, which is so rich in Vaisnava culture and so close to Sri Vrindavan Dhama. Next weekend I plan to go back and take a large harinam party through Bharatpur to reciprocate with the warm welcome the people of Bharatpur extended to us.
