Youth Engagement- Interview with Daru Brahman Das (Social Worker, Care and Assistance, Mayapur) The thing about young people teenagers, in my experience, they won’t go anywhere they don’t feel wanted so we have to somehow convey that we really want and value young people. And has to be real because they can suss. You know, they are going through so many changes in their bodies, in their minds, relationships, their roles, their thinking, they need a place where they can just be and be real and be accepted. We really need to convey that to them, we really need to find the good qualities in the youth we have and really need to build on those, we need to be in a mood of appreciating people and we need to have respect for the Youth. The other thing is that we live in a community with very high ideals and most of us know or some of us know that we can’t reach those ideals immediately and the youth need to be accepted. So it’s the kind of double-edge situation, is difficult for people to live here knowing they don’t reach those ideals unless they feel accepted with their faults. We don’t need to focus on them but we need to give a place for members coming to you who can’t reach those high ideals, who are on the way to them, are interested in getting to them. We have to appreciate, especially in the youth, the fact that they choose to be here, they want to be part of Iskcon, they want to search Srila Prabhupada, they will have something in them that brings them here, whether is the history with their family or something they discovered, some realization etc.

Bhaktivedanta Manor’s spectacular Janmashtami festival attracts over 70,000 pilgrims to celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna on earth 5000 years ago. The festival demonstrates the spiritual variety of India’s ancient Vedic culture in all its glory. On arrival, visitors walk through the newly completed ‘New Gokul’ complex, Europe’s largest cow protection project, as they make their way to the colourful festival site. At the site, the main marquee stages cultural dances and musical extravaganzas. Over 50,000 pilgrims also eagerly queue in anticipation to greet Sri Sri Radha Gokulananda, the temple Deities, in the Manor’s exquisitely decorated shrine. Even the queue itself is a spiritual experience, as it makes its way along a flowered walk-way around the Manor’s lake, with pilgrims admiring the illuminated displays of Krishna’s pastimes. Throughout the day, kitchen staff is working solidly, preparing no less than 50,000 plates of prasadam (sacred vegetarian food) that is distributed freely to all pilgrims. A dedicated children’s area features a mini ‘main marquee’ where children perform carefully prepared shows and dances. An array of stalls and exhibits display spiritual art and literature, while there are also themed marquees providing lifestyle tips, such as a cruelty-free diet and a reduced environmental footprint.

Just last month our teams prepared hot meals for 17,000 in Trafalgar Square. In Glastonbury the Hare Krishna tent fed 15,000 hungry mouths over the festival, and the same team prepare 900 meals daily for the homeless and hungry students. Besides singing and dancing in public places, or distributing books, giving out blessed food or prasadam is the activity for which ISKCON is known. Today, 50 years after it started, that essential activity of cooking in large quantities has been raised to a fine art. It takes some feat of organisation to prepare food for thousands of people but it seems to be one thing that ISKCON does well. Here’s how the National Geographic Channel picked up on one such ‘mega-kitchen’ this week.

“Temple managers should make sure that for this Janmashtami season, they have splashed the ISKCON 50 posters, banners and the exhibition panels from the ISKCON 50 Expo prominently in your premises,” said Anuttama Dasa, GBC Minister for Communications, and a member of the International Executive Committee for ISKCON 50. “The Inspiration Series videos will hopefully bring home the importance of why we should all lead the way in educating the world about Srila Prabhupada, his achievements, how ISKCON has grown in the last 50 years and highlight our achievements.”

Dear devotees, today, on the disappearance of Srila Madhavendra Puri, the celebration of Sri Advaitacarya’s Shantipur festival, just three days shy of Gaura Purnima, after months of work, it is with deep gratitude and joy that we present to the devotee community our latest film entitled For Tomorrow. Our politicians pay lip service to it. Our technology is indifferent to it. Our commerce despises it. Nonetheless, it is the weightiest and most important thing to think about. Spirit. The living force. The soul. Srila Prabhupada wrote that society’s most vexing and painful problems could be redressed by simply realizing who we are: individual, eternal loving beings. Today, this type of knowledge is rarely found; those who practice this knowledge, rarer still. Can a coherent, stable, unified culture be created out of people of diverse traditions, languages, and religions? Can human beings go beyond their superficial differences and work together in a spirit of cooperation?

Incredibly inspirational talk by Shyamasundara Prabhu (ACBSP) about taking risks for Krishna. This was as a Pandava Sena event in London. Srila Prabhupada: So far I am concerned I always take risk for Krishna. I came here in your country risking my life. And still although I am physically unfit, I am trying to execute the orders of my Guru Maharaja as far as possible. Now, the sadhu’s qualification is he’s merciful, friendly… So the sadhus, they take the risk of becoming friendly and merciful to the fallen, conditioned souls, and they preach the message of Godhead. Therefore their mercy is required. They are merciful, by nature. By nature, they are merciful.

Amara ajnaya guru hana. Caitanya Mahaprabhu said… Because Caitanya Mahaprabhu is maha-vadanyavatara, most munificent incarnation to reclaim all the fallen souls. Ei rupe brahmanda bhramite kono bhagyavan jiva [Cc. Madhya 19.151]. So the guru’s business is to make everyone a bhagyavan, fortunate. That is guru’s business. The guru’s business is… They are so much sympathetic that one can get Krsna consciousness if he is fortunate. So guru’s labor, guru’s activity, is how to make people fortunate. That is wanted. Because without being fortunate one cannot understand Krsna. And without Krsna consciousness he cannot be relieved from this avidya-karma-samjna-sakti, material nature. Therefore it is the business of guru to make everyone fortunate. So how he can make everyone fortunate? That is… Caitanya Mahaprabhu advises that amara ajnaya guru hana. You follow the principles of Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s instruction first of all. Sri-krsna-caitanya prabhu-nityananda, sri-advaita gadadhara srivasadi-gaura-bhakta-vrnda. You just take their mercy. Then you become guru. And then what is your business? His business is yare dekha tare kaha krsna upadesa [Cc. Madhya 7.128]. So guru-krsna. Guru makes the people fortunate, and then the people become Krsna conscious, and then he becomes fortunate. This is the process of Krsna consciousness movement. Everyone is advised to become guru.

Much has been and will be said about Brahmananda Prabhu’s extraordinary love for and service to Srila Prabhupada. His attachment to Srila Prabhupada was so great that any association with him, whether by vani or vapuh, markedly increased my loving feelings for Srila Prabhupada. Brahmananda Prabhu is with Srila Prabhupada, engaged in his service, and that’s all I—or any of us—could ask for. And knowing that Brahmananda Prabhu is with Srila Prabhupada is an added impetus and incentive—an added attraction. Brahmananda Prabhu, may your example of dedication to your spiritual master and kindness to others inspire us in our service to Srila Prabhupada and his devotees.
