Art & Words Duet: Day 11
The Return
Part Three - Mysterious Wish
(note: this piece is fiction)

One morning my mom shook me awake, whispering, "Honey, it's time. Your father."

Unquestioningly, with bleary eyes, I jumped out of bed and followed my mother down the hall to my father's room. There was spiritual chanting of God's names, called kirtan, going on in my dad's room. The past several days this kirtan had been going on twenty-four hours a day, non-stop. When I entered the dimly lit room, my father's bed was surrounded by several soft and somber faces. Suddenly, I was struck by how beautiful my father was.

So beautiful.

My father was lit by lamps that cast pools of soft bronze light.  He wore a flower garland that encircled his entire body. He was emaciated. His bones were protruding from his elbows and legs, I seemed to see his thigh bones through his thin cotton cloth. His face had become all angles, his eyes sunken into his head. His skin had lost its luster.

My father's body was deteriorating and yet his beauty was growing. So many people, from Bengali villagers to travel-monks, had come by in steady streams to see him, to offer their respects, to reminisce, to offer appreciation. Some gave him gentle massages, some sang for him, some prepared medicine or oat water. Some would read to him for hours on end from scripture. My father would receive the presence of each person with folded palms and with a smile that completely disarmed me. In all my life I had never seen my father smile in such a way. He was beautiful. He seemed to evoke deep, profound love of people he had never even met before.

Who was this man?

For the past couple weeks I had been quiet and kept my distance, and my father seemed to be receiving other people more than my mom or me. We mainly helped the nurses with their services. We seemed to understand that dad was reconnecting with a whole other life, a whole other worldwide community that he needed to find closure with in his final days.

That fateful morning, mom and I entered my father's room and immediately his gaze turned to both of us. He smiled that beautiful smile, and suddenly my chest filled with heat and tears stung my eyes.

Stay strong, I reminded myself.

Mom and I approached his bed and he looked at us, his eyes luminous. He looked at my mother and murmured so softly we had to lean in to hear him over the music, "I love you." She began to weep and weep and he just looked at her. Then he turned to me and said with deep conviction, "I love you."

"Dad, I love you," I said, the unabashed tears flowing down my face. I wanted to ask him so many questions. I wanted to go for a walk in the park, like we used to do almost every day, even in the snow, even in the rain. I wanted to hug him. I wanted him to stay.

He looked at me lucidly, thoughtfully. Then he said, "Eliza,"

My stomach dropped. His tone of voice was so grave. I took a breath and leaned in further.

"Promise me one day you will lead kirtan."

Kirtan? Lead kirtan? What was going on right now, this singing with those instruments? I don't sing. I don't even know what kirtan really is. I can barely follow the words. Lead? Lead kirtan? Just one kirtan? Or all the time? This all whirled through my head, the thoughts jumbling and bumping into each other.

"Promise me."

There could be only one response. I nodded.

My dad smiled and moved his hand towards mine, and I took his frail hand. I would hold his hand until he left this world.

Dawn filtered into our room, the birds began to sing, and more and more people filled the space. The kirtan continued nonstop. Confusion and fear whirred through me, and I found myself listening to the kirtan, wondering why, why, why would my father give this to me as his dying wish.

At one point, the music rose, the voices rose in a tumultuous sound. My father's eyes were closed, his breath shallow and irregular. His lips were faintly moving to the holy name being sung, and then, he breathed one last time, a big sigh.

Tears were pouring down almost every face, even the wise swamis. Where my father had once been,  giant, empty chasm ripped open wide in my heart. But then when the kirtan rose in volume, I had a curious experience. That hole filled with the holy name being sung, like warm liquid being poured into a vessel. I felt safe, whole, protected, loved. I was absolutely astonished with the realization that my father not only wanted me to experience this, but to give this to others. Later on, this feeling would fade away and that raw emptiness returned. But in those moments I understood. I understood.

How is Māyā-devī so Damn Clever???
→ The Enquirer

QUESTION: How would Maya devi be knowing how to enslave us to her? Paramatma is in our heart, and therefore knows us perfectly. Does she have access to that, in some way, or does she monitor our behavior, and act to that, or is there some other way i haven’t conceived of? Perhaps you can shed some light on this. I would appreciate it very much.

6a00e39332b5c5883401761649c96a970cYou’re assuming that its particularly difficult to “enslave” us. In truth, however, it’s not. It doesn’t require any special genius.

Nor is it an act of “enslaving” – that is another mistake.

Please read a book I have written, translating the Third Canto of Bhāgavatam. The name of the book is Varāha, Vidura, and Kapila. You can get it from my website. In there, when you read Kapila’s conversation with his mother, you’ll find everything you need to know to answer these questions.

To summarize:

We are very simple creatures, we simply want happiness. We will fly towards anything that we think provides happiness. So it is not at all difficult to “capture” anyone – just give them what they think will make them happy, and they are yours.

Māyā provides us happiness, because she is so beautiful and has so much energy to create so many wondrous situations in which we can experience happiness. She does not “enslave” us, she serves us.

Attracted to her, we enter into her. In that copulation, we experience oneness with her. She generates names and forms for us, and we experience oneness with them. She generates a “subtle body” for us – a sense of consciousness, a sense of identity, a sense of emotions, and a power of comprehension – and a “gross body” – senses that experience, and senses that interact. We experience oneness with these, but in truth they are her. So everything in our senses, mind, thoughts, identity and sentience is all factually in her. Therefore she knows our every desire and morphs continually to fulfill it.

The only problem with all of this is that each individual consciousness has different objects of love. There is no unification of purpose and emotion among the individuals. What makes one happy causes another to suffer. Therefore existence in Māyā by nature cannot be flawless or perfect. When we realize this, we gradually find flaws in Māyā’s beauty – lose attraction to her, stop seeing her as the source of actual happiness. Then we become eligible to move towards mokṣa, liberation – and potentially begin an existence in a different sort of māyā, one where there is unification of purpose and emotion centered on love for the core root of all consciousness, Krishna.

Srila Prabhupad’s Appearance Day is a very special day for all ISKCON devotees as they joyfully glorify their eternal saviour Srila Prabhupada on His appearance day.

Srila Prabhupada was sent by the Lord to fulfill Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s prediction- Prtvithe ache yata nagaradi grama, sarvatra pracara haibe more nama: In every town and village of the world, My name will be heard.

Srila Bhakti Vinoda Thakura wrote in his Sajjona-tosani, “Soon there will be a time when the chanting of Krishna’s name will be heard in England, France, Russia, Germany and America.”

Srila Prabhupada appeared on Nanadotsava. Nandotsava means: Nanda Maharaja’s huge festival celebrating Krishna’s birth. Nanda Maharaja dressed in luxurious garments and distributed profuse charity to everyone in his kingdom. He gave away opulent cloth and ornaments and two million richly decorated cows to the brahmanas. Vraja was alive with vibrations of Vedic hymns and beautiful decorations and everyone was experiencing unending happiness. Bursting with bliss, the Vrajavasis expressed their joy by throwing butter, yogurt and ghee all around.
Srila Prabhupada appeared to fulfill the mission of Lord Krishna. Srila Prabhupada grew up as a pure devotee of the Lord and distributed Krishna Consciousness everywhere.
Srila Prabhupada made a perfect appearance, led a perfect life and had a perfect departure. Srila Prabhupada lives forever through his books. This legacy will always provide the devotees with Lord Caitanya katha and teach everyone to chant the Maha mantra.

Hearing a celestial voice that the eighth child of Devaki would kill the demoniac King Kamsa, he killed all the children born from Devaki. Mother Devaki was in deep distress during her seventh pregnancy because she felt the child would be divine in nature.

To allay the fear of Devaki, Lord Krshna called Yogamaya and told her to transfer the child to the womb of Rohini, another wife of Vasudeva living in Gokula.

When Garga Muni went to Gokula, Rohini met the saint and he said, “Your child’s father is your husband Vasudeva and He will grow into a strong and beautiful divine boy.” After the birth of the child, Garga Muni again visited Gokula and named Him Rama (one who brings piety and prosperity). Garga Muni also said that He would grow very strong and become famous as Bala as well.

The appearance of lord Balarama was very nicely observed by the devotees in Cairns.

Ambarish’s first donation to ISKCON.
Ramesvara das: We were getting letters from a person named Alfred Ford and nobody had the slightest idea that he was “the” Ford family! So we were getting some letters and Krsna Kanti found out about it. At that time Krsna Kanti was still working at Spiritual Sky and he wrote this Alfred Ford a letter at his ski resort in Hawaii and asked him to please give a donation. “I’m trying to start a tape ministry to record all the lectures of Srila Prabhupada. There is no system at all.” And Alfred Ford gave a donation and Golden Avatar was started in 1972. We bought the Uher tape recorders, we bought whatever equipment there was. This was a monumental thing. From that day on Prabhupada’s servant or secretary had to carry a tape recorder and every single thing Prabhupada said was recorded. That was a major event for the history of the world. It ended up by 1977 when Prabhupada said we could use his talks, his classes and his lectures to produce books. It’s a very major event. It started in 1972 with this donation, the very first donation Ambarish ever gave ISKCON went to pay for Prabhupada’s voice to be recorded and preserved for as long as there is a Krsna consciousness movement. That is an important event in the history of our movement and Prabhupada approved it. Obviously he allowed his disciples to carry that tape recorder and stick that microphone in front of him and if it was annoying to him he would have mentioned it.

ISKCON Hungary Steps Up to Help Middle Eastern Refugees
ISKCON Hungary has also risen to the challenge, and now distributes hundreds of plates of freshly cooked meal on two locations near the two main train stations. The prasadam is always being accepted with gratitude by the refugees, most of whom have not touched freshly cooked food for weeks. Devotees also provide them with clothes, shoes, diapers, soap and other items to help them maintain their health and personal hygiene. “Helping needy people without discrimination is considered to be a moral duty by Krishna-devotees.” Declares Gandharvika Prema Dasi ISKCON Hungary’s spokesperson. “Above all and most importantly we are all equal spirit souls, compared to which our specific religions, skin colors and nationalities are secondary. According to our scriptures it is our duty to respect and to take care of the people coming to our home, no matter what their backgrounds are.

The residents of Kurukshetra, the Kurukshetra Development Board and all of us are grateful to the ISKCON Society that you have performed this task here- this temple, this Institution which will be a very great Memorial, a very great Landmark, a very big project that will make a mark for Kurukshetra in this whole world. Through this Project, Kurukshetra’s name will appear on the map of the Whole World. You might have seen several temples, but this is one where both God and his Devotee are there. Krishna is also there and so is Arjuna. This gives us messages that if you want to become a devotee, become one like Arjuna. This is a great message.

Gopal Krishna Maharaj is presently there at Ahmedabad. He just returned from his two month tour of Russia, the USA, and Canada for the program at Kurukshetra, where he installed the Deity of Ananta Shesha in the ground below the proposed Krishna Arjuna temple, construction on which will begin shortly (plans were already approved by the local Government – the land was also given by the Haryana State Government - the State in which Kurukshetra is situated), and changed his program out of concern for Jasomatinandan Prabhu’s health.

Srila Prabhupada: “But you are not a woman; you are a Vaishnava.”
One of the loving exchanges Yamuna had on several occasions with Srila Prabhupada related to his teasing her, or as she used to say, “trying to get a rise out of her,” by quoting the Chanakya Pandit verse, “Never trust a politician or a woman.” Another variation was when he would purposely make a statement about women being less intelligent. This may have started in San Francisco, but specifically she mentioned that it occurred in London, then in Madras and Bombay. Once, she was riding in a car with him, and he quoted the Chanakya verse and then turned around to look directly at her with an almost impish smile on his face. When she didn’t react, he repeated it and looked around again in the same way. Yamuna simply smiled and said, “Yes, Srila Prabhupada, you are certainly correct.” Then some time passed, and Srila Prabhupada praised her to show that he in fact saw no distinction on the basis of body, but saw her as an eternal spirit soul sincerely engaged in practicing and promulgating Krishna Consciousness. Yamuna: I had numerous exchanges which illustrated Srila Prabhupada’s demeanor and mood with regard to my position as a woman. However, one such series of exchanges is what I call the Chanakya Pandit episodes. I was present on four occasions when Srila Prabhupada repeated the Chanakya adage: “Never trust a politician or a woman.” On each occasion, Srila Prabhupada looked me in the eye to see my response. On the last occasion, in Bombay in 1973, he quoted the Chanakya shloka again, heartily laughing in front of a small group of men. Then he said, “What do you think, Yamuna?” Immediately I retorted: “Of course, it is true, Srila Prabhupada,” whereupon he became grave, looked at me with great feeling, and said, “But you are not a woman; you are a Vaishnava.”
