For the Kirtan Connection course that I teach, we have a private blog where students write a post every week and comment on their fellow students' posts. This week our topic was kirtan etiquette and pride. I just finished commenting on every post.

I feel like I've just emerged from a washing machine. I feel cleansed inside and out, as if I have received instructions from my spiritual master on the art of leading and participating in kirtan. I am humbled by the innate wisdom of each and every student.

In this course, we have a woman who received spiritual initiation in 1979 and is now returning to the Krishna conscious movement.

A spunky thirteen-year-old and a powerful thirty-two-year-old gurukuli.

A professional modern dancer who has visited the Bhakti Center only once before, and participated in kirtan possibly four times.

A lady who is dedicated to Krishna Consciousness and is a registered member of a Native American tribe. She comes down from Boston every week and shares her beautiful culture with us.

Two sincere and inspired yoginis - one who teaches and practices at The Bhakti Center and the other one who has traveled to India with Raghunath.

A soft-hearted woman dedicated to truth and serving Krishna.

I am in awe by the beauty of each student, so grateful to be serving each one. I believe that they are probably teaching me way more about kirtan than I will ever teach them. Thank you, Srila Prabhupad, for granting me the association of these beautiful people.

Translation
The sound incarnation of Lord Kṛsna, the Supreme Soul [i.e. Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam], enters into the heart of a self-realized devotee, sits on the lotus flower of his loving relationship, and thus cleanses the dust of material association, such as lust, anger and hankering. Thus it acts like autumnal rains upon pools of muddy water.

To establish Sridhama Mayapur, the audharya dhama, as the World Headquarters of the Hare Krishna Movement and bring it to the forefront and attention of the entire world, as well as to show our love and gratitude to Srila Prabhupada for this most rare benediction and gift he has given us in the form of the ISKCON society, we all need to work together to make our acharyas’ vision become manifest. Srila Prabhupada said that the temple was already built, but we must take this opportunity if we want to be the instruments and receive the transcendental credit, or someone else will.
HG Ambarisa Prabhu is the main Chairman of the entire TOVP project and will be visiting Toronto as one of the few temples that he will personally be visiting in North America. Along with him will be HG Jananivas Prabhu, who has not stepped out of India for 45 years, but has now done so. He has brought with him Lord Nityananda’s shoes and Lord Narasimha’s helmet from Mayapur.Together, they are leading a team of devotees on a tour and ISKCON Brampton will be one of their stops this Sunday during our Special TOVP Love Feast For All.

Hare Krishna! Serving Krishna by Serving Tulasi
Srila Jiva Gosvami, arguably one of the greatest spiritual scholars in the history of religion, said that one does not really accept God unless one accepts his inconceivable nature. In other words, if we try to limit God in some way, then in effect we have eliminated his true nature. In the same way, how the Lord’s internal potency for performing pastimes in this world expands as the pure devotee Tulasi, an eternal consort of Krishna, is also inconceivable. Devotees simply accept her and worship her with joy in their hearts. And if she blesses them by growing luxuriously, as she has in Vancouver, that, Srila Prabhupada wrote, is evidence of their sincere devotion.

Hare Krishna! Family ties
Srila Prabhupada explains that we are indebted in so many ways. We are indebted if we take milk from the cow. We are indebted to other living beings, demigods, family, parents and to everyone who has made a sacrifice for us. We are indebted to our teachers for whatever knowledge we have taken from them. Like this, we are indebted, indebted, indebted! Therefore, we have a duty to repay. It is a karmic duty and not just a moral duty! If we do not repay that duty then there are reactions.

Hare Krishna! Miraculous Meetings!
We had an amazing sankirtan experience last week. While traveling we met a man who got a ‘Chant and Be Happy,’ read it, became convinced, and started chanting – all by himself. Never been to a temple, never met a devotee. He just made up his own beads from reading and now chants everyday. Gives us great faith in power of Srila Prabhupada’s book. TOVP Tour Diary Day 66: Chicago TOVP Presentation
- TOVP.org

On Saturday, May 16th we left Bloomington, Illinois for the Chicago temple. However, along the way we paid a surprise visit to His Holiness Radhanath Swami who was staying nearby.

Arriving at the temple, we set up our TOVP presentation banners and prepared for the Sunday program. The Chicago temple is a very large building and houses the presiding Deities of Sri Sri Radha Kishor Kishori, Sri Sri Gaur Nitai, and Jagannatha, Baladeva and Subhadra. The congregation of devotees is very large and we expected a good crowd.

Devotees started arriving for the evening arati and darshan of the Padukas and Sitari, after which the Temple President, Nityananda Pran prabhu, introduced the TOVP Team. Radha Jivan and Jananivas spoke again about the importance of Mayapur Dhama and building the TOVP. Pledges began to come in and by the program’s end close to $300,000 was pledged. After a puspa abhisheka to the Padukas and Sitari prasadam was served.

Miraculous Meetings
→ Tattva - See inside out

We’re back on the road, traveling the country for the next four months. Every town has its flavour, and every day is unique. It’s quite a task to stop someone in their tracks, cut through the myriad of thoughts, penetrate the bubble of their life and begin a dialogue about deeper subject matter. Some people naturally tune in to the concept of ancient wisdom, while others are sceptical, uninterested and otherwise-engaged. Either way we always have a laugh, a smile and learn something from each other!

Every day we experience a small miracle. Last week, on our way to Torquay, the driver lost his bearings and we accidently parked up in Paignton, a small neighbouring town. As we got onto the high street, we realised we were in the wrong place! I rushed to the car park to fetch the van while the rest of the team waited on the street corner. One of our budding monks, Nikhil, was convinced we had come there for a reason (he was the driver who brought us to the wrong place!). In his two-minute ‘window of opportunity’ he decided to approach the first pedestrian and explain what we were doing.

As he turned to a random passer-by, the man stopped almost instantaneously. “We are the monks, traveling the country and teaching people about meditation and spirituality” Nikhil said. With a sparkle in his eye and a look of disbelief the man replied: “Amazing! I’ve been looking for you guys!” He went on to explain how he had received one of our books, read it cover to cover, and begun practicing mantra meditation… all by himself. He has never had any contact with a Hare Krishna community, temple, or practicing devotee. He simply read the book, became convinced and proceeded to string his own beads. Now he carries those beads with him everywhere he goes, quietly whispering the Hare Krishna mantra to himself.

So there was indeed a reason why we stopped in Paignton that day. A miraculous meeting, likely orchestrated by providence. Here’s a short interview with James, without doubt a very special soul:

Achieve Success with the Help of Devotees, May 17, The Bhakti House, Charlottesville, Virginia
Giriraj Swami

UVABYC“The wisdom of the devotee is that he bows down to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. If one can do that it is special mercy. That is achieved through reception of the dust of the lotus feet of the Lord’s pure devotee. Generally that means to follow the instructions of the devotee. One cannot fully understand the science of transcendence unless one is a follower of a pure devotee. That is why the sacred texts themselves say that one cannot achieve success by simply studying books. Therefore it is said that one should study with the help of a devotee.”

Just Go On Chanting
→ Japa Group

"You have to chant with quality. So there is a difference, that I have to admit. And I know I’m not at the apex. But I chant as the ultimate habit of my life with complete obedience to the sixteen-round quota and with adherence to Prabhupada’s blessing on me and my vow to him. Just go on chanting through the rest of your days and try the best you can."

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, 27 May 2015, Sydney, Australia, Srimad Bhagavatam 7.10.23)

kingsday2015Whenever we take birth in this world, immediately we are indebted. We are indebted to our parents who have brought us into this world and made arrangements for caring for us. We are indebted to the demigods because they are providing for us. Light, air and food are all provided by the demigods. We are indebted to the forefathers because they have built up so many things and worked so hard to create all facilities for us.

It is said that if one owes money to another and one dies, then in the next life, one has to come back and pay back four times the amount – so with interest! So these things are arranged like that. Also, it is said that if someone owes you money, you will have to come back to receive it unless you write it off. So at the time of death, it is better to just write everything off.

But for a devotee, (Srimad Bhagavatam 11.5.41)

devarṣi-bhūtāpta-nṛṇāṁ pitṟṇāṁ, na kiṅkaro nāyam ṛṇī ca rājan

sarvātmanā yaḥ śaraṇaṁ śaraṇyaṁ, gato mukundaṁ parihṛtya kartam,

A devotee is no longer a debtor. He has paid back all this debts! But one may ask, “What about my parents? Shouldn’t I care for my parents?” Yes, you should care for your parents by serving Krsna because the way to care for parents is by serving Krsna. You may care for their bodies by sending money and so on, but if you give them Krsna and even if they are not getting Krsna directly from you, if you serve Krsna then your parents will share in the benefit; they get eternal benefit. So why should we work so hard to give them temporary benefit if they can get eternal benefit. Therefore, one should not interrupt his devotional service to take care of their parents; it is not beneficial!

In Navadvip, there was Shyamlal who had joined Srila Prabhupada. Prabhupada had sent him to Calcutta to assist Brahmananda and Gargamuni in collecting funds for Mayapur. Then a message came that his father was very ill and his father was dying, and he was asked to go home immediately. And Prabhupada said, “No, don’t go. There is no need!”

SP_seatedSo in Prabhupada’s time, it was like that because in Prabhupada’s presence, everything was very transcendental. Since then, it has come down and now material considerations are also taken into account but in Prabhupada’s presence, it was, “You are engaged in devotional service and that is the greatest welfare work and there is no need for anything else.” That was the spirit and in Prabhupada’s presence, everyone was pulled up to a very high standard of transcendental life.

We are not saying that we cannot give mercy to our family; that we can do. We are not saying that we cannot associate with our family but still, our life is now with Krsna. Krsna’s associates are our real family. We are now in a new family lineage. We have now taken a second birth in the acutyagotra, the family lineage of Acutya, the infallible family lineage which is Krsna’s family lineage.

In Vrindavan, when I was the temple president, I used to buy land. In India, there is a tradition that on any official document, they want you to state not only the name of the person who was involved but also his father’s name so you can see the family lineage. And instead of the father’s name, one could give their guru’s name and this is legally accepted! Whenever you are asked for your father’s name, you can give your spiritual master’s name because it is accepted as a bonafide relationship!

So that is culture actually. That is correct. The law of man is in line with the law of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Krsna has laws within the universe and according to these laws, we have our duties, we have rights and if we are not adhering to these duties, there is karma. But one who takes to Krsna’s service is released from all kinds of duties…

ISKCON South Africa Reports a Year of Inspiring Achievements
→ ISKCON News

In its recent annual report, ISKCON South Africa – which has fifteen centers and five Govinda’s restaurants – let readers know about a string of inspiring achievements throughout the nation. Many of these came from new centers. In Stellenbosch, a town in the Western Cape, devotees acquired a three-bedroom house in the suburbs to serve as an ashram for three brahmacharis and three students.
