Hare Krishna! From Morality to Spirituality
Until people gain the spiritual inspiration that underlies truly good behavior, attempts to legislate morality will inevitably fail. Daily news reports of things like corruption, nepotism, favoritism, and infidelity have us fed up. Politicians say, “Education in ethics and values is the solution. ” But don’t most people already know right from wrong? I think so. They just feel they’ll fare better in life without following moral codes. And exhortation by moralists or legislation by politicians doesn’t inspire them to think differently.

$350,000 for the TOVP pledged during Rama-navami at New Nilacala Dhama
Sikhi Mahiti introduced the TOVP Team and handed the program over to Radha Jivan. Radha Jivan then spoke, intertwining various stories from the Ramayana and made his appeal to the devotees to pledge for the TOVP construction. Understanding that the devotees there are also fundraising for a new temple on the property, he encouraged devotees to make a sacrifice for the TOVP also and, in a spirit of cooperation and love, himself pledged $51,000 for the Philadelphia project. He told the devotees they could wait until the Philadelphia project was complete before starting their TOVP payments. Devotees were so touched and moved by his sincereity and mood that $300,000 was pledged that evening which, including the Thursday night pledges, totaled almost $350,000. A wonderful prasadam feast was then served to all the Vaishnavas.

Srila Prabhupada: O my Lord! Persons who chant the holy names of your Lordship are far, far advanced in spiritual life, even if born in families of dog-eaters. Such chanters have undoubtedly performed all kinds of austerities and sacrifices, bathed in all sacred places, and finished all scriptural studies. (Srimad-Bhagavatam, 3.33.7)

Berjaya Foundation donate pick-up truck for Food For Life services
→ ISKCON Malaysia

BY SIMHESWARA DASA

KUALA LUMPUR - In the Chandogya Upanishad (7.26.2) it is said:
ahara-suddhau sattva-suddhih sattva-suddhau dhruvanusmritih smriti-labhye sarvagranthinam
vipramokshas tasmai mridita-kasayaya tamasah param darsayati bhagavan sanat-kumarah.

"By performance of yajna one's eatables become sanctified, and by eating sanctified foodstuffs one's very existence becomes purified. By the purification of existence finer tissues in the memory become sanctified, and when memory is sanctified one can think of the path of liberation. In this way Lord Sanatkumara revealed the spiritual truth, which is on the farther shore of the world of darkness."

ISKCON Malaysia through the Food for Life services around the country distributed a total of 250,000 vegetarian meal prasadam plates for the year 2014.

In recognition of our services the Berjaya Foundation donated a pick-up truck in conjunction with the birthday of the founder Tan Sri Vincent Tan on 28 March 2015.

We are also happy to announce the setting up of Krishna TV Malaysia by our farm volunteer Mr. Peter Quest.

Bhakti Vaibhava Maharaja talks about Srila Prabhupada’s vision about the scientific basis of Krishna consciousness and that once we are able to explain this properly, people from all over the world will come to Mayapur. And Mayapur would become a huge city with its own airport, etc. Srila Prabhupada has simply revived and expanded on the original vision of our predecessor acharyas.

BY SIMHESWARA DASA

KUALA LUMPUR - I just returned to Malaysia after my pilgrimage to Sridham Mayapur where the Temple of the Vedic Planetarium (TOVP) is being constructed and scheduled to be open in 2022. Many Malaysian devotees were also there to celebrate the appearance of His Divine Grace Srila Jayapataka Swami, an ISKCON Guru and Governing Body Commission member. The TOVP will be the 1st largest for dome diameter of 177ft and 2nd highest temple after St. Peter's

Way To Go

The champak tree becomes your companion when you do that goom-goom walk around the temple.  In no way does this mean that the tree walks with you.  I wish.  What I’m saying is that a number of these fragrant flowering trees are planted along the path.

There are also ashok trees like the ones you read about in “the Ramayana” where Sita is held captive in such a grove.

I'm also reminded that at the opening of this temple (the 80's) when the grounds where less lush and trees not so full, Nelson Mandela walked these steps.

Our Ratha Yatra, Festival of Chariots, Durban's 26th, took the route along the usual beach front passing by all the major hotels.  On this long weekend (Easter) many people become exposed to the chariots, the deities of Jagannatha and the mantra, Hare Krishna.  At the culmination of the chariot pulling the fest ends up at an expansive aria, the former Durban drive-in movie facility.

In my opinion, like other chariots festivals I've attended, the spirit of participants is up, yet the quality sound is not what it could be to draw in the crowds.  Musically, it has a way to go.

Lucky!

I consider myself a lucky chap.  I have an understudy for a director here.  Yes, we are pulling together two dramas for the festival this week and when I get tired, needing some choreography assistance I have someone to depend on.

Prem Vikas just turned 29 yesterday and he's a great talent on the stage.  He hails from Pretoria, the capital city of South Africa.  In fact, a number of people in our cast are from Pretoria.

In reflection on productions done since January of this year, it seems to be a consequence of divine arrangement that a younger group are stepping up to the task of directing.  I can think of Kish who helped me tremendously in India. Stage presence he also has being a member of the kirtan band, “The Mayapuris.”  Madava of Australia has great possibilities as a director, being fine in the dance and acting department.

Hmmm! What else about today that is making me feel lucky? Well, lunch today was with Indradyumna Swami, also a former surfer (refer to yesterday's blog).  Having this sanga, companionship is shaping me.

My advice is “Seek good company that enthuses your spirit.”  Make it a priority!

I am lucky.

May the Source be with you!

To Be Endorsed

It takes less than 2 minutes to walk at my normal speed, one lap or one revolution, around the temple building.  In one way it provides a sense of eternity, like you never reach a destination.  I was just curious to know.  At this rate during my precious time for mantra meditation, “Just how many times do I go around this sacred edifice?” was my question.  If my math brain doesn't deceive me, then I can be looking to doing sixty times around on an average two hour jaunt in a day.

Unfortunately, today was not one of those days.  Hours are monopolized by drama practice, but for a special treat, lunch with another monk.  Bhakti Chaitanya Swami resides here in South Africa.  It was interesting to find out that in his teen – to twenty years – he was a surfer. He and his buddies lived for that special wave from the ocean blue.  Life was simple.  “You might live in your vehicle, sleep in it.”  He then implied that you wait for that special dream wave to come from the ocean blue.

That would be ecstasy.

Like many of us in our sixties surfing the wave is out of the question.  But walking a few rounds about the Chatsworth temple is quite doable even at ten revolutions per day.  I endorse it for anyone.

May the Source be with you!

Love Me—Love my Dog, March 29, Dallas
Giriraj Swami

Prabhupada-in-MelbourneGiriraj Swami read and spoke from Srimad-Bhagavatam 2.3.23.

“In other words, Lord Sri Krsna is the property of His pure, unconditional devotees, and as such only the devotees can deliver Krsna to another devotee; Krsna is never obtainable directly. Lord Caitanya therefore designated Himself as gopi-bhartuh pada-kamalayor dasa-dasanudasah, or “the most obedient servant of the servants of the Lord, who maintains the gopi damsels at Vrndavana.” A pure devotee therefore never approaches the Lord directly, but tries to please the servant of the Lord’s servants, and thus the Lord becomes pleased, and only then can the devotee relish the taste of the tulasi leaves stuck to His lotus feet. In the Brahma-samhita it is said that the Lord is never to be found by becoming a great scholar of the Vedic literatures, but He is very easily approachable through His pure devotee.” — SB 2.3.23 purport.

Indradyumna Swami: Attendance was down at this year’s Durban Ratha Yatra because of heavy rain. Nevertheless, thousands braved the wet weather to enjoy 4 days of transcendental festivities. A high point was when national television came and interviewed us. The interviewer, a young lady who dressed in a sari for the occasion, chanted and danced with us in great jubilation before the camera. Such is the mercy of Lord Jagannatha, Lord of the universe.

Second Generation Devotee Conferred With A National Legal Award In Kuala Lumpur
→ ISKCON Malaysia

BY MATHURA LILESVARI DEVI DASI

ORIGINAL ARTICLE

Hema with her teammates at the award ceremony

KUALA LUMPUR - It was indeed a proud moment last Friday, 27 March 2015 at the Inter-Continental Hotel, Kuala Lumpur when the Malaysia Law Awards for the Best Insurance In-House Team of the Year was conferred to a team from Sun Life Malaysia Assurance Berhad, a 49% subsidiary of Sun Life Financials of Canada. This team of lawyers is led by Sun Life’s General Counsel, Hema Latha Sinnakaundan or better known in the devotee circle as Hema Kanti Devi Dasi, a disciple of HH Jayapataka Swami. Hema was nominated as the Best In-House Lawyer at the awards.

The award was especially sweet, significant and inspiring because Hema who was introduced to ISKCON at the age of 8 grew up in ISKCON, in the temple. Hema remembers waking up as early as 4am every day in order to take turns with her brother Raj Kumar in performing mangal arati at home which will be followed by reading from the Bhagavad Gita and the Nectar of Devotion, before they get ready to go to school. Memorizing Sanskrit slokas at a young tender age helped Hema develop a strong memory power which helped her do well in her studies.

Hema in her school uniform with the temple matajis

Hema was only 10 when her mum, a single parent decided to send Hema’s brother to the Vrindavan Gurukula and move in to the local ISKCON temple together with Hema, as a full time devotee taking on deity and cooking services. Her mother, Danistha Devi Dasi however was clear that besides being trained in Krsna Consciousness, Hema has to be educated materially as well. Hema was known in school as the Hare Krsna girl. The Hare Krsna girl that later become the head prefect of the school. Leadership qualities were clearly inborn. Hema would go to school after attending mangal arati at the temple and she would not be shy to put on her tilak and even hand over devotional cassettes to her school bus driver and have the whole bus ride to school listening to tunes of the Maha Mantra.

While staying in the temple, Hema was responsible for a set of duties which included plucking Tulasi leaves and flowers, making Tulasi garlands and flower garlands for the deities, polishing the arati paraphernalia, sweeping and cleaning the temple hall, etc. She was also very active in stage shows during ISKCON festivals. These services helped in developing her sense of responsibility, her confidence level and self-esteem at a young age, which came in very handy during her court going days and currently in her boardroom and corporate days.

Hema Kanti Devi Dasi receiving blessings from HH Jayapataka Swami

At 14, Hema and mum moved in with her uncle Deva Deva Raj Das and maternal aunt Sakhya Rasa Devi Dasi, also disciples of HH Jayapataka Swami where she was further trained in Krishna Consciousness together with her material education. Her ability to always question and debate made a clear indication that law should be her career choice. Hema too was very much interested in reading law and pursued to do so upon completing her high school. Her uncle, who was her father figure, was her source of inspiration and support throughout her high school and college years and became her biggest cheerleader as she progressed in life, until he left his body 9 years ago. Now Hema is a source of inspiration and support to his 2 daughters, Gandharvika Radharani Devi Dasi (a disciple of Jayapataka Swami) and Archanna Devarajan.

When her family and she visited Shri Dham Mayapur for Srila Prabhupada’s Centennial Celebrations in 1996, Hema was formally initiated into the family of Srila Prabhupada by HH Jayapataka Swami. She was 21. She was an inspiration to many youths at that time to take Krsna Consciousness seriously being amongst the first of them to receive initiation.

Little Hema with the mrdanga

Hema qualified as an Advocate & Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya and was a court going lawyer in Kuala Lumpur for 3 years before moving on to London, United Kingdom to gain more experience and exposure in the UK courts of law. In London, the law firm that she practiced in was a stone throw away from the ISKCON SOHO temple, where she used to frequent during her lunch breaks and after working hours. In London, she qualified as a Solicitor of the Court of England & Wales and after a brief stint in the Financial Services Authority of England, Hema moved back to Kuala Lumpur to have her first child, Veyniesha. It was in Malaysia where she climbed the corporate ladder to where she is right now. She now heads a team of 3 lawyers, 5 compliance officers and 3 corporate secretaries in providing legal, compliance and corporate secretarial services to Sun Life Assurance Malaysia Berhad. Her recent achievements in 2014 was duly recognised by Asian Legal Business.

Sun Life Malaysia was scarce of an in-house Legal Department when Hema joined. Hema got in the right people, set up of the department while building a good repertoire between the team and all other divisions of the company, the Regional Office of the company in Hong Kong and the Corporate Office of the company in Canada. She is the main liaison person between the company and its regulator, the Central Bank of Malaysia. Seeing her calibre in managing the Legal Department, she was given 2 other departments to head simultaneously. She is also part of the management committee and it is a must mention that she is the youngest member of this committee. Hema was also the youngest nominated in-house lawyer at the ALB Malaysia Law Awards.

Hema would never neglect her chanting of the HareKrsna MahaMantra daily

Hema says, “I ensured that my team members, alongside their daily responsibilities, received continuous training in order to develop and enhance their talent and capabilities. The concept of ‘I, me, and myself’ is non-existing in my team as we vouch for each other and ensure that we swim and steadily keep each other afloat together, as a team. I learnt this concept through my wonderful up-bringing in ISKCON. My gurumaharaj and our stalwart ISKCON leaders have always demonstrated wonderful leadership qualities that we can all emulate alongside a great showcase of teamwork. I did nothing but only followed in their footsteps and it worked tremendously well for me. I believe that following the leadership style of Srila Prabhupada and his disciples would benefit leaders in any level or field. I pray that I can also use these skills that I have developed to help push forward the teachings of Lord Caitanya to people at large.”

The Malaysia Law Awards is organised by the Asian Legal Business (ALB) which is owned by Thomson Reuters, the world’s leading source of intelligent information for businesses and professionals. With its portfolio of leading titles, online services, law awards and in-house legal summits, ALB provides authoritative and unbiased insights and unmatched networking and business development opportunities to legal professionals throughout the Asia-Pacific and the Middle East regions. It’s Law Awards are held in various countries such as Singapore, China, Malaysia, Korea and Japan. The judging panel consists of the general and the special expertise panels. It is composed of approximately 30 reputable members from the legal academe, in-house teams, law firms, legal associations or business leagues, whose identities are kept confidential prior to the awarding ceremony.

Hema is also an enthusiastic mother of three beautiful girls Veyniesha, Atmikhaa and Amrithaa. Together with her loving and supportive husband Ramesh Balakrishnan, Hema Kanti juggles between giving the girls Krishna Conscious education while ensuring they have what it needs to survive in this very demanding material world. Her mother, maternal aunts and brother, Danistha Devi Dasi Sakhya Rasa Devi Dasi, Niladevi and Raj Kumar are her pillars of strength while pleasing her spiritual master, HH Jayapataka Swami is the main and sole purpose of her life. We wish Hema all the best and hope that more and more youths are inspired by her success. Hema is another living proof that we Hare Krishnas not only sing and dance in airports but can also roar in the court house!
