TOVP Prabhupada International Heritage Museum: Not Your Ordinary Museum
- TOVP.org

The concept of the Srila Prabhupada International Heritage Museum now being organized in the TOVP reaches far beyond that of any other similar Prabhupada museum in scope and exposure. In fact, it will be the largest museum of any spiritual leader in history.

In keeping with our understanding that His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada was the greatest proponent of Vedic wisdom in history, and specifically the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition following in the line of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, the Prabhupada International Heritage Museum will be a world-class museum displaying his life and teachings for the benefit of millions of pilgrims visiting Mayapur for generations to come. Utilizing state-of-the-art means to present the above, the museum will be a sanctuary of divine inspiration through Srila Prabhupada’s vani and vapu in various forms.

Museum Features

  1. A chronological history of Srila Prabhupada’s life will be presented through multimedia presentations, a theater, dioramas, etc.
  2. Historical artifacts will be displayed with appropriate photos of Prabhupada using them, when available.
  3. Sacred art he commissioned will be displayed.
  4. A grand collection of photos of Srila Prabhupada will be displayed.
  5. Guided tours will be available for in-depth explanations.
  6. Seminars and workshops will educate and inspire visitors.
  7. A library and archives with books, letters, audios and videos will be available for research.
  8. Special events will be scheduled for further inspiration.
  9. Sacred spaces for reflection and meditation will be made available.
  10. A gift shop will provide gifts, souvenirs, books, etc. for visitors.
  11. Prasadam distribution will be an essential part of the visitor experience.

The museum will be developed in three stages beginning with 1000 sq. ft. of space, expanding to 6000 sq. ft. and finally to 21,000 sq. ft.. The rate of expansion will depend on various factors such as Prabhupada artifacts collected, displays developed, etc.

At this time, we are humbly begging with straw in our teeth for all Prabhupada disciples who own one or more pieces of Srila Prabhupada memorabilia to come forward and offer it/them for use in the museum for the further worldwide glorification and service of Srila Prabhupada’s mission.

Hera Panchami
→ Ramai Swami

Hera Panchami is a unique festival associated with the famous Rathayatra of Puri. ‘Hera’ means to ‘see’ and ‘Panchami’ means the ‘fifth day’. It is celebrated at Gundicha temple on the fifth day from the start date of the cart festival.

This festival is dedicated to Goddess Mahalaxmi. The temple of Lord Jagannatha is known as Sri Mandira. “Sri” means Laxmi, so the name of the temple as “Srimandira” signifies the fact that Mahalaxmi is the principal Goddess of the Grand Temple. This ritual highlights the separation of Mahalaxmi from Lord Jagannatha.

Lord Jagannatha leaves the Jagannatha temple and goes to Gundica temple for 9 days with his siblings and His consort Mahalaxmi is left behind in the main temple. Lord Jagannatha promised his wife Mahalaxmi that He would return the next day. But Lord Jagannatha does not return the next day. Mahalaxmi waits and 5 days have been passed but Lord Jagannatha did not return to the temple.

Mahalaxmi after waiting for 5 days becomes impatient and worried. At last, She makes up Her mind to meet Lord Jagannatha at Gundica Temple where He has currently based with His brother & sister. At night Mahalaxmi went to Gundica temple in a beautifully decorated palanquin via Bada Danda (the Grand Road) in a colourful procession with pomp and splendour, accompanied by her servitors, to meet Lord Jagannatha and ask Him why He had not returned yet.

The people & servitors who are part of the procession of Mahalaxmi sing the Hera Panchami song. The Hera Panchami song expresses Mahalaxmi’s anger towards Her husband. After knowing that Mahalaxmi is coming to meet Him with anger, Lord Jagannatha asks his servitors to quickly lock the door of Gundica Temple.

Mahalaxmi became very angry due to this activity and passed some satirical remarks to Lord Jagannatha by saying, “My husband! You have become more attracted to your brother Balabhadra & sister Subhadra than me? Is this the reason you locked me out of the Gundica temple?”

Mahalaxmi felt insulted and to teach Her husband a lesson She asked her servitors to break a part of Ratha, the chariot of Lord Jagannath. On her return She avoided the direct route via Grand Road, and secretly returned to the Jagannatha temple via Hera Gohiri Sahi of Puri.
