The devotees of ISKCON Scarborough will be celebrating Govardhana Puja tomorrow- Friday- 8th Nov 2013 starting at 6.45pm.
On this auspicious day, 108 different varieties of Bhoga will be offered to Supreme Personality of Godhead Lord Krsna in the form of Govardhana Hill.
The story behind Govardhan Puja
Govardhana Puja, Go-Puja and Annakuta are all connected with the story of Lord Krishna lifting Govardhan Hill to protect the inhabitants of Vrindavan.
The day after Diwali is referred to as Annakuta, or Govardhan Puja. On this day the inhabitants of Vrindavan (Lord Krishna’s abode on Earth) would hold a harvest festival in honour of King Indra, the demigod who provided the rains essential for the harvest.
One day, however, Lord Krishna wanted to teach Indra a lesson. He convinced the inhabitants of Vrindavan to honour Govardhan Hill instead, whose fertile soil provided the grass upon which the cows and bulls grazed, and to honour the cows and bulls who provided milk and ploughed the lands. Outraged, Indra retaliated with terrifying thunderstorms. The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krishna, calmly lifted Govardhan Hill with the little finger of his left hand. For seven days and seven nights the Lord held up Govardhan Hill, providing a giant umbrella to shelter the inhabitants of Vrindavan from the torrential rain. Realizing the futility of his actions, King Indra bowed down before the Lord with folded hands and offered prayers of supplication. In this way, Lord Krishna demonstrated that He is Deva Deva, the lord of the demigods, and that any purpose for which demigods might be worshipped could easily be served by worshipping Him, the cause of all causes.
We warmly welcome you and your family to ISKCON Scarborough tomorrow to take part in the Govardhana puja.
With best wishes from,
ISKCON Scarborough 3500 McNicoll Avenue, Unit #3, Scarborough,Ontario, Canada,M1V4C7
1968 November 8: "There are 42,000 students in your university, and if 5% of them purchase our Gita, then we can sell at least 2,000 copies there. So I hope you will try for this and it will be both propaganda as well as income." Prabhupada Letters :: 1968
1970 November 8: "Here I am working in Bombay to establish one Krishna Consciousness Headquarters for India. So if Krishna desires, we will have a temple here." Prabhupada Letters :: 1970
1974 November 8: "He has done much service. He cannot be removed whimsically. The local members must agree for him to be removed by you, according to the Direction of Management." Prabhupada Letters :: 1974
1975 November 8: "We haven't got to invent something by our fertile brain for preaching. Study my books and reproduce the purports in your own language. Everything is there. Instruct your temple presidents to preach like this." Prabhupada Letters :: 1975
1975 November 8: "So any one of them cannot help me in this way of book writing because they are unfortunate in the matter of preaching work. They are simply trying to infiltrate our society to do something harmful. So please do not have any correspondence with them and do not do anything without consulting me." Prabhupada Letters :: 1975
Brahmā: How can I personally realize all these things?
Hari: You must certainly investigate them to the fullest extent!
Brahmā: How?
Hari: By inquiring.
Brahmā: From who?
Hari: From individuals who have themselves comprehended these truths.
Brahmā: How did they realize these truths?
Hari: By their own investigative inquiry.
Brahmā: From who?
Hari: From those who inquired before them.
Brahmā: Does this chain of inquiry have an origin?
Hari: I am the origin. It is only by my mercy that anyone can realize anything about me, who am beyond everyone. My mercy spreads out in the world through those who have already availed themselves of it.
To put it simply, I am saying that you will learn the method of realizing these truths by inquiring from one who has already realized, guru. Without receiving my mercy through this channel, it’s not possible to comprehend me by independent conjecture.
Brahmā: How should I inquire?
Hari: Always and everywhere, directly and indirectly.
Brahmā: Would you elaborate on “always and everywhere”?
Hari: There is no circumstance in which you cannot strive for me. No matter who you are, where you are, when you are, or what your condition is – pious or impious – you can always immediately strive for me via sincere inquiry and investigation.
Another implication is that the process of searching for me is itself transcendental and eternal. Even in perfection, the essence of this adventure does not cease.
Brahmā: Would you elaborate on “directly and indirectly.”
Hari: Inquire directly: “What am I?”, and indirectly: “What am I not?” Directly: “What is the Absolute Truth?” Indirectly: “What is ignorance of the Absolute Truth?” Inquire about the value of my love, and the worthlessness not having my love. Inquire about the direct taste of my love when united with me, and the indirect taste of my love when separated from me.
I used to have a Deviant Art account. I would post my digital photos and some poetry and for a time I really liked it. Then Flickr came along and I stopped. Also, Instagram came along and made the Photoshop process of turning normal images into photos that looked like medium format shots became all too easy. I stopped taking photos all together, until I rediscovered film and started this blog.
So I’ve been thinking about restarting my Deviant Art account, but I’m not really sure why. I’d still continue this blog, of course, but it’s nice to have all my photos in an easy-to-view place specifically set aside for people who insist upon calling themselves artists. Flickr is great, but there’s just so much out there and not as user-friendly (especially the newish Flickr incarnation.
I first captured the above scene in 2006 with a digital camera. I later doctored the image and posted it to DA. You can still view it here along with my other stuff – some of it from nine years ago.
Please share your realisations with other devotees from around the world...simply send me an introduction message and I will be happy to make you a member:
Australia is always a country full of programs. As soon as he arrived in Melbourne, Kadamba Kanana Swami went into full-speed mode to participate in the many programs that were planned for him which included a visit to the Botanical Gardens, the university, many programs at the temple and a seminar based on the Sri Hamsaduta. It was a full schedule with lots of opportunity to hear from Maharaja. Below you can find recordings of all the classes. Video recordings were made and edited by Russel Sara and Syamachandra das.
If some videos cannot be viewed below, then please visit the youtube channel of Russel Sara. This channel has all the recent, as well as older videos, of Kadamba Kanana Swami in Melbourne.
The devotees in Melbourne organized a harinam around the city center and afterwards joined Kadamba Kanana Swami at the Botanical Gardens for a lovely picnic. Maharaja led some bhajans to increase the appetite for the holy name and for the wonderful picnic prasadam. (Watch on youtube)

Sydney
11 Oct – 18 Oct 2013
The next part of the Australia Experience was Sydney. Kadamba Kanana Swami arrived here on 11 October. After being fetched from the aiport by Nayanabhiram prabhu, he went to the Sydney Temple which is where he stayed. During this time, Maharaja gave the morning Srimad Bhagavatam classes. Other programs were also planned like a short discourse on Sri Hamsaduta which was similar to the seminar presented in Melbourne and he visited Wahroonga, Cronulla, Heart & Soul studio and Govinda Valley.
Cronulla 12 and 15 Oct 2013
Cronulla is more than just the beach and surfing. You have the Heart & Soul cafe and an affiliated yoga studio. Kadamba Kanana Swami was invited to give a class on yoga philosophy on 12 October. A few days later, on 15 October, he led an evening of mantra mediation and kirtan for the local yoga attendees.
Kirtan in Heart & Soul Yoga Studio – Part 1 – 15 Oct 2013
Govinda Valley offers a peaceful and quiet environment and Maharaja took this opportunity to recuperate. On Monday, Maharaja visited a local spa for some relaxation and treatments.
On Tuesday, he visited the Valley to meet with his friends and disciples. Our family got extended again during a small and private initiation ceremony. We welcome Pritha devi dasi, Madhava dasa and Arjuna das to the family. Silpa Karini devi dasi received second initiation.

Back to India
After a very busy time in Australia, Maharaja found time to hop over to Canberra for the weekend and later on also to Brisbane. Australia is always exciting and busy. On the 28 October, Maharaja left for Vrindavan. Time for some rest and introspection in India. A Swami’s life is never quiet.
Note: For the holy month of Kartik, I have vowed to write a letter every day to Srila Prabhupad.
Dear Srila Prabhupad,
Once again I'm experiencing stuckness in my writing for Seed of Devotion. I know, I know, I just need to sit down and write. Argh, why do I go through this, these intense spells of resistance to writing?
How did you do it? How? Every single day you wrote the most empowered and heart-transforming words on the planet. Just by reading one of your books once, people discover meaning to breathing and being alive. They transform how they live their lives and devote their hearts to love of God.
Prabhupad, you were such a clean, beautiful instrument. So clean.
I aspire to be like you. But I experience the instrument of my heart as clogged up and rusty with pride, ulterior motives, selfishness, and laziness.
So I pray that you at least allow me to stay in the fire of purification to clean my heart. I want to become a truly clean instrument for your and Krishna's will. I want to become your pen.
The waters of Prema-Sarovara are the combined tears of Radha and Krsna in feelings of intense separation from each other. Though such pastimes are far beyond our understanding, our parikrama party had kirtan, discussed the lilas and bathed in the sacred kunda. We left grateful for such an opportunity and felt purified in heart.

Well the coal black sea waits for me me me
The coal black sea waits forever
The waves hit the shore
Crying more more more
But the coal black sea waits forever
The tornados come up the coast they run
Hurricanes rip the sky forever
Though the weathers change
the sea remains the same
The coal black sea waits forever
There are ashes spilt through collective guilt
People rest at sea forever
Since they burnt you up Collect you in a cup
For you the coal black sea has no terror
Will your ashes float like some foreign boat
ot will they sink absorbed forever
Will the Atlantic Coast
have its final boast
Nothing else contained you ever
Now the coal black sea waits for me me me
The coal black sea waits forever
When I leave this joint
at some further point
The same coal black sea will it be waiting

“Tsunami of Diseases Headed Our Way – Know Your Food Before Time Runs Out” Mahavishnu Swami has recommended devotees to read this book by Dr Sahadeva dasa, it is a very useful book for educating ourselves about where our food … Continue reading →
I've got a happy story about someone coming home. It's about an all American boy (young man really) who joined the order of the Hare Krishnas. He was like most people at the time in the 60's and 70's, a product of the counter culture. He settled down as a monk and accepted a guru as his guide. He was hit hard in the heart when his guru passed away and saw power struggles happening within the spiritual organization. He got disenchanted and even dis-chanted for a long time, years in fact.
Life went on for him, not as a monk, but as a married man. The relationship didn't hold together'. Eventually he made his way to central Canada to collage country where the canoeing is good. By now, being outside the company of spiritualists, he fell away from vows he made long ago. One day an event occurred that traumatized him. He took up chanting again after a thirty year break. This was a life break through for him.
He recently showed up at our doorstep at the ashram, after some correspondence and came to test the waters after not being wet (so to speak) for so long. I had the pleasure to meet and spend some time with this former monk who now eagerly wanted to be there again. He purchased a kurta (devotional shirt) and we acquired a dhoti for him, the lower body robe. He sported beads around his neck and applied tilak (earth based substance) to his forehead. It was all coming back to him. The chants, the incense, the prasadam food. The special kind of people. The wisdom. " Why did I even leave"? he asked himself. "We all learn in different ways," he reasoned.
"You're home now," I indicated to him. He ends up having been quite successful in the business world but it just wasn't enough. He wants to get in the thick of spirituality again. It's been a pleasure being with him. We click well together and what's more? He likes exercise and likes walking. That's my kind of person. He's a good brother, a spiritual bro. We went to a sanga home gathering, had a feast and chanting. The host was gracious and all the people there treated him nice.
It's like he never left, in a way. We're glad He's home.
I had a real meaningful discussion with a male student while on foot. He believed as I that everyone--well, almost everyone ... at least 99.99% of us-- are good, but we do carry baggage. We are a combination of what's divine and diabolical. We are pure and profane at the same time. We are all in this dual domain.
Chapter Sixteen of the Bhagavad-gita puts it very clearly that the world is cut with the powers of the divine and the demoniac. And although we are encouraged to always think or be "balanced" it becomes rational that every individual should tip this scale. Life's mission has much to do with putting weight to the virtuous side causing vice to lighten up. That is the entire thrust of the Gita's message; to address anger, lust and greed.
By the way, they do have their place, too. The steam pressure of anger can be released of its lid when one is on the defense of battle, when there is injustice and when one must stand up for the vulnerable. Lust can do a front flip to become love for the Divine. And greed can do a backflip and transform as eagerness to attain the Lord's favor.
Chapter 14 of the Gita outlines the three modes of nature, goodness, passion and darkness-- the three states of consciousness. Life is a bag of trail mix in regards to each individual spirit being influenced into negative and positive ways. This is not to complicate matters-- going from two principles, good and evil, to three, but the karma in this world can be complex. Surely a sensible person can appreciate what is permanent and that which is not. He/she will gravitate to the eternal and endeavor in doing what it takes to be good.
As I wound up my walk and when my walking/talking companion had to go his way, I reached a juncture at the street. It was at Yonge and Bloor where a fellow bent his head slightly down to maneuver his lighter to his cigarette. Once he succeeded to have it lit he looked up at me and mumbled, "Hare Krishna." Two forces were coming from the same pipe (his mouth), which kind of prove the point made. There’s strength and positive in all.
He had me smiling. I hope I'll meet him again and hope that he'll outnumber The mantras to the cigarettes.
“O Maharaja Parikshit, this entire universe, with its great, exalted demigods like Lord Siva, Lord Brahma, and Lord Indra, is under the control of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Yet the Supreme Lord has one transcendental attribute: He comes under the control of His devotees. This was now exhibited by Krishna in this pastime.” (SB 10.9.19)
I thought, ‘This is the answer! Just as Krishna comes under the control of His devotees, Srila Prabhupada also comes under the control of his devotees.”
There is another aspect to what Srila Prabhupada taught us at the end. As we recite every day in the Damodarastaka (3): “By such pastimes He is drowning the inhabitants of Gokula in pools of ecstasy and revealing to those devotees who are absorbed in knowledge of His supreme majesty and opulence that He is conquered only by devotees whose pure love is imbued with intimacy and is free from all conceptions of awe and reverence. To this Supreme Lord, Sri Damodara, whose belly is bound not with ropes but with His devotee’s pure love, I offer my humble obeisances.”
Of course, Krishna lila is different, because in Vrindavan the devotees forget that Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. With the spiritual master, however, there is always an awareness that he is the spiritual master and we are his disciples. Still, Srila Prabhupada was trying to bring us to a higher, more spontaneous platform in interacting with him, which is also the message of the Damodara lila.” —————————————————————————————————————————— Srila Prabhupada’s Disappearance Day Talk
