Vrindavan Das Thakur Appearance
→ Ramai Swami

Sri Vrindavan Das Thakura’s mother’s name was Sri Narayani Devi. Narayani Devi was the daughter of Srivas Thakura’s brother. When Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu revealed his divinity in the house of Srivasa, showing his true self to the assembled devotees there, Narayani devi was only a four year old girl.

Gaura Ganodesa Dipika describes that Narayani was previously Kilimbika, the younger sister of Lord Sri Krishna’s nursemaid Ambika. It is also explained that Ambika became Malini Devi, the wife of Srivasa Pandita. Therefore, Ambika and Kilimbika reappeared in Gauranga Mahaprabhu’s pastimes as Malini Devi and Narayani Devi, in their same roles as maidservants.

Gaurahari always gave Narayani special attention whenever He saw her, and personally gave her betel nut remnants from His mouth. Sometime after Mahaprabhu left Mayapur, Narayani married and moved to another village. She was pregnant when her husband suddenly died and this is when Malini Devi brought her to Mamgachhi to live.

Sri Vrindavan Das Thakura is an incarnation of Krishna Dvaipayana Vyasa. Vedavyasa wrote the Vedas. He then wrote Srimad Bhagavatam the mature fruit of the Vedas that describes Lord Krishna’s pastimes. Then, as Vrindavan Das Thakura, Vyasdeva wrote Sri Caitanya Bhagavata (previously known as Caitanya Mangala); it describes Krishna’s pastimes as Gaurahari in Navadvipa-Mayapur. This most enchanting rendition of Gauranga Mahaprabhu’s pastimes gives the conclusion of Srimad Bhagavatam – Bhakti, the devotional service to Lord Sri Krishna.

Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura wrote in his commentary to Caitanya Bhagavata, “At the ancestral home of Malini Devi, Vrindavan Das played as a small boy growing up. There he was nourished and cared for just like a valuable gem.” Vrindavan Das Thakura took initiation from Lord Nityananda at 16 years of age and went travelling and preaching with Him. When they were in Denur, in the district of Burdwan, Lord Nityananda told him to stay and preach there and so he never personally saw Lord Caitanya. He went to the first Gaura-Purnima festival at Kheturi-grama, accompanying Sri Jahnava Devi, the eternal consort of Lord Nityananda.

Srila Krishna Dasa Kaviraja Gosvami shows his supreme homage and gratitude by honoring Vrndavana Dasa Thakura with the appellation “Vyasa” in the Caitanya-Caritamrta Antya 20.82: Vrndavana Dasa Thakura is Lord Nityananda’s favourite devotee. And therefore he is the original Vyasadeva in describing the pastimes of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.” As Srila Vyasadeva told Sri Krishna’s pastimes in Bhagavatam and other Puranas,Srila Vrndavana Dasa Thakura described Caitanya lila in Caitanya Bhagavata.

When scriptures depict animals speaking human languages, how is that to be understood?

Answer Podcast

Transcription by: Dr Suresh Gupta (Muzaffarnagar)

Question: When scriptures depict animals speaking human languages, how is that to be understood?

Answer: The question will be answered in three parts.

Firstly, the Srimad Bhagavatam, Ramayana and Mahabharata describe not just a life as we know right now, but also an expanse of life which is much broader. For example, the vanaras described in the Ramayana are not simply monkeys, the word “vanara” etymologically means “va” (or) and “nara” (human). That means when people see them, they appear so similar to humans that people have a question in mind – is this a monkey or a human.

Thus, the vanaras are considered not just monkeys but celestial apes. They have quite an evolved consciousness and are not like the present-day monkeys. Similarly, the birds like Jatayu are not ordinary birds. We see even in the epics that not all birds and animals speak and communicate. For example, when Sita was abducted and Ram was searching for Sita, Ram actually turns and asks the trees, the birds and animals, but none of them reply. This shows that these epics are not mythology where one imagines animals to be talking. There are certain variations of those species which were almost evolved to the level of human conscious and thus they could communicate, they could talk, not everyone but some of them. So, that’s one understanding.

The other understanding is that these are great souls who were already spiritually evolved but temporarily born in particular species. In the animal body, they might exhibit certain attributes which are not compatible with that species but that is because they already have an evolved consciousness from their previous life. One such example is Gajendra. In the Srimad Bhagavatam, we see that Gajendra, although an elephant, but offers great prayers. Gajendra was already an evolved soul in a previous life but somehow, got cursed and given an elephant body. We have heard in scriptures that if somebody grows spiritually then such advancement is never lost. If spiritual advancement is never lost, then why is it that sometimes such souls get a lower species? This may be as a result of the reaction to certain actions they may have done. Although they get a lower body, they do not get a lower consciousness. Gajendra was King Indradyumna in his previous life. He got an animal body but did not get an elephant consciousness. His consciousness remained more than an evolved soul. Although temporarily his consciousness was covered but still that consciousness was there at a dormant level. Thus, the second possibility is that not all members of the species are talking but some are as they are already evolved, souls.

The third possibility of animals talking in the scriptures is because it could be a miraculous intervention. Just like in the Chaitanya Charitamrita, it is described that animals started chanting Hare Krishna in the forests of Jharkhand. They were ordinary animals living in the forest and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu demonstrated miraculous potency by making them sing and chant Hare Krishna. This was possible because the Supreme Lord is present in the hearts of all the living beings and the Supreme Lord has all knowledge. The soul has a particular level of knowledge based on the kind of body it has but the Supreme Lord has all knowledge; and the Supreme Lord can use the soul to exhibit a level of knowledge in consciousness that is beyond the soul’s capacity in that particular body.
Thus, the three possibilities are that
(i) these are referred to different species,
(ii) these are referring to specially evolved souls within the lower specie and
(iii) these demonstrate miraculous intervention of the Lord.

Walk and Eat Well

As a walker who prefers moving through green spaces, I can’t help noticing the plants to either side of me. For instance, I’m noticing the very invasive garlic mustard with its tiny white flowers. It’s supposed to be fairly good for the health and all agree that it gives off a spicy bite to a tossed salad. It’s also good as a pesto when prepared like basil. The problem with it is that it takes over the forest floor.

Stingy nettle is also making its appearance in the foresty ravine. This wild veg taste even better than spinach. When forging it it’s advisable to have long sleeves and maybe even use gloves since the leaves have a prickly dynamic. Once its boiled or cooked those tiny needles just dissolve.
 I
Also magical at this time are dandelions. The flower tops are excellent as pakorasI turned our cook, Dwarkanatha, on to this. He tried some and churned out a few from the kitchen. My God!Delicious! I’m also encouraging him to use the young leaves in salad.

It happened that one of our wonderful couples from Oakville showed up with a bag full of fiddleheads, which are also now good for the harvest. Kasyapa and Panchami were kind to deliver. I guess in their native Gujarat this fern may not be so common but it is quite in abundance in shaded areas around here. Our cook received the stock. He cooked them with some potatoes and even he admitted they are scrumptious.  It was his first time.

Eating local wild veggies along with the practice of walking build up your resistance to nasty viruses. We offer the food to Krishna and you’ve got the best consecrated food.

Early Rising

It is a pleasure and a privilege to rise early when the mind is clear and open for spiritual injection.  Every morning a small group of us sit down for a serious hearing of sastra, documented wisdom.  Good for the soul is reading a short passage from the Bhagavad-gita for instance.  This morning we read from chapter 11, verse 39 and it was like a universe that spoke to us.

“You are air, and You are the supreme controller!  You are fire, You are water, and You are the moon! You are Brahma, the first living creature, and You are the great-grandfather.  I therefore offer my respectful obeisances unto you a thousand times, and again and yet again!”

And in the purport (explanation) which is brief, it was worth hearing a clarification.  “The Lord is addressed here as air because the air is the most important representation of all the demigods, being all-persuasive.  Arjuna also addresses Krishna as the great grandfather because He is the father of Brahma, the first living creature in the universe.”

These are powerful statement that help us feel empowerment.  And that empowerment is one of wanting to serve.  In order to prepare for serving others, what speak of serving the One who puts everything in motion, is that some time is necessary.  So I’m recommending that for time-management early rising is an essential factor in making progress on the spiritual path.  Thank you readers.

- TOVP.org

The TOVP Team headed by Ambarisa and Braja Vilasa prabhus is grateful to the worldwide ISKCON devotee community for all their support over the years. Without your continued and steadfast source of financial assistance we would not have accomplished what has thus far been achieved and offered to Srila Prabhupada. It is truly a miraculous milestone for ISKCON and heralds the incredible preaching opportunities that lay ahead with the Grand Opening of this historic project.

As you know, due to the India lock-down all construction work has stopped, and until lifted the halt will continue. Despite some financial setbacks due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we are poised to begin construction in earnest so we can complete and open Lord Nrsimhadeva’s temple wing and altar by 2021.

Below we would like to remind our U.S. donors of alternate ways, some old and some new, to give to the TOVP, a few of which don’t require any direct donations at all, such as AmazonSmile, eBay for Charity and Give with Bing. We hope you will take this opportunity to review these methods of support and do the needful.

DONATE YOUR STOCKS TO THE TOVP
We would like to encourage devotees who are invested in stock programs to consider contributing some shares to the TOVP as a donation option or to fulfill their existing pledge towards the MISSION 22 MARATHON. The TOVP is now set up to accommodate donations of this kind. Please contact Vegavati devi dasi at our Alachua office for more information at m.tovp.org/amsmile

Vaishnavas are treasure houses of transcendental mercy

Kadamba Kanana Swami, YouTube Live Stream, 26 March 2020

This quote was taken from a live stream series of classes discussing Caitanya Caritamrta. Here is the introductory text:

So we see how Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu introduced Santana Goswami to all of his associates from Nabadwip, who were all from Bengal, all these devotees were obviously great personalities. And of course amongst them were Advaita Acarya and Lord Nityananda, who are both the Supreme Personality of Godhead. So Lord Caitanya asked Santana Goswami to offer his obeisances to all these personalities, which he did, so they could bestow their mercy upon him. And the Vaishnavas bestowed upon him mercy, friendship and honour.

The Vaishnavas are the caretakers of mercy. They live by mercy, they are engaging in devotional service and they get mercy through that devotional service. They are associating with Vaishnavas and they get mercy through those Vaishnavas. They visit the holy abodes such as Vrndavana, Mayapur and Jagannatha Puri, and they are getting mercy there. They are digging for jewels in the minds of scriptures for whole collections of jewels from various sources. Mercy from service, mercy from association, mercy from the holy dhamas, mercy from scripture, mercy from Krsna prasadam and mercy from the holy name.

So in this way, all that mercy is building up within a Vaishnava. All these different aspects of mercy that one gets from one’s spiritual life, become building blocks of one’s bhakti.

Finding a Perfect Master, Zoom Talk with Devotees from Surat
Giriraj Swami

“Burning to ask my question, I raised my hand. “There are so many swamis and yogis,” I began, “and each recommends a different process of self-realization, and each says that his is the best. So how do I know which is actually best?” Prabhupada responded, “What is your goal? Do you want to serve God, or do you want to become God? If you want to become God, that means you are not God now. And how can not-God become God? God is God. He is always God. He doesn’t have to become God by meditation. Krishna is always God. He is God when He is playing on the lap of Mother Yasoda; He is God when He is fighting at Kuruksetra; He’s God when He’s speaking the Bhagavad-gita to Arjuna. That is God. So, if you want to serve God and you sow the seed of devotional service and water it by chanting, God will provide the sunlight and all other favorable conditions to make it grow. But if you want to become God, then why should God help the competition?” Then he said, “God is in your heart. He is ready to help you. You can become godly—but you cannot become God. If you want to become God, you are only cheating yourself.””

Restricted Freedom
→ ISKCON News: Latest Stories

We’ve seemingly lost our freedom. But when ‘freedom’ means that everything is so available that we become complacent, what’s the benefit? If ‘restriction’ generates an appreciation and gratitude of what we’ve taken for granted all these years, where’s the loss?

Swallowing the bitter pill
→ KKSBlog

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, 2 February 2020, London, United Kingdom, Bhagavad-gita 9.22)

Krsna consciousness is not a dreamy state of mind. Krsna consciousness is about realism. It is about actually seeing things as they are. To understand things a little deeper, then a little further; it is about looking up a little bit beyond the clouds. To actually see what is behind, and so on. Where is all this energy coming from? Even when we stand in front of the ocean and witness wave after wave washing ashore and we also notice that there is a powerful wind behind it, but where does all this energy come from? The sun is shining, but where does all this energy come from? All these planets are rotating, but where is all this energy coming from? And we feel dwarfed in front of a mountain, but what is a mountain in front of a universe? And what is a universe in front of many universes? How can we conceive the opulence of nature? And where does all that power come from? It always recalls the understanding of a Supreme Lord, a Supreme Controller. And when we come to the point of swallowing the bitter pill and actually accepting that we are not the Supreme, it hurts a little, but what to do? We are always inferior to the Supreme Lord, ouch! And when we actually come to the point that we are bowing down to Him, then everything finally starts to work!

 A Cure

At the start of today’s walk I took our resident monk from Bangladesh with me to show him what is a dandelion, that brightly yellow-colored flower that Europeans brought to the New World (North America) long ago. I plucked out one of those little flowers of wonder, which some people call a weed, so Dwarkanatha, also our major cook, could see it.

“The flower head is delicious as a pakoraThe young leaves are great in a salad,” I explained. He appreciated the gesture of education and is committed to trying it out as food preparation of a nutritious kind. Then he told me something significant about herbal power that was like a miracle to hear.

He told me last week that 36 monks (brahmacharis) in our Dakatemple/ashram had been found with Covid-19 positive. That was devastating to hear. The whole facility was shut down.

But then one of the members, a medical-smart person, had them take a tea 3 times a day internally and three times breathe in this same substance with its steam. The report now is a glorious one. All those victims of the virus now read negative.

“So my dear Dwarkanatha, what is this cure and what are the ingredients?” I implored. This is what he said:

Black pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, turmeric in water, boiled, steeped in water.

“Okay, so more people should give it a try,” I suggested.

“Yes,” he said firmly with a smile. I proceeded walking happily taking my Trinidadian walking partner, Aisvarya, with me.

The Meeting of the Brahmins

It was like the meeting of the brahmins, only some brahminswere not Vedic or even Hindu. Yesterday evening I was on the call with faith leaders of different backgrounds. Our subject was “Our Stronger Together Interfaith Zoom Gathering.” It was the coming together of groups from Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism and Hinduism and it was accomplished by way of zoom. Kevin Moore of the United Church was the convener and we spoke about the pandemic and how to respond to it. In other words, what are the different groups doing about it. I represented the Hindu community particularly for the Regent Park area.

It is encouraging to hear what goes on charity-wise, especially in the area of feeding folks in need. Each leader was actually a presenter keeping to the theme “From Our Hearts to Our Actions.” The allotted time for presentation was from 3-5 minutes. That ended up being a kind of joke being that almost everyone went over time. I guess each and every one takes pride in their services to others. The caring nature of the session was quite uplifting and I’m looking forward to a future venture as well.

Now I’ll let you see in part of my presentation. I expressed the need to not only tell my congregants but to whoever can be inspired to do so, to build up your immunity and strength through walking outdoors. “To combat the little demon, Covid, we require to work on resilience.” I felt passionate about saying and doing so. When you’re strong you can help others.

Today I did what many people do in our neighbourhoodwalk the service road along the railroad tracks.

May the Source be with you!
