The Cost of Blessings
Giriraj Swami

My godbrother Bhagavata Asraya Prabhu told me the following story, which he heard from our godbrother Gunarnava Prabhu.

Srila Prabhupada was visiting Bombay for what turned out to be one of the last times. Although the building was still under construction, at his request his quarters had been hastily prepared, and he had moved in.

Srila Prabhupada was by this time in poor health, and everything was a great effort for him, but still he was giving darshan to some devotees and guests. At one point an Indian man stood up in the midst of it all and, making something of an exhibition of himself, folded his hands and requested, “Swamiji, give me your blessings.”

Srila Prabhupada fixed the man with a stare that lasted long enough for the man and everyone in the room to start to feel uncomfortable. When the situation seemed to reach the point where it was intolerable, Srila Prabhupada began to speak. Addressing everyone, he said, in effect, “Such a big organization, this ISKCON . . . worldwide organization . . . with so many problems. All coming on my head. Every day all problems coming to me . . . so many letters from all over the world. All on my head.”

He gently tapped his head a few times, saying, “You don’t know the headache I have.” Then he gave the man another look and said, “So, if you want my blessings, you take some of my headache.”

Giriraj Swami

He gives an invaluable gift - love to God for everyone. According to His prediction, Mahamantra Hare Krsna is heard throughout the world. Mlecchas and yavanas!
Srila Prabhupada sent some American and European disciples to one of his sannyasi godbrothers’ ashram in India in the late 60s’. However, this sannyasi forbid them to cook or to perform arotika; they were Westerners and were thus too fallen to perform these services. Prabhupada never forgot this insult to his disciples: half a decade later, when that sannyasi asked Prabhupada for a contribution, Prabhupada replied as follows.

Iskcon devotees clean the Holy Dhama (Album of photos)

Iskcon devotees, including HG Mahatma prabhu ACBSP (in the photo), spent a morning collecting garbage thrown carelessly in the streets of the Holy Dhama of Sri Mayapur. There is a plan for the stores in Iskcon Mayapur to be using primarily products with biodegradable packaging but is not applied yet. There are also other policies thought out in order to prevent pollution like for example placing signs everywhere: 1000 RUPEE FINE FOR LITTERING and then get all the chokidars to enforce it. Eventually, these and other norms of this effect will be applied, as the nearing of the completion of the international project of the TOVP becomes imminent.

Srila Prabhupada; No Ordinary Guru, No Ordinary Acarya (video)

By Praghosa dasa

The most extraordinary story ever told, who actually is Srila Prabhupada? His message & mission is the most crucial & critical message for humankind in the history of the world, Srila Prabhupada seemed to know that he would have temples filled up with devotees. He would look out and say: “I am not a poor man, I am rich. There are temples and books, they are existing, they are there, just time is separating us from them.” Continue reading "Srila Prabhupada; No Ordinary Guru, No Ordinary Acarya (video)

Visiting with Rajani Priya
Giriraj Swami

This evening, accompanied by Ganga dasi from Madrid and Bhakta dasa from Los Angeles, I visited Rajani Priya dasi (Rose Forkash) at her home in Carpinteria, California. She is six months away from her one hundredth birthday, but she is mentally and spiritually alert, and we all felt enlivened by her association. She described her first visits to the Los Angeles temple, how peaceful she felt and how much she appreciated the chanting. “The more I chanted, the better I felt,” she said. “And so I chanted more and more.” As we were leaving, she spontaneously broke into singing the Hare Krishna mantra, lifting her hands from her walker and waving them in the air as she led us in kirtan. What a special, blessed soul!

Hare Krishna.

Should ISKCON Devotees become Vegan?
→ Dandavats

By Hrdaya Caitanya dasa

This is not an official ISKCON presentation. I became concerned when I saw many devotees, especially in the west, becoming vegan, without looking for alternative solutions, such as developing farms with protected cows. These are my personal views based on my understanding of Srila Prabhupada’s teachings. Veganism is a broad topic, in this presentation we mainly discuss about milk consumption. Experiencing a breakthrough
→ KKSBlog

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, 26 June 2015, Gita Nagari, United States of America, Srimad Bhagavatam 3.25.8)

At the time of initiation, even if the vows are taken sincerely, how deep is our sincerity? Even in the best scenario, when the disciple very sincerely from the heart says, “I am going to give my life to you”, how deep is that sincerity anyway? By the definition of Kunti Devi:

janmaisvarya-sruta-sribhir
edhamana-madah puman
naivarhaty abhidhatum vai
tvam akincana-gocaram

(Srimad Bhagavatam 1.8.26)

Kunti Devi points out that unless one is materially exhausted, unless one has no more attachment to one’s position on earth and unless one is sarvopādhi-vinirmuktaḿ (Caitanya Caritamrta Madhya Lila 19.170) – free from all sense of designation, of deriving some prestige from birth, from learning, from wealth, from beauty and all these things; unless one is free from these things, how can one even have sincerity?

So here we are and many changes have to be made. The spiritual master has to invest more and more, plant more and more seeds in the heart of the disciple; make that disciple increase his commitment to Krsna otherwise, we just go on auto-pilot. The tendency to go on auto-pilot is very natural because everything becomes routine. In the beginning, it is brand new. It is so exciting and then, “You know, just finished chanting rounds from yesterday, actually. Oh God, it has started already again! Whew. Will it ever end… and what is the result of this chanting?” The result is more chanting and it will never end! It goes on eternally. If you think about it, is that what we really want? Do we really want to chant eternally? Whew! Sixteen rounds… Ping! Finished! Very convenient. But, we have to go in depth, to get out of this shallow state of consciousness where emotions are just happening on the mental plane.

Srila Bhaktsiddhanta Saraswati Thakur explains how we are hovering on the mental plane because when the spirit soul becomes embodied, that spirit soul goes into a dormant state and the natural functions of thinking, feeling and willing – which are actually the functions of the soul – get stolen by the mind. The mind takes over these functions of thinking, feeling and willing and all our experiences are on the mental platform. The mind likes one thing and the mind does not like the other. Sankalpa vikalpa – accepting and rejecting. The mind is always hovering on the mental plane; that is actually the case.

The soul, where real thinking, feeling and willing is meant to take place and where such feelings are deep and meaningful, is in a dormant state and then, śravaṇādi-śuddha-citte karaye udaya (Caitanya Caritamrta Madhya Lila 22.107), by hearing, chanting and devotional service to the holy name, the soul gradually awakens. That is the business of the spiritual master; to somehow or other awaken some eagerness in the disciple to take it a step further.

We can never be routinely engaged in devotional service. Pure devotional service is a very high level. It is not so easily attained. It takes a great effort. It is like we are wanting the highest and wanting it for free, if possible. So, the number of rounds is not the issue. The number is not the focus. It is not about the number. It is about the absorption. It is about the energy that we put into our activities. It is where we make Krsna a priority. This is there where we experience a breakthrough.

Crowds and Service

You do see the occasional gray langur, a black-faced, powerful monkey, not as naughty as the rhesus macaque of the Vrindavan area.  The langurs are rather chilled out, but are still out there searching for food, like almost any other tree-climbing monkey.

The crowds of people are now coming in, from Delhi, Hyderabad and other parts of the world.  Even without Chinese participation this year, it doesn't mean you won't get caught up in a crowd somewhere, inside or outside.  I have my excuses for avoiding the crowds.  It's the last day of meetings with members of the Governing Body Commission.  Also, our drama crew was set to a schedule for filming the play "Grandsire."  Film-makers Dhira and Jagannath Kirtan had been up since 5:00 a.m., and were determined to go at it until the mission was completed, just before midnight.

When I stepped into the shooting sessions at 7:00 p.m., I picked up on the serious mood in the Samadhi Auditorium.  I wouldn't doubt that there were moments of monkeying-around by our younger actors in the play.

One of the scenes that audiences really enjoy from "Grandsire" is the Shiva dance.  Since it is Shiva celebration time, it is only appropriate that the dance be a highlight for our crew.  Many shoots or "takes" were done on that particular segment.  https://www.instagram.com/p/B8uzalUAzZD/?igshid=vz24pu1tsiab

It was a long day of service, service to our mission which is one of hard work and pleasure.

Flowers of Wilt Restored

Interesting day which started off with flowers in a park and bowing before an icon or deity of the sage, Vyasa, author of Vedic wisdom.  That was fragrant and sweet in its own way.

I did get quite worked up at a meeting (our second-last day) when we began speaking about the topic of our overall sessions—the Vaishnavi Diksha Guru.  To put it more clearly, we are referring to the approval process for allowing females to become official teachers (gurus).  I've been passionate about showing fairness and compassion to women of a mature standard.  There was an overwhelming concern amongst a bunch of us that the proposal for approval, from last October, may be rescinded.

I was shaking in sensation when registering my name, a daily routine to confirm one's presence.  It's true.  I could hardly write.  I was nervous.

It took some time for varying authorized groups, who are the voices of the people, along with members of the Governing Body Commission, to go over this touchy topic.  Fortunately, the decision of last October holds and will not change.  That is the conclusion for now.  The proposal welcomes areas in the world to have female diksha gurus, while other parts, due to cultural realities, will stick to their traditional and cultural ways.

By the end of the day, I was calmed down, especially after watching our cast perform the last day of "Grandsire".

When the Sun Moves

When the sun moves to touch the horizon, a recording of the beautiful shehnai begins.  It's not the sound of a bird, but a magical-sounding horn accompanied by drone and tabla.  When our guru attended this annual festival, which he inaugurated in the early ‘70s, he hired professional musicians to play and  enhance the meditative spirit.  He, Prabhupada, was very pleased with the sound of the shehnai.  It was recorded.  https://youtu.be/r9nVtgyZoyw

As that shehnai was projected over the loud speaker outside the samadhi where I was chanting japa, who should appear?  Not Krishna, not the great monk, Chaitanya, but Gaura, my friend.  He came to tell me that although there are some physical challenges for him in India—allergies—he's really appreciating the company around him.  Spiritual people are a reinforcement for the soul, we concluded.

In Mayapura, bhakti yogis come from all over the world, annually.  These pilgrims, some trained, some less so, are here for a shakti/bhaktiboost.  It's true that the place has a certain draw for some locals as if it's Disneyland.  The cameras are out shooting all the features of the place.  The visitors, especially the women, come dressed in the most colourful saris.

Meanwhile, at the meeting, I admired the terracotta water pitchers that we were supplied with.  Gone are the plastic water bottles.  That is a sign of progress.

Selfless Love

There is this nice devotee, Sujan, who loves the soil, water, plants and flowers.  He spends hours outdoors, weeding, watering, curing and caring for the greens and the flowers.  He loves his work.
Mayapura is a place of plants and flowers.  It is not uncommon to receive flower garlands each day from well-wishers, no less than six.  Of course, that may be so if you are a monk, expect one garland to wrap around the neck and embrace the chest.  After one comes off, another one appears from some kind soul, perhaps looking for some blessing.  I hope all people are treating each other with this selfless love.  I don't know.

One thing is for sure, we are all spirit souls, not these bodies, beyond any designation.  We are not man, woman or a member of the third sex.  We are servants of love, and that love can be perceived in all beings and objects.  In the plants, ants, pets and wild creatures, and in the enemy and friend, there is something to embrace or resist.  Even in our own resistance and defense of something, we achieve some lesson.  Where a lesson is taught, love is learned.

Our drama troup is doing well—full house each night, standing ovation.  I suppose people love the main character—Bhishma.  He was so selfless in his service to others.  He became a sacrificial lamb, loved and respected.  Called a mahajana for his greatness.  Bhisma was a shining example of what a saint should be like.

Mayapur Kirtan Mela

Every year at the Mayapur festival, there is a kirtan mela, which features well known kirtan leaders from around the world. It starts in the morning, after the program and goes into the evening until 10.00pm.

Many thousands of devotees attend and the mood in front of Sri Panca Tattva is ecstatic. It’s great to see everyone come together and just absorb themselves in kirtan, which is what the movement of Lord Caitanya is all about.

Special Come Together

Sages, avatars and the sacred texts called "Veda" all say the same thing, that the best action you can take in spiritual life is to embrace the company of spiritual comrades.  And so that's what we did today, in a special way, as we do every year.

This year, two of our ladies in their mature years, arranged a lunch for those of the Canadian branch of our mission.  But, wait a second, we had Americans in there too; one who qualified as a "Resister" or as we used to say "Draft Dodger".  Yes, indeed, one of our lunch buddies, defected from the United States during the time of the Vietnam War, and discovered Krishna at the same time.  Another U.S. devotee, who run the "Krishna House" in Florida, very successfully, managed our Vancouver Centre in the ‘80s.  It was interesting to note that in 1967, a Punjabi gentleman who emigrated to Canada, took shelter of Krishna at that time, and has since been a solid man in spiritual life: a monk in saffron.  His name is Gopala Krishna Goswami. He is well-known.

So, we went around the table of forty-five and each stood up, when it was his or her turn, to tell their brief story.  Amongst the group were three couples with landmark marriages.  Kala and Yasomati joined ISKCON in Montreal and have been married for fifty years.  Ghosh and Girija of British Columbia have been locked in wedlock for over forty years, and Kramadasa and Paurnamasi also boast a similar statistic.

Our annual lunch was held this year in the upper deck of "Govinda's Restaurant" and the menu was organic salad and pizzas.  The real treat was each other.

Editor’s note: On January 21st , 1977, then President Jimmy Carter pardoned all American Vietnam War draft dodgers, which allowed all of them to avoid any imprisonment or legal convictions in their home states. Many chose to stay in Canada where they had been welcomed as legal immigrants during the war.

Our Premiere

"Are you excited about your debut?"  asked one of the many attendees at the Mayapura retreat, referring to our first performance of "Grandsire".

"It's in good hands," I said, meaning that our cast has put in a lot of hard work to the best of their abilities.  Cronje—who is now Karuna Avatar (initiated name)—is the lead actor.  It's a big job for him—lots of lines to memorize and blocking to remember.  He's also involved in numerous martial arts scenes in this production.  He and the other players have given it their all.

The crowds could be heard outside the auditorium an hour before the doors opened.  They were in great anticipation.  I went out to form a proper queue, and even lined up shoes neatly for the first few arrivals to help set a standard for an onslaught.  Well, an onslaught it was.  Pushkar, the monk in charge of the Samadhi Auditorium, opened the entrance doors, and experienced a flood of people.  The place was packed.  Unfortunately, some people had to be turned away.

So, there we were, experiencing a sauna of sorts, with bodyheat thick in the air.

"Turn on the fans," I urged Srinivas, our sound man.  "Fans" could be a play on words because the drama fans here at Mayapura were indeed turned on, especially when South African, Jambhavan, came on the stage.  He is our consistent performer.  The audience loves him.  Thank you Pariksit, assistant director.
Some people know me as "The Walking Monk" while others, as "Drama Maharaj."

Tamal Krishna Goswami’s Disappearance Day
→ Dandavats

Tamal Krishna Goswami’s Disappearance Day.
Srila Prabhupada said that when a Vaishnava departs we feel simultaneously happy and sad. We feel happy because we know the Vaishnava has gone to Krishna, but we feel sad because we will miss the Vaishnava’s association. I have no doubt that Srila Tamal Krishna Goswami Maharaja has gone both to the lotus feet of Srila Prabhupada and to the lotus feet of Sri Sri Radha-Kalachandji. By such service as he offered to Srila Prabhupada for so many years, one is naturally promoted to Their service.
