All-Attractive Hari-Katha
→ Dandavats

Hare KrishnaBy Jaya Gaursundar Dasa

This Hari-katha is attractive for all. It is sung by those who are already on the liberated platform due to being free from all material hankerings. It is the medicine [for those who are aiming for liberation]. Moreover, it gives pleasure to the ears and minds [of those who are complete materialists]. Due to all these reasons, which person will cease from hearing such katha, except for a butcher or the killer of his own soul? Continue reading "All-Attractive Hari-Katha

Hare KrishnaBy Pancharatna das

When we began this project one of our primary goals was to provide a way for devotees, especially book distributors, to connect people they meet with a follow-up system. One of our main considerations was to have online courseware to provide people that are interested. Now we have it and we invite you to use it. I'm especially hoping that this facility could be taken up by book distributors during the upcoming marathon. Continue reading "Chantnow.com – A New Website to Support Your Outreach

The Glories of Srila Gaurakisora dasa Babaji, November 18, San Diego
Giriraj Swami

“Gaurakisora dasa Babaji was so renounced he would just sleep on the ground. For Food he might get some rice that he would just parch in the sun. If there was nothing else he would take some mud from the Ganges and ingest that. For clothing he would take whatever cloth was lying in the street or he would go to the crematorium and pick up rejected cloth to wear. Internally he was absorbed in the loving mellows of Radha and Krishna.

He was uneducated — it was said that he was illiterate. He could not even sign his own name. Despite being illiterate learned scholars would approach him with difficult passages from the sastra and he would explain the meaning. Sometimes people would come and read to him from the sastra and he would deliver learned discourses.”

ECO-Vrindaban New Vrindaban ISKCON cows gardens Prabhupada ISKCON

ECO-Vrindaban Board and Staff Meeting Minutes 10/14/2018

Mission Statement: ECO-Vrindaban promotes cow protection, local agriculture, and above all, loving Krishna, as envisioned by Srila Prabhupada, ISKCON New Vrindaban’s Founder-Acharya.

Participating Directors: Chaitanya Mangala (chair), Jamuna Jivani (board secretary), Makara, Olivia, Ranaka, and Vraja.

Participating Staff: Caitanya Bhagavat, Lalita Gopi, Monique, Suchandra, and Vidya.

1. Ox Program

Rama left New Vrindaban and is not sure whether or not he will return. Caitanya Bhagavat decided not to continue with the ox program, though he will still continue with cow care. If the ox program is to continue, a dedicated person is needed to take responsibility for it.

2. Policies Regarding the Cows

Some concerns were raised by staff members:

  • A desire for more transparency in regards to INV’s fundraising for the cows
  • Safety issues concerning visitors to the Temple Barn
  • The appropriateness of various go-puja practices in terms of Srila Prabhupada’s instructions for New Vrindaban

It was agreed the safety issues should be addressed immediately. Ranaka was tasked to take the lead with this. The cowherds will put together a proposal outlining visiting hours, what guests should and should not do while in the barn area, and so on. Also, signs will be put up in and around the barn. The ECO-V Board plans to address the other topics with the new INV administration, sometime after the New Year.

3. Garden Crew Updates

The garden crew highlighted some of their accomplishments this year, including:

  • Establishing better communication between the gardeners, and the temple management and kitchen
  • Providing produce to the temple & restaurant kitchens, as well as the broader community
  • Inciting more community interest in gardening

Goals for 2019 include:

  • Engaging more youth
  • Growing more food
  • Learning how to use the current irrigation system and upgrading it
  • Constructing greenhouses to enable a longer growing season
    • High tunnels
    • A transportable greenhouse at Vidya’s for growing flowers year-round

4. ECO-V Made Gifts

Some staff and directors expressed an interest in providing gifts at events that are grown and made in New Vrindaban. Staff members agreed to come up with proposals.

Here’s a link to the ECO-Vrindaban website.

Dhruva Maharaja Leaves Home, November 18, San Diego
Giriraj Swami

Maitreya and Vidura

Giriraj Swami read and spoke from Srimad-Bhagavatam 4.8.3-5.

“Piety refers to the process of cleansing the heart. As recommended by Lord Caitanya, one has to cleanse the dust from the mirror of the mind, and then advancement on the path of liberation begins. Here also the same process is recommended. Malam means “contamination.” We should learn to despise all the causes of devastation, beginning from irreligion and cheating, and then we shall be able to make advancement in a life of piety. The possibility of our attaining Krishna consciousness will be easier, and we shall not be subjected to repeated devastation. The present life is repeated birth and death, but if we seek the path of liberation, we may be saved from repeated suffering.” — SB 4.8.5 purport

Kartika Month
→ Ramai Swami

I was staying at our Adelaide temple for the last few days of the auspicious Kartika month. Many were coming morning and night to sing Damodarastakam prayers and offer lamps to the deities.

Some devotees were following the extra vows of Bhisma Pancaka like fasting and rising earlier than usual. Bhismadeva, lying on a bed of arrows for two months at Kurukshetra, fasted for the last five days and left this world in front of his beloved Lord Krsna.
