The third community development conference took place at New Raman Reti beginning November. You can learn about our Community Development Initiative and how it developed at www.nrrcommunity.com This event presented an organized approach to serving and sharing with friends by launching Action Teams for the 10 focus areas that emerged from the CDI Survey and Conferences 1 and 2 where we “Explored” and “Analyzed” the different facets of our growing community. During this third and final conference, entitled “Implement”, we started with icebreaker exercises, followed by special presentations on team building. Audience participation was encouraged , and our teams started on the road to developing our priority issue. Through this conference I could see the tremendous potential to develop and enhance our community on many levels (such as relationship building, practical service, helping those in need, supporting our next generations) while furthering Srila Prabhupada’s movement. Hare KrishnaBy Kesava Bharati Das Goswami

To help propagate this revival, I’ve made a vow to live-stream my daily reading of your books. On the Facebook App, if one searches for “Daily Readings of Srila Prabhupada’s Books” and “likes” the page, one can hear your books, either live or at one’s convenience. Now I’m reading the Eleventh Canto of Srimad-Bhagavatam. But when I finish the Bhagavatam I’ll move on to Sri Caitanya-caritamrita and read it out loud cover to cover; then the Bhagavad-gita As It Is, cover to cover; then back to the Srimad-Bhagavatam, and so on, for the rest of my life. I seek your blessings, Srila Prabhupada, to complete this vow. Continue reading "Letting Srila Prabhupada Speak for Himself

Gopastami
Giriraj Swami

Today is Gopastami, the day on which Krishna and Balarama and other boys Their age, who previously had tended the calves, were given charge of the cows. This event is described in Srimad-Bhagavatam (10.15.1):

tatas ca pauganda-vayah-sritau vraje
  babhuvatus tau pasu-pala-sammatau
gas carayantau sakhibhih samam padair
  vrndavanam punyam ativa cakratuh

“When Lord Rama and Lord Krsna attained the age of pauganda [six to ten] while living in Vrndavana, the cowherd men allowed Them to take up the task of tending the cows. Engaging thus in the company of Their friends, the two boys rendered the land of Vrndavana most auspicious by imprinting upon it the marks of Their lotus feet.”

As stated in the purport: “Since Lord Krsna’s spiritual body had apparently grown slightly in age and strength, the senior men of Vrndavana, headed by Nanda Maharaja, decided to promote Krsna from the task of herding calves to the status of a regular cowherd boy. He would now take care of the full-grown cows, bulls, and oxen. Out of great affection, Nanda Maharaja had previously considered Krsna too small and immature to take care of full-grown cows and bulls. It is stated in the Karttika-mahatmya section of the Padma Purana:

suklastami karttike tu
  smrta gopastami budhaih
tad-dinad vasudevo ’bhud
  gopah purvam tu vatsapah

‘The eighth lunar day of the bright fortnight of the month of Karttika is known by authorities as Gopastami. From that day, Lord Vasudeva served as a cowherd, whereas previously He had tended the calves.’

“The word padaih indicates that Lord Krsna blessed the earth by walking on her surface with His lotus feet. The Lord wore no shoes or other footgear but walked barefoot in the forest, giving great anxiety to the girls of Vrndavana, who feared that His soft lotus feet would be injured.”

The celebration was meant for only the cowherd men and boys, but Srimati Radharani also wanted to enjoy the fun, and so, because of Her resemblance to Subala-sakha, she donned his dhoti and other garments and joined Krishna. Thus, on this occasion, in temples in Vrindavan and elsewhere, Srimati Radharani is dressed as a cowherd boy.

Hare Krishna.

Giriraj Swami

Vrndavana Braj Parikrama – Day 2
→ KKSBlog

Written by Rukmini dd

“The Varsana parikrama is situated around the Sriji Temple. The different hills here are demigods incarnating in this way to place the feet of the devotees on their heads.”

Sancaricor

First, we got lost but there is no wrong turn in Vrndavana. Following in the footsteps of the spiritual master, each step takes us closer to Krsna. A narrow path surrounded by soft sands leads us to Sancaricor; a narrow valley where two hills meet. Here, Krsna would stop the gopis who carried their butter and cream on their heads and demand a tax for passage. In the same line, the villagers line the pathway, “Daan karo.”

In a nearby clearing Maharaja perches on a small parapet with his back against a pillar, gazing at the hills and singing kirtan. Rectangular rocks with a smooth finish and mega-sized cow dung patties form the backdrop. “We are chanting for pure love of God”, he says. “Therefore our chanting is the echo of the chanting of the pure devotees. It releases the karma that people leave here. It is our service to the dhama.” We respond to each mantra, aiding his offering.

He focuses on how the pastimes of Krsna are of two types: prakat (manifest) and aprakat (unmanifest). But what is manifest to us? Not much. We do not see a tax collector with a peacock feather. He questions the village boys if they have seen such a tax collector. “He is just now coming,” they assure him. It is through the acaryas that the unmanifest can become visible to us.

Another theme was that all the activities of the spiritual world are of deep intensity. When Krsna left, the residents of Vrndavana simply stood there. Their bodies remaining but their minds had gone along with Krsna. We have come to Vrndavana but part of our minds are still in the places we have come from. Are we really in Varsana? But through the acaryas, what is unmanifest can become visible and we can begin to appreciate the spiritual world and develop a desire to go there.

Moor Kutir

Leaving Sacaricor, we journey up a long winding staircase to Moor Kutir. The priests urge us to take off our socks and cover our heads before entering. The altar is a little obscure but we sit in the hall decorated with peacocks opposite the temple and Maharaja leads kirtan. The devotees soon rise and dance. In this place, Radha and Krsna dress up as peacocks and dance. “You are all dancing like peacocks,” he says.

In the parikiya relationship, there is no obligation as there would be in marriage. Srimati Radharani must conquer Krsna at each moment. Maharaja applies this meditation to our own devotional service. No matter how much service we render and for however long, we may get some recognition from Krsna but it never affords us any right to Krsna’s mercy. We also must conquer Krsna again and again.

A panda wants us to leave and Maharaja humbly obliges. “We are given a fleeting moment of meditation, but in such a place, a moment is all we need.”

The Rajpur Temple

Above Moor Kutir is a pathway leading to the Rajpur Temple. This route is significantly shorter than our previous visit to Varsana. “I took some shortcuts,” Maharaja said, and we were grateful.

Someone says that the deities are Koshal Bihari. Maharaja confirms that the temple was built by the Jat kings from Bharatpur. It is beautiful sandstone structure and we find a peaceful spot on the left. A mellow kirtan gears up to rocking quickly and soon we attract an audience. Maharaja throws his hands in the air, raising the enthusiasm of the pilgrims in orchestra fashion.

Maharaja reads from the Nectar of Devotion. He expands on the perception of love in this world and how it infiltrates ISKCON: Romeo and Juliet with Radha and Krsna in the background. Even if we find a love that is pure it will not transcend death. He gives the example of the Taj Mahal. Even if it would transcend death for a while, it cannot transcend birth and death for in the next lifetime you will not even recognise the person. But who can avoid the Romeo and Juliet syndrome? The essence is that we want to be loved.

“Covered in this way who is really in Varsana? What should we do if we are miles away? Should we cry? What if we have no tears? All we can do is call out for the mercy of Lord Caitanya, Srila Prabhupada and their representatives.”

Sriji Temple

The climax of our journey is at the ethereal Sriji Temple. Located at the peak of Varsana, it boasts a breathtaking view of the villages below. The temple is busy as it always is, with ancient deities of Radha and Krsna. We move to the back balcony and immerse in harinama led by Harinamananda Prabhu. Bystanders join in. They dance and chant and take selfies. We create a stir. Maharaja dances the two-hundred-step descent to the buses.

Srinivasa Acharya is one of the most important personalities in the religious history of Bengal, perhaps the most important Vaishnava teacher in the generation immediately following Shri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

He is chiefly remembered as the illustrious disciple of Gopala Bhatta Goswami and Jiva Goswami. His achievements include delivering the writings of the Goswamis from Vrindavana to Bengal, converting King Birhambir to Vaishnavism, and originating the Manohar Shoy style of kirtana.

At Kheturi, Bengal, he co-organised the first Gaura Purnima Festival (celebrating the anniversary of Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s appearance in this world), which Narottama, Shyamananda, and thousands of other Vaishnavas attended.

I Like Trains

Much as I like walking, I also like taking the train.  I suppose I did have some choices on how to get to this bedroom community of Ottawa.  One option was catching a ride with other commuters going from Toronto to our Canadian Leaders Sanga.  Walking was not an option.  It would take me at least two weeks to get to Russell.  Out of the question.

I like the train because of the ample leg room.  Scenery is nice.  I see a gorgeous trail running edge-wise along Lake Ontario.  It is mouth-wateringly tempting.  https://www.instagram.com/p/Bp-4OszA7SG/?utm_source=ig_share_sheet&igshid=109ehdkcksobj

I also had my peaceful moments.  I enjoyed reading from Mukunda’s book, where he describes the recording of the maha mantraat the studio on Abbey Road, London, when George Harrison insisted there be some multiple voices to support the main singer, Yamuna, who had that golden voice. George was practical.  He brought in some secretaries, agents and janitors, whomever he could grab, to create a greater volume of sound.  It was spontaneous and it was teamwork.  I love the book, Miracle on Second Avenue.

Okay, so I arrived at Ottawa’s Via Rail Train Station, where Mandala, one of my support persons for the U.S. walk, picked me up, and then dropped me at the arts building in Russell.  There, a group of us conducted a Govardhan Puja, which is done in India.  The story, in short, describes how young Krishna raised an amazing rock. The Herculean feat is honoured all over the planet on this day.  He executed the feat long before the invention of the train.

D Day (Diwali Day)

After a few glorious hours of Diwali calls from people, and dealing with people in general, it was time for a walk, some fresh air,, and a head clearing before the evening influx.  Diwali is indeed a big deal for a lot of people.  It’s the New Year for some.  It’s a fun fest.  It’s family-and-temple time.  It commemorates enlightenment over darkness—Ravana.

I escaped with my coat and beads in pocket to Bloor Street, then up to Christie.  There, many eateries, pubs and cafes dominate.  I passed by Home Hardware, Dollar Plus, and some ticky-tacky shops and such.  There is also the Poop Café, and it is popular.  Ever time I take a peek the place is more or less packed.

I got my break.

Then evening came upon us.  Diwali lovers started to trickle in.  They came with anticipation.  Will there be diyas(ghee lamps) to light? Will there be something exciting in the atmosphere?  A talk perhaps?  Some kirtan chants maybe?

There were no set plans to address a fair-sized group of people. There they were, mostly young folks and some children.

Okay then, Lila Mayi and Hitesh were there for the regular Wednesday chanting.  We went to the mic, started singing, and said some words about the importance of chanting. The group responded.  We even formed a circle, a huge one, and encouraged a dancing movement.  The doors to the deities opened, and I leapt out to get things cooking in the kitchen for the crowd.  It was successful. Team work works.

Mouth and Feet

Leaves were swirling in the air and the winds were fairly high, compared to most days, as I was footing my way along Dupont.  Kate and Gaurachandra had dropped me off at one of the malls along Dupont where they would pick up fresh ingredients for constructing some wraps.

“I’ll walk back to the ashram from here,” I said.  https://www.instagram.com/p/Bp4R5xogTqW/?utm_source=ig_share_sheet&igshid=ki6otktdx29p

While walking, I was contemplating the visit I had just made to my dental clinic in Brampton, where some ‘teeth work’ was done.  These mouths and teeth get satisfied with a good veggie wrap and so many other edibles.  They are also used for communication—of good messages, hopefully.

I also reflected on the series of verses from the Gitathat our morning group has been reading. For instance, Chapter 3 Verse 11, which I read to the others at 5:00 a.m., goes like this in the purport: “By performance of sacrifice, one’s eatables become sanctified, and by eating sanctified foodstuffs, one’s very existence becomes purified; by the purification of existence finer tissues in the memory become sanctified, and when memory is sanctified one can think of the path of liberation, and all these combined together lead to Krishna consciousness, the great necessity of present day society.”

So there you have it.  Our mouths are meant for sanctified food (prasadam) and it puts us in a better place. Thinking of food, I decided to make a neighbourly stop at the corner of Dupont and Bathurst, in Toronto, at the ‘Annapurna Restaurant,’ just to say hello.  Out of the pot-washing back room emerged Patrick, whom I’ve known for years.  He pulled away and walked a few blocks with me, through the swirling leaves.  Nice guy.  It’s always a bit hard to maintain cohesion, though, when talking.  Bless him.

Hare KrishnaBy Srimati Dasi

Let’s face it – trying to become a devotee in this faithless, fast, and quarrelsome age is very, very tough. If the mind is not making life difficult for us, it will be the neighbors, some authority figure, our bodies or our family. Actually, the list is endless. How to keep faith and focus in a world so obviously made for distraction?! The real challenges come in our daily dealings in life. The philosophy sounds fine in the class atmosphere, but often we lose sight of it when dealing with the “nitty-gritty” practicalities of life. This often leads to a spiritual schizophrenia. We have one sense of identity when at the temple and a very different one when we are at home or at work. What to do? Vrndavana Braj Parikrama – Day 1
→ KKSBlog

Written by Rukmini dd

The Vraj Parikrama is bursting at the seams this year. We are different. All 140 of us have come with a milieu of accents, skin tones, natures and cultures from all corners of the earth. Yet we have come to Vrindavan as family and Vrindavan is home.

We begin our pilgrimage in the early morning and load into three buses. Kadamba Kanana Maharaja smiles and chats to people in between managing logistics. He is a gracious host and guide on this sacred trail. Today we journey to Dhruva Tila in Madhuvan.

A five-year-old prince is insulted by the harsh words of his step mother who denounces him access to both his father’s lap and the kingdom. His heart, burning with the insult, festers with the need for revenge and he desires a kingdom greater than the material creation. He is told by his mother that only the Supreme Lord can fulfill such a desire and that He can be found in the forest. So he leaves home for the forests in search of Krsna.

Maharaja also chooses the bushy path towards Dhruva Tila, avoiding the noisy traffic, where our buses finally stop. Dhruva meets Narada, is given a process of sadhana and is sent to Madhuvan. We cross the soft sandy paths of Madhuvan leading to the temple honoring Dhruva, his guru – Narada; and Lord Narayana – who graced Dhruva with His darshan by the mercy of Narada.

Maharaja approaches the Dhruva lila with a fresh perspective. Narada instructs Dhruva to give up his enmity and be saintly. But Dhruva, deeply identifying as a ksatriya, sees the value of his instructions but could not embrace them in his heart. Narada then offers him a process of sadhana that would help achieve his goal yet purify him. However, Maharaja made the salient point that if Dhruva had embraced the transcendental instruction, he would have saved himself a lot of trouble. He made the distinction between following the orders of the spiritual master and wholeheartedly aligning ourselves with his mood.

This was a skillful link to the essence of his offering on Srila Prabhupada’s disappearance day. Lord Caitanya was surrounded by three circles when dancing at Ratha Yatra. The inner circle was his closest associates. So too was Srila Prabhupada. The outer circle is those who were touched by Prabhupada but may still be distracted. The inner circle is those who had complete focus on Srila Prabhupada’s desire. Denying the transcendental instruction placed Dhruva – and maybe us – on the outer circle. “You cannot get to the inner circle just by initiation,” Maharaja commented. We prayed at Dhruva Tila to align ourselves with the mood of the spiritual master with single-minded focus.

After a pleasant breakfast at the base of the temple, which was peaceful except for the occasional appearance of a maddened bull, we loaded the buses once more. Destination: Talavan. This is where Lord Balarama tackled a bunch of demon asses by spinning them unconscious and hurling them into huge Taal trees. A very original move, no?

We reach the temple of Lord Balarama with a smaller Krsna on his right and Revati on the left. Balarama is blackish. It is generally mentioned in this regard that Balarama had been so absorbed in the meditation in Krsna that he assumed the colour of Shyam. “That’s the way to chant,” Maharaja comments. We first head out for the roof in the stinging midday sun. “Some austerity is needed in the dhama,” said Maharaja. Some dust, heat, crowd and noise – the hooter of our bus is an extremely high pitched version of a horror movie soundtrack! But this is the price to be paid for the lap of Krsna, Vrndavana. But Maharaja, being merciful, soon led us to the shaded courtyard.

Maharaja has planned this parikrama as a meditation. It is no coincidence that we approach Lord Balarama on the first day. He represents the adi-guru and is the giver of spiritual strength. Maharaja makes the important connection that Lord Balarama’s very essence is service to Krsna. We pray to Him for such a service attitude because through service we experience joy. That joy is the crux of spiritual strength. That joy is a gift from Lord Balarama.

We head back to Krsna Balarama Mandir having planted prayers in sacred places. Precious seeds of instructions toss in our minds searching for our hearts.
