Fixing the Mind.
Chaitanya Charan Das: When something doesn’t work properly, we need to fix it. We all need to fix our mind because it frequently malfunctions by getting distracted. It frets over the unchangeable, craves for the undesirable, and worries about the unpredictable. By its unnecessary and unhealthy fixations, it sabotages our capacity to deal with life’s challenges.
Still, fixing the mind on constructive things, on the things we need to do, is not easy. Dragging it from its fixations can seem like lugging a huge weight. Over time, the labor becomes too much, and we give up. And the mind promptly rushes back to its distressing obsessions.
Just as we can lift a heavy weight more easily with a lever, we can lift the mind heavy with its infatuations more easily with the lever of remembrance of Krishna. Though its fixations may be varied, the mind’s essential needs are twofold: security and pleasure. If anything threatens, it becomes fearful. If anything allures, it becomes desireful.

Krishna, being the ultimate reality, is the source of the supreme security and the supreme satisfaction. When we fix the mind on him, it first opposes, sometimes vehemently. Why? Because it is habituated to seeking security and satisfaction elsewhere. But if we persevere in focusing on him by practicing bhakti-yoga, it experiences that the security and joy coming from this divine focus are unparalleled. As this realization sinks in, the mind slowly gives up its attachments to worldly things and shifts that attachment to Krishna. A divinely attached mind focuses more readily on constructive things, making life more manageable.

No wonder the same Bhagavad-gita that acknowledges the mind’s obstinacy (6.35 – Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: O mighty-armed son of Kuntī, it is undoubtedly very difficult to curb the restless mind, but it is possible by suitable practice and by detachment.) assures that fixing it on Krishna makes our inner growth much easier (8.14 – For one who always remembers Me without deviation, I am easy to obtain, O son of Pṛthā, because of his constant engagement in devotional service.). Thus, fixing the mind on Krishna acts like the lever for fixing the mind.

Have You Ever…?

Have you ever walked through traffic in a tightly congested, city marketplace in India? You basically must dash and dodge your way through the crowd of people, scooters and cars. Cows are the least part of the problem, but they are there. Don’t think of standing still to avoid the mechanizations. You’ll be forced to move one way or another and at different speeds from stop to start.

I thought that Ujjain was a smaller city. Yes, it is, but it’s a half-million population crammed in tight quarters, and during Diwali, it makes it feel like you’re in China. On top of that, with things coming at you from all directions, you’ve got sounds of engines, bells, whistles and car horns, all mostly at a higher pitch. It’s quite the contrast from Ely, Nevada, during the U.S. walk, when one morning I found myself in the midst of three hundred bikers all revving it up with their roaring Harley Davidsons. There the sound reached your gut.

Anyway, I was out in the streets, practically holding hands with Kamalaksha from Indore, shopping for possible drama costumes. At one point in the circle of commotion, I wondered if it was worth the endeavour. Finally, we found an outlet where theatre-wear was in stock and I managed to pick up some cheap costumes that I can adjust when I get back home.

In Ujjain, I’m really happy attending meetings with fellow monks. The sanga (company) is worth my stay here. They are my brothers.

What sets me apart from them is that I’m a drama swamiwho has to have his tools to work with.

Getting Around

Bhakti Caru Swami is the host of our sangha meetings and he arranged a special treat for his visitors.  This morning we were bussed to three sacred places. The first was the popular temple of Maha Kaleshvara, where the Shiva Linga is adored.  Second, we were bussed to Ram Ghat by the Shipra River. Here Ram came, thousands of years ago, to honour the last rites of His father. Finally, we were taken to the school where Krishna and His brother, Balarama, were formally educated. It is called the Sandipani Muni School. Tucked away in a fertile green area are the well-maintained grounds of this location of worship.

I took a fancy to the cows who are well fed and hitched to trees in their pasture. I could see they are handled with love as many entities are in India. Relationships and love are very valued in this great land, but you also see neglect of some sectors of society. Poor folks don’t always have an option of schooling.  Neglected is the environment, like most places on our precious planet. I was remarking to Bhakti Chaitanya Swami while we bus-rode back, how trucks and cars make up the landscape and villages.

Fortunately, our meetings are held in this more decent and smaller city, unlike Mumbai, Delhi or Kolkata. It makes for a conducive space for contemplation. And the temple, well, it’s real pretty. On this Saturday evening, I was asked to lead the song in reverence to Damodara, Krishna as a child. The follow-up kirtan chant, was quite explosive.

On 26 July 1976 ISKCON Founder-Acharya, His Divine Grace Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada, was meeting in London with George Harrison (world-renowned as a member of the Beatles). Srila Prabhupada told George about a famous poem written in the Sanskrit language many centuries ago by the great spiritual master, Srila Rupa Goswami, which describes how there is unlimited nectar contained within the two syllables of Lord Krishna’s name: “Krish” and “Na.” Prabhupada advised George, “In your next record, you can give this.” But so far as we know, George did not do this. Now this famous poem translated into English has been made into a song by Sankarshan Das Adhikari for all of the world to enjoy and be benefitted by.

Today is the first day of the holy month of Kartika! This is Srimati Radharani’s special month, the month most dear to Krishna. We hope this update finds you happily experiencing the sweet sanctity of this special month. We finished renovations to our prasadam distribution facility in Radha Kunda – new flooring, roofing, and walls. It is now a more welcoming space for the ladies who come here daily for hot, fresh, wholesome meals. It is common during this month to take up a vrata, or vow of austerity in order to reduce bodily demands and offer oneself in service and surrender to the Supreme Lord. At our ladies’ request, we will be simplifying the meals using only very basic spicing and vegetables. It is our great honor to be able to facilitate their sadhana or spiritual practices. You may have noticed that the tiles of the Lalita Kunda benches were chipping and badly in need of repair. Now they are covered with red standstone! …a hardy and durable material which should stand the test of time and use. As usual, the daily cleaning continues. The Kartika crowds are already here! The compassion exhibited by Parikshit Maharaj is indeed exemplary. GBC mid-term meeting

The GBC Body met at ISKCON Ujjain on the invitation of HH Bhakti Caru Maharaja, this year’s GBC Chairman. The mid-term meeting is held at a different location every year and next year it will be at ISKCON Kanpur.

The meeting is usually a strategic planning session with discussions on constitution, outreach preaching, communication etc. The GBC also spent two days with the Indian Bureau members who are responsible for overseeing ISKCON’s activities in India.

TKG students learn cooking from Sri Avirhotra Prabhu.

Cooking with children in schools promotes the lifetime skill of healthy cooking starting at a young age. Introducing cooking in schools has many benefits:

  • Children may try new and healthy foods.  Recent research published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics indicates that children engaged in tactile experiences, such as handling foods, have less food neophobia (food fear) and greater acceptance of eating a variety of foods.
  • A kitchen is a learning lab for children that can involve all of their senses. While kneading, tossing, pouring, smelling, cutting, and feeling foods they have fun and learn without being aware of it.
  • Children tend to skip less healthy prepared or processed snack foods as they prepare their own food more.
  • Recent research indicates that nutrition knowledge may be incomplete without the experiential learning or hands-on activities associated with food preparation that involves handling food and cooking equipment.
  • Children learn lifetime skills through practicing basic math skills such as counting, weighing, measuring, tracking time; they also gain social skills by working together and communicating in the kitchen.
  • Teaching cooking to youth is an opportunity to teach nutrition education such as planning meals and make smarter food choices.
  • Cooking can aid children in acceptance of responsibility. Each child has a task to complete to contribute the meal preparation and cleanup.
  • Cooking in schools can build positive memories that promote future healthy, enjoyable cooking elsewhere.

It is wonderful to watch older students helping younger students, to witness students persisting through challenges and to see students of all ages sharing their wisdom with each other as they problem-solved through the tasks at each station.
We look forward to a whole semester of facilitating activities that are designed to promote the vitally important 21st Century skills of creativity, problem-solving and collaboration.
