Hare Krishna Taipei: Four weeks ago, I got a phone call from Fu-Jen Catholic University Department of Religious Studies. That student told me that “they” were going to do a report at school about Hinduism and Hare Krishna in Taiwan, so I started preparing a lot of information and papers for them. I suggested them to choose some important topics which I strongly recommended to study about ISKCON’s history, Srila Prabhupada and Krishna, preview Bhagavad Gita As It Is if they would like to, give them some useful handouts which explain the details of worshipping deities, cleaning, arti, some beautiful photos of the altar at ISKCON Taipei. We had contacted with each other many times, finally last Sunday all the students could visit our center together. They interviewed us and asked many good and deep questions. I was very happy that they showed they really wanted to know more about ISKCON in Taiwan. After two hours interview, we took this photo before we greeted to the deities. I remember I only slept for 3 hrs after I finished making the garlands and then I went back to the temple to meet them last Sunday afternoon. My body was tired but my heart was full of blessings from the Lord ……..

Indradyumna Swami: This afternoon we dove into an ocean of nectar in Yekaterinburg, Russia by chanting the holy names of Krsna throughout the city on a beautiful spring day. People clapped and waved as the kirtan party passed by. As devotees distributed books and prasadam I thought how pleased Srila Prabhupada must be to see the samkirtan movement spreading to every corner of the world.

May 8. ISKCON 50 – S.Prabhupada Daily Meditations.
Satsvarupa dasa Goswami: Nitya-siddha.
Prabhupada never claimed to be a nitya-siddha, a soul who has never fallen down to the material world. Yet Prabhupada had the symptoms of such a great soul. A sadhana-siddha is a conditioned soul who is perfected by the performance of the rules and regulations of devotional service. Krpa-siddha is one who attains perfection through the special mercy of the Lord or His pure devotee. But a nitya-siddha is extremely rare in this world.
Uddhava was a nitya-siddha. He had the same form as Krishna (svarupa-mukti). Even as a child he was always engaged in the “play of transcendental realization.” Prabhupada, like Uddhava, played with the forms of Radha-Krishna as a child, bathing Them, feeding Them, and worshiping Them. He also held the Ratha-yatra festival with his small playmates and would go across the street to visit the Radha-Govinda Temple daily. Prabhupada said of himself that he thought he had ample opportunity to engage in sinful life, being born in an aristocratic family; but he never did. “And throughout my whole life I did not know what is illicit sex, intoxication, meat eating and gambling. So far my present life is concerned, I do not remember any part of my life when I was forgetful of Krishna.”

The Art of Krishna Consciousness, May 2, Tuscan Arizona
Giriraj Swami

05.02.16_Tuscon_AZ“Many devotees have commented that it is better to go deep in Krishna consciousness than to go broad—going here and there looking for different philosophies in different places. I thought of a devotee of Caitanya Mahaprabhu named Mukunda. Caitanya Mahaprabhu would occasionally just be in the mood of giving mercy and calling people forward to get mercy from him. He was doing this at Srivasangam—the home of Srivas Pandit. He was calling and calling devotees and giving benedictions and giving benedictions. But, he didn’t call Mukunda. Srivas Pandit asked ‘Why aren’t you calling Mukunda?’ Caitanya Mahaprabhu replied. ‘When Mukunda is with us he speaks like one of us but when he is with the Mayavadis he talks like a Mayavadi. Its like he is offering Me a lotus flower with one hand and hitting Me on the head with a club with the other hand. So, that is why I am not calling him.’ There is more to the story and it did have a happy ending—He did call him eventually.

Its like you are digging for water. So, you go down three feet and say. ‘I’ve been digging so much, I’ve already gone down three feet and I haven’t hit water, let me try somewhere else.’ Then you go somewhere else and dig three feet then move on and again dig three feet at another place. If you had just stayed where you were and just kept going deeper—three feet, six feet, nine feet, twelve feet—you would have eventually hit water.”

Vyasa Puja 2016: Day 2, Part 3
→ KKSBlog

Written by Nandan

Evening festivities in the Community Hall…

The display in the community room was not as elaborate as last year but it was pretty and sparkly. There was a table with deities of Krsna and Balaram with a couple of Gopas surrounded by various flowers, stars and foliage. The floor near the deity table was enveloped in green grass-like paper and numerous bees and flowers were hanging from the ceiling. It was sweet and simple but the Vrindavan effect was certainly there.

To be fair, it didn’t matter too much. The community room was heaving as expected and the devotees were in a jubilant mood after all the day’s events, especially the 13 new additions to the Gaudiya Vaishnava Parampara!

After some excellent kirtans to start off the program; there was a great drama by a group of talented ladies. The play was all about the value of association of a pure devotee. It was actually quite a lengthy, sprawling play with many, many characters including Vishnu, Narada Muni and various demigods. The effort that the ladies put into the play was impressive. The makeup, costumes, soundtrack and of course the funny acting! At one point, the ladies had forgotten their lines. But it wasn’t a bad thing; the play was so humorous that even when they forgot their lines, it just contributed to all the fun! As expected, they received a tremendous response from the audience. A joyful presentation indeed!

VP_2016 (18) VP_2016 (11)

From a group of budding young actors, to a very distinguished thespian of many years, renowned entertainer and Prabhupada disciple, Parividha Prabhu was in town, giving his association to this year’s Vyasa Puja celebrations! With Prabhu gracing us with his presence it was natural for him to present something for Krsna’s pleasure and our education. This time, it was a slide show of old photos of himself in his younger days with Srila Prabhupada. In the background was a soundtrack of cabaret style music and Parividha would sing beautifully to the music. Technically it was a great performance – Prabhu’s vocal range is awesome and the way he can hold his high vibrato notes is something to behold. In another life, one can easily imagine him as one of those classic Hollywood crooners like Frank Sinatra. But more than the technical aspect was the emotional content. It was a very poignant presentation, and the lyrics were full of candour, hope and at times a sense of pathos.

As Maharaj had said earlier on that day, spiritual life is full of ups and downs. And Parividha Prabhu’s songs really embodied that in a deeply personal way. There was a sense of regret in his songs of not appreciating Srila Prabhupada enough when he was around. Yet at the same time, there was the mood of carrying on despite the setbacks, just carry on going. The songs really served as an example for the young generation to learn from – to avoid the mistakes and regrets of the past… and build a better future.

VP_2016 (27) VP_2016 (21)

Maharaj also appreciated Parividha Prabhu’s effort and would refer to his presentation a few times in his subsequent lectures. Maharaj then finished of the evening with a final kirtan that carried on late into the night. Whenever Maharaj does his kirtans, it’s so easy to lose all sense of time and just immerse oneself in the holy name. But this time there was also a faint thought in the back of one’s mind that maybe, maybe this time Maharaj shouldn’t go for it. Better to get one’s health back in full form and then go for it full throttle, right? Even though Maharaj doesn’t like all the constant fuss over his health, still the concern was there. As I’m sure it was in the back of many people’s minds. Anyhow all’s well that ends well and it was a fantastic end to a fantastic day. Afterwards devotees and disciples were clamouring for his association as well as hugging each other like they were all long lost friends. The whole thing was like a reunion of a seriously massive family.

The following is an excerpt from what newly initiated disciple Mandapa Prabhu, had to say about the concluding kirtan:

“Maharaj’s kirtan was sooo nice! I mean it didn’t go straight in, it started off low key. It was a proper slow burner but Maharaj soon pumped it up and it just started getting more and more ecstatic. He really has this incredible ability to carry everyone along on a wave of pure joy. Just the very sound of his voice allows me to focus on the mantra and remember Krsna. I strongly feel in my heart that he has a very, very close connection to Krsna. The whole experience made me feel such bliss! Tonight’s kirtan was also very special for me for another personal reason; it was my first kirtan after getting initiated. So it’s an experience I will always remember for the rest of my life.”

HH Kadamba Kanana Maharaj ki Jai!

Everything comes from Krishna’s Name, May 2, Patagonia, Arizona
Giriraj Swami

05.02.16_01.Patagonia_AZGiriraj Swami read and spoke from Srimad-Bhagavatam 2.3.17 at the Bikram Yoga Center in Patagonia Arizona.

As a highly potent drug injected intravenously acts at once on the whole body, the transcendental topics of the Lord injected through the ear by the pure devotee of the Lord can act very efficiently. Aural realization of the transcendental messages implies total realization, just as fructification of one part of a tree implies fructification of all other parts. This realization for a moment in the association of pure devotees like Sukadeva Gosvami prepares one’s complete life for eternity. (SB 23.17 purport)

“Even if we don’t have that kind of realization, we have some realization. For example while travelling, I have been experiencing what Srila Prabhupada said that when you hear someone’s name, you immediately remember everything about the person—the persons form, qualities and pastimes. Now we have these mobile devices. If there is affection for someone then when a notice comes up. ‘Oh, Here is a message from His Holiness Rtadvaja Swami.’ Then immediately just from the name I remember his form, his qualities, his pastimes, our good experiences together. It all comes just from the name. So, hearing God’s name prepares us for eternal life.”

In Devotees We Trust
→ Dandavats

By Kesava Krsna Dasa

There is a lot of emphasis nowadays on the need for love and trust among devotees. We can cite the six loving exchanges between us. We can also use the strength of the often quoted, “your love for me will be shown by how you cooperate.” In spite of our efforts to promote this ideal, can we ever expect a situation where love and trust dominates in all of our devotee interactions? Are we too big as an organisation to assume that this will happen? Can each of us get by simply by being polite to each other, and at least like one another? Does our respectful observance of behaviour in relation to senior and junior devotees inhibit such love? When many of us remain distant from one another, does it make it harder to earn such trust? Don’t Compromise Your Principles
→ Dandavats

Hare KrishnaBy Mahatma das

The first thing Srila Prabhupada explained to a friend of mine in their three hour meeting on how to run his business was this: "Don't compromise your principles." Srila Prabhupada often said, "I never compromised my principles. If I compromised I could have attracted more people, but then I would have given them a watered down product that would have neither been genuine nor pure. I was not prepared to compromise my principles even if no one joined my mission." The truth is that many people joined his mission; and they joined precisely because he did not compromise his principles! My friend recounts that when his industry was going through difficult times, his company continued to prosper and grow. He attributes his success to religiously following dharmic (higher order) principles. His company maintained higher principles of integrity and morality than his competitors. The result is that his company continues to be a leader in an industry where many have gone out of business. Continue reading "Don’t Compromise Your Principles

Meeting “Anthony G”, a Gaura Purnima gift.
Gadidas, April, 2016: This year, in consideration of the appearance of Lord Caitanya, we took Harinam prabhu to the park….Centenial Park… Nashville, Tn… we rented a pavilion and set up camp. The day was pristine, and we began kirtan… brought a ton of prasad, and a stack of books… We had kirtan, and about an hour or so into the effort, “Anthony G. “ rolls up on his electric cart for the disabled. Inspired by the loud kirtan Anthony G started to get animated…and suddenly got down from his assisted transport on the ground and started crawling toward the center of the kirtan…more specifically toward the girls…we felt caution…and suddenly he was lying like dandavats, and started break dancing. The kirtan moved louder and stronger watching Anthony G. do his part for the pleasure of Harinam prabhu….
He turned and indicated he wanted to get up, seeing he needed help, some devotees helped him up and back over to his mobility chair. The kirtan accelerated from all of this and we started going in a circle around a stone pillar….suddenly Anthony G gets up and starts dancing and chanting around with us, as if he had no disability… raising his arms in the air and chanting. The kirtan accelerated again, as observers watched for the next transformation. This went on for some time, and finally Anthony G returned to his chair, and kept chanting. In the meantime. He leaned over and asked who was that person in the picure…(we had a small sacred area made with pictures of Prabhupada and Panchtatva… A young Indian man told Anthony that his name was Prabhupada…and out of nowhere, Anthony raised his arms and started chanting “Prabhupada,Prabhupada, Prabhupada….well we were all astonished and the kirtan just went off the chart… and mind you, we had not chanted “Prabhupada” not even once so far… he just did that out of some inspiration from within the heart.
After an hour or so we concluded the kirtan and began reading some beautiful pastimes of Lord Caitanya from Chaitanya Bhagavat. Somewhere along the way Anthony G asked me if I would read some poetry of his…of course I agreed and found the poem he chose to be one of surrender to God… God being his only source of strength and inspiration, of complete dependence , etc… it was a fitting end to our day, and a great memory. Anthony G we will never forget. There are so many adventures awaiting out there, just waiting for the HariNam Sankirtan party to arrive and stimulate the heart.
Although most of our regulars did not make it to Centenial park, we were thinking of them, and wishing they hadn’t missed this HariNam Sankirtana adventure. Sorry, no pictures…
Hoping all is well inside and out…your servant because of his mercy, ..Gadidas

When Meat Meets India
→ Dandavats

Dwaipayan De: “George Bush was wrong. The Axis of Evil doesn’t run through Iraq, or Iran or North Korea. It runs through our dining tables. Weapons of Mass Destruction are our knives and forks. “ – Philip Wollen (Australian Philanthropist and former VP of Citibank)

In the backdrop of the Indian Government imposing a ban on Meat during certain festivals , or banning the sale of beef in certain states, it has become very important for us to understand how we get affected by such laws; whether food should be treated so seriously; and most importantly, whether such restrictions on the sale and consumption of meat is cure or a curse. Let us investigate in more detail.

It is a known fact, that in the slaughterhouses, the animals are subjected to a tremendous amount of fear and suffering. There are countless stories of how cows in fear cry, scream and sometimes fall down dead while inside or even before they are taken into the slaughterhouse. We find that the veins of dead pigs are so big which means that they have practically exploded from the fear that the pig felt and the adrenalin that was produced while it was led to the slaughter. We see how birds are abused and even scalded alive. It has been truly said that “When we suffer, we suffer as equals, and in their capacity to suffer, a dog is a pig is a bear is a boy. . . Animal rights today is now the greatest social justice issue since the abolition of slavery.”

More than 56 Billion animals are killed every year for flesh dairy and eggs. To put things into proper perspective , the total count of human casualties during world war 1 and world war 2 combined is only 97 million (source Wikipedia) , a figure which suddenly looks so less when compared to the cruelty meted out to the innocent creatures every year, just for the sake of dishing pleasure to humans.

Is Meat Eating Natural ?

…Humans have no need for animal products, and the increasing number of vegans on the planet is a testament to how easy it is to live a healthy, fulfilling life without participating in the systematic abuse and unnecessary killing that goes on in the animal industry every day.

— Angel Flinn

Sometimes, people argue, that humans are carnivores or omnivores and meat constitutes an important source of protein, without which the body, might not reach its full potential physically and mentally.

There is an excellent paper by Milton Mills, M.D., which discusses the anatomy of human body, in great detail, and goes on to show , that human beings are neither biologically carnivores or Omnivores but actually Herbivores. All the aspects of the human beings, like the orientation of the facial muscles, Jaw type, nails, teeth type, chewing manner, the enzymes in saliva, stomach type and its acidity (pH value), length of intestine, colon, functions of liver and kidney, prove that the human beings are optimized for eating exclusively plant foods.

Not only are animal products unnecessary for optimal health, an increasing number of nutritionists and health professionals are today acknowledging that animal products are harmful to our health. The World Health Organization has determined that dietary factors account for at least 30 percent of all cancers in Western countries and up to 20 percent in developing countries. When cancer researchers started to search for links between diet and cancer, one of the most noticeable findings was that people who avoided meat were much less likely to develop the disease. Large studies in England and Germany showed that vegetarians were about 40 percent less likely to develop cancer compared to meat eaters.

In the China Study by T.Colin Campbell, which arguably is the most comprehensive study on nutrition ever done, Campbell provides compelling evidence linking animal products to disease, including cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, etc.

Meat and Environment

Having a vegetarian/Vegan diet has a considerable effect on our environment. For example, the amount of potatoes we can produce from an acre of land is about 40,000 lbs compared to only 250 lbs of cow flesh supported from the same acre. When we feed plants to animals in order to eat the animal, we waste an enormous amount of food. For only one pound of cow flesh, 16 lbs of plant food and 5,000 gallons of water are required.

Compare that to 25 gallons of water for a pound of wheat. Animal agriculture is also responsible for most of the food-borne illness epidemics from water runoff. Our use of animals contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions as well as the destruction of forests for grazing. More than 250 million acres of forests are cleared every year in the US alone for this purpose.

“Livestock are responsible for 18 per cent of the greenhouse gases that cause global warming, more than cars, planes and all other forms of transport put together.” This figure comes from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

TIME Magazine agrees, saying, “It’s true that giving up that average 176 lb. of meat a year is one of the greenest lifestyle changes you can make as an individual.”

India & Vegetarianism

Vegetarianism, known in Sanskrit as Shakahara, was for thousands of years a principle of health and environmental ethics throughout India. India , has predominantly been a vegetarian country, with, the Food and Agriculture Organizations of the United Nations ranking India as the lowest consumer of meat in the world in the year 2007. Inspite of the numerous foreign invasions and barbaric influences of foreign cultures, from time to time, the Indian society still boasts more than 42% of its population surviving on a vegetarian diet even today.

Bharat, or India, has always been a land of spirituality and it is in this holy land, that we may find even a commoner practicing the highest tenets of spiritual science in his day-to-day life.

Lord Macauley delivered the following speech in the British Parliament after making his visit to India :

“I have traveled across the length and breadth of India and I have not seen one person who is a beggar, who is a thief. Such wealth I have seen in this country, such high moral values, people of such caliber , that I do not think we would ever conquer this country, unless we break the very backbone of this nation, which is her spiritual and cultural heritage, and, therefore, I propose that we replace her old and ancient education system, her culture, for if the Indians think that all

that is foreign and English is good and greater than their own, they will lose their self-esteem, their native self-culture and they will become what we want them, a truly dominated nation.”

Religion in its highest standard preaches vegetarianism, as a way to live with a minimum of hurt to other beings, for to consume meat, fish, fowl or eggs is to participate indirectly in acts of cruelty and violence against the animal kingdom.

India’s greatest saints have confirmed that one cannot eat meat and live a peaceful, harmonious life. Man’s appetite for meat inflicts devastating harm on the earth itself, stripping its precious forests to make way for pastures. How can one who eats meat practice true compassion by eating the flesh of an animal to fatten his own flesh?

On the spiritual path, we need to see the spiritual nature within all living beings, and that includes the animals as well. We must practice universal brotherhood, which means non-violence to both humans and other animals. It consists of understanding that animals also have souls. They are alive, conscious and feel pain. Those who eat meat however, because of their desires to eat animals, are not so easily able to understand the spiritual nature of all beings. All living creatures , are the same as us, in the sense that we are all children of the Same father, the Supreme Being. Thus, killing of animals shows a great lack of spiritual awareness.

The ancient Vedic text of the Manu-samhita (5.45-8) says, “He who injures innoxious beings from a wish to give himself pleasure never finds happiness, neither living nor dead. He who does not seek to cause the suffering of bonds and death to living creatures, but desires the good of all beings, obtains endless bliss… Meat can never be obtained without injury to living creatures, and injury to sentient beings is detrimental to the attainment of heavenly bliss; let him therefore shun the use of meat.”

Elsewhere in Rig Veda (10.87.16) it is mentioned “One who partakes of human flesh, the flesh of a horse or of another animal, and deprives others of milk by slaughtering cows, O King, if such a fiend does not desist by other means, then you should not hesitate to cut off his head.”

In Mahabharata (Anu.115.52-53) it is stated “Listen to me, O king of kings, as I tell you this, O sinless one, there is absolute happiness in abstaining from meat, O king. He who practices severe austerities for a century, and he who abstains from meat, are both equally meritorious. This is my opinion.”

In Srimad Bhagavatam (11.5.14) it is stated “Those who are ignorant of real dharma and, though wicked and haughty, account themselves virtuous, kill animals without any feeling of remorse or fear of punishment. Further, in their next lives, such sinful persons will be eaten by the same creatures they have killed in this world.”

From the above references, we can understand that partaking of a non-vegetarian diet is thoroughly discouraged across the Vedic scriptures.

Now, Some people might ask, then why is sacrifice of animals prevalent in the temples of Goddess Kali. The answer to this is that the Vedic literature does not offer spirituality in just one form. The spiritual processes offered in the Vedic literature is not uniform but omniform. The Vedic literature recognize that different people have different levels of adhikara or the capacity to practice spiritual life. The Sanatana Dharma , being the oldest of religions, encompasses the inclination of people who range from the morally degraded to the spiritually exalted. So, That is why for those who are so addicted to meat eating, and can’t give it up, meat eating is allowed under certain restricted conditions. So these statements in the scriptures are concessions, and not recommendations.

The process is that once in a month, on a dark moon night , such degraded persons are allowed to take some lesser animal like a goat or a pig. They have to take the animal out of the locality, where there are no people around, or in the temple grounds of Maa kali, and then while chanting the mantra “ Mam sa khadatiti mamsah” , they have to personally slit the throat of the animal.

The mantra that is recited during the sacrifice means “You are giving your life , so in your next life you will get the opportunity of becoming a human being. And I who am now killing you will become an animal, and you will kill me”.

So one day, the person, might realize the meaning of the mantra that he is reciting during the animal sacrifice, and understand the pitiable state that he is going to obtain in his next life , and therefore subsequently refrain from further slaughtering of animals. Thus the objective of such concessions is to elevate the consciousness of a person from the mode of ignorance gradually to the mode of goodness.

Similarly , according to tantric worship, the worshipers of Durga are required to have five M’s “ maans(meat), matsya(fish), madira(liquor), maithuna(sex) and mura(parched rice) to worship her properly. These forms of regulated worship are the only means by which such degraded minds can be enticed to glorify God.

So this concession of engaging in lowly food habits is given to the worshippers under the modes of ignorance, so that they can eventually elevate themselves to the modes of goodness or even higher, where the basis of worshipping God, would neither be fear or material gains but pure Love.

In the process of bhakti-yoga, which is the highest standard of Sanatana Dharma and the very essence of all Yogic practices, devotion goes beyond simple vegetarianism, and food becomes a means of spiritual progress. In the Bhagavad-gita Lord Krishna says, “All that you do, all that you eat, all that you offer and give away, as well as all austerities that you may perform, should be done as an offering unto Me.” So offering what we eat to the Lord is an integral part of bhakti-yoga and makes the food blessed with spiritual potencies. Then such offered food is called prasadam, or the mercy of the Lord.

The Lord also describes what He accepts as offerings: “If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, fruit or water, I will accept it.” Thus we see over here, that the Lord explicitly mentions what food He accepts as offering. He does not accept meat, fish ,eggs, etc but only those that can be obtained naturally without causing harm to others.

So on the spiritual path eating food that is first offered to God is the ultimate perfection of a vegetarian diet. The Vedic literature explains that the purpose of human life is reawakening the soul’s original relationship with God, and accepting prasadam is the way to help us reach that goal.

By Krsnanandan Das and Bhagavati Kripa dd

For the pleasure of Guru and Gauranga, and by the mercy of Srila Prabhupada, on the occasion of 50 years of ISKCON, Narsimha Institute for Children Education of ISKCON Mira Road conducted Summer Camp at 50 places in the year 2016. This Summer Camp was conducted in almost 45 residences and 5 schools.

Summer Camp classes for children started from 14th April at some residences and it continued for 10 days. Every place had a good response of enthusiastic children. The children who attended the summer camp enjoyed learning shlokas of the 12th Ch of Bhagavad Gita, singing bhajans like Madhurashtakam, Guruvashtakam, hearing the stories of ‘Mighty HANUMAN’, playing Krishna Conscious Games and had the feeling that they had chosen the best Summer Camp.

On 23rd April, 2016, the respective teachers invited all the students and their parents from almost 30 places. So there were 300 children attending Darshan Arati at ISKCON Mira Road temple on that day. Then H.G. Kamala Lochan Prabhuji (temple president), addressed the children. He spoke about the qualities which Lord Krishna had mentioned in the 12th chapter of Bhagavad Gita. He stressed on the verse ‘advesta sarva bhutanam….’, and told the children the definition of kindness. The children loved his lecture and learned many things from it. After the lecture, H.G. Kamala Lochan Prabhuji himself distributed certificates to the children who attended the Summer Camp, which inspired them to be a part of ISKCON. At 10am they had delicious breakfast prasadam followed by games and Krishna-Balaram movie. Thereafter, the children were fortunate to get the association of H.G. Bhima Prabhuji (Srila Prabhupada disciple) who addressed all of them for few minutes. Then all the teachers got gifts from his hands. After all this, the children were getting excited to participate in the Quiz Competition taken by H.G. Kamala Lochan Prabhuji inspite of his busy schedule. First teams of 5-6 children were made and Prabhuji started asking them questions from the ‘Mighty Hanuman’ book. By this the children got to know many details about Ramayan which they didn’t know initially. At the end, those children who had sincerely read the Hanuman book were the ones who won. The program ended with a small kirtan. All the children and their parents enjoyed this picnic and it became their unforgettable day.

From the next day, the children without getting tired started preparing for their models and speech for the exhibition which was going to be held on 1st May, 2016.

Inline image 2

On 1st May 2016, at the Balaji hall, ISKCON Mira Road, there was the Spiritual Science Exhibition with 120 models and total 200 children standing near the models to explain the wonderful pastimes of the Lord to the devotees who came to visit the exhibition. The theme of the exhibition was based on the 5 most powerful Bhakti Principles which was instructed by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu to Srila Rupa Goswami. The 5 principles are:

1) To chant the holy names of the Lord

2) To hear and discuss scriptures

3) To associate with devotees

4) To visit the holy places which are connected to Lord Krishna

5) To worship the deity

Based on the 1st principle, few children from Mira Road had made models on the stories explaining the importance of the Holy Name.

Based on the 2nd principle, children from different places had made models on the 10 subject matters of Srimad Bhagavatam, Bhagavad Gita Chapter 12 and 15, Pastimes of Panchatattva and Ramayan.

Based on the 3rd principle some children from Bhayander, Vapi and Mira Road had made models on the pastimes of Vaishnava Acharyas, Associates of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Sripad Madhvacharya and Sripad Ramanujacharya.

Based on the 4th principle, many children had made models on Navadwip Mandal Parikrama, Jagannath Puri Parikram, Vrindavan Parikrama and Pandharpur Dham.

Based on the 5th principle, children explained models on how Srila Prabhupada took up so many struggles to establish ISKCON temples all over the world, having the best system of Deity worship. Some children also made models about Tulasi Devi and Bhoga offering to the deities.

The exhibition continued till 3pm. Inspite of standing in the exhibition for hours, the children and their parents were ready to attend the Narsimha Katha by H.G. Kamala Lochan Prabhuji from 2nd May to 7th May. The children performed various dramas, dance and singing based on Lord Narsimha’s and Lord Jagannath’s pastimes during the program.

Thus, we had total of 700 children getting introduced to Krishna Consciousness. Everyday all of them wrote Hare Krishna Mahamantra 5 times, they did Tulasi arati and chanted one round of Japa apart from Shravanam and Kirtanam.

Akshaya Tritiya – The Ultimate Day of Giving
- TOVP.org

Dear Devotees and TOVP Donors,

Please accept our humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Greetings from Sridham Mayapur, and blessings from Sri Sri Radha-Madhava, Panchatattva and Nrsimhadeva.

This Monday, May 9, is Akshaya Tritiya, one of the most important days in the Vedic calendar. Akshaya Tritiya is the appearance day of Lord Parasurama, and it is also the day that the Ganges descended to the earth. Most devotees know it as the beginning of Candana-yatra, but actually many of Lord Krishna’s other pastimes also took place on this day, specifically those which highlight Krishna’s generous and intimate reciprocation with his devotees.

The very word Akshaya means “that which never diminishes”. Any service or charity one performs on this day will be paid back many times over. On this day, Sudama gave the Lord a tiny portion of chipped rice and was rewarded with untold opulence. Draupadi was protected by Krishna twice on this day, once when He provided her an unlimited sari at the dice game in return for a tiny piece of cloth, and later, when she needed to provide food for Durvasa muni, the Lord took a single grain from her pot and satisfied the hunger of all the sages.

“If the devotee offers something to the Lord, it acts for his own interest because whatever a devotee offers the Lord comes back in a quantity a million times greater than what was offered. One does not become a loser by giving to the Lord; one becomes a gainer by millions of times.”

Krsna Book Ch. 81, The Brahmana Sudama Blessed by Lord Krishna

Traditionally, this is the best day for starting important endeavors. Vyasadeva and Ganesa chose this day to start writing the great epic Mahabharata, for example, and every year construction of the huge Ratha carts in Puri also starts on this day.

ISKCON’s most important project at the present time is the Temple of the Vedic Planetarium, so please consider taking advantage of this auspicious occasion by making a contribution on this day. And if you have already made a pledge but have not yet started making payments or need to restart your payments, this would be an ideal day to do so. As Prabhupada said, you will be rewarded millions of times over.

You can find all the information you need to donate on our website: http://tovp.org/donate/seva-opportunities/

May 7. ISKCON 50 – S.Prabhupada Daily Meditations.
Satsvarupa dasa Goswami: Pleasing the Guru Means Pleasing Krishna.
Every morning we pray yasya prasadad bhagavat-prasadah, but sometimes we forget what it means. The verse means that by the grace of the spiritual master one gets the mercy of Krishna. If one does not please the spiritual master, then he has no chance of progress. (Yasya prasadad bhagavat-prasadah, you have to please the guru, not independently go to Krishna.) So I am praying to you like that. That is, I pray to you knowing that a prayer to you is as good as a prayer to Krishna. Yadyapi amara guru caitanyera dasa, Srila Prabhupada, you are the servant of the Supreme Lord. Tathapi janiye ami tanhara prakasa. You are the full manifestation – prakasa of the Lord Himself. Evening Of Kirtan
On Sat May 7,6pm-8.30pm

Kirtan is an old traditional, group meditation. It heals our body, mind and soul. Although the kirtan involves music, the underlying art of kirtan chanting is not actually about musical ability or training-it is about the heart. Everyone can participate, regardless of age or cultural background. The purpose of this music is to get us out of our heads and into our hearts. The powerful healing and transformational energies of these ancient chants can help to reconnect us to the Ever-Present and Eternal Being that lies within us all. All the mantras, melodies, and instruments of kirtan are designed to lead us toward this meditative state.
Everyone is Welcome!

Vyasa Puja 2016: Day 2, Part 2

The Initiation Ceremony

Monday, 25 April – 3.45pm and it was still crisp outside and rather muggy. But inside the temple it was very warm indeed. Warm in the physical sense from all the people assembled and warm in the subtle sense from the abundance of goodwill emanating from the vaishnavas present. First there was a sweet, old-school harinam style kirtan by Sadbhuja Prabhu followed by an introduction by Gurudas, the MC of festival this year.

Initiations_VP_2016 (15)Without much ado, the first part of the ceremony began with switching kanthi (neck) beads and performing archaman (purification). The whole set up looked gorgeous; the centre of the temple room was made into a yajna kund or sacrificial fire square. Surrounding it was an assortment of brass water pots, ghee pots, rice trays, fruit trays and multi-coloured flower garlands. The preliminary rituals were being conducted by a wonderful, gentle devotee from Bulgaria named Tulsi Prabhu.

When the initial rites were over, the microphone was handed to Maharaj. He started of by explaining how this samsara (material existence) has so many waves and we are being tossed from one intense experience to another but it’s just chewing the chewed. For example, family is everywhere – birds, cats, dogs… they’re all engaged in family life! We think we make choices according to our desires but these are not pure desires. They are desires based on the dictates of the body. And then we come into contact with Krsna. Many say they couldn’t understand the books initially but actually we didn’t want to allow the message to penetrate our consciousness. Maharaj was emphatic on this point!

Initiations_VP_2016 (33)Soon after, the devotee feels ready to give themselves to Krsna through his representative, the spiritual master. Maharaj was effectively describing the psychological journey of a sadhaka coming into Krsna consciousness. Initiation was also a time for reflecting on how many times we have tried to satisfy our senses but now, as Srila Prabhupada said, “Just give this one life to Krsna.”

Of course, initiation is not based on force but on friendship, on trust in the spiritual master, trust that the guru is a good example in his spiritual practices but also trust that he is our dear friend and we can take shelter of him. Maharaj also stressed the value of the vows we take. After all, these vows make us act on values that are higher than what we would normally do. Ultimately, they are based on scriptures through which Krsna is talking to us!

Maharaj made it clear that spiritual life isn’t always easy but we must keep going, despite all the ups and downs. And make no mistake; there will be ups and downs, he emphasized! He gave another analogy here stating that when driving in the darkness of night, we only see the white lines but in the day, we can see and appreciate the scenery. We keep going regardless.

Maharaj then turned to the subject of second initiation. This time, the emphasis wasn’t so much on vows. It was about appreciating more of Krsna and going deeper. It was a question of searching out the higher taste and a deeper inspiration.

Somehow or other we have to be inspired. Maharaj then put on a nerdy voice, saying “Yesss, yesss, yesss. I must keep my vows till I die!!” The way Maharaj did it was hysterical and everyone in the temple room was hitting the roof. The point was that spiritual life could not just be based on vows. There has to be that inspiration. All devotees need that, something they love doing for Krsna. In this way, Krsna consciousness is also light and fun and thus initiation is not just supposed to be just a heavy thing.

Maharaj concluded by asserting that initiation is a gift but not some mundane gift that runs out. It is a gift that actually grows and grows. It is essentially the Lord’s mercy; even astrology cannot predict such sukriti (good fortune). In fact, we need not bother too much with astrology; we have more important things to do like going back to Godhead…

On this note, Maharaj started off the initiations. First he instructed in Tattvati Mataji to sit next to another German Mataji, Maria, and translate to her what was going on.

Initiations_VP_2016 (24) Initiations_VP_2016 (40) Initiations_VP_2016 (49) Initiations_VP_2016 (52)

First to get initiated was our very own Ganesh from England. Maharaj named him Gaura Narayan Das, which is the understanding that Caitanya Mahaprabhu is the Supreme Personality of Godhead a truth now that Gaur Narayan Prabhu has to make his life’s mission.

Next to be initiated was Robbie from Prague who became Rasacharya Das; servant of the great Srila Rupa Goswami. Matthew from Scotland became Mandapa Das, implying one who is always connected to the Scotland temple. His wife April became Aditya Dasi, the servant of the Lord. Gunar Prabhu from Leipzig became Govinda Kund Das, named after the sacred place where amongst other things, Madhavendra Puri used to do his bhajan. Suzanne Mataji, a mother of two from Leipzig and the wife Pradyumna, became Sudevi Dasi.

Lyla from Stockholm became Lila Mohini Dasi – indicating pastimes conducted under the influence of transcendental illusion so that devotees would forget their mood of awe and reverence towards Krsna. Asami Mataji from Japan became Sangita Dasi. Rather appropriate considering she’s a singer. So now her name means to sing, specifically singing Krsna’s glories. There was also a German Mataji, Maria, who Maharaj spoke to her entirely in German and she became Madri Dasi. Also, Kavita Dasi from Prague sat in for the yajna, she received her name and beads in January.

After the first initiations, there was some more kirtan and then the yajna. For the second initiates (Harsarani dd, Champakalata dd, Navadwip Das, Purushatraya Das and Madhupandit Das), Maharaj took them away to a private room to give them their Gayatri mantras, initiating them into a brahminical standard of life for Krsna.

All Glories! All Glories! All Glories to all the first and second initiates of Maharaj’s 2016 Vyasa Puja!

Computational Irreducibility
→ Servant of the Servant

Computational irreducibility is one of the main ideas proposed by Stephen Wolfram in his book A New Kind of Science. Wolfram terms the inability to shortcut a program (e.g., a system), or otherwise describe its behavior in a simple way, "computational irreducibility". The empirical fact is that the world of simple programs contains a great diversity of behavior, but, because of undecidability, it is impossible to predict what they will do before essentially running them. The idea demonstrates that there are occurrences where theory's predictions are effectively not possible. Wolfram states several phenomena are normally computationally irreducible.

- source: Wikipedia

The behavior of a living being or a man-made system will correspond to the computation of equivalence sophistication. For example, the brain of a child versus an adult will exhibit behavior based on the computation equivalent to the brain’s sophistication. Children’s brains are not developed so they behave differently than an adult’s brain. Wolfram explains as a result of the sophistication of the system, we can only reduce its computation to a certain point after which it is irreducible thus hampering our ability to predict its future behavior in full. Wolfram thinks this is why we are not able to explain the unique unpredictable nature (undecidability) of this natural world. Basically this is a fancy way of saying scientists don’t know everything.

Because science does not fully comprehend the idea of consciousness and is unwilling to admit it within mainstream learning, scientists are coming up with new kinds of science to explain the concept of free-will within our natural world. Computation irreducibility is one such deterministic theory to explain a non-deterministic natural world.

The video captures this idea in short.

The Conch - Newsletter of the New Govardhana Community, May 2016.
MOTHERS IN ISKCON. By Ambika devi dasi. Did you know that there are seven kinds of mothers? In the Vedas it is described that these are: the biological mother; the wife of the king; the wife of the guru; the wife of a brahmana; Mother Earth; the nurse (caregiver); and the cow. Other references throughout the scriptures are made to various mothers, such as Srimati Radharani being the universal mother. Mother Parvati is mentioned, as is Mother Ganga. These mothers display munificence to those who approach them in a prayerful mood.
What is that quintessential quality of a mother? It is affectionate love for the living entity placed under her care, and, according to Vedic understanding, it also means playing a critical role in ensuring the spiritual advancement of her children. In Caitanya-caritamrta, Madhya-lila, it states: “The highest perfection of life is for a father, mother, spiritual master, husband or any other family member to help others return home, back to Godhead. That is the most preferred welfare activity for the benefit of relatives.” That is why many of our ISKCON mothers, particularly in the earlier days of ISKCON, made the supreme sacrifice of sending their children to a gurukula, so they could help perform the “highest welfare activity” for their children.

Harinam Creates History in the Middle East
→ ISKCON News

Harinam Sankirtan or the congregational chanting of the Holy Name, initiated and propagated by Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu Himself, continues to be carried out throughout the world with great pomp and splendor. However, the Middle Eastern countries, being slightly sensitive towards religious matters and public display of devotion, had never before witnessed a performance of public Harinam.
