Our Purpose in the Material World
→ Dandavats.com

By Abhaya Mudra Dasi

Even when living entities harbor inimical desires towards Shri Krishna, He satisfies them. Shri Krishna’s arrangement of male and female prototypes in the material world creates an illusion of genuine relations between two different energies. And through the interaction of male and female entities other bodies take birth. The material world mimics (or reflects in a perverted sense) the spiritual world wherein there is constant interaction of Shri Krishna with His innumerable liberated servants, friends, mothers, fathers and lovers. In the material world the variety of personal characteristics is limited only to two. The material world does not have the facility to satisfy the spiritual seeker who is after the unlimited variety of the spiritual world.

Prabhupada speaking to Brahmananda on Juhu Beach

Prabhupada speaking to Brahmananda on Juhu Beach

Today Brahmananda Prabhu was placed in his samadhi in Vrindavan, and all the devotees present felt their hearts melt with love for Srila Prabhupada and Brahmananda Prabhu. I sent an offering to for the occasion, which Bhurijana Prabhu kindly read out for me.

One thing was certain in my mind—that I would be present for the dedication of Brahmananda Prabhu’s samadhi in Vrindavan—but as Srila Prabhupada said, “I have my plans, you have your plans, and Krishna has His plans.”

Brahmananda Prabhu left his body on the appearance day of Vakresvara Pandita, one of Lord Chaitanya’s most dear associates. A contemporary of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu named Devananda Pandita had no faith in Mahaprabhu and thus avoided Him, but fortunately, Devananda Pandita developed great faith in Vakresvara Pandita and rendered service to him. And by Vakresvara Pandita’s mercy, he developed faith in Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and ultimately achieved His shelter.

Concerning this incident, Sri Caitanya-bhagavata (Antya 3.485–487) confirms the efficacy of serving pure devotees and the results one attains by doing so: “The service of Vaisnavas is superior to the service of Krsna. All scriptures, headed by Srimad-Bhagavatam, confirm this. There may be a doubt whether the servants of the Supreme Personality of Godhead will attain perfection, but there is absolutely no doubt that those who are attached to serving the Lord’s devotees will attain perfection. Therefore service to the Vaisnavas is the best means of deliverance.”

Brahmananda Prabhu had such faith in Srila Prabhupada’s service, and thus we are confident of his deliverance and ultimate destination.

Much has been and will be said about Brahmananda Prabhu’s extraordinary love for and service to Srila Prabhupada. His attachment to Srila Prabhupada was so great that any association with him, whether by vani or vapuh, markedly increased my loving feelings for Srila Prabhupada.

The last time I met Brahmananda Prabhu, in Vrindavan, I mentioned that for decades I had been getting messages from Srila Prabhupada that Brahmananda would be going back to Godhead at the end of this life. “Well,” he replied, “it’s funny you say that, because that’s not the message I’ve been getting”—which I take as his humility.

Just after Brahmananda Prabhu left, I heard a prayer, offered to Lord Chaitanya, that seemed to reflect his mood in relation to Srila Prabhupada—and the mood for which I aspire. “Birth after birth, You are our father, mother, son, and master. May we never forget Your lotus feet. O Lord, it does not matter where we take birth, but may we always have loving devotion for Your lotus feet.”

In any case, Brahmananda Prabhu is with Srila Prabhupada, engaged in his service, and that’s all I—or any of us—could ask for. And knowing that Brahmananda Prabhu is with Srila Prabhupada is an added impetus and incentive—an added attraction.

Brahmananda Prabhu, may your example of dedication to your spiritual master and kindness to others inspire us in our service to Srila Prabhupada and his devotees.

Please think kindly upon us and keep us close to your lotus feet, that we may engage in everlasting service to our eternal lord and master in the association of all his beloved servants.

Your eternal, aspiring servant,

Giriraj Swami

Does expressing a view or feeling make you anti-iskcon?
→ simple thoughts

Freedom of speech?

Are we free in devotional circles to express a view or opinion, or is anything contrary to the management position simply aparadha?

Fear of being ostracised or seen as a trouble maker is not a healthy position to be in, this doesn’t matter if your in devotional circles or outside of devotee circles. Openness is always needed, but is their a fine line between openness and being critical?

Their is a fear that if one speaks out against something they feel is unjust that this will be seen as anti, indeed a senior devotee expressed concern that here in my blog I am anti-ISKCON because of my being honest in feelings and struggles, but also being outspoken when there is a feeling that some injustice is being done.

It is not that I am anti, but I am anti individual’s leaving and listening to the reason’s given; indeed I have come to a point several time’s were leaving appears the best option.

Forgetting that the greatest gift and motivator in all we do is love

Love motivates, Loving exchanges, The need to be wanted and accepted

Each one of us have strength’s and weaknesses, during one interview I was asked what my weakness in work is well that’s easy paperwork; so I do the legal documentation but anything else well that’s an aspiration.

My service at the temple is due to the amazing loving exchanges, care and feeling of being needed, this is love we need to feel needed understood and wanted.

Over the years I can safely say that these individual’s have been the greatest mentors, accepting my weakness working on my strength but also allowing most importantly freedom of expression; even if they disagreed with my conclusion.

I was reminded of my early day’s in ISKCON their was much freedom to express view’s even those which looking back could have been seen as offensive; but the devotee’s tolerated knowing that it would take time for changes to take place. Their aim was simple to slowly take me as an individual and make sure I had the skills for a lifetime in devotional service.

Mentor-ship should not be Tormentor-ship

Mentor-ship should be a way of getting to know the individual, their strengths and weaknesses and then come up with a way to develop them into life long devotees focused on service

Mentor-ship is not dictatorship

Mentor-ship should be a way of getting to know the individual, and then seeing how best to help the individual progress in devotional service.

Their is however one problem, if you have a single one way system and the mentor-ship system is to force an individual down this single route; this is Not Mentors-ship. For you are denying the individual.
If you then say, ow and you have to do this or that course and there is a cost involved, then sadly their will be criticism; you are running a business and initiation and montor-ship is a way of making money. It is hard to argue against this even if the reality is somewhat different; perception is everything.

So if someone expresses such a view are they ANTI, against or creating aparadha; or is it giving an opportunity to engage discuss and look at things from a different point of view; how can we engage such individual’s.

To silence those who may not agree or have a different view is not always the best way to handle things; to give individual’s a voice is necessary for a health society; remove an individual’s voice then we remove their ability to love and feel love.
Action is better than inaction; devotional service is better than devotional head sloka knowledge.

Forms tell you nothing as there is no way to verify them; best just speak to the individual and find out what their daily/weekly schedule; what is our reading and listening schedule, and what as an individual are you doing to expand Srila Prabhupada’s mission. For many this is more acceptable than a form those who speak out against form filling are not anti-iskcon or anti-managment but anti form.

Courses and classrooms have their place, some love this; but for others it’s a sure way to make them want to run away; this also includes online courses. But the greatest question should be has it moved from head knowledge to heart knowledge? The heart is the seat of motivation, it is also were our greatest love is; isn’t it better to know little but be moved into serving Srila Prabhupada’s mission than to know lot’s and still do nothing?

Discretion is something that Srila Prbhupada demonstrated; he initiated the hippy drug fuelled westerners who were unqualified on many levels, not one had filled out a form or done a course but who because of his mercy became amazing devotees. Given a chance despite disqualification they changed their hippy ways moved not by empirical knowledge but because of love, pure love.

What has kept these disciples motivated, not forms, not courses but LOVE, love for Srila Prabhupada and the friendships made of those who too LOVE Srila Prabhupada; these friendships carry one from the ups and downs of material life. Has smoothed out the mind, brought clarity were their has been nu-clarity.

Mentor-ship should be about developing this LOVE.

But also allowing the individual to express a feeling, understanding that that view even if we may strongly disagree should never be dismissed.

That we should look at how to make individual’s qualified not disqualified based on artificial demands.

For me I would say, you demand I have to do a course for second initiation; you want me to pay, this is business not devotion and sadly it doesn’t matter what you say this feeling will not go away. You want me to buy initiation! Their is no loving exchange, you are for me killing the love.

Feeling the lack of love and seeing it as simple business one wants to leave, it is my love of my guru maharaja and love for those devotee’s who truly know me that keeps me focused; but I understand why others leave based on this perception.

It returns me to my original thought, freedom of speech and expression of view should not be seen as negative, mentor-ship should not feel life tormentor-ship, and a view that is different from yours should not be seen as anti.

Srila Prabhupada understood this so simply asked that we try to get on

And if we are trying to get on then we need to understand the uniqueness of iskcon, that until the introduction of a one size fits all it could accommodate many different types of individual’s inspiring them into service.

So before you judge of condemn or say well this person is anti, ask why they are expressing such a view; may be their is an opportunity to see ow best to accommodate a different type of personality and add to the many colourful characters that makes ISKCON unique and a home for all.

New State

Yes, we moved to a new state this morning - New Jersey - after crossing the Delaware River at Easton.  From there, our route was on highway 52 and then 57.  Counting today, there are only four days ahead of us before coming to the finish line at Tompkins Square Park in Manhattan.  It will be something worth rejoicing for.

3:00 pm was the cut-off time for departing to the Big Apple (New York City), specifically 26 Second Avenue, the location of the first formal spiritual gathering held by Srila Prabhupada, our guru, in 1965, 50 years ago.  In many ways, the room at this address has not altered since that time.  At 5:30 pm people were trickling in during my lead on the kirtan.  An intro was presented by Atma Nivedan, a community member in this place.  The verse of the Bhagavad Gita that I was speaking from was 10.8.  In this text, it is expressed that a sincere seeker of the truth realizes the power of the Divine and responds by rendering service.  Yes, it is service to Krishna, who is within all of us, from where the perfection of life begins.

It was a fine list of questions that people came up with after the talk.  After a rich devotional meal, our crew made our way around the corner to the Bhakti Center where we were catching the last minutes of the Govardhan puja festival.  What are you supposed to do when eating at two places, one after the other, relishing such good food?

Going to and fro through New York by vehicle can be a challenge.  NYC is a somewhat foreign place to us all and we ended up there very late at night because of the events.  Our final destination for our accommodation was in central New Jersey at the home of Virat and Purva.  I took my final shower before retiring for the day and discovered a tick in my left shoulder. How did that come about?  Are those little things still active in November?  Tre’von and I had taken a snooze on the grass between some blue spruces and that is likely where the little fellow took on.  All and all, we had a great day. Krishna is kind.

November 10. ISKCON 50 – S.Prabhupada Daily Meditations.
Prabhupada once remarked, years later, that now that he had thousands of disciples he had many headaches, whereas in the beginning when he was alone with Krishna he was happy depending only on the Lord. This was an unusual statement because Prabhupada usually expressed that he was more enthusiastic and hopeful with more men and money. Nevertheless, he made the remark. He was not disturbed or in anxiety being alone in the jungle (New York City) with scarce apparent hopes of starting his mission. He maintained the six symptoms of surrender through saranagati: (1) Humility – (2) dedication of the self – (3) acceptance of the Lord as one’s only master – (4) the consciousness that “Krishna will surely protect me” – (5) execution of only those acts favorable to pure devotion – and (6) renunciation of conduct averse to pure devotion. And thus he was steady and peaceful in his outwardly unstable situation. He was driven by his mission and would be active in pursuing the path to carrying it out, but he would not be unduly worried when immediate results did not appear. Everything was in Krishna’s hands and Prabhupada was His surrendered instrument.

The story behind Govardhan Puja

Govardhana Puja, Go-Puja and Annakuta are all connected with the story of Lord Krishna lifting Govardhan Hill to protect the inhabitants of Vrindavan.

The day after Diwali is referred to as Annakuta, or Govardhan Puja. On this day the inhabitants of Vrindavan (Lord Krishna’s abode on Earth) would hold a harvest festival in honour of King Indra, the demigod who provided the rains essential for the harvest.

One day, however, Lord Krishna wanted to teach Indra a lesson. He convinced the inhabitants of Vrindavan to honour Govardhan Hill instead, whose fertile soil provided the grass upon which the cows and bulls grazed, and to honour the cows and bulls who provided milk and ploughed the lands. Outraged, Indra retaliated with terrifying thunderstorms. The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krishna, calmly lifted Govardhan Hill with the little finger of his left hand. For seven days and seven nights the Lord held up Govardhan Hill, providing a giant umbrella to shelter the inhabitants of Vrindavan from the torrential rain. Realizing the futility of his actions, King Indra bowed down before the Lord with folded hands and offered prayers of supplication. In this way, Lord Krishna demonstrated that He is Deva Deva, the lord of the demigods, and that any purpose for which demigods might be worshipped could easily be served by worshipping Him, the cause of all causes.

Eternal pastimes in Vrindavan
→ KKSBlog

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, 19 September 2014, Cape Town, South Africa, Evening Lecture)

damodaraNothing has changed. Everything is still the same as it was when Krsna was here 5000 years ago performing his pastimes in Vrindavan.

Krsna was stealing butter and yoghurt from the houses of all the residents of Vrindavan and all of them complained to Mother Yashoda. Mother Yashoda could not believe such things when she saw the innocent face of her son. But one day, she caught him red-handed when Krsna was there with a broken pot of yoghurt, surrounded by monkeys.

“Now I have caught you, you rascal!”

“Oh Mother, I came in here and the monkeys had just thrown this pot down – I came to chase them away!”

It was not convincing. Mother Yashoda was not at all convinced, so she wanted to punish him and chased him with a stick. Of course, she never wanted to beat him, just scare him. But then, she scared him too much and he became very afraid. At one point she said, “You are such a friend of the monkeys, giving them all this butter and yoghurt. I will treat you like a monkey!”

Krsna said, “If you treat me like this, then I’ll go and live with the monkeys.” Then she became very afraid that he would really do it and she decided to tie him up, which also did not work. The rope was always too short by two fingers! It came to a point where she was taking a ribbon from her hair to extend the cord. The neighbours were looking at the fun and they brought more silken ropes from their houses. Mother Yashoda sent everyone to bring all the rope in Vrindavan but still it remained two fingers short until she captured Krsna in the end, with her endeavour and by his mercy.

So nothing has changed. The very same condition as 5000 years ago exists now – the same two fingers are still there today. The finger for our personal endeavour and the finger for Krsna’s mercy. These can capture Krsna.

The Purpose of the Vedas
→ Dandavats.com

By His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Similarly, previously the Vedic knowledge was coming by hearing. There was no need of books. But when this age, Kali-yuga, began five thousand years ago, the Vedic scriptures were recorded. First there was only one Veda, known as Atharva Veda. Then Vyasadeva, just to make it clear, divided it into four and entrusted his various disciples to each take charge of one school of Veda. Then he wrote the Mahabharata and the Puranas to make the Vedic knowledge understandable by the common man in different ways, but the principle is the same.

Lord Chaitanya Visits Vrindavan
→ Dandavats

Hare KrishnaBy Lokanath Swami

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was always absorbed in thoughts of Sri Vrindavan, often enquiring in a deep devotional mood, "Where is Vrindavan?" On several occasions, His devotees, fearing separation from Him, diverted, discouraged, or dissuaded Him from visiting Vrindavan. The Lord's first attempt to go to Vrindavan occurred shortly after He accepted sannyasa, the renounced order, at age twenty-four. Nityananda Prabhu, His chief associate, tricked Him into thinking that the Ganga, which flows through Navadvip, West Bengal, where the Lord lived, was Vrindavan's river Yamuna. Mahaprabhu was so intensely absorbed in thoughts of Vrindavan that He jumped into the Ganga. Continue reading "Lord Chaitanya Visits Vrindavan

Surprises at Sizes

Hosting our team is Dhir Krishna.  He's originally from North India and is now residing in Reading, Pennsylvania.  He and his family opened their house to us for a good night’s sleep, prasadam meals, and a program the previous night of chants and discussions from the Bhagavad Gita.  We spoke from chapter 10, text 11, about the power behind instinctiveness.
Well received!
There’s a general power behind the instinct, intuition, creativity, inspiration, and so on.  The Gita addresses this and gives credit to the paramatma
Please explore.
Now for the walking.  Our team was surprised at the size of Allentown and it's twin town, Bethlehem.  There’s people in these places.  One young Afro-American chap was curious when he cast eyes on my robes.
“A religion or something?” he asked.
“A spiritual tradition with roots from India.  I’m walking a 900 mile plus trek to represent the tradition, one that promotes peace and simplicity.”
Another Afro-American dude pulled over from driving.  “Hey, I saw your aura and I had to stop and ask…”  He described himself as a director of films.  He wanted to take a picture.  When he came out of the car, his size and height were revealed.  He could have easily passed for a champ basketball player.
At Overlook Park, Chaz, from News 69 TV, came over for an interview.  This guy was a pro at what he was doing.  He could practically do acrobatics with his camera.  It was inspiring to see this.  I was pretty stiff at the time.  The interview was broadcast on TV on the 6 PM news.  Let’s see how motorists react to the broadcast tomorrow about a Hare Krishna monk who is doing some walking to the extreme.

Lucky?

Recently I’ve been lucky if you can consider luck as a principle of reality.  Or, let’s say I was a recipient of kindness in the form of new pairs of shoes.  A box was sent from Florida by Ananta Sesa, a financialist.  The contents of the box were a pair of Keen shoes which are sturdy and airy.  We also managed to pick up a package that came from Pittsburgh.  Our dear friends Nitya Dita and Siksastaka delivered a pair of Oofos shoes which are light, soft, and bouncy.  Along with my current sandals (complements from an admirer in Spain), I can now interchange between varieties of footwear and make the ends of my two lower limbs happy.

While trekking Old Route 22, right next to Interstate 81, I received a good response from the motorists.  A man named Lance pulled over on the road right next to a pond where a pair of celestial-like swans were gliding.

He said, “My fiancée saw you passing by our home so I’m here to find out about you”.

We chatted.

I received a ride offer from Rob who was coming back from his work.  Of course, I declined.

Another young guy who was working on the road side and kicking fallen leaves from the sycamore tree was picking up traffic cones when he saw me.  I then introduced myself as a person sometimes referred to as a ‘moving traffic cone’.  He then remarked, “Ah, the colour! The colour you are wearing…”.  We laughed and chatted.

And near the Old 22 was a highway where a road construction crew was busy at work.  Some of those workers started moving traffic cones and gave hand waves and nods of approval for me to pass.  Wait a minute, did I say construction crew? Let me rephrase, it was more like a group of cheerleaders.

Andrew from TV 69 came to interview me as I was ambling alone on the last mile.  It was a day when you couldn’t feel neglected.

The teachings of bhakti or Krishna consciousness give us greater insight into the personality of that all powerful Lord. One aspect we explore this Sunday is that Krishna is unconquerable yet he agrees to be conquered by the love of his devotee.
