Mother Balai—A Very Dynamic Devotee, by Nama Cintamani Dasi
Giriraj Swami

I met Mother Balai through my sister Padyavali, who lived in Kinross in the Eastern Transvaal. Whenever I visited Kinross I would do as much sankirtana as possible, and soon, through the effort of the devotees, a nama-hatta was established.

Padyavali regularly brought prasadam for Mother Balai and her family, and soon Balai; her good husband, Lenny; and her children, Shamenderan and Priyenderan, took up the process of Krishna consciousness.

Mother Balai and the devotees, including two devotees from nearby towns, Their Graces Raghunath Prabhu and Uddhava Prabhu, started a regular Food for Life (FFL) program.

Mother Balai was an excellent cook, and she and her team used to prepare nutritious meals and distribute them enthusiastically while a group of devotees performed kirtan.

Mother Balai met His Holiness Giriraj Swami Maharaja at the Hillbrow temple and later accepted him as her spiritual master. He described her as a very dynamic devotee. She became very attached to Maharaja, and he became her life and soul. Once, she was alone in Kinross and was very frightened. She took shelter of chanting the holy names, but she was still frightened. She then was inspired from within by Guru Maharaja and started chanting Guru Maharaja’s pranama-mantra and focusing on his picture. She soon overcame her fear, and after that she always took greater shelter of Guru Maharaja and the holy names, and her faith increased more and more.

She loved Srila Prabhupada and wanted to do more and more service. Their Holinesses Krishna Das Swami, Partha Sarathi Das Goswami, and Giriraj Maharaja stayed at her home when they came for big preaching programs in Kinross. She served them and all the sankirtana devotees with heart and soul.

She was very kindhearted. She had a helper who had a five-year-old son who had AIDS. Mother Balai taught him to chant, and he became very attached to her and the devotees. He enthusiastically took part in all the spiritual activities and received special mercy from the maharajas. Mother Balai took care of him until he left his body at a young age.

When she came, with her devotee friend Shakila, on a pilgrimage to India with His Holiness Bhakti Caitanya Swami, she was so blissful visiting the holy places. She and her friend went out collecting Vraja raja (dust) in the early hours of the morning they were leaving for South Africa.

Until recently, Mother Balai served in the restaurant in Gauteng. She always was very eager to serve in any way she could.

I thank Mother Balai for taking such loving care of us during our sankirtana activities in Kinross. I will miss her sweet, loving association.

Mother Balai, please forgive me for any offenses. I am praying for your auspicious onward spiritual journey and offer my sincere, deep, heartfelt condolences to your family.

Your grateful godsister and friend,
Nama Cintamani dasi

Pandava Nirjala Ekadasi – Launch of the Pankajanghri Das Seva Campaign
- TOVP.org

The most auspicious and powerful Pandava Nirjala ekadasi is approaching on June 20 (US)/June 21 (India and parts of US). Observing a full fast, including water, on this one ekadasi is equal to observing all others. And additionally, giving charity on this ekadasi leads to “imperishable” results.

Srila Vyasadeva said to Bhima, “Oh Bhima, Lord Sri Krishna has said that whoever observes this Ekadasi should take a holy bath, give charity to a worthy person, chant the Lord’s Holy names on a japa-mala, and perform some kind of recommended sacrifice, for by doing these things on this day one receives imperishable benefits. There is no need to perform any other kind of religious duty. Observance of this Ekadasi fast alone promotes one to the supreme abode of Sri Vishnu. Oh best of the Kurus, if one donates gold, cloth, or anything else on this day, the merit one obtains is imperishable.”

On this day the TOVP management will be launching a special ongoing campaign dedicated to the memory and service of His Grace Sriman Pankajanghri prabhu to fulfill his deepest desire to serve Lord Nrsimhadeva by completing His new home in the TOVP. For one who gave so much to so many devotees worldwide through his selfless rendering of prayers to Lord Nrsimha on their behalf, this is an opportunity to give him something back.

There are two seva options available: sponsor a Nrsimha Brick or give a General Donation towards the completion of Lord Nrsimha’s Wing and altar. Nrsimha Brick donors will have their names inscribed on the brick which will also be laid under the altar.

Make your seva pledge on Pandava Nirjala ekadasi for Pankajanghri prabhu by going to the TOVP website page below: Pankajanghri Das Seva.

The Story of Pandava Nirjala Ekadasi.

Once Bhimasena, the younger brother of Maharaja Yudhisthira, asked the great sage Srila Vyasadeva, the grandfather of the Pandavas, if it is possible to return to the spiritual world without having observed all the rules and regulations of the Ekadasi fasts.

Bhimasena spoke as follows, “Oh greatly intelligent and learned grandfather, my brother Yudhisthira, my dear mother Kunti, and my beloved wife Draupadi, as well as Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva, fast completely on each Ekadasi and strictly follow all the rules, guidelines and regulative injunctions of that sacred day.
Being very religious, they always tell me that I should also fast on that day too.
But, Oh learned grandfather, I tell them that I cannot live without eating, because as the son of Vayudeva, samanaprana (the digestive air) hunger is unbearable to me. I can give widely in charity and worship Lord Keshava properly with all manner of wonderful upacharas (items), but I cannot be asked to fast on Ekadasi.
Please tell me how I can obtain the same merits without fasting.”

Hearing these words, the grandsire of Bhima, Srila Vyasadeva said, “If you want to go to the heavenly planets and avoid the hellish planets, you should indeed observe a fast on both the light and dark Ekadasis.”

Bhima replied, “Oh great saintly, intelligent grandfather, please listen to my plea.
Oh greatest of munis, since I cannot live if I eat only once in a day, how can I possibly live if I fast completely? Within my stomach burns a special fire named Vrika, the fire of digestion. Agni, the fire-god, descends from Lord Vishnu through Brahma, from Brahma to Angirasa, from Angirasa to Brihaspathi, and from Brihaspathi to Samyu, who was Agni’s father. He is the gatekeeper in charge of Nairritti, the south-eastern direction. He is one of the eight material elements, and Parikshit Maharaja, he is very expert at examining things. He examined Maharaja Shibi once by turning into a dove. (for further information on this incident see Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada’s Srimad Bhagavatam commentary to 1:12:20. Purport.)

Agni is divided into three categories; Davagni, the fire in wood, Jatharagni, the fire in the digestion in the stomach, and Vadavagni, the fire that creates fog when hot and cold streams mix in for example the ocean. Another name for the fire of digestion is Vrika. It is this powerful fire that resides in my stomach. Only when I eat to my full satisfaction does the fire in my stomach become satisfied.

Oh great sage, I might possibly be able to fast only once, so I beg that you tell me of an Ekadasi that is worthy of my fasting and that includes all other Ekadasis.
I shall faithfully observe that fast and hopefully still become eligible for liberation’s release.”

Srila Vyasadeva replied, “Oh king, you have heard from me about the various kinds of occupational duties, such as elaborate Vedic ceremonies and pujas.
In the Kali-yuga, however, no one will be able to observe all these occupational & functional duties properly. I shall therefore tell you how, at practically no expense, one can endure some small austerity and achieve the greatest benefit and resultant happiness. The essence of what is written in the Vedic literatures known as the Puranas is that one should not eat on either the dark or light fortnight Ekadasis. One who fasts on Ekadasi is saved from going to the hellish planets.”

As stated in Srimad Bhagavatam (Mahabhagavat Puranam) 12:13:12 and 15, the Bhagavat Puranam is itself the essence or cream of all Vedanta philosophy (sara-vedanta-saram), and the Srimad Bhagavatam’s unequivocal message is that of full surrender to Lord Sri Krishna and the rendering of loving devotional service to Him. Observing Ekadasi strictly is a great aid in that process, and here Srila Vyasadeva is simply stressing to Bhima the importance of the Ekadasi vratam.

Hearing Srila Vyasadeva’s words, the son of Vayu, Bhimasena, the strongest of all warriors, became frightened and began to shake like a leaf on a banyan tree in a strong wind. The frightened Bhimasena then said, “Oh grandfather, what should I do? I am completely unable and ill equipped to fast twice in a month throughout the year! Please tell me of the one fasting day that will bestow the greatest benefit upon me!”

Vyasadeva replied, “Without drinking even water, you should fast on the Ekadasi that occurs during the light fortnight of the month of Jyeshtha (May-June) when the sun travels in the sign of Taurus (Vrishabh) and Gemini (Mithun).

According to learned personalities, on this day one may bathe and perform Achamana for pratiprokshana purification. But while performing Achamana one may drink only that amount of water equal to a drop of gold, or that amount it takes to immerse a single mustard seed. Only this amount of water should be placed in the right palm for sipping, which one should form to resemble a cow’s ear. If one drinks more water than this, he might as well have drunk wine despite the soaring heat of summer (in the northern hemisphere and cold in the southern hemisphere).

One must certainly not eat anything, for if he does so he breaks his fast.
This rigid fast is in effect from sunrise on the Ekadasi day to sunrise on the Dwadashi day. If a person endeavors to observe this great fast very strictly, he easily achieves the result of observing all twenty-four other Ekadasi fasts throughout the entire year.

On Dwadashi the devotee should bathe early in the morning. Then, according to the prescribed rules, guidelines and regulative injunctions, and of course depending on his ability, he should give some gold and water to worthy brahmanas. Finally, he should cheerfully honor prasadam with a branmana.

Oh Bhimasena, one who can fast on this special Ekadasi in this manner reaps the benefit of having fasted on every Ekadasi during the year. There is no doubt of this, nor should there be.

Oh Bhima, now hear the specific merit one gets by fasting on this Ekadasi. The Supreme Lord Keshava, who holds a conch, discus, club and lotus, personally told me, `Everyone should take shelter of Me and follow My instructions.’ Then He told me that one who fasts on this Ekadasi, without taking even drinking water or eating, becomes free of all sinful reactions, and that one who observes the difficult nirjala fast on Jyeshtha-shukla Ekadasi truly reaps the benefit of all other Ekadasi fasts.’

“Oh Bhimasena, in the Kali-yuga, the age of quarrel and hypocrisy, when all the principles of the Vedas will have been destroyed or greatly minimized, and when there will be no proper charity or observance of the ancient Vedic principles and ceremonies, how will there be any means of purifying the self? But there is the opportunity to fast on Ekadasi and become free of all one’s past sins.

Oh son of Vayu, what more can I say to you? You should not eat during the Ekadasis that occur during the dark and light fortnights, and you should even give up drinking water (nir = no jala= water) on the particularly auspicious Ekadasi day of Jyeshtha-shukla Ekadasi.

Oh Vrikodara (voracious eater), whoever fasts on this Ekadasi receives the merits of bathing in all the places of pilgrimage, giving all kinds of charities to worthy persons, and fasting on all the dark and light Ekadasis throughout the year, in one go. Of this there is no doubt.

Oh tiger among men, whoever fasts on this Ekadasi truly becomes a great person and achieves all manner of opulence and wealth, grains, strength, and health.

And at the fearful moment of death, the terrible Yamadutas, whose complexions are yellow and black and who brandish huge maces and twirl mystic pasha ropes in the air for binding their victims, will refuse to approach him. Rather, such a faithful soul will at once be taken to the supreme abode of Lord Vishnu by the Vishnu-dutas, whose transcendentally beautiful forms are clothed in gorgeous yellowish garments and who each hold a disk, club, conch and lotus in their four hands, resembling Lord Vishnu. It is to gain all these benefits that one should certainly fast on this very auspicious and important Ekadasi, even from water.”

When the other Pandavas heard about the benefits to be gained by following Jyeshtha-shukla Ekadasi, they resolved to observe it exactly as their grandfather Srila Vyasadeva had explained it to their brother, Bhimasena. All the Pandavas observed it by refraining from eating or drinking anything, and thus this day is also known as Pandava Nirjala Dvadashi (technically it is a Maha-Dvadashi).

Srila Vyasadeva continued, “Oh Bhimasena, therefore you should observe this important fast to remove all your past sinful reactions. You should pray to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna in this way making your sankalpa declaration, `Oh Lord of all the devas (demigods), Oh Supreme Personality of Godhead, today I shall observe Ekadasi without taking any water.

Oh unlimited Anantadeva, I shall break fast on the next day, Dwadashi.’

“Thereafter, to remove all his sins, the devotee should honor this Ekadasi fast with full faith in the Lord and with full control over his senses. Whether his sins are equal in volume to Mount Sumeru or to Mandarachala Hill, if he or she observes this Ekadasi, the sins that have been accumulated all become nullified and are burned to ashes. Such is the great power of this Ekadasi.

Oh best of human beings, although a person should also give water and cows in charity during this Ekadasi, if for some reason or other he cannot, then he should give a qualified brahmana some cloth or a pot filled with water. Indeed, the merit achieved by giving water alone equals that gained by giving gold ten million times a day.

Oh Bhima, Lord Sri Krishna has said that whoever observes this Ekadasi should take a holy bath, give charity to a worthy person, chant the Lord’s Holy names on a japa-mala, and perform some kind of recommended sacrifice, for by doing these things on this day one receives imperishable benefits. There is no need to perform any other kind of religious duty. Observance of this Ekadasi fast alone promotes one to the supreme abode of Sri Vishnu. Oh best of the Kurus, if one donates gold, cloth, or anything else on this day, the merit one obtains is imperishable.

Remember, whosoever eats any grains on Ekadasi becomes contaminated by sin and verily eats only sin. In effect, he has already become a dog-eater, and after death he suffers a hellish existence. But he who observes this sacred Jyeshtha-shukla Ekadasi and gives something in charity certainly achieves liberation from the cycle of repeated birth and death and attains to the supreme abode.
Observing this Ekadasi, which is merged with Dwadashi, frees one from the horrible sin of killing a brahmana, drinking liquor and wine, becoming envious of one’s spiritual master and ignoring his instructions, and continually telling lies.

Furthermore, Oh best of beings (Jivottama), any man or woman who observes this fast properly and worships the Supreme Lord Jalshayi (He who sleeps on the water), and who on the next day satisfies a qualified brahmana with nice sweets and a donation of cows and money – such a person certainly pleases the Supreme Lord Vasudeva, so much so that one hundred previous generations in his family undoubtedly go to the Supreme Lord’s abode, even though they may have been very sinful, of bad character, and guilty of suicide, etc. Indeed, one who observes this amazing Ekadasi rides on a glorious celestial airplane (vimana) to the Lord’s abode.

One who on this day gives a brahmana a waterpot, an umbrella, or shoes surely goes to the heavenly planets. Indeed, he who simply hears these glories also attains to the transcendental abode of the Supreme Lord, Shri Vishnu. Whoever performs the Shraddha ceremony to the forefathers on the dark-moon day called amavasya, particularly if it occurs at the time of a solar eclipse undoubtedly achieves great merit. But this same merit is achieved by him who simply hears this sacred narration – so powerful and so dear to the Lord is this Ekadasi.

One should clean his teeth properly and, without eating or drinking, observe this Ekadasi to please the Supreme Lord, Keshava. On the day after Ekadasi one should worship the Supreme Personality of Godhead in His form as Trivikrama by offering Him water, flowers, incense, and a brightly burning lamp. Then the devotee should pray from the heart, `Oh God of gods, Oh deliverer of everyone, Oh Hrishikesha, master of the senses, kindly bestow upon me the gift of liberation, though I can offer you nothing greater than this humble pot filled with water.’ “Then the devotee should donate the waterpot to a brahmana. Oh Bhimasena, after this Ekadasi fast and donating the recommended items according to his ability, the devotee should feed brahmanas and thereafter honor prasadam silently.”

Srila Vyasadeva concluded, “I strongly urge you to fast on this auspicious, purifying, sin-devouring Dwadashi in just the way I have outlined.

Thus you will be completely freed of all sins and reach the supreme abode.”

Thus ends the narration of the glories of Jyeshtha-shukla Ekadasi, or Bhimaseni-nirjala Ekadasi, from the Brahma-vaivarta Purana.

Mother Balai’s Legacy of Love and Service, by Madri Dasi
Giriraj Swami

When I heard of the passing away of Mother Balai due to COVID-19, so many joyful devotional memories of us together flooded my mind and heart. She was given the name Narasimha at birth and was fun loving from the start. Her recounting of her growing up was filled with stories of fearlessly swimming in rivers, laughter, and trying to increase the happiness of everyone she met.

She married kindhearted Lenny and had two lovely children, Shamen and Priyen. They lived in a beautiful home in Kinross, South Africa, where Lenny worked in the asbestos mines and Mother Balai was a librarian. Kinross is a small town, and Mother Balai, due her friendly disposition, knew practically the whole town. She was known and loved by everyone she met.

In 1990 her younger son, Priyen, met devotees and received Srila Prabhupada’s books. At that time Nama Cintamani and Lajja Sila Prabhus would get The Science of Self-Realization sponsored and distributed in schools. So, Priyen was convinced by Srila Prabhupada’s teachings and went home from school to tell his parents that he wanted to make dietary changes and be a Hare Krishna devotee. Nama Cintamani’s sister Padyavali lived a few streets away from Mother Balai, and so Mother Balai met the devotees and immediately took to Krishna consciousness, along with Lenny.

Immediately their home became transformed, and they hosted devotees and sannyasis who stayed over while preaching in the area. At the same time, Your Divine Grace invited His Holiness Krishna das Swami to South Africa, and, when informing us at the Muldersdrift temple of his imminent visit, he mentioned that he liked big hall programs. So Nama Cintamani, Lajja Sila, Bhakti-devi, Kuntidevi, and I arranged hall programs in seventeen towns, including Kinross. Mother Balai hosted both His Holiness Krishna das Swami and Your Divine Grace in her home and also cooked for the hall program. Later, Visakha Priya often visited and stayed over for preaching.

Her name was Bala, and she was a person of great strength. I recall how you asked her husband if he thought she was ready for initiation and he said, “Yes, but she does have a temper sometimes!” You laughed, she laughed, and we all laughed. And she promised to work on it. She once told you how she was addicted to drinking decaffeinated coffee, and you told her that not all the caffeine is removed in the process. She remembered this and often spoke of it.

Every time we preached in that area on traveling sankirtana, Mother Balai would let us stay over. Her motherly love was all encompassing in the huge feasts she would prepare for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and serve on huge plates that looked more like trays. She heard about the power of the dust of the feet of Vaishnavas and of the benefits of taking their remnants, so she and Padyavali devised a secret plan. One would ask you questions while the other either served you more prasada or stole remnants off your plate.

Kinross gets very cold, and Mother Balai would arrange all comforts for us when we stayed over. When we returned to her home late at night from preaching, the electric blankets would be on, hot, fresh elaborate prasada would await us, and unlimited questions about the philosophy would pour out from Mother Balai until the late hours of the night. She had an intense thirst for knowledge and was fired up to preach it to others immediately as she learned it. She was so enthused about her Krishna consciousness that she wanted to inundate the whole place with it. She cooked in huge pots in her home and arranged teams of devotees that she cultivated to assist in distributing. Her love and generosity overflowed in each plate, regardless of the recipient. This became a steady service she performed. At the same time, she would cultivate new families, and each time we visited she had a list of new people for us to cultivate. What a front liner in the sankirtana mission she was! She loved Your Divine Grace dearly and served as if you were always in her presence, constantly speaking of your service and interactions with various people.

When her dear husband became ill from asbestos pollution in his lungs and was hospitalised in Durban, Mother Balai was determined that he get maha water and caranamrta from Sri Sri Radha-Radhanath—and the holy name. She chanted sixty-four rounds daily for his benefit and held daily vigil at his bedside at the hospital until he departed.

When her helper back at home in Kinross gave birth to a child who was HIV positive, Mother Balai sort of adopted him, giving him a spiritual name and showering him with love and comforts as if he were her very own. She would buy him toys and clothes and chant and teach him to chant and feed him prasada daily. When he passed on, she cooked a huge amount of prasada and distributed it at his funeral and implored devotees to bless his soul.

Her spirit of jiva-daya continued, and she preached to and engaged everyone she met in devotional service, inspiring them to buy ingredients and sundry items for the temple. She would then drive her Mercedes Benz to the temple, loaded with all these offerings, even though she was advancing in age and the drive was over three hours. When we opened the Midrand temple, she was very enthused and when Nrsimhananda Prabhu, my husband, invited her to join our service team as a full-time devotee, she unhesitatingly joined full-time, even though she was already in her seventies. We loved her dearly, as she loved us, and gave her a very comfortable ensuite room. All she had to do was serve, as she loved to do. She attended the full morning program daily, dancing during the mangala-arati kirtans and chanting her japa in the temple room. She was an insulin-dependent diabetic and would sometime momentarily dose off during her japa; she would repent about this to me daily. I would try to encourage her, telling her that Krishna saw her endeavors.

Her determination was most admirable. She would chant thirty-two rounds daily, saying that the extra sixteen were for your good health and long life, to make this world auspicious. Her service in Midrand was to cook for the devotees, and when we went on hari-nama sankirtana just before guru-puja every morning, we would return to her hot tea before we all had class. She loved the cows and fed them daily with treats and encouraged her family and friends from Kinross to do the same. Once a month she would drive to Kinross to check up on her home and then return with the trunk of the car full of treats that she would cook for the devotees in the time she was meant to rest. Kachoris, cakes, tarts, and so much more would flow out of her car. When I ran the restaurant there, she would make cookies and pickles and many nice things to sell. She served with the enthusiasm and energy of a very young person, despite being over seventy. And she was a meticulous dresser, which added to her vibrance. On festival days she would cook more than sixty-five preps herself, and after cooking she would go to the temple room to chant more japa, even though she was physically exhausted.

Before her Midrand seva began, she would drive three hours from Kinross to Lenasia and cook the raja-bhoga with Mother Brahmini and serve the devotees and clean the kitchen and then drive back to Kinross. In her SUV she looked like a girl on a mission! And every time she came to do this service, she had new dishcloths and ghee and other things that she would engage so many people in donating for service to our beloved Sri Sri Nitai-Gaurahari. Recently, just before Nrsimha-caturdasi, she drove with her friend Shakila, who sewed the day outfit for the Deities and was delivering it to the Lenasia temple along with bhoga and thirteen buckets of pure ghee.

Mother Balai had a great sense of humor, which endeared her to all she met. On one trip to India, while we were on parikrama with busloads of devotees at Govinda-kunda, she was trying to write down something that was being spoken, and a Vraja-vasi child stole her pen right out of her hand. She laughed heartily, saying that Krishna was making her detached. Then at Kusum Sarovara she bravely went into the kunda, so happy to have the holy water embrace her, she said—and her false teeth fell out due to her laughing while taking the dip. A kind devotee dove in and retrieved them, and she happily put them on. We teased her that now her smile had become more auspicious. And when we were back on the bus, the sannyasi asked her how she was finding the trip, and she loudly told him of these experiences with such innocence and laughter that he too became red-faced, shaking with laughter.

We will always pray for Mother Balai’s mercy and love upon us. Her loss is painful, but with her attitude of service, we can only conclude that she must have transitioned into a higher realm of blissful service by Your Divine Grace’s mercy and her own love for you, and Srila Prabhupada and the parampara’s mercy.

Thank you for inspiring and cultivating and sheltering us all. We love you.

Your insignificant servants,

Nrsimhananda das and Madri dasi

Spiritual journey begins only after a big reversal
→ Dandavats

By Rishika Gitta

Life is no less than a roller coaster ride: we cannot expect what we’ll have to face next. Life may pull us down into its deep and dark gorges, or it may make us soar high in the open blue sky. Naturally, all that most people are concerned about is how to lead a more comfortable life tomorrow, and thus schemes are hatched for this end which may not always be honest, sensible or thoughtful. The efforts for obtaining material comforts become moral and spiritual pitfalls and one is pulled down instead of being able to rise. TOVP Main Dome Sankirtana Figures
- TOVP.org

The first 3-meter (10′) figure for the dancing Sankirtana group, which will be placed at the base of the TOVP Main Dome, was recently cast from fiberglass and yesterday fixed at a height of 52 meters (170′) above the main Altar. This was done for clearer visualization and final approval of the sizes of the figures and the thickness of the bas-relief.

Everyone was satisfied with the test results, and the work on making the rest of the figures continues. In total, it is planned to place about 120 3-meter-tall figures along the perimeter of the main dome, including Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and the rest of the Panchatattva members.
