Meeting with HH Gopal Krishna Maharaj – Learning to sense the contemporary pulse
→ The Spiritual Scientist

While I was in Delhi, I had the fortune of meeting HH Gopal Krishna Maharaj. Though he had returned from a tour of the West just the previous day and was exhausted, he kindly agreed to meet me at his quarters at the Radha Partha Sarthi temple.

I gave him a copy of my latest book Demystifying Reincarnation. After glancing through it and appreciating its detailed table of contents, Maharaj mentioned an earlier book of mine:10 Leadership Sutras from Bhagavad-gita. About a year ago, he had called me, saying that he was scheduled to give a talk in China on spiritual principles for corporate leaders. He had got my Leadership Sutras book and wanted to know whether I had any additional teaching aids with it. Honored and humbled by his request, I had sent him my Powerpoint presentations on the book.

During our meeting, Maharaj told me that he had gone through my book and had found it good. He added that it was a bit too analytical – for a busy businessman, it didn’t give any immediate carry-home points. I admitted that limitation, adding that it was not easy to convey the Bhagavad-gita’s philosophy in bullet points that would be intelligible and appealing to new people.

Accepting the point, Maharaj suggested that we needed a book explaining how the Gita can help people deal with practical problems such as stress, depression, addiction, job loss and relationship breakup. He said that such a book, which could be titled something like “The Bhagavad-gita applied for daily living” would become a hit. I found Maharaj’s suggestion so superb that I started wondering why till now no one in our movement, and why I myself, hadn’t thought of a book like this.

I have often found inspiring Maharaj’s keen awareness of the contemporary pulse and the opportunities it presents for spiritual outreach. About a decade ago, when the recession had bedeviled the global economy, Maharaj had suggested that I write a book about how the economic meltdown was ultimately caused by greed. Accordingly, I had written the pocket book “Recession – Adversity or Opportunity?” delineating a three-point solution: Simplify, Clarify and Purify. Maharaj had liked that book, written the foreword for it and had even gifted it to the Prime Minister and the President of India. He had also gifted it to the President of Mauritius, who too had appreciated it and had even written a review for it. That book had become by far my best-selling book till date, and I felt that the book on Gita applied, again suggested by Maharaj, would do equally well. I thanked him for the brilliant idea and promised to work on it as soon as possible.

When I mentioned to Maharaj that I had been writing about the practical application of the Gita at gitadaily.com daily for nearly six years now, he was intrigued. He glanced through the Gita-daily app on my phone, appreciated the articles, especially their titles, and asked me to subscribe him by email.

As we discussed about online outreach, I asked Maharaj about how he dealt with criticism, especially misleading misrepresentations on the net, which inevitably befall anyone who becomes well-known. The clarity and conviction of Maharaj’s answer stunned me – he said, “If someone wants to go to the Internet to learn, why do they need to come to me?” While we may occasionally counter negative material, ultimately, we can’t stop it. People have their free will and those who wants reasons to stay away from Krishna will find reasons, with the Internet serving them as an aide. However, the Internet doesn’t control our preaching – Krishna does. If we try to serve him sincerely, he will guide us how best to serve him, and how best to respond to criticism.

When I sought Maharaj’s blessing for my tour of US from August end, he enquired about my programs and offered his blessings, stressing that a lot of work needs to be done in the country where ISKCON was founded.

When we were discussing the comparative preaching scenarios in the West and India, I appreciated the phenomenal preaching in Delhi – with over a dozen temples either opened or soon to be opened, with hundred or more brahmacharis in the two leading temples, with hundreds of devotees coming to each temple, with thousands coming to the bigger temples, including, of course, the marquee Radha Partha Sarthi temple. I said that, under Maharaj’s expert stewardship, the capital of India was fast becoming the capital of ISKCON’s preaching in India.

At the end of our eighty-minute meeting, I felt enormously encouraged and enlivened by the association of one of the foremost commanders of Srila Prabhupada’s army.

With the Highway People

As usual, stars greet me in the morning, some of which make that dive.  Owls hoot.  Bats fly past.  The air is warm, then cool.  A diversity of currents come at you.  Then the sun rises and everything changes.  The night life for the animals comes to an end and everything is relatively quiet, except for man.

The traffic of vacationers begins.  For me some attention comes.  People wave, honk or stop.  Over pulls a young woman from Oklahoma.  She walks with me a bit.  A vehicle from New York with two couples comes to a halt.  “Can we help?”

“Just walking—across the U.S.”

A local rancher, with some young men, asked Marshall, who’s coming my way,  if all is okay.

“So you’re just going for a walk?” https://youtu.be/7qaYi6KuHhc

“I’m supporting the monk,” says Marshall.

“Monk!?” mentioned the fellow, as if there’s a Martian in town.

We came upon the Pony Express station and the remains of a Long Range Station.  The Shoshone tribe camped in these areas in winter.  You get this rich history here.  The train and the Lincoln Highway changed modes of travel forever.  Devon—whom we met up with again—and I, are cross-nation walkers who defy, in a way, these alternative modes of travel, merely by our constant stepping on the soil.

In Austen, the Nevada branch of the Lincoln Highway association met at Leland House and we were invited.  After all Hwy 50 and the historic Lincoln Hwy merge here.  Bob, the mayor, played sax.  We were in good hands.  Nice people.  My purpose is to do just that—to meet and mingle and let them know that Krishna is cool.

May the Source be with you!

Life is Precarious

Curtis had left us two days ago, back to Canada.  He expressed before leaving that he learned much from his stay with us.  We will miss him and wish him a safe journey as he hitch-hikes to British Columbia.

As one person goes, another seems to enter the door.  Mark, from Austin, is a thirty-four year old who’s gone through a lot, including alcoholism.  He joined us for my last six miles of the day.  In our discussion with him, we concluded that life’s traumas can be responded to by one of two ways—the way of darkness and self-deception, or the way of spirituality.  One leads to a tunnel of compounding difficulties; the other to freedom.

Mark, Marshall, Hayagriva and I very much relished the last two hours, however, our return ride back to our satellite, Lincoln Motel, meant death for several entities.  Rabbits in particular were creamed under our tires.  It seems that life is very vibrant at nightfall.  A young fox became confused by our headlights while he was hunting.  He wouldn’t leave the road and scurried about here and there on the asphalt.  Finally, he left our radar and fled.  An owl also swooped down in front of our vehicle, “The Jaladhuta Express.”  Minutes later a young bobcat ran in front of us, escaping death from our wheels.

Whether human or animal, life totters from safety to threats.  To Mark, I suggested he work on a freedom program.  “Be determined to be clean.”

May the Source be with you!

Vyasa-puja Celebration via Skype, August 26, Durban
Giriraj Swami

GRS_VP_2017_DurbanGiriraj Swami read and spoke from Srimad Bhagavatam 3.15.25.

“We have read about different symptoms — pulakasu— symptoms of happiness like tears in the eyes that come from offenceless chanting. If we don’t experience such symptoms it is to be understood that we are committing offenses while chanting. What to do? Srila Prabhupada continues here at the end of the purport:

Caitanya-caritamrta suggests a nice remedy in this connection. There it is said in verse 31, Chapter Eight, of Adi-lila, that if anyone takes shelter of Lord Caitanya and just chants the holy name of the Lord, Hare Krsna, he becomes freed from all offenses.’

Caitanya-caritamrta Adi-lila 8.31
‘But if one only chants, with some slight faith, the holy names of Lord Caitanya and Nityananda, very quickly he is cleansed of all offenses. Thus as soon as he chants the Hare Krsna maha-mantra, he feels the ecstasy of love for God.

Purport:
Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura remarks in this connection that if one takes shelter of Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Nityananda, follows Their instructions to become more tolerant than the tree and humbler than the grass, and in this way chants the holy name of the Lord, very soon he achieves the platform of transcendental loving service to the Lord, and tears appear in his eyes. There are offenses to be considered in chanting the Hare Krsnmaha-mantra, but there are no such considerations in chanting the names of Gaura-Nityananda. Therefore, if one chants the Hare Krsnmaha-mantra but his life is still full of sinful activities, it will be very difficult for him to achieve the platform of loving service to the Lord. But if in spite of being an offender one chants the holy names of Gaura-Nityananda, he is very quickly freed from the reactions to his offenses. Therefore, one should first approach Lord Caitanya and Nityananda, or worship Guru-Gauranga, and then come to the stage of worshiping Radha-Krsna.'”

Radhastami is coming
→ KKSBlog

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, 23 September 2012, Durban, South Africa, Radhastami Lecture)

If we want some deeper understanding of the aim of life, it is possible by the mercy of Srimati Radharani, who is most compassionate. She is more compassionate than Krsna. We can easily attract that mercy by doing some service. This is the key! We should think about her service. She did everything for Krsna’s pleasure. What are we going to do today for Krsna’s pleasure? Radhastami is a day of soul searching, a day for us to realise, ‘I have to rise up. It’s time that I make a real sacrifice for Krsna’s pleasure.’ This is the inner meaning of Radhastami.

Srila Prabhupada: “My heart is always burning in the fire of material existence, and I have made no provisions for getting out of it. The only remedy is hari-nama-sankirtana, the chanting of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra, which is imported from the spiritual world, Goloka-Vrndavana. How unfortunate I am that I have no attraction for this. (Srimad-Bhagavatam, 5.1.22 Purport)

Balaram appearance day at the lotus feet of Lord Balarama
→ The Spiritual Scientist

Around the period of Balarama Jayanti, 2017, I went on a North India tour which was as much as a pilgrimage as it was an outreach tour.

Over the last few years, I have travelled more in America than in India. I wanted to correct this imbalance and, more importantly, to visit Vrindavan and seek the blessings of the dhama before embarking on my fourth tour of the US, which incidentally is the first youth-outreach focused tour.

Additionally, Rukmini Krishna Prabhu, the Temple President of Punjabi Bagh temple, had invited me there long ago. When he came to know I was coming, he competently coordinated with the various temples in Delhi for a weekend full of programs.

In a span of about forty hours, I spoke an evening class at the Dwarka temple (Appreciating Balarama’s two blessings – Bala and Rama), a youth meeting at the Punjabi Bagh temple (Understanding the mind through four animal metaphors 1 – Horse & Wolf – Hindi), the Sunday feast class at the East of Kailash temple (Increasing our willpower through restriction, redirection and reconstruction – Hindi), the Sunday feast class at the Gurgaon temple (Understanding the mind through four animal metaphors 2 – Dog & Sheep – Hindi) and the Balarama Appearance day class at the Punjabi Bagh temple (Appreciating Balarama’s position, pastime and blessing – Hindi).

In Delhi, the highlight for me was the opportunity to speak about Balaramji on his appearance day at a temple where his Deity is present – very few ISKCON temples have Balaram deities. I spoke on how Balarama serves as a link between Krishna and the Vrajavasis, acting as the Lord’s messenger to those feeling separation from him. Similarly, Balarama’s representatives, our spiritual masters, link us with Krishna, helping us make sense and find solace when life goes wrong. I also felt blessed to have the opportunity to do the Abhishek of Krishna-Balarama deities on the occasion of Balarama appearance day.

My overall Delhi-Vrindavan trip was coordinated by Radha-Damodara Prabhu who works at Sopra Steria and organized a program for his colleagues (Tap the power of thoughts, don’t be trapped by them – Hindi). He drove me to and fro from Vrindavan, and we had several good discussions on living with the distance between our principles and our practices, while also working to bridge that distance.

Over the years, I have been somewhat hesitant in speaking to Hindi audiences because I was told that my classes are too intellectual for them, and I struggle to find precise Hindi words for expressing myself. All my reading, writing and thinking of philosophy has been in English. So, whenever I speak in Hindi, I have to act as both a translator and a speaker.

Interestingly however, the feedback of devotees after my Hindi classes in Delhi revealed to me how seeming disadvantages can become advantages. Because I struggle for finding the right words in Hindi, I am forced to speak slowly, thus countering my tendency of speaking too fast that makes my English classes a strain to understand for some. Also, because I don’t know precise Hindi words, my language becomes simpler during my Hindi classes than in my English classes, thus making them more accessible to the audience.

Though exhausting, the engagements in Delhi were exhilarating, all the more so because I could see so many young devotees, both brahmacharis and congregation, hearing enthusiastically and serving vigorously, as was evident from the many temples coming up there. I felt inspired to see how Srila Prabhupada’s stress on focused outreach to youth is bearing rich fruit as many young leaders from the second generation are taking responsibilities in our movement as it prepares for its generational change of guard.
