GBC Minutes 2017 - Sannyasa Waiting List. The following are the candidates for sannyasa along with their respective waiting periods. "During the time of Lord Chaitanya, the influence of Shankaracarya in society was very strong. People thought that one could accept sannyasa only in the disciplic succession of Shankaracarya. Lord Chaitanya could have performed His missionary activities as a householder, but He found householder life an obstruction to His mission. Therefore He decided to accept the renounced order, sannyasa. Continue reading "Sannyasa Waiting List

On February 26th, under the direct inspiration and guidance of His Holiness Bhakti Caru Maharaja, the TOVP Fundraising Team consisting of Jananivas prabhu, Ambarisa prabhu, Mother Svaha and Vraja Vilas prabhu held a fundraiser at the Kolkata temple and raised an incredible $400,000 in pledges to everyone’s amazement. Led by the Lord in the form of His Padukas and Sitari, the TOVP Team inspired the devotees with the vision of this great world-changing project, bringing not only a sense of unity to all the devotees for the local preaching, but for the worldwide mission of Lord Gauranga’s samkirtan movement. Momentum is building as more and more devotees become enthused to help complete the TOVP construction and see the fulfillment of Srila Prabhupada’s vision. This is due to the fact that it is bringing the members of ISKCON together for a common worldwide cause, above and beyond their local interests, and that this worldwide cause is, in fact, inspiring the local causes to expand and grow. Hare KrishnaBy Navadwip Mandal Parikrama devotees

Parikrama is coming to its conclusion. Today we reached Rudradvipa which corresponds to the process of sakhyam, friendship. First we left our camp early morning at 5:30 am to board the very awaited boat ride across the Ganga. Reaching the land we walked about 2 km towards Rukumpur. There we heard about Lord Nityananda's marriage pastime which made the devotees cry in laughter. This Lila was expertly explained by HH Bhakti Nityananda Swami. There is a nice temple of Lord Nityananda along with His son Virachandra. Rudradvipa is named after Lord Shiva who always resides here, specifically Nila Lohita Shiva. When Vishnuswami came here with his disciples to describe the glories of the Lord, Lord Shiva appeared to them. " I am so happy with you. Because you are worshipping my Lord Krishna I want to bless you. Please ask me for a benediction. " Continue reading "Sri Navadvipa Mandala Parikrama- day 6

Timely, Relevant, and Much Needed
Giriraj Swami

Prabhupada in queue at airportToday, listening to Srila Prabhupada’s talks in Juhu, I heard something that struck me as especially timely and relevant. “Krishna says advesta sarva-bhutanam: You should not be envious to any living entity. But the present civilization means to become envious. I do not wish to criticize anyone, but this enviousness is the basis . . . Nationalism is also enviousness. ‘Why foreigners will come here?’ This is enviousness. Why should they not come? Who is foreigner and who is national? Everyone is son of God. Why should you distinguish? But because there is no Krishna consciousness, this discrimination between man and man, man and animal—so many discriminations. Even from the national point of view, national means anyone who is born in that country. But because one happens to be an animal, although he is a national, still, he is sent to the slaughterhouse—because there is no Krishna consciousness.”

The philosophy of Krishna consciousness is timeless—always timely and relevant. And, now perhaps more than ever, much needed.

Hare Krishna.

Yours in service,
Giriraj Swami

All glories to Sri Guru and Sri Gauranga!

Gaura Purnima - the auspicious appearance day of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu will be celebrated in a grand manner coming Sunday - March 12th, 2017 at ISKCON Scarborough.
Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu will be honored through an interactive joint presentation that will include narration, bhajan, and dance by Bhaktimarga Swami, Gaura-Shakti Kirtan group and Syamesvari respectively.

Gaura Purnima means "golden full moon," signifying that:
1) Lord Caitanya appeared during a full moon, and
2) The Lord blesses everyone with the soothing, moon like rays of His sublime teachings.

Who is Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu:
Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu's most important biographers, such as Shri Vrindavan das Thakur (Caitanya Bhagavat), Shri Murari Gupta (Caitanya Charita Mahakavya), Shri Locana das Thakur (Caitanya Mangal) & Shri Krishnadas Kaviraj (Caitanya Caritamrta) confirm that Lord Caitanya is Krshna Himself appearing in the role of His own devotee.
He accepted the mood and golden complexion of Srimati Radharani, His consort, and greatest worshiper.
Radha and Krsna became one to reveal the divine love of Goloka Vrindavan to the world.
If we are to understand Shri Krsna, we must do so through Lord Caitanya. First the giver, then the gift.
Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu is the most merciful and munificent incarnation of the Lord, whose mercy surpassed the bounds of mundane discrimination in the matter of caste, color, and creed.

CC Adi 14.1:
“Things that are very difficult to do become easy to execute if one somehow or other simply remembers Lord Caitanya Mahäprabhu. But if one does not remember Him, even easy things become very difficult. To this Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu I offer my respectful obeisances”.

Indians Gear Up For The Festival Of Color, And Some Americans, Too.
Caru das said that it had always had good participation of Indian-Americans. “But when westerners started flowing in like a river, the people from India became less visible. “But we still have several hundreds of Indian Americans, if not thousands, along with 50,000 Americans who gather at the temple from Spanish Fork and other neighboring cities like Springville and Provo for the two- day festival. This, in fact, is the largest Holy festival in the United States,” Adhikari said.

To a question, he said he believes that the festival appeals to Americans because in essence there is similarity between the messages of Lord Jesus Christ and Lord Krishna. “In the western culture, Lord Jesus Christ gave two commandments— love God with all your soul, all your heart and your entire mind, and said love your neighbor like you love yourself. Lord Krishna observed the Holi festival as a way of increasing love between himself and his devotees. So, originally it’s about divine love between Radha and Krishna,” he said.

On the second day of the Christchurch temple festival the devotees welcomed dignitaries, such as the local members of the National and Labour parties, police representatives and the President of the Multicultural Centre.

The guests broke coconuts for auspiciousness, cut the ribbon to the main entrance, listened to kirtan and watched a bharat-natyam dance performance.

Each one gave a speech appreciating the work of the Hare Krsna Movement and were later served sumptuous prasadam. In the afternoon devotees gave their remembrances of ISKCON Christchurch from the beginning to the present day.

Ecstasy in Christchurch, New Zealand, during the first Sunday Feast program after the earthquake (Album with photos)
During the earthquake, back in 2011, in the temple, pujari Sevananda Das had just finished offering midday arati, and several devotees were singing kirtan when intense tremors began shaking the three-foot marble deities of Sri Sri Nitai Gaurachandra violently.
Sevananda held tightly onto Them to protect Them, but Their Lordships were flung off the altar, taking Sevananda with Them. The heavy wooden altar followed, flying through the air and crashing on the ground, barely missing Sevananda.
“Lying there, dazed, I looked around,” Sevananda told ISKCON News back then. “The Deities had completely shattered, and there was an arm lying here, a foot there, a hand there. In the background, I could hear a devotee wailing, just crying out, ‘No!’ It was the most devastating experience ever.”

Grad Event

Bats were flying in their usual silent way and monkeys were busting balloons.  It wasn’t a circus act.  The hairy climbers made it to the edge of the awning over the stage.  One in particular grabbed the multi-coloured balloon arrangement and with his sharp finger nails went systematically from one bust to the next.  There was one stubborn balloon, the last one, that wouldn’t burst, so very cleverly, the monkey sunk his teeth into it, giving it the biggest bang of all.

We were in stitches laughing at the unrehearsed show.  The final deflation brought an uproarious applause.

Below the awning was the stage, where thirty grade twelve students from the Bhaktivedanta Gurukula and International School were about to receive their graduation awards.  It is a boy’s school.  The cultural program was a traditional Gotipua dance by primary boys. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gotipua

Very on-the-spot, I was made the Guest of Honour for the event, and was asked by the organizers to hand out certificates along with godsisters, Malati and Madri, to the worthy recipients.  I was also asked, spontaneously, to lead a kirtan.  “Your wish is my command,” I said to the person making the request.

It was a rouser of a kirtan and the participation in the chanting and dancing, almost reached the excitement of the monkey popping the balloons.

This was my main active event of the day.  My gout has taken a turn for the worse, just when inflammation was on the decline.  The obstinate foot is looking much like a balloon.

“Hey monkey, do you want to take a bite?”

Triumphs and Defeats

After the morning arati song, one of the temple administrators at Krishna Balarama Mandir announced book scores to the temple goers.

“Matchless Gifts (the temple boutique) sold 326 books.”  He also mentioned one other source, likely a book stall on the premises (I couldn’t quite hear).  There, too, over 300 pieces of transcendental literature was sold, mostly in Hindi and English.  That brings it to a tally of over 600 Bhaktivedanta Book Trust publications going out, on a slow day.

Good news!  People are seeking enlightenment.

One really nice couple from Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, had secured a flat (apartment) in the area.  His name is Dharma and hers is Manasi Ganga.  Although not present, they desired to have a house warming, Vedic style, with myself conducting the kirtan.

A group of brahmacaris (monks) accompanied me for the chanting, and oh, how sweet it was, although two of them sang with tone-deafness.  Well intentioned they were, but why sing so loud?  I felt it my duty to let them know that perhaps some lessons in voice would help.  They are Hindi-speaking but I believe they got the point.

For some reason or other, my gout got irritated again.  My medicines were running out and perhaps a spicy tomato soup didn’t help the situation.  My limp is accentuated again and I’ve been doing all I can to stave off further infection.

One medical person brought various flours, and turned them into dough to wrap around my left big toe.  This draws out the infection.  By morning, voila, the pain had subsided.

May the Source be with you!

Back in Krishna’s Back Yard

When I arrived in Vrndavana, it was a little late for darshan(viewing of the Krishna deities) but my craving for some veggie-filled Chow Mein was an irresistible one.  One manager at the Krsna Balarama Temple, Pancha Gauda, made sure the desire was fulfilled.

I did squeeze in a visit to dear friend, Gunagrahi Swami, suffering from cancer.  How is he dealing with it?  It’s the evening kirtans which he organizes that are keeping his spirits up.

Through the course of the day, I have been indulging in the book, Sannyasis in Modernity, covering high and low points in the not-long history of renouncers in the Hare Krishna movement.  Again, good research.

One gentleman came to me, near the temple, with a pressing question.  “I understand from the books, like Bhaktivinode’s Jaiva Dharma, that it is necessary to explore your sambhandha(unique and personal relationship with God) in order to attain self-realization.  How can this be achieved?”

My response to him was that relations among devotee peers is the way to Godhead.  “Let us achieve this channel first.  This is the green light.  Please the fellow servants and win the favour of the master.”

The man walked on in a calm mood, grateful to have something to dwell on.  I lingered on with the concept.  “Surely, this is the way of reaching the Supreme.  It is the blessings and well-wishes from those in our midst which earns us God’s favour.”

May the Source be with you!

Demystifying Reincarnation 1 - Incredible delusion or credible vision (video) by Chaitanya Charan Dasa.
Guest (4): Prabhupada, is it true that can a human body takes a form of a human body in the next birth?
Prabhupada: No. Krsna doesn’t say. Tatha dehantara-praptih [Bg. 2.13]. You will get another body, but that does not mean human body. That will depend on your price. Just like if I say, “When your coat is old and torn, you’ll purchase another coat.” So that another coat, what kind of coat, that will depend on your price, as you are able to pay. Similarly, your activities in this life will decide what body you are going to get next life.
Guest (4): Prabhupada, that, perhaps, contradicts with the theory of reincarnation?
Prabhupada: What is that incarnation theory? You are going to get another body. That is reincarnation. Now, what kind of body you are going to get, that will depend on your work. There are 8,400,000 different types and forms of body. So you are at liberty to work. Therefore the direction is there in the Bhagavad-gita, “You work like this. Then you get the body like this.” So this is risky life. Without knowing the law of God, without knowing how nature is working, how the living entity is getting different types of body, without this knowledge, if we simply keep ourself on the business of eating, sleeping, sex and defense like cats and dogs, this is very, very risky life.
So our Krsna consciousness movement is trying to save the human society from this risky life and to understand what is God, how he can go back to home, how he can get eternal life. This is our business.

Lord Krishna The best teacher. What makes a great teacher?…
→ Dandavats

Lord Krishna The best teacher.
What makes a great teacher? Teaching is one of the most complicated jobs today. It demands broad knowledge of subject matter, curriculum, and standards; enthusiasm, a caring attitude, and a love of learning; knowledge of discipline and classroom management techniques; and a desire to make a difference in the lives of young people. With all these qualities required, it’s no wonder that it’s hard to find great teachers. Lord Krishna is the best teacher the world has ever seen. Today’s teachers, professors must learn some of these qualities from this great teacher.

T teaches by example- Lord didn’t only speak the wisdom but He himself followed that. Lord is not hypocrite, He does whatever he speaks(BG 3.23). He need not to perform any actions but just for sake of teaching the world he does that. Teachers have the great responsibility to walk their talk because they are leaders or role models for innocent kids.

E expert- Lord is so expert that he converted war field into classroom. And addressed Arjuna in the midst of war. Arjuna was asking varieties of questions and without getting bewildered or confused even for a second Lord replied them so perfectly. Today’s most of the teachers lack this skill. Lord gave importance to field knowledge because life situations are not always cozy and comfortable like well furnished and air conditioned classrooms(BG 2.11 onwards).

A acknowledges the real problem- at Kurukshetra apparent problem or issue was the war between Kauravas and Pandavas but lord rather than instructing Arjuna on How to fight he instructed on why to fight. Because he realised that real problem was not a war but tussle going on in the heart of Arjuna(BG 2.3). So rather than complaining that students don’t study, tell them importance of study or try to investigate what’s the real reason?

C concerned- lord is very concerned out of compassion for all beings. Teachers of this world sometimes behave partially towards their students but Lord is impartial. He made this supreme knowledge available to all humanity through Arjuna. Whoever follows that he is promoted to next grade of spiritual level(BG 2.72).

H holistic- lord introduced holistic philosophy which was not only useful for temporary war fighting but also for living a life as a successful person. Good teachers are not only masters of their own subject but they teach student how to live a life. They guide student like Lord guided Arjuna. Arjuna became winner of the war as well as returned to eternal abode of lord after his life in this world(BG 18.78).

E eager- many times teacher gives up the hope for one who fails again and again. But we find that lord is so eager for uplifting the conditioned souls of the world that he himself comes again and again to this world or arranges for prophets or saintly beings or inspires a person from within(BG 4.7).

R ready to repeat- just after whole Gita was spoken Lord asked Arjuna, do you remember everything, are you able to digest it properly, did you get whatever I say or should I repeat the whole knowledge again(BG 18.72). Good teachers rather than getting angry at students who ask them to repeat the subject matter, they repeat it.

Disciples of Srila Prabhupada from the USA and Canada started preaching in France in the late sixties and a lot of people joined the Hare Krishna movement. On a brief visit to Paris in 1971 Srila Prabhupada gave a lecture at the Olympia Theater. The Deities of Sri Sri Jagannatha, Baladeva and Subhadra had already been carved by a French devotee, Dayamrgya dasa. Srila Prabhupada considered Paris a very important city for preaching and he visited again several times. It was in 1973 that he installed Sri Sri Radha Paris-Isvara. Sri Sri Nitai Sacisuta were later installed by his disciples. After many years of struggle, the devotees in Paris managed to purchase a property that became the new home for the gorgeous Deities. A Devotee's Journey - Subuddhi Devi Dasi
By: Krishna Rajesh

How does one begin to realize that their life is lacking something? How do they realize that they are in fact searching for something? And most of all, how do they find it?

For many of us, day to day life seems dry, if not full on boring and miserable. Some of us have our families to support us through life, and others have other means of relieving themselves. But some search for something more; a better, if not a more permanent solution. Some sort of soul-searching. A journey to find that one thing that will make our lives seem meaningful.

For many in the ISKCON community, this journey is what led them here; to become a practitioner of the Hare Krishna faith, where they are surrounded by seemingly unending spiritual bliss at all times. Such was the story of Subuddhi Devi Dasi as well.

Subhuddi Devi Dasi (previously known as Subash Taneja and affectionately known as Mother Subuddhi) was born into an originally Krishna conscious family. She had learnt to follow the traditional ways of a Vaishnava life from her childhood. But just like the many people who come from similar backgrounds, she had not fully understood the meaning behind Krishna consciousness; let alone appreciate it for what it is. Things had begun to change for her when she came to Canada in 1971. She became aware of the emptiness that was within her, and realized that she was desperately looking for something to make her feel whole.

One day, at a store, while working as a cashier, when she noticed one devotee, wearing saffron colored clothes, holding a packet of milk in one hand and a Krishna story book in the other.

“As soon as my eyes went on Krishna’s book, I said ‘Oh my god! Krishna in Canada?!’”, said Mother Subuddhi, during an interview while reminiscing about it.

This fateful encounter with a devotee soon led to her discovery of the temple, which at that time was located at 187 Gerard Street, around the end of September, 1971. Mother Subuddhi, along with her husband, then drove up to the temple. At a first glance, they were surprised.

“When we went to the temple that evening, my husband said that it doesn’t look like a temple, because it looks like a small little house! Not like the temple one would expect; with big domes and everything.”

Her husband then decided to knock the door, and see for himself if this was truly a temple. To his pleasant surprise, he was greeted by a nice lady, dressed in a white saree and wearing tilaka; the symbol of a Vaishnava which adorns the forehead, along with a bindi and a nose stud. With a gentle smile, she greeted him saying “Hare Krishna!”.

“My husband came running to me. He said ‘this is the right place!’”

Mother Subuddhi then realized that what she was desperately looking for, to fill up the hole within her had been found. And that was ISKCON. Ever since then, she has been regularly coming to the temple.

“I am simply glued to it!”

She says that the temple is her life and breath. She comes to the temple two to three times a day, continuously doing different services and looking for other ways to contribute to the temple. She believes that she gets the opportunity to do so because of Srila A.C. Bhaktivendanta Swami Prabhupada’s mercy. He is the founding Acharya of ISKCON and is also Subuddhi Devi Dasi’s spiritual master. He is also the one who gave Subuddhi her spiritual name, after getting initiated (a rite of passage for practicing Hare Krishnas).

She likes to do service and she is very passionate about it. And she is happy to serve the Deities, the temple, and the devotees. She says it motivates and keeps her going. It is her connection to Krishna. And she is always inspired by how the Krishna conscious movement has changed so many lives from all over the world.

Subuddhi Devi Dasi’s story is one of the many life stories that have been changed and revolutionized by ISKCON and Krishna consciousness.

Travel Adventures of a Krishna Monk.
Bhagavad-gita describes that God is a being who manifests at different levels. Although people are not attracted to the external practice of renunciation, they are attracted to the result of renunciation, peace of mind. There are universal characteristics of God, and in Bhagavad-gita we see the personal identity of God, Krishna, who has these characteristics. In the story of the prodigal son, the word ‘prodigal’ means wasteful. When Europeans went to India, they saw the worship of many gods and assumed it was similar to pre-Christian worship of many gods as in Rome or Greece. The different gods have different responsibilities. But reading the Bhagavad-gita, it is clear there is one Supreme God.

Saranga Thakur when asked by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu to accept disciples ,replied: " But my Lord, I don't see anybody who is qualified for initiation". In answer to this Lord Gauranga said: " When you initiate them they will become qualified" . Thus with firm faith Saranga initiated the first person he met the next morning which happened to be a dead body. He spoke the diksha mantra into his ear and by the grace of Krishna the boy came back to life. Maharaja also revealed to us that Vasudeva Datta is an incarnation of Prahlad Maharaja. About His Grace Subhavilas Dasa
It has been over 40 years since he joined ISKCON. He saw devotees chanting on the streets in Toronto and was immediately attracted. He started going to the temple, which at that time in the late 60's was in a small house. He met Srila Prabhupada first time in Chicago.

Srila Prabhupada instructed him and Visvakarma Dasa to secure the current ISKCON Toronto temple and had the great fortune to assist Srila Prabhupada's mission in this manner. He used him as his instrument again to help secure the ISKCON Chicago temple where Sri Kishor Kishori reside today. There were many temple openings and festivals that he has been blessed to coordinate and be a part of in the early days of ISKCON.

After his brahminical initiation by Srila Prabhupada, he had the privilege to serve ISKCON in many ways including:
Vice President of ISKCON Toronto in the 70's;
 President of ISKCON Chicago in the early 80's;
Zonal Secretary for USA mid-west in the 80's; and
GBC(Governing Body Commission) appointed him as Global  Coordinator for Community Relations in the 90.

WHO WILL BE CROWNED KING?

Discontent, depression, disconnection,
or dissatisfaction, are our friends
if we take them as messengers
to help us to change course
pushing us to leave our comfort
zone and get off the couch,
to be uncomfortable to strive
more than merely survive.

This is such a common theme,
(for me) but sharing's still important
as many on a spiritual path,
or those who strive for excellence
confront obstacles to realizing
their goals and life mission
so please don’t mind my repetition,
only think if it can help you rise up.

Anger towards children.
H G Mahatma Prabhu here writes to a devotee how to deal with children when they don’t listen and what to do when that might makes us angry..
“Nothing can make you angry if you don’t allow it.
Don’t teach your children to respond to situations with anger; teach them to respond with kindness, understanding and help. How do you teach them? You act with kindness and understanding. Your kids will be just like you. You are their acarya. What they see you doing as they are grow up tells them that this is how to live, how to respond to difficulties, etc.
Make the decision to improve and pray to Krsna for help. Understand that He will help you only if you want to be helped. Once you deeply decide to improve it will not be difficult to make changes in your attitude. You have to take the first big step. Then Krsna will do His magic in your life.
One big test for us is to be nice to those we don’t have to be nice to. Of course, we must be nice to our superiors, so we do it. But to be nice to equals or juniors is more difficult because we can more easily get away with being unkind. However, we are meant to show compassion to juniors, not anger.
Anger sometimes has its place. It can be used to teach a lesson. For example, if a lesson cannot be communicated in any other way, we may show anger so that the children know we are serious. But understand two things: when we show this kind of anger, we are not angry, and we only rarely show anger. When we only rarely show it, they know you are serious and are thus angry for a good reason. When you show anger often, they won’t take it seriously.
I hope this helps you.
Hare Krsna, Mahatma Das”

Bhakti-tirtha Swami
→ KKSBlog

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, 27 June 2016, Radhadesh, Belgium, BTS Memorial Evening)

Even before coming to Krsna consciousness, Bhakti-tirtha Swami was not an ordinary person. Even before coming to Krsna consciousness he was a public leader at university, one of the first entering an all-white environment, majoring psychology and African studies. He was the one who was part of the movement that changed America, linking up with personalities like Martin Luther King Jr. Even then he was not an ordinary man, even then he was a leader, the one who was thinking beyond his self-interest. Even then he was one who would look at the benefit of others.

Once he met Srila Prabhupada and saw love in Prabhupada’s eyes, he was a changed man. As he stated many years later, ‘Although, you, Prabhupada, gave us everything – still we have failed to fully realize what you gave. But let us remember that everything we have came from you. Some of us are now serving as gurus, but let us remember that all we got we got from you, otherwise we will “be a mouse again”!’

Then, after meeting Srila Prabhupada he was sold out and was ready to take any risk for preaching. Preaching behind the Iron Curtain, in communist countries, he was somehow or other trying to put Prabhupada’s books in libraries, sometimes at great risk, like in East Germany facing the notorious stasy (secret police). But somehow or other Krsna protected him on that mission. And he was careful to seek Krsna’s protection – by chanting more than prescribed minimum number of rounds, by really dedicating himself full time.

It was not that sannyasa came somewhere later on as an afterthought, rather it was within him all the time. Because all along he had that extraordinary eagerness, a force greater than what the others showed – in his sadhana, in his preaching, in his dedication. Not surprising that he took sannyasa.

One of the things he was famous far, was being a dancer. He would dance! One thing about his dancing that always struck me – because I was there so many times when he danced in South Africa in Ratha-yatra kirtans – but the thing was that he never danced alone but somehow engaged everyone, taking us by the hand. I was there so many times, and it was so typical for him that he would take us by the hand and make us run forward and backward, because he was so inclusive. Everyone was moving! Or driving the gurukula boys mad in Mayapur.

He was an original thinker, say a free spirit if you like. A man who worked by inspiration and from the heart. That was not always understood. I remember his cane with the lion head – not everyone liked it. I did! And when he was told that it was not suitable, ah, I dreaded that day! But that cane was just perfect – a cane with a big lion mouth right there in a front. I liked it!

So he was ready to embrace people, to be one with them. He went to Africa. He took sannyasa from Kirtanananda Swami who had his history, a different side to his nature, and there was a friendship between the two. So when ISKCON leadership dealt strongly with Kirtanananda Swami due to his activities and decided to expel him, Bhakti-tirtha Swami did not like it. He would have liked another approach, an approach to make him turn around, an approach to bring him back in and as a result Bhakti-tirtha Swami left. He did not leave ISKCON but he left America and went to Africa, alone, to no man’s land. In Nigeria, Ghana etc. there were no devotees – he was the only devotee in these places. But somehow or other he turned it around and connected with people so deeply, and was ready to reciprocate.

He was made an honorable chief and he wore an honorable dress. At that time he also created his Institute for Applied Spiritual Technology in Washington DC. I also went there. He became so close to the people he was involved with, by extending himself completely to anyone and everyone. Any outsider could see that here is a saint, here is a wonderful person because he was emanating love. That was everywhere. Thus, what he did in Africa was not only creating a few followers by initiating a few people, but he turned the minds of heads of state. He was able to create many temples at that time, all alone, and now his sannyasa disciples who are now leading, are all from there.

In South Africa he was dancing in Soweto, a place where there is a history of bloodshed and violence due to racial oppression. So Krsna consciousness coming with Bhakti-tirtha Swami to Soweto was not a timid appearance. It was really a victory march or victory dance rather! Everyone danced and he danced in front and everyone knew how to dance and jump. But that was just like in the case of Caitanya Mahaprabhu dancing in front of Jagannatha at the Ratha Yatra in Jagannath Puri when he jumped way above the crowd and everyone was just looking. People were saying, ‘Who is that man!?’ His life was also, just like that dance in Soweto, a victory march in so many areas.

After having been in Africa for so many years, he left again. GBC stared having sort of feeling, ‘Where is our Bhakti-tirtha Maharaj? He should come back…’ Eventually he came back. And when he came back in Mayapur, he brought a glorious lecture where he described an amazing glory of ISKCON and success of Prabhupada’s movement. He was saying how it was changing the world and how the demigods are reciprocating and appearing and coming down. The spirit from that class that I remember, as I was there, was again a spirit of victory. He came back into ISKCON and brought in something that was forgotten. Into the society that had become regimented he brought back the heart. When he came back we all felt, ‘Yes, the heart is back again! We are here together in one family and together we are all somehow or other going back to Godhead!’

He created this incredible sense of community and doing it all together on our way back to Godhead. So in this way his life was a great victory, no doubt about it. But yet we see that he gave up all these things, his previous identities, as he wrote in his last Vyasa-puja offering to Srila Prabhupada, ‘Goodbye Johnny Boy, John Favors, Abdul Toshombe, Ghanasyam, Bhakti-tirtha Swami, Swami Krishnapad…’ He was saying goodbye to all his identities! And that is death, that one has to say goodbye to whatever and it does not come as nicely as one plans it. Death comes in its own way and it just takes away. It took away the foot of a dancer – what can we say?

But he was not defeated by his own slot of destruction, because even while leaving he left by bringing everyone together. Never have we seen such a departure, where someone brought everyone together, sharing his last moments with so much depth and so much love. It was just extraordinary!

And there also we can see again that he was victorious over death, entering into the pastimes – maybe pastimes with Prabhupada, maybe pastimes in the spiritual world, or maybe both! In the spiritual world dancing in the dancing competition, surely now with spiritual feet, jumping higher than ever. And yet also somewhere with Prabhupada again, as one of Prabhupada’s trusted men upon whom he can rely, and to whom he can give an impossible order – and it will be done! How eager was Prabhupada to hear the reports from Ghanasyam about his preaching! Srila Bhakti-tirtha Maharaj, ki jaya!

American pop artist Miley Cyrus to have a Hindu wedding.
She has often posted photos of herself reading Srila Prabhupada’s books and recently published some of her house turned into an ashram. She is now planning to get married with Vedic ritual, dressed in a sari, somewhere in Nepal.
There is a lot of talk in the media about her interest in the Vedic culture, a careful google search will reveal a lot of relative information.

Today while cleaning up the winter debris in our backyard garden, I removed a stringy pile of dead leaves from our Japanese iris. Just below this dry tangle I suddenly beheld a set of tiny, but vibrant new shoots that had eagerly poked their heads above the ground.
Seeing these little green treasures emerging from the frozen soil, I was suddenly invigorated and sat admiring the enthusiasm and spontaneity of this little plant. The miracle of life in ones bhakti garden is sometimes covered by the debris of mental cares and useless desires for happiness in this material world. Just below the surface however, lives the instinctive urge to love Krsna, the life and soul of every living being. During this dim season, clear away the old leaves and shriveled matter that have accumulated in your bhakti garden and look carefully for signs of life and growth. Remember how you were first attracted to Krsnas names and wanted desperately to be near His devotees. Remember how good you feel and how the problems in your life evaporate just by giving your God-given attention to the most basic bhakti practices. Make some new vow or a goal that will spirit you forward until spring arrives. The roots in the bhakti garden are always alive and well below the ground and with a little care from the gardener, they freely send forth their beautiful shoots, buds and flowers. Vaisesika das
