Fingers Walking

I let my fingers do some walking along the shoulder and upper backs of fellow monks.  They were either lunching at the time or just sitting in conversation.  I went around the tables where they were seated.  It was my service to them.

Most of the swamis, monks and seniour men I approached, were aging and stiff.  I allotted a minute and a half on average.  Oh, they appreciated it alright.

I’m also keeping up therapy for the gout foot.  That means massage.  Thanks to my helper Karuna Sindhu, who is, in my mind, a super-star brahmacari (monk).  When I come to think of it, we have, in Canada, some good men, and the ones we have are of good quality.  There’s Hayagriva, Brihat, Nitai Ram, and more.  They are exceptional.  I’m blessed with their company.

This evening we presented “Mr. Puri” the drama, to gurus, swamis and seniour men and women.  Our cast and crew were on fire with the performance.  It’s such a magical story, profiling a walking monk by the name of Madhavendra.  He has interactions with the people of his time, in the 15thcentury, and with the deity of Krishna.

The source of the material that provided the story for the script is from the Bengali text Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita.  It’s translated to English—thank God.  A good read.

A Note

As the sanga(meeting) was about to start among us (there’s eighty of us monks), a note was passed over to me by one of the more jovial monks.

“Why are you cranky?” was the hand-written message.  I didn’t think I was but, again, he’s jovial.

“Because…” I wrote in response, passing it back.

“Because of the meetings?” he sent back.

“No!”  I responded. “I’m happy.”

“Let’s walk to Vaikuntha (the spiritual world),” he added onto the note.

My response, which ended the back-and-forth was, “Can’t walk, seriously.  I’ve got gout.”

With that I revealed my inflamed left foot.

Jolly Swami (the jovial one) bulged his eyes in surprise, and then the meeting began.  So, hush…

The above light exchange may be typical behaviour from some of us, but when required, everyone becomes grave.  Our topic was a look at four generations among spiritual groups.  Statistics and surveys have been done (research) of groups who didn’t survive and those who did.  We viewed trends.  We identified some challenges that make it hard to pass the torch onto what’s now a third generation.  It was quite the eye-opener.

Somehow, substance must be passed on and less so, form.  In other words, essence is stronger than structure; relationships are more than rules and formalities.

It was felt that a body does not surpass the soul, however, the two must function together.

Looking at What is Great

It was the second of our AGM meetings and good friend, Anuttama, presented a review of fifty years of the Hare Krishnas in the world.  Of course, it is an old tradition–devotion to the deity Krishna–but formalized and registered, it’s been a golden jubilee year.

Among events that occurred to honour this milestone, Anuttama spoke briefly about my U.S. walk from New York to midway America–Seward, Nebraska, to be exact.  He mentioned my response to the question “Why are you doing this?” while the walk was in progress was “It’s to make America great again!”  That drew laughter.  Mind you, the remark was in-house.  It’s not what I would tell media.  At least, I don’t think I would.

Very frankly though, these pilgrimages are purposefully executed to encourage spiritual life.  The major imbalance in society is that beyond the survival mode and the excessive sensory stimulations that the general populace is catering to, there is a dearth of spiritual development.

Here in Mayapur, a spiritual culture has blossomed and it is a remarkable achievement.  In the midst of what once was a third-world district, and a recently oppressive government in Bengal, a marvelous community has formed.

If we are careful with planning, monitoring and staying inspirational, this community will be a model showcase.  The major challenge is the rampant motor bikes.  Walking and bicycles need to be encouraged.

K.K. Swami & Me

I was greeted by an American monk who spends most of his time in Europe.

“It’s the top of the morning,” said Krsna Ksetra Swami, very optimistically.

He had expressed empathy over my slight waddle when walking near him the other day.  I mentioned that I spent a good hour lying down wiggling and stretching my toes as therapy for the gout.

“Toe yoga,” he said

“Yes, that’s right.  Stretching all parts of our machinery should be a regular affair.”  And for me now, it’s the left toe.

K.K. Swami has always been nice to me and has included me in his writing projects.  His books, Rama Smaranam and Gaura Smaranam are compilations of monologues of Vedic personalities.  In Rama Smaranam I contributed a piece voiced by the mystic, Marich, who took the form of a golden deer.  And in Gaura Smaranam I provided a monologue from Jagai who was the less evil of the two brothers.  Womanizers, drunkards and gamblers that they were, I found it fun to explore the anatomy of the more vile type of person.

I had the pleasure to open up the AGM this same morning with the song to honour the guru.  I was quite alive for that, however, ten minutes into the meeting, fatigue hit me.  I felt bad to doze for a few seconds.  Session #2 on this great day to remember the saint, Nityananda, and I was perhaps redeeming myself by His mercy.  I was perked up.

Hare KrishnaBy Bhakti Chaitanya Swami

Srila Prabhupada: In 1936, just on the 13th, December, I wrote him one letter. Not 13th. I think by the beginning of December, 1936, I wrote one letter to Guru Maharaja. I knew he was little kind upon me, so I wrote that “Guru Maharaja, you have got many disciples. I am also one of them. But they are doing direct service to you. Some of them are brahmacaris, some of them sannyasis, but I am a householder. I cannot…” Of course, I was giving sometimes some monetary help, but I could not give any direct service, so I asked him that “If there is any particular service I can do for you?” So that letter was replied in 13th December, dated 13th December, from Puri. And he passed away on the 31st December. Just a fortnight before. So the reply was the same as he wanted me to do this preaching work in 1922, when I first met him, that “You try to preach whatever you have learned from me to the English-knowing people in English. That will do good to you and to the people to whom you shall preach. That is my instruction.” From Srila Prabhupada’s lecture on His Divine Grace Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami Prabhupada’s Appearance Day – Los Angeles, February 7, 1969 Continue reading "From Sri Mayapur Chandrodaya Mandir – Srimad Bhagavatam class, February 15, 2017 – That Saintly Person

Ragini Dasi, Srila Prabhupada’s disciple from France leaving this world soon.
Mondakini Dasi: Dear friends, Ragini Prabhu has been struggling with cancer for many years now. She has been very brave the whole time, taking shelter in chanting and hearing with gratitude and grace. For a while now, her health has been deteriorating. Last night, it became worst and the medical team told she could leave this world in a few days or in a few hours.
Some of you may know her, some not. Let us join our prayers to give her support at this crucial time and to wish her from the bottom of our hearts the perfect destination in this big journey that is waiting for each of us, that she may find complete shelter at the lotus feet of her eternal loving father Srila Prabhupada.

Dreaming of Krsna
→ KKSBlog

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, 18 September 2016, Midrand, South Africa, Bhagavad-gita 9.9)

Question: When Krsna appears in a devotee’s dream, does it have any spiritual significance?

Yes, of course, it does. It is mercy. However, when Krsna appears in our dream, it may not be Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, giving us a full darshan in the dream. It may just the drawing that we saw in a cartoon and that drawing is now sort-of moving in our dream. I just spoiled your dreams, right! I am really sorry to spoil your dreams. Then again, say that Krsna is revealing himself and that we ARE seeing Krsna in the dream. It is possible. And even if we see the cartoon figure, still Krsna is working through the cartoon deity and giving us a darshan and that is also Krsna’s mercy. So, it is always mercy and we can see where we are at by our reaction to the dream.

We read in the Caitanya Caritamrta about Krsnadas Kaviraja Goswami who had a dream of Lord Nityananda. Krsnadas Kaviraja became ecstatic in the dream. He just fell to the ground in the dream and offered his obeisances. He was just overwhelmed and Nityananda said to him, “Go to Vrindavan and there you will attain all things.” When he woke up, he was just in ecstasy. He was just crying in ecstasy. He was completely overwhelmed and that dream was a life-changing experience. He just went off to Vrindavan, right there and then he left for Vrindavan. So, here we can see how deep a dream goes.

You know, it is not like, “You know, Prabhu, I had an interesting dream last night.”
“Oh, did you?”
“Yeah, I dreamed of Krsna.”
“No, really? Far out, Prabhu! Well, what was he doing?”
“Oh well, he was playing his flute and he had some sweets in the cup and he even threw me one! It was nectar!”
“Wow, what a dream. Well, three months ago, I had a dream of Krsna and Krsna was riding on an elephant. Oh yes, and I was riding there too.”
“Oh really?”

But what did the dreams do to us? Was it a life-changing experience? We get darshan of the deities and Krsna is there on the altar but to what extent are we there? In the same way, we get darshan in a dream and Krsna is there but to what extent are we there? That is the question. Anyway, dreaming of Krsna is great, so may all of you dream of Krsna!

What does anti-ISKCON mean?

When we label someone what is our intention?
Is it to elevate, chastise or keep a individual in their place
One of the most interesting labels I’ve been given and used effectively to sway a committee against myself was that my blog; and thus by default me as an individual is anti-ISKCON. What is most disturbing is that the word of one individual was enough to seal my fate and no one spoke checked or asked, indeed I’m not anti-ISKCON but anti individuals leaving ISKCON due to the corporate we have rules management style.
The thing is we can read, listen and watch Srila Prabhupada and one thing I’ve observed is his compassion and understanding of individuals he knew his disciples would have their own battles and difficulties along the way. He dealt fairly and most importantly didn’t want anyone to leave ISKCON admit is to be a home for everyone, not an elite or those who have no problems following rules.
It’s interesting that when one becomes so wrapped up in “we have rules Prabhu” we forget this is Sri Chaitanya Sankirtan Movement and in this age of Kali there is no other way than the chanting of the holy name’s, it’s the power of the Mahamantra not enforcement of rules.
Srila Prabhupada started the whole movement based on this chanting, indeed the three greatest gifts, harinama, books, prasadam with the simple instruction we distribute them.
And their is no greater joy than these three things.
Upon initiation Srila Prabhupada then introduced then four regulative principles, I like to call them the four protections as it saves those who follow them from great hardship and suffering. It takes time to progress to the point when following is second nature, fall down is and should be expected but this does not reduce the person’s sincerity or determination and the mantra we have rules seriously doesn’t help.
When I look at life long followers many have had problems, fall down and difficulties but it is not rules that have kept them but friendship a personal relationship with a devotee who like Srila Prabhupada is full of compassion for the fallen soul. Friendship and the getting together to chant and share prasadam is more powerful than rule following, and for some this is where they are at and happy and so my question is why push them and make the person unhappy?
It appears that being wrapped up in rules and courses we forgot Srila Prabhupada wanted personal relationship.
For me that’s the key, and by our honesty with each other great strength can be drawn and great progress on a spiritual path of self realisation can be achieved.
Friendship not rules is the key
And that was Srila Prabhupada success he was friend and ever well wisher to all introspective of rules following or not as long as they wanted to chant Hare Krishna and render some service, so even today we see the different flavours of disciples of Srila Prabhupada and that for me says it all from the rule followers to those who just enjoy chanting.
Each perfect in their own way, this for me is ISKCON able to accommodate and be a home for everyone.
And I am reminded and end on a comment Srila Prabhupada said “please try to get on with each other” for he knew we would be all individual and different, let’s celebrate this.

But that makes me anti-ISKCON I believe

The Creator’s Cruelty and the Saints’ Selflessness
→ The Spiritual Scientist

āḥ kim artham idaṁ cetaḥ

satām ambhodhi-durbharam

iti krudheva durvedhāḥ

para-duḥkhair apūrayat

āḥ — aargh!;  kim — how; artham — much; idam — this; cetaḥ — heart; satām — of the saintly souls; ambhodhi-durbharam — unfathomable like the ocean; iti — thus thinking; krudheva — being angry; durvedhāḥ — the cruel creator; para-duḥkhaiḥ — with the sorrows of others; apūrayat — filled;

“Aargh! How deep is the heart of these saintly souls, just like the ocean bed.” — thinking in this way and angry due to being unable to fathom it, the cruel creator of the world filled the hearts of the saintly souls with the sorrows of other living entities.

— Subhāṣita-ratna-bhāṇḍāgāra, Sajjana-praśaṁsā,

This text uses a rhetorical expression to highlight its main message: the selfless compassion of the saintly.

The rhetorical expression is: the creator is cruel. The mood here is reminiscent of the mood in a verse from the celebrated Gopi-gita (song of the gopis) found in Srimad-Bhagavatam’s tenth canto. Therein, the gopis deem the creator foolish for having made eyelids that blinked, for such blinking prevented them from relishing Krishna’s beauty continuously (10.31.15). The point of that verse is not that the creator is foolish, but that the gopis’ love is so great that they can’t bear even one moment of visual separation from Krishna. Similarly, the point of this text is not that the creator is cruel, but that the saintly are so sublimely selfless that, though they have no distress of their own account, they take up anxieties to remove others’ distress.

The saintly are attached to Krishna, the all-attractive reservoir of all pleasure. Through this divine attachment, they relish the supreme happiness. Yet they don’t rest on their spiritual laurels, delighting in their own bliss – they strive tirelessly to share their bliss with others.

Unlike the saintly, we are conditioned souls attached to worldly pleasures. Such pleasures, being temporary, become sources of misery (Bhagavad-gita 05.22). Despite experiencing such miseries repeatedly, we can’t give up our attachments. Why? Because our mind and senses often go out of our control and drag us to worldly objects. Thus, by our kama (desires) and our karma (actions), we perpetuate our worldly entanglements and distresses.

Motivated by compassion, the saintly strive to help us. By their personal realization, they know that worldly attachment causes misery, whereas attachment to Krishna brings happiness – so the most sustainable way to go beyond misery is become attached to Krishna instead of worldly objects (Bhagavad-gita 6.32). They have realization that. So, to help us spiritualize our attachment, they share the message of bhakti-yoga.

This mood of selflessly sharing bhakti wisdom is movingly demonstrated in a prayer of the great saint, Prahlada Maharaja, in Bhagavatam’s seventh canto. He declares that he is not worried about his own liberation, for he is already absorbed in relishing Krishna’s glories, which is a post-liberated state; he is worried about the godless who burden themselves with futile hopes for worldly pleasures. (7.9.43).

Similar selfless compassion is seen in our times in Srila Prabhupada. At the advanced age of seventy, he embarked single-handedly with practically no money and no contacts on a perilous journey to America for sharing bhakti wisdom. He accepted incredible difficulties for establishing from the scratch a global spiritual mission. Thereafter too, he had to oversee scores of centers all over the world and train hundreds of young disciples who knew next to nothing about spiritual life. Yet he cheerfully and gallantly accepted all the difficulties as a service to God and humanity.

Once, a disciple complained that assisting in the responsibility of the mission was stressing him. Reassuring him, Srila Prabhupada memorably proclaimed, “Your anxiety for serving Krishna will take you to Krishna.” We who have become spiritual seekers don’t yet have the compassion or self-control of the saintly. Still, in a mood of service to them and for our own purification, we can strive to share bhakti wisdom with others.

The more we help others overcome worldly illusions by equipping them with spiritual insights and practices, the more we become spiritually absorbed ourselves and go beyond worldly illusions. Thus, by sharing spirituality to help others, we help ourselves too.

Formation of a good habit: Rising Early
Question. It is still a challenge for me to wake up early, so it is often difficult for me to finish chanting my rounds before class, and I often need to finish them later in the day. I have found that I can finish my chanting in the morning if I do not have homework to do, but it is a challenge for me to motivate myself to wake up early enough to have time to do a lot of homework and also do all of my chanting. Do you have any advice that might help me to motivate myself to wake up earlier? Hopefully I will be able to solve this problem next semester by having more time in the afternoon and evening to do my homework.
Answer by Romapada Swami.
1) Good habits are slow to form; bad habits are slow to dissolve.
Be patient for the good habit to evolve; continue to strive for early rising (or any other good habit, for that matter). Allow even that it may take some years to fully become established. While being patient remain fixed in your determination.
Set your goal of WHEN you will rise at an increment that is modest, but doable. Then maintain that standard for some time before you move to the next increment. Repeat. In this way gradually approach your goal.
The first Meditations Upon Krishna that I created was on this very topic: good habit formation. Bhaktivinode Thakur wrote about it in Amnaya Sutra. (Meditation 3)
2) Anticipation!
During the evening before you take rest, fix your mind in anticipation of rising early! Contemplate the core reasons why this will be so beneficial, what inner strength and spiritual strength will arise due to rising early next morning. This mental focus will provide a huge boost in your waking up and rising at a time when you want to.
3) Strength Coming from a Relationship of Dedication and Love
In spiritual life, the role of bhakti-sakti, or the strength that comes for a loving relationship with those who are guiding us in KC'ness, is a huge source of strength for making forward progress.
In addition to efforts for self-improvement, you can draw upon an added impetus of a loving relationship. For example: “I know that it is the advice of my spiritual master (or those guiding me in my spiritual life) for me to rise early, and I know that he will be very pleased if I can accomplish this – plus the fact that I am absolutely confident that by so doing my entire KC'ness will be lifted by performing my sadhana early each morning. Let me try to do this to please him!”
This is not a guilt mood, nor a fruitive mood (seeking praise or acclaim). It is a mood of devotion and love. This connects with and is enacted from the constitutional position of all souls! Connect with that energy, and you will find an enormous source of strength to move forward. And a lot of inner contentment + happiness also!
Hare Krsna!

Sanga of ISKCON GBCs, Gurus and Sannyasis in Mayapur.
Most religious organizations fail to survive past four generations. These generations are tasked with challenge of preserving the original teachings of their founder. How each generation successfully navigates issues that arise provide the foundation for the next generation. To illustrate, Srila Prabhupada as the Founder Acharya of ISKCON, is the first generation. His disciples are ISKCON’S second generation. The third generation are the disciples of Srila Prabhupada’s disciples. Lastly the fourth generation are the disciples of the disciples of Prabhupada’s disciples. The way to understand Srila Prabhupada’s intention is to understand his instructions in context. With each successive generation intention, then context and instruction become more blurred and the purity is compromised.

Hare KrishnaBy Vaisesika Das

It is mentioned that a doctor will not let the last vestige of the disease stay within the body of the person, so Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Krishna are vigilant to weed out the last vestiges in the devotee and the devotee is cooperating the hard way is to drag one’s legs. The easy way is we call VLCs, the Voluntary Life Changers. We see it coming, we see there is an opportunity so rather than wait until it's done to you so you are forced to surrender. Vedas, Bible, Koran…
→ The Enquirer

Q: How can we know that the Vedas are really the recorded experiences of the supreme being and not just an ancient document of strong philosphy that humans came up with?

Be more concerned with the content than the author. By knowing the content, you get to know the author. The more deeply you dig into the content of the Veda, the more self-evident it becomes to your direct experience that the origin of the content is not human imagination or inference. The more deeply and clearly you dig into the content, and try to digest and apply it, the more the divine nature of its origin becomes clear.

Q: Does vedic philosophy accept other flawless sources besides vedic sources ? What about the bible or the koran ?

Even amongst books considered “Vedic” not all is considered to be highest authority. For example, we distinguish śruti and smṛti. One way of making this distinction is to classify śruti as the original mantras of the Veda, the higher authority, and smṛti having the sense of elaborating on those mantra and applying their principles to particular times, places and circumstances. Manu smṛti (Laws of Manu) is a popular example of culturally relevant smṛti. Perhaps we can say that the Bible and Koran are types of smṛti-śāstra. These are not flawless sources of divine knowledge, but are primarily implementations of social and moral ramifications of concepts revealed by the flawless sources of divine knowledge.

No more suffering
→ KKSBlog

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, 20 January 2005)

We must develop the spirit of compassion. Compassion, in a sense, is natural because we ourselves are experiencing suffering in this world and we know the pain of suffering. So if we see that someone else is going through what we are going through then naturally there is compassion. So first, one has to know what suffering is at least to some extent. If one has suffered, one becomes more compassionate because one begins to realise that this is too much. There are no exceptions in this world: no one is free from suffering.

But a vaisnava automatically becomes free from suffering by developing an ecstatic relationship with Krsna. That ecstatic relationship with Krsna removes all suffering. Devotional service destroys all suffering; we are automatically overcoming suffering. This is the nature of devotional service although it may take some time.

A Happy Wife Has a Good Husband

Hare KrishnaBy Mahatma das

If a case of illicit sex between a man and an unmarried woman were brought before Prabhupada, he never blamed the woman. He said it is the man's fault because the man is supposed to be strong and intelligent, and that a woman naturally and innocently follows a man. A man’s role is to protect and provide. Protection and exploitation are opposites. So if a woman went along with a man's sexual aggression, Prabhupada wouldn't blame her. Continue reading "A Happy Wife Has a Good Husband

Hare KrishnaBy Narahari das

Drona hung a wooden bird from a tree and asked each prince to shoot at the bird's eye. First the eldest prince, Yudhishthira, was asked to try. When he aimed at the bird, Drona asked him, "what do you see in front of you?" Yudhisthira answered, "I see a tree and a bird hearing this, Drona stopped him. He then asked other students the same question and got the same answer. When it was Arjuna's turn and Drona asked him the same question, Arjuna replied, "I see only the bird's eye. Drona was very pleased with the answer and asked him to shoot. The arrow hit the bird's eye. Drona told all his students that the best archer is the one who can only see his target and nothing else. Hare KrishnaBy Kalakantha dasa

We can turn to Krishna in any circumstance and be completely satisfied. We may understand this theoretically, but it may take a lifetime to fully live on this platform. We need to be ideal in our behavior and have integrity to represent Srila Prabhupada. Association and practice can help us in this. To say “I will only do my propensity” or for me to completely deny my propensity are both unsustainable. Do not tell the students they must give up this or that. Invite them to add chanting and prasadam to their college experience. If they do that, they will get some realization and will progress spiritually. Even when face to face with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Prahlada Maharaja did not forget his guru. Srila Prabhupada said choosing a guru is more important than choosing a spouse. Srila Prabhupada said that the siksa and diksa gurus are equal and identical manifestations of Krishna. The diksa guru is a single person who gives the mantra, gives a spiritual name, frees one from his karma, and takes responsibility of delivering the disciple, in addition to giving instruction. How to Clean / Bathe Brass, Copper & Silver Deities and other pure metal Paraphernalia. (5 min video)
After extensive research and testing we have discovered a non chemical, non abrasive, cheap but effective, fast and very easy way to clean our Brass Deities and other Paraphernalia using common household ingredients.
We were so impressed with the ease, effectiveness, cheap and safe outcome that we felt it imperatively beneficial to share this.
1. Mix a teaspoon of salt to a 2-3 table spoons of pure lemon juice. A small quantity goes a long way.
2. Add plain flour to the mixture until it becomes a smooth consistent running paste. You can also use self raising flour where the added bicarbonate of soda aids the cleaning process. If you add self raising flour you will notice a reaction fizz as you mix.
3. Gently apply the paste to brass, silver or copper.
4. Leave for a few minutes to react. Before it dries wash with plenty of warm water.
5. Make sure to wash off all the paste totally. This is a very important step.
6. Please use a new toothbrush to gently scrub away the ingrained paste on paraphernalia that has lots of grooves or intricate work.
7. Wipe / shine with a soft cloth.
8. You may apply a little oil to maintain the luster for an extended period.
9. Please feel free to share these tips and please send us your blessings.

So chanting, dancing, chanting of the holy name, and in ecstasy dancing, that is also yajña. That is the most perfectional yajña. Saṅkīrtana means when we combine together, many persons, and chant and dance. that is called saṅkīrtana-yajña. So those who are engaged in the saṅkīrtana-yajña, they are also performing yajña.
